Aubin type almost sharp Moser-Trudinger inequality revisited

We give a new proof of the almost sharp Moser-Trudinger inequality on compact Riemannian manifolds based on the sharp Moser inequality on Euclidean spaces. In particular we can lower the smoothness requirement of the metric and apply the same approach to higher order Sobolev spaces and manifolds with boundary under several boundary conditions.

Improved Sobolev inequality under constraints

We give a new proof of Aubin's improvement of the Sobolev inequality on $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ under the vanishing of first order moments of the area element and generalize it to higher order moments case. By careful study of an extremal problem on $\mathbb{S}^{n}$, we determine the constant explicitly in the second order moments case.

A remark on the concentration compactness principle in critical dimension

We prove some refinements of concentration compactness principle for Sobolev space $W^{1,n}$ on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$. As an application, we extend Aubin's theorem for functions on $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with zero first order moments of the area element to higher order moments case. Our arguments are very flexible and can be easily modified for functions satisfying various boundary conditions or belonging to higher order Sobolev spaces.

Improved Moser-Trudinger-Onofri inequality under constraints

A classical result of Aubin states that the constant in Moser-Trudinger-Onofri inequality on $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ can be imporved for furnctions with zero first order moments of the area element. We generalize it to higher order moments case. These new inequalities bear similarity to a sequence of Lebedev-Milin type inequalities on $\mathbb{S}^{1}$ coming from the work of Grenander-Szego on Toeplitz determinants (as pointed out by Widom). We also discuss the related sharp inequality by a perturbation method.

Liouville type theorems on manifolds with nonnegative curvature and strictly convex boundary

We prove some Liouville type theorems on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and strictly convex boundary. This gives a nonlinear generalization in low dimension of the recent sharp lower bound of the first Steklov eigenvalue by Xia-Xiong and verifies partially a conjecture by the third author. As a consequence, we derive several sharp Sobolev trace inequalities on these manifolds.

Remarks on a mean field equation on $\mathbb{S}^{2}$

In this note, we study symmetry of solutions of the elliptic equation \begin{equation*} -Δ_{\mathbb{S}^{2}}u+3=e^{2u}\ \ \hbox{on}\ \ \mathbb{S}^{2}, \end{equation*} that arises in the study of rigidity problem of Hawking mass in general relativity. We provide various conditions under which this equation has only constant solutions, and consequently imply the rigidity of Hawking mass for stable constant mean curvature (CMC) sphere.

The sphere covering inequality and its dual

We present a new proof of the sphere covering inequality in the spirit of comparison geometry, and as a byproduct we find another sphere covering inequality which can be viewed as the dual of the original one. We also prove sphere covering inequalities on surfaces satisfying general isoperimetric inequalities, and discuss their applications to elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearities in dimension two. The approach in this paper extends, improves, and unifies several inequalities about solutions of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearities.

A perturbation approach for Paneitz energy on standard three sphere

We present another proof of the sharp inequality for Paneitz operator on the standard three sphere, in the spirit of subcritical approximation for the classical Yamabe problem. To solve the perturbed problem, we use a symmetrization process which only works for extremal functions. This gives a new example of symmetrization for higher order variational problems.

Q curvature on a class of manifolds with dimension at least 5

For a smooth compact Riemannian manifold with positive Yamabe invariant, positive Q curvature and dimension at least 5, we prove the existence of a conformal metric with constant Q curvature. Our approach is based on the study of extremal problem for a new functional involving the Paneitz operator.

Sign of Green's function of Paneitz operators and the Q curvature

In a conformal class of metrics with positive Yamabe invariant, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of metrics with positive Q curvature. The condition is conformally invariant. We also prove some inequalities between the Green's functions of the conformal Laplacian operator and the Paneitz operator.

Paneitz operator for metrics near $S^3$

We derive the first and second variation formula for the Green's function pole's value of Paneitz operator on the standard three sphere. In particular it is shown that the first variation vanishes and the second variation is nonpositively definite. Moreover, the second variation vanishes only at the direction of conformal deformation. We also introduce a new invariant of the Paneitz operator and illustrate its close relation with the second eigenvalue and Sobolev inequality of Paneitz operator.

A Rigidity Theorem for the Hemisphere

We prove the following rigidity theorem: For an n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with boundary whose Ricci curvature is bounded by n-1 from below, if its boundary is isometric to the standard sphere of dimension n-1 and totally geodesic, then the manifold is isometric to the standard hemisphere.
