Single-Photon Advantage in Quantum Cryptography Beyond QKD

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can be used to establish a secret key between trusted parties. Many practical use-cases in communication networks, however, involve parties who do not trust each other. A fundamental cryptographic building block for such distrustful scenarios is quantum coin flipping, which has been investigated only in few experimental studies to date, all of which used probabilistic quantum light sources imposing fundamental limitations. Here, we experimentally implement a quantum strong coin flipping protocol using single-photon states and demonstrate a quantum advantage compared to both classical realizations and implementations using faint laser pulses. We achieve this by employing a state-of-the-art deterministic quantum dot light source in combination with fast, random polarization-state encoding enabling sufficiently low quantum bit error ratio. By demonstrating a single-photon quantum advantage in a cryptographic primitive beyond QKD, our work represents a major advance towards the implementation of complex cryptographic tasks in a future quantum internet.

NetworkDynamics.jl -- Composing and simulating complex networks in Julia

NetworkDynamics.jl is an easy-to-use and computationally efficient package for working with heterogeneous dynamical systems on complex networks, written in Julia, a high-level, high-performance, dynamic programming language. By combining state of the art solver algorithms from DifferentialEquations.jl with efficient data structures, NetworkDynamics.jl achieves top performance while supporting advanced features like events, algebraic constraints, time-delays, noise terms and automatic differentiation.

Effect of Topology upon Relay Synchronization in Triplex Neuronal Networks

Relay synchronization in complex networks is characterized by the synchronization of remote parts of the network due to their interaction via a relay. In multilayer networks, distant layers that are not connected directly can synchronize due to signal propagation via relay layers. In this work, we investigate relay synchronization of partial synchronization patterns like chimera states in three-layer networks of interacting FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators. We demonstrate that the phenomenon of relay synchronization is robust to topological random inhomogeneities of small-world type in the layer networks. We show that including randomness in the connectivity structure either of the remote network layers, or of the relay layer, increases the range of interlayer coupling strength where relay synchronization can be observed.
