Remarks on the study of the X(3872) from Effective Field Theory with Pion-Exchange Interaction

In a recent paper Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846), the charmonium state X(3872) is studied in the framework of an effective field theory. In that work it is claimed that (i) the one-pion exchange (OPE) alone provides sufficient binding to produce the X as a shallow bound state at the $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$ threshold, (ii) short-range dynamics (described by a contact interaction) provides only moderate corrections to the OPE, and (iii) the X-pole disappears as the pion mass is increased slightly and therefore the X should not be seen on the lattice, away from the pion physical mass point, if it were a molecular state. In this paper we demonstrate that the results of Phys.Rev.Lett. 111, 042002 (2013) (arXiv:1304.0846) suffer from technical as well as conceptual problems and therefore do not support the conclusions drawn by the authors.

Production of the spin partner of the X(3872) in e^+e^- collisions

We study the production of the spin partner of the X(3872), which is a D^{*}\bar D^{*} bound state with quantum numbers J^{PC}=2^{++} and named X_2(4012) here, with the associated emission of a photon in electron--positron collisions. The results show that the ideal energy region to observe the X_2(4012) in e^+e^- annihilations is from 4.4~GeV to 4.5~GeV, due to the presence of the S-wave \bar D^{*} D_1(2420) and \bar D^{*} D_2(2460) thresholds, respectively. We also point out that it will be difficult to observe the γX(4012) at the e^+e^- center-of-mass energy around 4.26~GeV.

Enhanced breaking of heavy quark spin symmetry

Heavy quark spin symmetry is useful to make predictions on ratios of decay or production rates of systems involving heavy quarks. The breaking of spin symmetry is generally of the order of $O({Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_Q})$, with $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ the scale of QCD and $m_Q$ the heavy quark mass. In this paper, we will show that a small $S$- and $D$-wave mixing in the wave function of the heavy quarkonium could induce a large breaking in the ratios of partial decay widths. As an example, we consider the decays of the $Υ(10860)$ into the $χ_{bJ}ω\, (J=0,1,2)$, which were recently measured by the Belle Collaboration. These decays exhibit a huge breaking of the spin symmetry relation were the $Υ(10860)$ a pure $5S$ bottomonium state. We propose that this could be a consequence of a mixing of the $S$-wave and $D$-wave components in the $Υ(10860)$. Prediction on the ratio $Γ(Υ(10860)\toχ_{b0}ω)/Γ(Υ(10860)\toχ_{b2}ω)$ is presented assuming that the decay of the $D$-wave component is dominated by the coupled-channel effects.

Production of the bottom analogues and the spin partner of the X(3872) at hadron colliders

Using the Monte Carlo event generator tools Pythia and Herwig, we simulate the production of bottom/charm meson and antimeson pairs at hadron colliders in proton-proton/antiproton collisions. With these results, we derive an order-of-magnitude estimate for the production rates of the bottom analogues and the spin partner of the $X(3872)$ as hadronic molecules at the LHC and Tevatron experiments. We find that the cross sections for these processes are at the nb level, so that the current and future data sets from the Tevatron and LHC experiments offer a significant discovery potential. We further point out that the $X_b/X_{b2}$ should be reconstructed in the $γΥ(nS) (n=1,2,3)$, $Υ(1S)π^+π^-π^0$, or $χ_{bJ}π^+π^-$ instead of the $Υ(nS)π^+π^-$ final states.

Direct X(3872) production in e+e- collisions

Direct production of the charmonium-like state $X(3872)$ in $e^+e^-$ collisions is considered in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. An order-of-magnitude estimate for the width $Γ(X\to e^+e^-)$ is found to be $\gtrsim$0.03 eV. The same approach applied to the $χ_{c1}$ charmonium decay predicts the corresponding width of the order 0.1 eV in agreement with earlier estimates. Experimental perspectives for the direct production of the $1^{++}$ charmonia in $e^+e^-$ collisions are briefly discussed.

Finite-volume corrections to the CP-odd nucleon matrix elements of the electromagnetic current from the QCD vacuum angle

Nucleon electric dipole moments originating from strong CP-violation are being calculated by several groups using lattice QCD. We revisit the finite volume corrections to the CP-odd nucleon matrix elements of the electromagnetic current, which can be related to the electric dipole moments in the continuum, in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order taking into account the breaking of Lorentz symmetry. A chiral extrapolation of the recent lattice results of both the neutron and proton electric dipole moments is performed, which results in $d_n=(-2.7\pm1.2)\times10^{-16}eθ_0$cm and $d_p=(2.1\pm1.2)\times10^{-16}eθ_0$cm.

$Y(4260)$ as the first $S$-wave open charm vector molecular state?

Since its first observation in 2005, the vector charmonium $Y(4260)$ has turned out to be one of the prime candidates for an exotic state in the charmonium spectrum. It was recently proposed that the $Y(4260)$ should have a prominent $D_1\bar{D}+c.c.$ molecular component that is strongly correlated with the production of the charged $Z_c(3900)$. In this paper we demonstrate that the nontrivial cross section line shapes of $e^+e^-\to J/ψππ$ and $h_cππ$ can be naturally explained by the molecular scenario. As a consequence we find a significantly smaller mass for the $Y(4260)$ than previous studied. In the $e^+e^-\to \bar D D^*π+c.c.$ process, with the inclusion of an additional $S$-wave $\bar D^*π$ contribution constrained from data on the $D\bar D^*$ invariant mass distribution, we obtain a good agreement with the data of the angular distributions. We also predict an unusual line shape of $Y(4260)$ in this channel that may serve as a smoking gun for a predominantly molecular nature of $Y(4260)$. Improved measurements of these observables are therefore crucial for a better understanding of the structure of this famous resonance.

Strong and radiative decays of the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$

Since their discovery in 2003, the open charm states $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ provide a challenge to the conventional quark model. In recent years, theoretical evidence has been accumulated for both states in favor of a predominantly $DK$ and $D^*K$ molecular nature, respectively. However, a direct experimental proof of this hypothesis still needs to be found. Since radiative decays are generally believed to be sensitive to the inner structure of the decaying particles, we study in this work the radiative and strong decays of both the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$, as well as of their counterparts in the bottom sector. While the strong decays are indeed strongly enhanced for molecular states, the radiative decays are of similar order of magnitude in different pictures. Thus, the experimental observable that allows one to conclusively quantify the molecular components of the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ is the hadronic width, and not the radiative one, in contradistinction to common belief. We also find that radiative decays of the sibling states in the bottom sector are significantly more frequent than the hadronic ones. Based on this, we identify their most promising discovery channels.

Production of charm-strange hadronic molecules at the LHC

We explore the inclusive hadroproduction of the D_{s0}^*(2317), D_{s1}(2460) and D_{sJ}(2860) states at the Large Hadron Collider under the assumption that these hadrons are S-wave meson-meson molecules. In addition, the D_{s2}(2910), a predicted bound state of the D_2(2460)K system, is also discussed. We first derive a factorisation formula for the production rates based on effective field theory. Then we make use of two MC event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of pairs of charmed mesons and kaons. Using effective field theory to handle the final state interaction among the meson pairs, we give an estimate of the inclusive production rates for these particles at the order-of-magnitude accuracy. Our results show that the cross sections for the pp --> D_{s0}^*(2317) and pp --> D_{s1}(2460) at the LHC are at O(1 μb) level, while the ones for the pp --> D_{sJ}(2860) and the pp --> D_{s2}(2910) are smaller by about one order of magnitude. Such estimates suggest that these four exotic states could be copiously produced at the LHC. A study of these states at the LHC will thus provide valuable information on hadron spectroscopy as well as hadron interactions.

Detecting the long-distance structure of the X(3872)

We study the X(3872)-->D^0 \bar D^0 π^0 decay within a D \bar D^* molecular picture for the X(3872) state. This decay mode is more sensitive to the long-distance structure of the X(3872) resonance than its J/ψππand J/\psi3πdecays, which are mainly controlled by the details of the X(3872) wave function at short distances. We show that the D^0 \bar D^0 final state interaction can be important, and that a precise measurement of this partial decay width can provide valuable information on the interaction strength between the D^{(*)} \bar D^{(*)} charm mesons.

Y(4260): hadronic molecule versus hadro-charmonium interpretation

In this paper we confront both the hadronic molecule and the hadro-charmonium interpretations of the $\y$ with the experimental data currently available. We conclude that the data support the $\y$ being dominantly a $D_1\bar D+c.c.$ hadronic molecule while they challenge the hadro-charmonium interpretation. However, additional data is necessary to allow for stronger conclusions.

Heavy Quark Symmetries: Molecular Partners of the X(3872) and $Z_{b}(10610)/Z_{b}'(10650)$

In this work, we have used an Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework based on Heavy Quark Spin (HQSS), Heavy Flavour (HFS) and Heavy Antiquark-Diquark symmetries (HADS). Using a standard lagrangian for the heavy meson-heavy antimeson system, we fit the counter-terms of the model to predict some promising experimental data that can be interpreted as heavy meson-heavy antimeson molecules, that is, the X(3872) and the $Z_{b}(10610)/Z'_{b}(10650)$. Next, and, taking advantage of HADS, we use the same lagrangian to explore the consequences for heavy meson-doubly heavy baryon molecules, which can also be interpreted as triply heavy pentaquarks.

Consequences of Heavy Quark Symmetries for Hadronic Molecules

Among the newly observed structures in the heavy quarkonium mass region, some are proposed to be hadronic molecules. We investigate the consequences of heavy quark flavor symmetry on these heavy meson hadronic molecules. The symmetry allows us to predict new hadronic molecules on one hand, and test the hadronic molecular assumption of the observed structures on the other hand. We explore the consequences of the flavor symmetry assuming the X(3872) and $Z_b(10610)$ as a isoscalar $D\bar D^*$ and isovector $B\bar B^*$ hadronic molecule, respectively. A series of hadronic molecules composed of heavy mesons are predicted. In particular, there is an isoscalar $1^{++}$ $B\bar B^*$ bound state with a mass of 10580 MeV which may be searched for in the $Υ(1S,2S)π^+π^-π^0$ mass distribution; the isovector charmonium partners of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$ are also predicted, one of which probably corresponds to the very recently observed $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4025)$ resonances by the BESIII Collaboration.

Tetraquarks, hadronic molecules, meson-meson scattering and disconnected contributions in lattice QCD

There are generally two types of Wick contractions in lattice QCD calculations of a correlation function --- connected and disconnected ones. The disconnected contribution is difficult to calculate and noisy, thus it is often neglected. In the context of studying tetraquarks, hadronic molecules and meson-meson scattering, we show that whenever there are both connected and singly disconnected contractions, the singly disconnected part gives the leading order contribution, and thus should never be neglected. As an explicit example, we show that information about the scalar mesons sigma, f0(980), a0(980) and kappa will be lost when neglecting the disconnected contributions.

Production of charged heavy quarkonium-like states at the LHC and the Tevatron

We study prompt hadroproduction of the charged bottomonium-like states $Z_b^\pm (10610)$ and $Z_b^\pm (10650)$, and the charged charmonium-like states $Z_c^\pm (3900)$ and $Z_c^\pm (4020)$, at the Tevatron and the LHC, provided that these states are $S$-wave hadronic molecules. Using two Monte Carlo event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of heavy meson pairs, we derive an order-of-magnitude estimate of the production rates for these four particles. Our estimates yield a cross section at the nb level for the $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$. The results for the $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$ are larger by a factor of 20-30. These cross sections are large enough to be observed, and measurements at hadron colliders in the future will supplement the study using electron-positron collisions, and therefore allow to explore the mysterious nature of these exotic states.

Production of the X(3872) in charmonia radiative decays

We discuss the possibilities of producing the X(3872), which is assumed to be a D \bar D^* bound state, in radiative decays of charmonia. We argue that the ideal energy regions to observe the X(3872) associated with a photon in e^+e^- annihilations are around the Y(4260) mass and around 4.45 GeV, due to the presence of the S-wave D \bar D_1(2420) and D^* \bar D_1(2420) threshold, respectively. Especially, if the Y(4260) is dominantly a D \bar D_1 molecule and the X(3872) a D \bar D^* molecule, the radiative transition strength will be quite large.

Heavy Antiquark--Diquark Symmetry and Heavy Hadron Molecules: Are There Triply Heavy Pentaquarks?

We explore the consequences of heavy flavour, heavy quark spin and heavy antiquark-diquark symmetries for hadronic molecules within an effective field theory framework.. Owing to heavy antiquark-diquark symmetry, the doubly heavy baryons have approximately the same light-quark structure as the heavy antimesons. As a consequence, the existence of a heavy meson-antimeson molecule implies the possibility of a partner composed of a heavy meson and a doubly-heavy baryon. In this regard, the D\bar D* molecular nature of the X(3872) will hint at the existence of several baryonic partners with isospin I=0 and J^P = 5/2^- or 3/2^-. Moreover, if the Zb(10650) turns out to be a B*\bar B* bound state, we can be confident of the existence of \Xibb* \bar B* hadronic molecules with quantum numbers I(J^P) = 1(1/2^-) and I(J^P) = 1(3/2^-). These states are of special interest since they can be considered to be triply-heavy pentaquarks.

Confirming the molecular nature of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$

The decays of the $Z_b(10610)$ and the $Z_b(10650)$ to $Υ(nS)π$, $h_b(mP)π$ and $χ_{bJ}(mP)γ$ ($n=1,2,3$, $m=1,2$ and $J=0,1,2$) are investigated within a nonrelativistic effective field theory. It is argued that, while the decays to $Υ(nS) π$ suffer from potentially large higher order corrections, the $P$-wave transitions of the $Z_b$ states offer the best possibility to confirm the nature of the $Z_b$ states as molecular states and to further study their properties. We give nontrivial and parameter-free predictions for the ratios of various partial widths for final states with $h_b(mP)π$ and $χ_{bJ}(mP)γ$. In addition, the branching fractions for the neutral $Z_b$-states to $χ_{bJ}γ$ are predicted to be of order $10^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$. This provides a fine test of the molecular nature in future high-luminosity experiments.
