Variational Mapping of Chern Bands to Landau Levels: Application to Fractional Chern Insulators in Twisted MoTe$_2$

We present a theoretical study of mapping between Chern bands and generalized Landau levels in twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ ($t$MoTe$_2$), where fractional Chern insulators down to zero magnetic fields have been observed. We construct an exact Landau-level representation of moiré bands, where the basis functions, characterized by a uniform quantum geometry, are derived from Landau-level wavefunctions dressed by spinors aligned or antialigned with the layer pseudospin skyrmion field. We further generalize the dressed zeroth Landau level to a variational wavefunction with an ideal yet nonuniform quantum geometry and variationally maximize its weight in the first moiré band. The variational wavefunction has a high overlap with the first band and quantitatively captures the exact diagonalization spectra of fractional Chern insulators at hole-filling factors $ν_h=2/3$ and $3/5$, providing a clear theoretical mechanism for the formation and properties of the fractionalized states. Our work introduces a variational approach to studying fractional states by mapping Chern bands to Landau levels, with application to other systems beyond $t$MoTe$_2$ also demonstrated.

Deep Learning Sheds Light on Integer and Fractional Topological Insulators

Electronic topological phases of matter, characterized by robust boundary states derived from topologically nontrivial bulk states, are pivotal for next-generation electronic devices. However, understanding their complex quantum phases, especially at larger scales and fractional fillings with strong electron correlations, has long posed a formidable computational challenge. Here, we employ a deep learning framework to express the many-body wavefunction of topological states in twisted ${\rm MoTe_2}$ systems, where diverse topological states are observed. Leveraging neural networks, we demonstrate the ability to identify and characterize topological phases, including the integer and fractional Chern insulators as well as the $Z_2$ topological insulators. Our deep learning approach significantly outperforms traditional methods, not only in computational efficiency but also in accuracy, enabling us to study larger systems and differentiate between competing phases such as fractional Chern insulators and charge density waves. Our predictions align closely with experimental observations, highlighting the potential of deep learning techniques to explore the rich landscape of topological and strongly correlated phenomena.

Quantum Geometry Probed by Chiral Excitonic Optical Response of Chern Insulators

We theoretically derive the sum rule for the negative first moment of the absorptive optical conductivity with excitonic effects and establish its connection to the quantum weight $K$ and Chern number $C$ of the ground state. Applying this framework, we investigate the excitonic optical response of the Chern insulator at hole filling factor $ν=1$ in twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$. A single chiral exciton state, which selectively absorbs circularly polarized light of a specific handedness, dominates the optical sum rule. The chiral exciton state comprises two types of interlayer electron-hole transitions, which cancel out the total out-of-plane dipole moment. The absorption spectrum shows nearly perfect magnetic circular dichroism, which can be attributed to the nearly saturated bound $K \ge |C|$ of the Chern insulator under study. Our work illustrates the potential of using excitonic optical responses to probe quantum geometry encoded by $K$ and $C$ of Chern insulators in moiré superlattices.

Family of third-order topological insulators from Su-Schrieffer-Heeger stacking

We construct a family of chiral symmetry-protected third-order topological insulators by stacking Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains and provide a unified topological characterization by a series of Bott indices. Our approach is informed by the analytical solution of corner states for the model Hamiltonians written as a summation of the extended SSH model along three orthogonal directions. By utilizing the generalized Pauli matrices, an enumeration of the constructed model Hamiltonians generates ten distinct models, including the well-studied three-dimensional Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes model. By performing a boundary projection analysis for the ten models, we find that certain surfaces and hinges of the systems can exhibit, respectively, nontrivial second-order and first-order topology in the phase of the third-order topological insulators. Furthermore, we analyze the phase diagram for one of the predicted models and reveal a rich set of topological phases, including the third-order topological insulators, second-order weak topological insulators, and second-order nodal semimetals.

Visualization of intervalley coherent phase in PtSe2/HOPG heterojunction

Intervalley coherent (IVC) phase in graphene systems arises from the coherent superposition of wave functions of opposite valleys, whose direct microscopic visualization provides pivotal insight into the emergent physics but remains elusive. Here, we successfully visualize the IVC phase in a heterostructure of monolayer PtSe2 on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we observe a Root3 by Root3 modulation pattern superimposed on the higher-order moire superlattice of the heterostructure, which correlates with a small gap opening around the Fermi level and displays an anti-phase real-space conductance distribution of the two gap edges. Such modulation pattern and small-gap vanish on the heterostructure of monolayer PtSe2 on bilayer-graphene-covered SiC substrate, due to the increased carrier density in the bilayer graphene. We provide a theoretical mechanism that the Root3 by Root3 modulation pattern originates from the IVC phase of few-layer graphene, which is magnified by the higher-order moire superlattice. Our work achieves visualization of the IVC phase, and develops an avenue for its generation and amplification via a moiré interface.

Quantized Landau-level crossing checkerboard in large-angle twisted graphene

When charge transport occurs under conditions like topological protection or ballistic motion, the conductance of low-dimensional systems often exhibits quantized values in units of $e^{2}/h$, where $e$ and $h$ are the elementary charge and Planck's constant. Such quantization has been pivotal in quantum metrology and computing. Here, we demonstrate a novel quantized quantity: the ratio of the displacement field to the magnetic field, $D/B$, in large-twist-angle bilayer graphene. In the high magnetic field limit, Landau level crossings between the top and bottom layers manifest equal-sized checkerboard patterns throughout the $D/B$-$ν$ space. It stems from a peculiar electric-field-driven interlayer charge transfer at one elementary charge per flux quantum, leading to quantized intervals of critical displacement fields, (i.e., $δD$ = $\frac{e}{2πl_{B}^{2}}$, where $l_B$ is the magnetic length). Our findings suggest that interlayer charge transfer in the quantum Hall regime can yield intriguing physical phenomena, which has been overlooked in the past.

Topological phases, van Hove singularities, and spin texture in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene in the presence of proximity-induced spin-orbit couplings

We investigate magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) with proximity-induced Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings (SOC) in the top layer, as recently achieved experimentally. Utilizing the Bistritzer-MacDonald model with SOCs, we reveal a rich single-particle topological phase diagram featuring topological flat bands across different twist angles and interlayer hopping energies. The evolution of Dirac cones and Chern numbers is examined to understand the topological phase transitions. We find that all phases can be achieved with an experimentally accessible SOC strength ($\sim$1 meV) in systems with angles very close to the magic angle. Furthermore, the van Hove singularity for each topological flat band splits in the presence of SOC, significantly altering the electronic properties. Additionally, we investigate the spin textures of each band in momentum space, discovering a skyrmion-like spin texture in the center of the moiré Brillouin zone, which is correlated with the topological phase transitions and can be tuned via the SOCs and an out-of-plane electric field. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the topological flat bands, establishing a foundation for grasping the intrinsic and rich roles of SOCs in MATBG.

Observation of Ferromagnetic Phase in the Second Moiré Band of Twisted MoTe2

Flat bands and electron correlation in moiré lattices give rise to many exotic phases, including Mott insulators, superconductivity, and topological states. Within the first moiré band, integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall effects have been observed in twisted bilayer MoTe2 (tMoTe2) at one hole doping and fractional doping per moiré unit cell, respectively. When the second moiré band is fully hole doped, quantum spin Hall insulator has also been reported in tMoTe2 at a certain twist angle. Exotic topological states together with ferromagnetic (FM) states in the high moiré band can potentially exist as well. In this study, we report the observation of a FM phase in the second moiré band in tMoTe2. The FM phase can be tuned by both the doping level and displacement field. At filling around 2.58 holes per moiré unit cell, the FM phase reaches a Curie temperature of 3.5 K. A large displacement field can suppress the FM phase, like the FM phase at the filling of -1. Our results demonstrate the realization of time-reversal symmetry-breaking states in the higher moiré bands in tMoTe2.

Ferromagnetism and correlated insulating states in monolayer Mo33Te56

Kagome lattices have an inherent two-dimensional nature. Despite previous realizations in the monolayer limit, their abilities to drive emergent electronic states such as correlated insulators have remained unobserved. Here, we report the experimental realization of a new structural phase of monolayer Mo33Te56, characterized by its virtually global uniformity as a mirror-twin boundary loop superlattice embedded in an H-MoTe2 monolayer. Through a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and theoretical calculations, we unveil a kagome geometry along with multiple associated sets of kagome flat bands. Crucially, the partial filling of these kagome bands induces ferromagnetism as revealed by spin-polarized STM, and leads to a correlated insulating state exhibiting a hard gap as large as 15 meV. Our findings represent a major advance in kagome materials, offering a framework with clearer band structures and more intrinsic two-dimensional properties for exploring flat-band physics.

Topological flat bands, valley polarization, and interband superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with proximitized spin-orbit couplings

We study theoretically the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with proximity-induced Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings on the top layer. Topological flat bands (with three distinct phases) are generically realized by the spin-orbit couplings. Using a mean field analysis, we find that (partial) valley polarization prevails for a wide range of doping, suppressing the usual superconductivity with a pairing between time-reversal partners. Remarkably, we uncover that observable unconventional intervalley interband phonon-mediated superconductivity (with the highest $T_c\approx 1.2$K) can coexist with strong valley imbalance due to the approximate Fermi surface nesting between two flat bands not related by time-reversal symmetry, and the dominant pairing is an intersublattice Ising pairing, corresponding to a mixture of $p$- and $d$-waves. In contrast, the intrasublattice Ising phonon-mediated superconductivity with $s$- and $f$-wave mixing emerges in the absence of valley imbalance. Our work reveals an unprecedented route of realizing unconventional superconductivity.

Tunable superconductivity in electron- and hole-doped Bernal bilayer graphene

Graphene-based, high quality two-dimensional electronic systems have emerged as a highly tunable platform for studying superconductivity. Specifically, superconductivity has been observed in both electron-doped and hole-doped twisted graphene moire systems, whereas in crystalline graphene systems, superconductivity has so far only been observed in hole-doped rhombohedral trilayer and hole-doped Bernal bilayer graphene (BBG). Recently, enhanced superconductivity has been demonstrated in BBG due to the proximity with a monolayer WSe2. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity and a series of flavor-symmetry-breaking phases in both electron- and hole-doped BBG/WSe2 device by electrostatic doping. The strength of the observed superconductivity is tunable by applied vertical electric fields. The maximum Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature for the electron- and hole-doped superconductivity is about 210 mK and 400 mK, respectively. Superconductivities emerge only when applied electric fields drive BBG electron or hole wavefunctions toward the WSe2 layer, underscoring the importance of the WSe2 layer in the observed superconductivity. We find the hole-doped superconductivity violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit, consistent with an Ising-like superconductor. In contrast, the electron-doped superconductivity obeys the Pauli limit, even though the proximity induced Ising spin-orbit coupling is also notable in the conduction band. Our findings highlight the rich physics associated with the conduction band in BBG, paving the way for further studies into the superconducting mechanisms of crystalline graphene and the development of novel superconductor devices based on BBG.

Quantum simulation of honeycomb lattice model by high-order moiré pattern

Moiré superlattices have become an emergent solid-state platform for simulating quantum lattice models. However, in single moiré device, Hamiltonians parameters like lattice constant, hopping and interaction terms can hardly be manipulated, limiting the controllability and accessibility of moire quantum simulator. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that high-order moiré patterns in graphene-monolayered xenon/krypton heterostructures can simulate honeycomb model in mesoscale, with in-situ tunable Hamiltonians parameters. The length scale of simulated lattice constant can be tuned by annealing processes, which in-situ adjusts intervalley interaction and hopping parameters in the simulated honeycomb lattice. The sign of the lattice constant can be switched by choosing xenon or krypton monolayer deposited on graphene, which controls sublattice degree of freedom and valley arrangment of Dirac fermions. Our work establishes a novel path for experimentally simulating the honeycomb model with tunable parameters by high-order moiré patterns.

Electrically tuned topology and magnetism in twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ at $ν_h=1$

We present a theoretical study of an interaction-driven quantum phase diagram of twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ at hole filling factor $ν_h=1$ as a function of twist angle $θ$ and layer potential difference $V_z$, where $V_z$ is generated by an applied out-of-plane electric field. At $V_z=0$, the phase diagram includes quantum anomalous Hall insulators in the intermediate $θ$ regime and topologically trivial multiferroic states with coexisting ferroelectricity and magnetism in both small and large $θ$ regimes. There can be two transitions from the quantum anomalous Hall insulator phase to topologically trivial out-of-plane ferromagnetic phase, and finally to in-plane 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic phase as $|V_z|$ increases, or a single transition without the intervening ferromagnetic phase. We show explicitly that the spin vector chirality of various 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic states can be electrically switched. We discuss the connection between the experimentally measured Curie-Weiss temperature and the low-temperature magnetic order based on an effective Heisenberg model with magnetic anisotropy.

Majorana zero modes in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides homobilayers

Semiconductor moiré superlattices provide a highly tunable platform to study the interplay between electron correlation and band topology. For example, the generalized Kane-Mele-Hubbard model can be simulated by the topological moiré flat bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides homobilayers. For this system, we obtain the filling factor, twist angle, and electric field-dependent quantum phase diagrams with a plethora of phases, including the quantum spin Hall insulator, the in-plane antiferromagnetic state, the out-of-plane antiferromagnetic Chern insulator, the spin-polarized Chern insulator, the in-plane ferromagnetic state, and the 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic state. We predict that a gate-defined junction formed between the quantum spin Hall insulator phase with proximitized superconductivity and magnetic phases with in-plane magnetization (either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic) can realize one-dimensional topological superconductor with Majorana zero modes. Our proposal introduces semiconductor moiré homobilayers as an electrically tunable Majorana platform with no need of an external magnetic field.

Interaction-driven topological phase diagram of twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$

Twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ is a promising platform to investigate the interplay between band topology and many-body interaction. We present a theoretical study of its interaction-driven quantum phase diagrams based on a three-orbital model, which can be viewed as a generalization of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with one additional orbital and long-range Coulomb repulsion. We predict a cascade of phase transitions tuned by the twist angle $θ$. At the hole filling factor $ν=1$ (one hole per moiré unit cell), the ground state can be in the multiferroic phase with coexisting spontaneous layer polarization and magnetism, the quantum anomalous Hall phase, and finally the topologically trivial magnetic phases, as $θ$ increases from $1.5^{\circ}$ to $5^{\circ}$. At $ν=2$, the ground state can have a second-order phase transition between an antiferromagnetic phase and the quantum spin Hall phase as $θ$ passes through a critical value. The dependence of the phase boundaries on model parameters such as the gate-to-sample distance, the dielectric constant, and the moiré potential amplitude is examined. The predicted phase diagrams can guide the search for topological phases in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers.

Nematic excitonic insulator in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré heterobilayers

We study the effect of inter-electron Coulomb interactions on the displacement field induced topological phase transition in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moiré heterobilayers. We find a nematic excitonic insulator (NEI) phase that breaks the moiré superlattice's three-fold rotational symmetry and preempts the topological phase transition in both AA and AB stacked heterobilayers when the interlayer tunneling is weak, or when the Coulomb interaction is not strongly screened. The nematicity originates from the frustration between the nontrivial spatial structure of the interlayer tunneling, which is crucial to the existence of the topological Chern band, and the interlayer coherence induced by the Coulomb interaction that favors uniformity in layer pseudo-spin orientations. We construct a unified effective two-band model that captures the physics near the band inversion and applies to both AA and AB stacked heterobilayers. Within the two-band model, the competition between the NEI phase and the Chern insulator phase can be understood as the switching of the energetic order between the $s$-wave and the $p$-wave excitons upon increasing the interlayer tunneling.

Generalization of Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes model to arbitrary dimensions

The Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (BBH) model [Science 357, 61 (2017)], featuring bulk quadrupole moment, edge dipole moments, and corner states, is a paradigm of both higher-order topological insulators and topological multipole insulators. In this work, we generalize the BBH model to arbitrary dimensions by utilizing the Clifford algebra. For the generalized BBH model, the analytical solution of corner states can be directly constructed in a unified way. Based on the solution of corner states and chiral symmetry analysis, we develop a general boundary projection method to extract the boundary Hamiltonians, which turns out to be the BBH models of lower dimension and reveals the dimensional hierarchy.

Acoustic phonon contribution to the resistivity of twisted bilayer graphene

We calculate the contribution to the doping ($n$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of the electrical resistivity of twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) due to scattering by acoustic phonons. Our calculation retains the full Bistritzer-MacDonald (BM) band structure, with a focus on understanding the role of the complicated geometric features present in the BM band structure on electronic transport theory. We find that the band geometry plays an important role in determining the resistivity, giving an intricate dependence on both $n$ and $T$ that mirrors features in the band structure and complicates the Bloch-Grüneisen (BG) crossover. Our calculations predict pronounced departures from the standard simplistic expectation of a linear $T$-dependence above the BG crossover. In particular, we are able to explain the presence of the resistance peaks that have been observed in experiment, as well as quantitatively predict the temperatures at which they occur. Our calculated theoretical results are germane to an ongoing debate over the existence of a strange metal state in TBLG by providing a quantitatively accurate theory for the TBLG resistivity at finite temperatures.
