Devil's in the Details: Aligning Visual Clues for Conditional Embedding in Person Re-Identification

Although Person Re-Identification has made impressive progress, difficult cases like occlusion, change of view-pointand similar clothing still bring great challenges. Besides overall visual features, matching and comparing detailed information is also essential for tackling these challenges. This paper proposes two key recognition patterns to better utilize the detail information of pedestrian images, that most of the existing methods are unable to satisfy. Firstly, Visual Clue Alignment requires the model to select and align decisive regions pairs from two images for pair-wise comparison, while existing methods only align regions with predefined rules like high feature similarity or same semantic labels. Secondly, the Conditional Feature Embedding requires the overall feature of a query image to be dynamically adjusted based on the gallery image it matches, while most of the existing methods ignore the reference images. By introducing novel techniques including correspondence attention module and discrepancy-based GCN, we propose an end-to-end ReID method that integrates both patterns into a unified framework, called CACE-Net((C)lue(A)lignment and (C)onditional (E)mbedding). The experiments show that CACE-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance on three public datasets.

A Parallel Down-Up Fusion Network for Salient Object Detection in Optical Remote Sensing Images

The diverse spatial resolutions, various object types, scales and orientations, and cluttered backgrounds in optical remote sensing images (RSIs) challenge the current salient object detection (SOD) approaches. It is commonly unsatisfactory to directly employ the SOD approaches designed for nature scene images (NSIs) to RSIs. In this paper, we propose a novel Parallel Down-up Fusion network (PDF-Net) for SOD in optical RSIs, which takes full advantage of the in-path low- and high-level features and cross-path multi-resolution features to distinguish diversely scaled salient objects and suppress the cluttered backgrounds. To be specific, keeping a key observation that the salient objects still are salient no matter the resolutions of images are in mind, the PDF-Net takes successive down-sampling to form five parallel paths and perceive scaled salient objects that are commonly existed in optical RSIs. Meanwhile, we adopt the dense connections to take advantage of both low- and high-level information in the same path and build up the relations of cross paths, which explicitly yield strong feature representations. At last, we fuse the multiple-resolution features in parallel paths to combine the benefits of the features with different resolutions, i.e., the high-resolution feature consisting of complete structure and clear details while the low-resolution features highlighting the scaled salient objects. Extensive experiments on the ORSSD dataset demonstrate that the proposed network is superior to the state-of-the-art approaches both qualitatively and quantitatively.

LSOTB-TIR:A Large-Scale High-Diversity Thermal Infrared Object Tracking Benchmark

In this paper, we present a Large-Scale and high-diversity general Thermal InfraRed (TIR) Object Tracking Benchmark, called LSOTBTIR, which consists of an evaluation dataset and a training dataset with a total of 1,400 TIR sequences and more than 600K frames. We annotate the bounding box of objects in every frame of all sequences and generate over 730K bounding boxes in total. To the best of our knowledge, LSOTB-TIR is the largest and most diverse TIR object tracking benchmark to date. To evaluate a tracker on different attributes, we define 4 scenario attributes and 12 challenge attributes in the evaluation dataset. By releasing LSOTB-TIR, we encourage the community to develop deep learning based TIR trackers and evaluate them fairly and comprehensively. We evaluate and analyze more than 30 trackers on LSOTB-TIR to provide a series of baselines, and the results show that deep trackers achieve promising performance. Furthermore, we re-train several representative deep trackers on LSOTB-TIR, and their results demonstrate that the proposed training dataset significantly improves the performance of deep TIR trackers. Codes and dataset are available at https://github.com/QiaoLiuHit/LSOTB-TIR.

Dual Distribution Alignment Network for Generalizable Person Re-Identification

Domain generalization (DG) serves as a promising solution to handle person Re-Identification (Re-ID), which trains the model using labels from the source domain alone, and then directly adopts the trained model to the target domain without model updating. However, existing DG approaches are usually disturbed by serious domain variations due to significant dataset variations. Subsequently, DG highly relies on designing domain-invariant features, which is however not well exploited, since most existing approaches directly mix multiple datasets to train DG based models without considering the local dataset similarities, i.e., examples that are very similar but from different domains. In this paper, we present a Dual Distribution Alignment Network (DDAN), which handles this challenge by mapping images into a domain-invariant feature space by selectively aligning distributions of multiple source domains. Such an alignment is conducted by dual-level constraints, i.e., the domain-wise adversarial feature learning and the identity-wise similarity enhancement. We evaluate our DDAN on a large-scale Domain Generalization Re-ID (DG Re-ID) benchmark. Quantitative results demonstrate that the proposed DDAN can well align the distributions of various source domains, and significantly outperforms all existing domain generalization approaches.

3dDepthNet: Point Cloud Guided Depth Completion Network for Sparse Depth and Single Color Image

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep learning network named 3dDepthNet, which produces an accurate dense depth image from a single pair of sparse LiDAR depth and color image for robotics and autonomous driving tasks. Based on the dimensional nature of depth images, our network offers a novel 3D-to-2D coarse-to-fine dual densification design that is both accurate and lightweight. Depth densification is first performed in 3D space via point cloud completion, followed by a specially designed encoder-decoder structure that utilizes the projected dense depth from 3D completion and the original RGB-D images to perform 2D image completion. Experiments on the KITTI dataset show our network achieves state-of-art accuracy while being more efficient. Ablation and generalization tests prove that each module in our network has positive influences on the final results, and furthermore, our network is resilient to even sparser depth.

Viewpoint-Aware Loss with Angular Regularization for Person Re-Identification

Although great progress in supervised person re-identification (Re-ID) has been made recently, due to the viewpoint variation of a person, Re-ID remains a massive visual challenge. Most existing viewpoint-based person Re-ID methods project images from each viewpoint into separated and unrelated sub-feature spaces. They only model the identity-level distribution inside an individual viewpoint but ignore the underlying relationship between different viewpoints. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach, called \textit{Viewpoint-Aware Loss with Angular Regularization }(\textbf{VA-reID}). Instead of one subspace for each viewpoint, our method projects the feature from different viewpoints into a unified hypersphere and effectively models the feature distribution on both the identity-level and the viewpoint-level. In addition, rather than modeling different viewpoints as hard labels used for conventional viewpoint classification, we introduce viewpoint-aware adaptive label smoothing regularization (VALSR) that assigns the adaptive soft label to feature representation. VALSR can effectively solve the ambiguity of the viewpoint cluster label assignment. Extensive experiments on the Market1501 and DukeMTMC-reID datasets demonstrated that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art supervised Re-ID methods.

Rethinking Temporal Fusion for Video-based Person Re-identification on Semantic and Time Aspect

Recently, the research interest of person re-identification (ReID) has gradually turned to video-based methods, which acquire a person representation by aggregating frame features of an entire video. However, existing video-based ReID methods do not consider the semantic difference brought by the outputs of different network stages, which potentially compromises the information richness of the person features. Furthermore, traditional methods ignore important relationship among frames, which causes information redundancy in fusion along the time axis. To address these issues, we propose a novel general temporal fusion framework to aggregate frame features on both semantic aspect and time aspect. As for the semantic aspect, a multi-stage fusion network is explored to fuse richer frame features at multiple semantic levels, which can effectively reduce the information loss caused by the traditional single-stage fusion. While, for the time axis, the existing intra-frame attention method is improved by adding a novel inter-frame attention module, which effectively reduces the information redundancy in temporal fusion by taking the relationship among frames into consideration. The experimental results show that our approach can effectively improve the video-based re-identification accuracy, achieving the state-of-the-art performance.

Supervised Online Hashing via Similarity Distribution Learning

Online hashing has attracted extensive research attention when facing streaming data. Most online hashing methods, learning binary codes based on pairwise similarities of training instances, fail to capture the semantic relationship, and suffer from a poor generalization in large-scale applications due to large variations. In this paper, we propose to model the similarity distributions between the input data and the hashing codes, upon which a novel supervised online hashing method, dubbed as Similarity Distribution based Online Hashing (SDOH), is proposed, to keep the intrinsic semantic relationship in the produced Hamming space. Specifically, we first transform the discrete similarity matrix into a probability matrix via a Gaussian-based normalization to address the extremely imbalanced distribution issue. And then, we introduce a scaling Student t-distribution to solve the challenging initialization problem, and efficiently bridge the gap between the known and unknown distributions. Lastly, we align the two distributions via minimizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KL-diverence) with stochastic gradient descent (SGD), by which an intuitive similarity constraint is imposed to update hashing model on the new streaming data with a powerful generalizing ability to the past data. Extensive experiments on three widely-used benchmarks validate the superiority of the proposed SDOH over the state-of-the-art methods in the online retrieval task.

Pyramidal Person Re-IDentification via Multi-Loss Dynamic Training

Most existing Re-IDentification (Re-ID) methods are highly dependent on precise bounding boxes that enable images to be aligned with each other. However, due to the challenging practical scenarios, current detection models often produce inaccurate bounding boxes, which inevitably degenerate the performance of existing Re-ID algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel coarse-to-fine pyramid model to relax the need of bounding boxes, which not only incorporates local and global information, but also integrates the gradual cues between them. The pyramid model is able to match at different scales and then search for the correct image of the same identity, even when the image pairs are not aligned. In addition, in order to learn discriminative identity representation, we explore a dynamic training scheme to seamlessly unify two losses and extract appropriate shared information between them. Experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art results on three datasets. Especially, our approach exceeds the current best method by 9.5% on the most challenging CUHK03 dataset.

Deep Spectral Clustering using Dual Autoencoder Network

The clustering methods have recently absorbed even-increasing attention in learning and vision. Deep clustering combines embedding and clustering together to obtain optimal embedding subspace for clustering, which can be more effective compared with conventional clustering methods. In this paper, we propose a joint learning framework for discriminative embedding and spectral clustering. We first devise a dual autoencoder network, which enforces the reconstruction constraint for the latent representations and their noisy versions, to embed the inputs into a latent space for clustering. As such the learned latent representations can be more robust to noise. Then the mutual information estimation is utilized to provide more discriminative information from the inputs. Furthermore, a deep spectral clustering method is applied to embed the latent representations into the eigenspace and subsequently clusters them, which can fully exploit the relationship between inputs to achieve optimal clustering results. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show that our method can significantly outperform state-of-the-art clustering approaches.

Trifo-VIO: Robust and Efficient Stereo Visual Inertial Odometry using Points and Lines

In this paper, we present the Trifo Visual Inertial Odometry (Trifo-VIO), a tightly-coupled filtering-based stereo VIO system using both points and lines. Line features help improve system robustness in challenging scenarios when point features cannot be reliably detected or tracked, e.g. low-texture environment or lighting change. In addition, we propose a novel lightweight filtering-based loop closing technique to reduce accumulated drift without global bundle adjustment or pose graph optimization. We formulate loop closure as EKF updates to optimally relocate the current sliding window maintained by the filter to past keyframes. We also present the Trifo Ironsides dataset, a new visual-inertial dataset, featuring high-quality synchronized stereo camera and IMU data from the Ironsides sensor [3] with various motion types and textures and millimeter-accuracy groundtruth. To validate the performance of the proposed system, we conduct extensive comparison with state-of-the-art approaches (OKVIS, VINS-MONO and S-MSCKF) using both the public EuRoC dataset and the Trifo Ironsides dataset.

Dual-reference Face Retrieval

Face retrieval has received much attention over the past few decades, and many efforts have been made in retrieving face images against pose, illumination, and expression variations. However, the conventional works fail to meet the requirements of a potential and novel task --- retrieving a person's face image at a specific age, especially when the specific 'age' is not given as a numeral, i.e. 'retrieving someone's image at the similar age period shown by another person's image'. To tackle this problem, we propose a dual reference face retrieval framework in this paper, where the system takes two inputs: an identity reference image which indicates the target identity and an age reference image which reflects the target age. In our framework, the raw images are first projected on a joint manifold, which preserves both the age and identity locality. Then two similarity metrics of age and identity are exploited and optimized by utilizing our proposed quartet-based model. The experiments show promising results, outperforming hierarchical methods.

PIRVS: An Advanced Visual-Inertial SLAM System with Flexible Sensor Fusion and Hardware Co-Design

In this paper, we present the PerceptIn Robotics Vision System (PIRVS) system, a visual-inertial computing hardware with embedded simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm. The PIRVS hardware is equipped with a multi-core processor, a global-shutter stereo camera, and an IMU with precise hardware synchronization. The PIRVS software features a novel and flexible sensor fusion approach to not only tightly integrate visual measurements with inertial measurements and also to loosely couple with additional sensor modalities. It runs in real-time on both PC and the PIRVS hardware. We perform a thorough evaluation of the proposed system using multiple public visual-inertial datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our system reaches comparable accuracy of state-of-the-art visual-inertial algorithms on PC, while being more efficient on the PIRVS hardware.
