Well-Posedness for Dean-Kawasaki Models of Vlasov-Fokker-Planck Type

We consider systems of interacting particles which are described by a second order Langevin equation. The class of equations considered includes the situation where the particle evolution is governed by Hamiltonian dynamics with additional damping and noise satisfying a fluctuation-dissipation relation. Also covered are systems of two equations describing an evolution of interacting agents, as arising in several descriptions of active matter, including models for flocking and swarming. We first show that such particle systems can be represented exactly by so-called equations of fluctuating hydrodynamics, which in this case are stochastic versions of a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type equation. While the derivation given here is simple, it is a blueprint for the rigorous derivation of equations of fluctuating hydrodynamics. We then show a dichotomy previously known for purely diffusive (first order) systems carries over to the second order setting considered here: Solutions exist for suitable atomic initial data, in which case the solution is, properly scaled, the empirical density describing the particle system. For smooth initial data, however, we prove that no solution exists.

Adiabatic Approximation of Coarse Grained Second Order Response

We propose estimators for dynamic second order response theory in coarse grained variables for driven out-of-equilibrium subsystems. The error is controlled through the the notion of subsystem spectral gap for the convergence of coarse grained observables.

Dean-Kawasaki equation with initial condition in the space of positive distributions

We show that the Dean--Kawasaki equation does not admit nontrivial solutions in the space of tempered measures. More specifically, we consider martingale solutions taking values, and with initial conditions, in the subspace of measures admitting infinite mass and satisfying some integrability conditions. Following work by the first author, Lehmann and von Renesse [arXiv:1806.05018], we show that the equation only admits solutions if the initial measure is a discrete measure. Our result extends the previously mentioned works by allowing measures with infinite mass.

Coarse-grained Second Order Response Theory

While linear response theory, manifested by the fluctuation dissipation theorem, can be applied at any level of coarse graining, nonlinear response theory is fundamentally of microscopic nature. For perturbations of equilibrium systems, we develop an exact theoretical framework for analyzing the nonlinear (second order) response of coarse grained observables to time-dependent perturbations, using a path-integral formalism. The resulting expressions involve correlations of the observable with coarse grained path weights. The time symmetric part of these weights depends on the paths and perturbation protocol in a complex manner; in addition, the absence of Markovianity prevents slicing of the coarse-grained path integral. We show that these difficulties can be overcome and the response function can be expressed in terms of path weights corresponding to a single-step perturbation. This formalism thus leads to an extrapolation scheme where measuring linear responses of coarse-grained variables suffices to determine their second order response. We illustrate the validity of the formalism with an exactly solvable four-state model and the near-critical Ising model.
