Moir\'e spintronics: Emergent phenomena, material realization and machine learning accelerating discovery

Twisted van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a promising platform for exploring exotic quantum phenomena and engineering novel material properties in two dimensions, potentially revolutionizing developments in spintronics. This Review provides an overview of recent progress on emerging moir\'e spintronics in twisted vdW materials, with a particular focus on two-dimensional magnetic materials. Following a brief introduction to the general features of twisted vdW materials, we discuss recent theoretical and experimental studies on stacking-dependent interlayer magnetism, non-collinear spin textures, moir\'e magnetic exchange interactions, moir\'e skyrmions and moir\'e magnons. We further highlight the potential of machine learning to accelerate the discovery and design of multifunctional materials for moir\'e spintronics. Finally, we conclude by addressing the most pressing challenges and potential opportunities in this rapidly expanding field.

Topological Phases in Magnonics

Magnonics or magnon spintronics is an emerging field focusing on generating, detecting, and manipulating magnons. As charge-neutral quasi-particles, magnons are promising information carriers because of their low energy dissipation and long coherence length. In the past decade, topological phases in magnonics have attracted intensive attention due to their fundamental importance in condensed-matter physics and potential applications of spintronic devices. In this review, we mainly focus on recent progress in topological magnonics, such as the Hall effect of magnons, magnon Chern insulators, topological magnon semimetals, etc. In addition, the evidence supporting topological phases in magnonics and candidate materials are also discussed and summarized. The aim of this review is to provide readers with a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the recent developments in topological magnonics.

Topological Aspects of Antiferromagnets

The long fascination antiferromagnetic materials have exerted on the scientific community over about a century has been entirely renewed recently with the discovery of several unexpected phenomena including various classes of anomalous spin and charge Hall effects and unconventional magnonic transport, but also homochiral magnetic entities such as skyrmions. With these breakthroughs, antiferromagnets standout as a rich playground for the investigation of novel topological behaviors, and as promising candidate materials for disruptive low-power microelectronic applications. Remarkably, the newly discovered phenomena are all related to the topology of the magnetic, electronic or magnonic ground state of the antiferromagnets. This review exposes how non-trivial topology emerges at different levels in antiferromagnets and explores the novel mechanisms that have been discovered recently. We also discuss how novel classes of quantum magnets could enrich the currently expanding field of antiferromagnetic spintronics and how spin transport can in turn favor a better understanding of exotic quantum excitations.

Cooperative Spin Caloritronic Devices

We report a concept of thermoelectric devices, cooperative spin caloritronics device (CSCD), where cooperation between two or more energy channels such as spin, charge and heat currents can significantly enhance energy efficiency of spin caloritronic devices. We derive the figure of merit and the maximum efficiency due to cooperative effect in analytic forms for a CSCD. Cooperative effects significantly improve the figure of merit and the maximum efficiency in spin caloritronic systems with multiply couplings effects. Several examples of CSCDs, including electrical and thermal current induced DW motion, spin-thermoelectric power generator and spin-thermoelectric cooling/heating, are studied to illustrate the usefulness of the cooperative effect. We compare the efficiency of CSCD with several recently proposed spin caloritronic devices. Our scheme provides a novel route to seek high performance materials and structures for future spin caloritronic devices.
