R&D of cosmic ray detection module with liquid scintillator and wavelength shift fiber

For neutrino physics and rare event searches, background related to cosmic muons poses a notable challenge, and must be identified and rejected. It is also a challenge to control the cost with good performance for a large array of cosmic ray detection. We proposed a cosmic ray detection module with liquid scintillator and wavelength-shifting fibers for its reasonable cost and performances. The results from the measurements of a prototype with Muon indicate that the detector's photoelectron response is good. % comparing to the expectation. The outcomes of this study hold significant potential for applications in cosmic ray observation experiments and underground rare-event detection, providing a viable option for future large-scale observatories. This work highlights the feasibility of liquid scintillator-based detectors in addressing current and emerging challenges in particle physics and astrophysics.

Characterization of SiPMs at 40 K for neutrino coherent detection based on pure CsI

Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), as the core photoelectric sensor for coherent neutrino detection in low-temperature pure CsI, its working performance directly determines the measurement accuracy of the scintillator light yield. Our previous research has fully demonstrated the performance of pure CsI at liquid nitrogen temperature. More intriguingly, its performance is expected to be even better at 40 K. However, the performance characteristics of SiPM in the 40 K temperature range still remain to be explored. In this study, a self-developed adjustable temperature control system ranging from 30 K to 293 K was built to investigate the key performance parameters of SiPM at different temperatures, such as single photoelectron spectrum, gain, breakdown voltage, dark count rate, after-pulse, internal crosstalk, and single photoelectron resolution. Special emphasis was placed on examining the key performance parameters of SiPM in the 40 K temperature range to evaluate its feasibility for light yield measurement in this temperature range. The results show that this study obtained the parameter variation trends and optimal working conditions of 3 types of SiPM at different temperatures, thereby improving the sensitivity of the detector. This research provides important technical support for low-temperature detection in neutrino physics experiments.

A Comprehensive Monte Carlo Simulation Tool on Electron Transport in Noble Gases and Liquids

For the particle detectors based on noble gases or liquids, it is essential to understand the transport dynamic and the properties of the electrons. We report the development of a tool for electron transport in noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, or Xe, and liquids Ar, Kr, or Xe. The simulation, implemented in C++ and MATLAB, is based on electron-atom collisions, including elastic scattering, excitation and ionization. We validate the program through assessing the electron's swarm parameters, specifically the drift velocity and the diffusion coefficient. For electron transport in liquids, two models are discussed and both are used for the construction of the Monte Carlo framework based on the Cohen Leker theory. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the simulation tool, which offers a valuable support for detector design and data analysis.

Study on the linearity of 20" dynode and MCP PMTs

The linearity of charge response is an important feature of photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for physics measurements, especially the newly developed 20" MCP-PMT. In this paper, in addition to the traditional method of double light sources, we applied another relative method of 20" PMT to 3" PMT to measure the linearity of the 20" dynode and MCP PMTs in pulse mode with a waveform digitizer. The measurements show a good linear response of 20" PMTs to 1,000 photoelectrons (p.e.). The correlations of the amplitude, rise-time, fall-time, FWHM, baseline recovery, overshoot, and late-pulse to the output charge of the 20" PMTs derived from the waveform analysis, where the MCP-PMT shows very different features compared to the dynode-PMT in particular.

Signal Optimization with HV divider of MCP-PMT for JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using a 20 kiloton underground liquid scintillator detector (CD). One of the keys is the energy resolution of the CD to reach <3% at 1 MeV, where totally 15,000 MCP-PMT will be used. The optimization of the 20-inch MCP-PMT is very important for better detection efficiency and stable performance. In this work, we will show the study to optimize the MCP-PMT working configuration for charge measurement. Particularly, the quality of PMT signal is another key for high-precision neutrino experiments while most of these experiments are affected by the overshoot of PMT signal from the positive HV scheme. The overshoot coupled with positive HV which is troubling trigger, dead time and precise charge measurement, we have studied to control it to less than 1% of signal amplitude for a better physics measurement. In this article, on the one hand, the optimized HV divider ratio will be presented here to improve its collection efficiency; on the other hand, we will introduce the method to reduce the ratio of overshoot from 10% to 1%.

A study of the new hemispherical 9-inch PMT

The new hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with 9 inch diameter from Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co.,Ltd (HZC) have been studied. Narrow transit time spread (FWHM=2.35 ns) accompanied by small nonlinearity (750 photoelectrons at 5%) and high gain (1E7 ) with good single photoelectron (PE) resolution have been observed. 11 PMTs of this type are deployed and studied in the prototype detector for JUNO at IHEP, China.
