On isolated singular solutions of semilinear Helmholtz equation

Our purpose of this paper is to study isolated singular solutions of semilinear Helmholtz equation $$ -Δu-u=Q|u|^{p-1}u \quad{\rm in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^N\setminus\{0\},\ \qquad\lim_{|x|\to0}u(x)=+\infty, $$ where $N\geq 2$, $p>1$ and the potential $Q: \mathbb{R}^N\to (0,+\infty)$ is a Hölder continuous function satisfying extra decaying conditions at infinity. We give the classification of the isolated singularity in the Serrin's subcritical case and then isolated singular solutions is derived with the form $u_k=kΦ+v_k$ via the Schauder fixed point theorem for the integral equation $$v_k=Φ\ast\big(Q|kw_σ+v_k|^{p-1}(kw_σ+v_k)\big)\quad{\rm in}\ \, \mathbb{R}^N,$$ where $Φ$ is the real valued fundamental solution $-Δ-1$ and $w_σ$ is a also a real valued solution $(-Δ-1)w_σ=δ_0$ with the asymptotic behavior at infinity controlled by $|x|^{-σ}$ for some $σ\leq \frac{N-1}{2}$.

Perovskite-type YRh$_{3}$B with multiple types of nodal point and nodal line states

Experimentally synthesized perovskite-type YRh$_{3}$B with a $Pm\bar{3}m$ type structure was proposed as a novel topological material (TM) via first-principles calculations and the low-energy $k\cdot p$ effective Hamiltonian, which has a quadratic contact triple point (QCTP) at point $Γ$ and six pairs of open nodal lines (NLs) of the hybrid type. Clear surface states observed in the surface spectrum confirmed the topological states. When spin-orbit coupling was considered, the QCTP at $Γ$ transferred to the quadratic-type Dirac nodal point (NP). Under 1$\%$ tetragonal strained lattice constants, YRh$_{3}$B hosted richer topological states, including a quadratic-type two-fold degenerate NP, six pairs of open NLs of the hybrid type, and two closed NLs of type I and hybrid type. Moreover, it was proved that the NLs of YRh$_{3}$B at its strained lattice constants contain all types of band-crossing points (BCPs) (i.e., type I, type II, and critical type). Such rich types of NP and NL states in one compound make it potentially applicable for multifunctional electronic devices as well as an appropriate platform to study entanglement among topological states.

Coexistence of hourglass Weyl and Dirac nodal line phonons in orthorhombic-type KCuS

In parallel to electronic systems, the concept of topology has been extended to phonons, which has led to the birth of topological phonons. Very recently, nodal point phonons, nodal line phonons, and nodal surface phonons have been proposed, and a handful of candidate materials have been predicted in solid-state materials. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose that hourglass Weyl nodal line (HWNL) phonons and Dirac nodal line (DNL) phonons coexist in the phonon dispersion of a single material, KCuS, with a $Pnma$-type structure. The HWNLs and DNLs are relatively flat in frequency and well separated from other phonon bands. The corresponding topological phonon surface states appear only in the [100] and [001] surfaces, unlike those of typical phononic nodal-line materials. The reason for this phenomenon is explained based on Zak phase calculations. Our work, for the first time, proves that phononic nodal lines with different types of degeneracies can be achieved in one single material. Thus, KCuS can be viewed as a good platform to investigate the entanglement between HWNL phonons and DNL phonons.

Unsupervised Classification for Polarimetric SAR Data Using Variational Bayesian Wishart Mixture Model with Inverse Gamma-Gamma Prior

Although various clustering methods have been successfully applied to polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image clustering tasks, most of the available approaches fail to realize automatic determination of cluster number, nor have they derived an exact distribution for the number of looks. To overcome these limitations and achieve robust unsupervised classification of PolSAR images, this paper proposes the variational Bayesian Wishart mixture model (VBWMM), where variational Bayesian expectation maximization (VBEM) technique is applied to estimate the variational posterior distribution of model parameters iteratively. Besides, covariance matrix similarity and geometric similarity are combined to incorporate spatial information of PolSAR images. Furthermore, we derive a new distribution named inverse gamma-gamma (IGG) prior that originates from the log-likelihood function of proposed model to enable efficient handling of number of looks. As a result, we obtain a closed-form variational lower bound, which can be used to evaluate the convergence of proposed model. We validate the superiority of proposed method in clustering performance on four real-measured datasets and demonstrate significant improvements towards conventional methods. As a by-product, the experiments show that our proposed IGG prior is effective in estimating the number of looks.

Symmetry-enforced ideal lantern-like phonons in ternary nitride Li$_6$WN$_4$

Condensed matter systems contain both fermionic and bosonic quasiparticles. Owing to the constraint imposed by the Fermi level, ideal material candidate for the emergent particles with higher-dimensional degeneracy manifold (i.e., nodal lines and nodal surfaces) has not been found in electronic systems. This paper demonstrates that according to the first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, realistic ternary nitride Li$_6$WN$_4$ features ideal (nearly flat) nodal-surface and nodal-line structures in its phonon spectra. These nodal degeneracies are shaped like lanterns, and their existence is guaranteed by nonsymmorphic symmetry. The corresponding topological phonon surface state covers exactly half the surface Brillouin zone (BZ) and can thereby be distinguished from those of conventional nodal-line and nodal-surface semimetals. The results of our study demonstrate the existence of ideal lantern-like phonons in realistic materials, which enriches the classification of topological quantum phases and provides a good basis for investigating the interaction between nodal-line and nodal-surface phonons in a single material.

Bounds of Dirichlet eigenvalues for Hardy-Leray operator

The purpose of this paper is to study the eigenvalues $\{λ_{μ,i} \}_i$ for the Dirichlet Hardy-Leray operator, i.e. $$ -Δu+μ|x|^{-2}u=λu\ \ {\rm in}\ \, Ω,\quad\quad u=0\ \ {\rm on}\ \ \partialΩ,$$ where $-Δ+\fracμ{|x|^2}$ is the Hardy-Leray operator with $μ\geq -\frac{(N-2)^2}{4}$ and $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain with $0\inΩ$. We provide lower bounds of $\{λ_{μ,i} \}_i$ together with the Li-Yau's one for $μ>-\frac{(N-2)^2}{4}$ and Karachalio's one for $μ\in [-\frac{(N-2)^2}{4},0)$. Secondly, we obtain Cheng-Yang's type upper bounds for $λ_{μ,k}$. Finally, we get the Weyl's limit of eigenvalues which is independent of the potential's parameter $μ$. This interesting phenomena indicates that the inverse-square potential does not play an essential role for the asymptotic behavior of the spectral of the problem considered.

Using Eye-tracking Data to Predict Situation Awareness in Real Time during Takeover Transitions in Conditionally Automated Driving

Situation awareness (SA) is critical to improving takeover performance during the transition period from automated driving to manual driving. Although many studies measured SA during or after the driving task, few studies have attempted to predict SA in real time in automated driving. In this work, we propose to predict SA during the takeover transition period in conditionally automated driving using eye-tracking and self-reported data. First, a tree ensemble machine learning model, named LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine), was used to predict SA. Second, in order to understand what factors influenced SA and how, SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) values of individual predictor variables in the LightGBM model were calculated. These SHAP values explained the prediction model by identifying the most important factors and their effects on SA, which further improved the model performance of LightGBM through feature selection. We standardized SA between 0 and 1 by aggregating three performance measures (i.e., placement, distance, and speed estimation of vehicles with regard to the ego-vehicle) of SA in recreating simulated driving scenarios, after 33 participants viewed 32 videos with six lengths between 1 and 20 s. Using only eye-tracking data, our proposed model outperformed other selected machine learning models, having a root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of 0.121, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.096, and a 0.719 correlation coefficient between the predicted SA and the ground truth. The code is available at https://github.com/refengchou/Situation-awareness-prediction. Our proposed model provided important implications on how to monitor and predict SA in real time in automated driving using eye-tracking data.

Searching for Alignment in Face Recognition

A standard pipeline of current face recognition frameworks consists of four individual steps: locating a face with a rough bounding box and several fiducial landmarks, aligning the face image using a pre-defined template, extracting representations and comparing. Among them, face detection, landmark detection and representation learning have long been studied and a lot of works have been proposed. As an essential step with a significant impact on recognition performance, the alignment step has attracted little attention. In this paper, we first explore and highlight the effects of different alignment templates on face recognition. Then, for the first time, we try to search for the optimal template automatically. We construct a well-defined searching space by decomposing the template searching into the crop size and vertical shift, and propose an efficient method Face Alignment Policy Search (FAPS). Besides, a well-designed benchmark is proposed to evaluate the searched policy. Experiments on our proposed benchmark validate the effectiveness of our method to improve face recognition performance.

Predicting Driver Fatigue in Automated Driving with Explainability

Research indicates that monotonous automated driving increases the incidence of fatigued driving. Although many prediction models based on advanced machine learning techniques were proposed to monitor driver fatigue, especially in manual driving, little is known about how these black-box machine learning models work. In this paper, we proposed a combination of eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) to predict driver fatigue with explanations due to their efficiency and accuracy. First, in order to obtain the ground truth of driver fatigue, PERCLOS (percentage of eyelid closure over the pupil over time) between 0 and 100 was used as the response variable. Second, we built a driver fatigue regression model using both physiological and behavioral measures with XGBoost and it outperformed other selected machine learning models with 3.847 root-mean-squared error (RMSE), 1.768 mean absolute error (MAE) and 0.996 adjusted $R^2$. Third, we employed SHAP to identify the most important predictor variables and uncovered the black-box XGBoost model by showing the main effects of most important predictor variables globally and explaining individual predictions locally. Such an explainable driver fatigue prediction model offered insights into how to intervene in automated driving when necessary, such as during the takeover transition period from automated driving to manual driving.

Combat COVID-19 Infodemic Using Explainable Natural Language Processing Models

Misinformation of COVID-19 is prevalent on social media as the pandemic unfolds, and the associated risks are extremely high. Thus, it is critical to detect and combat such misinformation. Recently, deep learning models using natural language processing techniques, such as BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), have achieved great successes in detecting misinformation. In this paper, we proposed an explainable natural language processing model based on DistilBERT and SHAP (Shapley Additive exPlanations) to combat misinformation about COVID-19 due to their efficiency and effectiveness. First, we collected a dataset of 984 claims about COVID-19 with fact checking. By augmenting the data using back-translation, we doubled the sample size of the dataset and the DistilBERT model was able to obtain good performance (accuracy: 0.972; areas under the curve: 0.993) in detecting misinformation about COVID-19. Our model was also tested on a larger dataset for AAAI2021 - COVID-19 Fake News Detection Shared Task and obtained good performance (accuracy: 0.938; areas under the curve: 0.985). The performance on both datasets was better than traditional machine learning models. Second, in order to boost public trust in model prediction, we employed SHAP to improve model explainability, which was further evaluated using a between-subjects experiment with three conditions, i.e., text (T), text+SHAP explanation (TSE), and text+SHAP explanation+source and evidence (TSESE). The participants were significantly more likely to trust and share information related to COVID-19 in the TSE and TSESE conditions than in the T condition. Our results provided good implications in detecting misinformation about COVID-19 and improving public trust.

Coexistience of phononic six-fold, four-fold and three-fold excitations in ternary antimonide Zr3Ni3Sb4

Three-, four-, and six-fold excitations have significantly extended the subjects of condensed matter physics. There is an urgent need for a realistic material that can have coexisting 3-, 4-, and 6-fold excitations. However, these materials are uncommon because these excitations in electronic systems are usually broken by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and normally far from the Fermi level. Unlike the case in electronic systems, the phonon systems with negligible SOC effect, not constrained by the Pauli exclusion principle, provide a feasible platform to realize these excitations in a wide frequency range. Hence, in this work, we demonstrate by first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis that perfect 3-, 4-, 6-fold excitations appear in the phonon dispersion rather than the band structures of Zr3Ni3Sb4, which is a well-known indirect-gap semiconductor with an Y3Au3Sb4-type structure. This material features 3-fold quadratic contact triple-point phonon, 4-fold Dirac point phonon, and 6-fold point phonon. Moreover, these nodal-point phonons are very robust to uniform strain. Two obvious phonon surface arcs of the [001] plane are extended in the whole Brillouin zone, which will facilitate their detection in future experimental studies. The current work provides an ideal model to investigate the rich excitations in a single material.

Efficient Inference of Flexible Interaction in Spiking-neuron Networks

Hawkes process provides an effective statistical framework for analyzing the time-dependent interaction of neuronal spiking activities. Although utilized in many real applications, the classic Hawkes process is incapable of modelling inhibitory interactions among neurons. Instead, the nonlinear Hawkes process allows for a more flexible influence pattern with excitatory or inhibitory interactions. In this paper, three sets of auxiliary latent variables (Pólya-Gamma variables, latent marked Poisson processes and sparsity variables) are augmented to make functional connection weights in a Gaussian form, which allows for a simple iterative algorithm with analytical updates. As a result, an efficient expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is derived to obtain the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate. We demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency performance of our algorithm on synthetic and real data. For real neural recordings, we show our algorithm can estimate the temporal dynamics of interaction and reveal the interpretable functional connectivity underlying neural spike trains.

Intersecting topological nodal ring and nodal wall states in superhard superconductor FeB4

Novel materials with both topological nontrivial states and superconductivity have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Single-crystal FeB4 was recently synthesized and demonstrated to exhibit superconductivity at temperatures lower than 2.9 K, and its nanoindentation hardness was measured to be 65 GPa. In this study, based on first-principles calculation and the low-energy kp effective Hamiltonian, we found that this Pnnm-type superhard FeB4 superconductor hosts topological behaviors with intersecting nodal rings (INRs) in the k_x=0 and k_z=0 planes and nodal wall states in the k_y= π and k_z= π planes. The observed surface drum-head-like (D-H-L) states on the [100] and [001] surfaces confirmed the presence of INR states in this system. According to our investigation results, FeB4, with its superconductivity, superior mechanical behaviors, one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional topological elements, and D-H-L surface states, is an existing single-phase target material that can be used to realize the topological superconducting state in the near future.

Modeling Dispositional and Initial learned Trust in Automated Vehicles with Predictability and Explainability

Technological advances in the automotive industry are bringing automated driving closer to road use. However, one of the most important factors affecting public acceptance of automated vehicles (AVs) is the public's trust in AVs. Many factors can influence people's trust, including perception of risks and benefits, feelings, and knowledge of AVs. This study aims to use these factors to predict people's dispositional and initial learned trust in AVs using a survey study conducted with 1175 participants. For each participant, 23 features were extracted from the survey questions to capture his or her knowledge, perception, experience, behavioral assessment, and feelings about AVs. These features were then used as input to train an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model to predict trust in AVs. With the help of SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), we were able to interpret the trust predictions of XGBoost to further improve the explainability of the XGBoost model. Compared to traditional regression models and black-box machine learning models, our findings show that this approach was powerful in providing a high level of explainability and predictability of trust in AVs, simultaneously.

Qualitative properties of Hénon type equations with exponential nonlinearity

We are interested in the qualitative properties of solutions of the Hénon type equations with exponential nonlinearity. First, we classify the stable at infinity solutions of $Δu +|x|^αe^u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which gives a complete answer to the problem considered in [Wang-Ye]. Secondly, existence and precise asymptotic behaviors of entire radial solutions to $Δ^2 u=|x|^α e^u$ are obtained. Then we classify the stable and stable at infinity radial solutions to $Δ^2 u=|x|^α e^u$ in any dimension.

Matching Guided Distillation

Feature distillation is an effective way to improve the performance for a smaller student model, which has fewer parameters and lower computation cost compared to the larger teacher model. Unfortunately, there is a common obstacle - the gap in semantic feature structure between the intermediate features of teacher and student. The classic scheme prefers to transform intermediate features by adding the adaptation module, such as naive convolutional, attention-based or more complicated one. However, this introduces two problems: a) The adaptation module brings more parameters into training. b) The adaptation module with random initialization or special transformation isn't friendly for distilling a pre-trained student. In this paper, we present Matching Guided Distillation (MGD) as an efficient and parameter-free manner to solve these problems. The key idea of MGD is to pose matching the teacher channels with students' as an assignment problem. We compare three solutions of the assignment problem to reduce channels from teacher features with partial distillation loss. The overall training takes a coordinate-descent approach between two optimization objects - assignments update and parameters update. Since MGD only contains normalization or pooling operations with negligible computation cost, it is flexible to plug into network with other distillation methods.

Emotional Design

Emotional design has been well recognized in the domain of human factors and ergonomics. In this chapter, we reviewed related models and methods of emotional design. We are motivated to encourage emotional designers to take multiple perspectives when examining these models and methods. Then we proposed a systematic process for emotional design, including affective-cognitive needs elicitation, affective-cognitive needs analysis, and affective-cognitive needs fulfillment to support emotional design. Within each step, we provided an updated review of the representative methods to support and offer further guidance on emotional design. We hope researchers and industrial practitioners can take a systematic approach to consider each step in the framework with care. Finally, the speculations on the challenges and future directions can potentially help researchers across different fields to further advance emotional design.

Psychophysiological responses to takeover requests in conditionally automated driving

In SAE Level 3 automated driving, taking over control from automation raises significant safety concerns because drivers out of the vehicle control loop have difficulty negotiating takeover transitions. Existing studies on takeover transitions have focused on drivers' behavioral responses to takeover requests (TORs). As a complement, this exploratory study aimed to examine drivers' psychophysiological responses to TORs as a result of varying non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs), traffic density and TOR lead time. A total number of 102 drivers were recruited and each of them experienced 8 takeover events in a high fidelity fixed-base driving simulator. Drivers' gaze behaviors, heart rate (HR) activities, galvanic skin responses (GSRs), and facial expressions were recorded and analyzed during two stages. First, during the automated driving stage, we found that drivers had lower heart rate variability, narrower horizontal gaze dispersion, and shorter eyes-on-road time when they had a high level of cognitive load relative to a low level of cognitive load. Second, during the takeover transition stage, 4s lead time led to inhibited blink numbers and larger maximum and mean GSR phasic activation compared to 7s lead time, whilst heavy traffic density resulted in increased HR acceleration patterns than light traffic density. Our results showed that psychophysiological measures can indicate specific internal states of drivers, including their workload, emotions, attention, and situation awareness in a continuous, non-invasive and real-time manner. The findings provide additional support for the value of using psychophysiological measures in automated driving and for future applications in driver monitoring systems and adaptive alert systems.
