Thermodynamic Cost of Regeneration in a Quantum Stirling Cycle

We study the standard four-stroke regenerative quantum Stirling heat engine cycle, which assumes local thermal equilibrium at each stage, within the standard weak-coupling, Markovian open quantum system framework. We point out that the regeneration process is not thermodynamically free in a reduced open-system description, and we treat the required work input as an explicit regeneration cost by modifying the cycle efficiency accordingly. We consider two working substances--a single spin-$1/2$ and a pair of interacting spin-$1/2$ particles--and investigate the cycle performance by taking the regeneration cost at its minimum value set by the Carnot heat-pump limit. For comparison, we also analyze the conventional Stirling cycle without regeneration under the same conditions. The super-Carnot efficiencies reported under the cost-free regeneration assumption disappear once the regeneration cost is included: the modified efficiency stays below the Carnot bound, while still remaining higher than the efficiency of the conventional Stirling cycle. For the conventional Stirling cycle, we provide a rigorous Carnot bound using quantum relative entropy, whereas for the regenerative cycle we derive a sufficient lower bound on the regeneration cost that guarantees thermodynamic consistency. Finally, we suggest three candidate quantum regenerator models for future work.

Quantum Coherence and non-Markovianity in a Noisy Quantum Tunneling Problem

We investigate the coherence and non-Markovianity of a quantum tunneling system whose barrier is fluctuated by a telegraph noise, and its energy gap is modulated by Gaussian noise. With the help of averaging method, the system dynamics are analytically derived, and the analytical expression for coherence measure and non-Markovianity for the very limited parameter regimes for both initially coherent and non-coherent states are obtained. We observe non-Markovian dynamics in a situation where the Kubo number is high. It is also found that there is no strong relation between the coherence of the system and non-Markovianity dynamics except in a region in which these two tend to change their behavior at the intermediate noise color for two initial states.

Quantum Carnot cycle with inner friction

A single driven spin is investigated as the working substance of a six-stroke irreversible quantum Carnot cycle. The role of inner friction associated with the finite-time adiabatic transformations on the cycle efficiency and the harvested work are investigated in detail. The inner friction is found to significantly reduce the work output and the cycle efficiency which can make the engine incapable to produce positive work for the too fast adiabatic transformations. The ideal Carnot efficiency is found to be reached only for the quasi-static transformations. A deviation of the cycle efficiency from the classical Carnot efficiency has been given by an efficiency lag which is directly related to the total entropy production due to the inner friction. The released heat in the relaxation processes of the cycle are associated with the entropy production and the inner friction. The extension of the results for a scale invariant quantum working substance and the possible experimental implementation of the irreversible quantum Carnot cycle in a liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance setup are also discussed.

A photonic Carnot engine powered by a quantum spin-star network

We propose a spin-star network, where a central spin-$1/2$ is coupled with XXZ interaction to $N$ outer spin-$1/2$ particles, as a quantum fuel. If the network is in thermal equilibrium with a cold bath, the central spin can have an effective temperature larger than the bath one and scaling nonlinearly with $N$. The nonlinearity can be tuned to $N^2, N^3$ or $N^4$ with the anisotropy parameter of the coupling. Using a stream of central-spin particles to pump a micromaser cavity, we calculate the dynamics of the cavity field using a coarse-grained master equation. Our study reveals that the central-spin beam effectively acts as a hot reservoir to the cavity field and brings the field to a thermal steady-state whose temperature benefits from the same nonlinear enhancement with $N$, and results in a highly efficient photonic Carnot engine. The validity of our conclusions is tested against the presence of atomic and cavity damping using a microscopic master equation method for typical microwave cavity-QED parameters. An alternative equivalent scheme where the spin-$1/2$ is coupled to a macroscopic spin-$(N/2)$ particle is also discussed.

Irreversible Work and Internal Friction in a Quantum Otto Cycle of a Single Arbitrary Spin

We propose an arbitrary driven spin as the working fluid of a quantum Otto cycle in the presence of internal friction. The role of total allocated time to the adiabatic branches of the cycle, generated by different control field profiles, on the extractable work and the thermal efficiency are analyzed in detail. The internal friction is characterized by the excess entropy production and quantitatively determined by studying the closeness of an actual unitary process to an infinitely long one via quantum relative entropy. It is found that the non-ideal, finite-time adiabatic transformations negatively effect the work output and the thermal efficiency of the quantum heat engine. The non-monotone dependence of the work output, thermal efficiency, entropy production and the internal friction on the total adiabatic time are elucidated. It is also found that almost frictionless adiabatic transformations with small entropy production can be obtained in a short adiabatic time.

Irreversibility in a unitary finite-rate protocol: The concept of internal friction

The concept of internal friction, a fully quantum mechanical phenomena, is investigated in a simple, experimentally accessible quantum system in which a spin-1/2 is driven by a transverse magnetic field in a quantum adiabatic process. The irreversible production of the waste energy due to the quantum friction is quantitatively analyzed in a forward-backward unitary transform of the system Hamiltonian by using the quantum relative entropy between the actual density matrix obtained in a parametric transformation and the one in a reversible adiabatic process. Analyzing the role of total transformation time and the different pulse control schemes on the internal friction reveal the non-monotone character of the internal friction as a function of the total protocol time and the possibility for almost frictionless solutions in finite-time transformations.

Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model in a Quantum Otto Cycle

Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model of two anisotropically interacting spins in a magnetic field is proposed as a working substance of a quantum Otto engine to explore and exploit the anisotropy effects for the optimization of engine operation. Three different cases for the adiabatic branches of the cycle have been considered. In the first two cases, either the magnetic field or coupling strength are changed; while in the third case, both the magnetic field and the coupling strength are changed by the same ratio. The system parameters for which the engine can operate similar to or dramatically different from the engines of non-interacting spins or of coupled spins with Ising model or isotropic XY model interactions are determined. In particular, the role of anisotropy to enhance cooperative work, and to optimize maximum work with high efficiency, as well as to operate the engine near the Carnot bound are revealed.

Quantum Otto engine with a spin $1/2$ coupled to an arbitrary spin

We investigate a quantum heat engine with a working substance of two particles, one with a spin $1/2$ and the other with an arbitrary spin (spin $s$), coupled by Heisenberg exchange interaction, and subject to an external magnetic field. The engine operates in a quantum Otto cycle. Work harvested in the cycle and its efficiency are calculated using quantum thermodynamical definitions. It is found that the engine has higher efficiencies at higher spins and can harvest work at higher exchange interaction strengths. The role of exchange coupling and spin $s$ on the work output and the thermal efficiency is studied in detail. In addition, the engine operation is analyzed from the perspective of local work and efficiency. The local work definition is generalized for the global changes and the conditions when the global work can be equal or more than the sum of the local works are determined.

Rabi model as a quantum coherent heat engine: From quantum biology to superconducting circuits

We propose a multilevel quantum heat engine with a working medium described by a generalized Rabi model which consists of a two-level system coupled to a single mode bosonic field. The model is constructed to be a continuum limit of a quantum biological description of light harvesting complexes so that it can amplify quantum coherence by a mechanism which is a quantum analog of classical Huygen's clocks. The engine operates in quantum Otto cycle where the working medium is coupled to classical heat baths in the isochoric processes of the four stroke cycle; while either the coupling strength or the resonance frequency is changed in the adiabatic stages. We found that such an engine can produce work with an efficiency close to Carnot bound when it operates at low temperatures and in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Interplay of quantum coherence and quantum correlations on the engine performance is discussed in terms of second order coherence, quantum mutual information and logarithmic negativity of entanglement. We point out that the proposed quantum Otto engine can be implemented experimentally with the modern circuit quantum electrodynamic systems where flux qubits can be coupled ultrastrongly to superconducting transmission line resonators.

Non-Hermitian quantum dynamics and entanglement of coupled nonlinear resonators

We consider a generalization of recently proposed non-Hermitian model for resonant cavities coupled by a chiral mirror by taking into account number non-conservation and nonlinear interactions. We analyze non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of populations and entanglement of the cavity modes. We find that an interplay of initial coherence and non-Hermitian coupling leads to a counterintuitive population transfer. While an initially coherent cavity mode is depleted, the other empty cavity can be populated more or less than the initially filled one. Moreover, presence of nonlinearity yields population collapse and revival as well as bipartite entanglement of the cavity modes. In addition to coupled cavities, we point out that similar models can be found in $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric Bose-Hubbard dimers of Bose-Einstein condensates or in coupled soliton-plasmon waveguides. We specifically illustrate quantum dynamics of populations and entanglement in a heuristic model that we propose for a soliton-plasmon system with soliton amplitude dependent asymmetric interaction. Degree of asymmetry, nonlinearity and coherence are examined to control plasmon excitations and soliton-plasmon entanglement. Relations to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric lasers and Jahn-Teller systems are pointed out.

Quantum correlated heat engine with nonlinear spin-spin interactions

We propose a four level quantum heat engine in Otto cycle with a working substance of two spins subject to an external magnetic field and coupled to each other by a one-axis twisting spin squeezing nonlinear interaction. We calculate the positive work and the efficiency of the engine for different parameter regimes. In particular, we investigate the effects of quantum correlations at the end of the two isochoric processes of the Otto cycle, as measured by the entanglement of formation and quantum discord, on the work extraction and efficiency. The regimes where the quantum correlations could enhance the efficiency and work extraction are characterized.

Dissipative dynamics of atom-field entanglement in the ultrastrong-coupling regime

The dynamics of atom-field entanglement for a system composed of two atoms resonantly coupled to a single mode leaky cavity field has been investigated beyond rotating wave approximation (RWA). By using monogamic relation for entanglement of formation (EOF) as well as the lower bound of EOF for bipartite mixed states in higher dimensions, contrary to the RWA case, the atom-field system in the steady states is found to be entangled in the strong-coupling regime and the entanglement can grow as a function of atom-field coupling strength.

Dissipative dynamics of quantum correlations in the strong-coupling regime

The dynamics of entanglement and quantum discord between two identical qubits strongly interacting with a common single mode leaky cavity field have been investigated beyond the rotating wave approximation (RWA) by using recently derived Lindblad type quantum optical master equation [F. Beaudoin, J.M. Gambetta, A. Blais, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 84}, 043832 (2011)] that can describe the losses of the cavity field in a strong atom-field coupling regime. Contrary to previous investigations of the same model in the dissipative regime by using the standard Lindblad quantum optical master equation in a strong-coupling regime, the atom-field steady states are found to be cavity decay rate independent and have a very simple structure determined solely by the overlap of initial atomic state with the subradiant state which is valid for all coupling regimes. Non-RWA dynamics are found to have remarkable effects on the steady state quantum discord and entanglement that cannot be achieved under RWA conditions, for instance, they can induce steady state entanglement even for the initial states that have no overlap with the subradiant state. Moreover, the non-RWA dynamics are found to reverse the initial state dependence of steady state entanglement and quantum discord contrary to the RWA case.

Classical memoryless noise-induced maximally discordant mixed separable steady states

We have investigated the dynamics of quantum discord and entanglement for two qubits subject to independent global transverse and/or longitudinal memoryless noisy classical fields. Global transverse and/or longitudinal random fields are found to drive the system to maximally discordant mixed separable steady states for suitable initial conditions. Moreover, two independent noises in the system are found to enhance both the steady state randomness and quantum discord in the absence of entanglement for some initial states.

Correlation and nonlocality measures as indicators of quantum phase transitions in several critical systems

We have investigated the quantum phase transitions in the ground states of several critical systems, including transverse field Ising and XY models as well as XY with multiple spin interactions, XXZ and the collective system Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models, by using different quantumness measures, such as entanglement of formation, quantum discord, as well as its classical counterpart, measurement-induced disturbance and the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-Bell function. Measurement-induced disturbance is found to detect the first and second order phase transitions present in these critical systems, while, surprisingly, it is found to fail to signal the infinite-order phase transition present in the XXZ model. Remarkably, the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-Bell function is found to detect all the phase transitions, even when quantum and classical correlations are zero for the relevant ground state.

Creation of quantum correlations between two atoms in a dissipative environment from an initial vacuum state

We have investigated the effect of counter-rotating terms on the dynamics of entanglement and quantum discord between two identical atoms interacting with a lossy single mode cavity field for a system initially in a vacuum state. The counter-rotating terms are found to lead to steady states in the long time limit which can have high quantum discord, but have no entanglement. The effect of cavity decay rate on this steady state quantum discord has been also investigated, surprisingly, the increase in cavity decay rate is found to both enhance and maximize the steady quantum discord for separable states.

Control and manipulation of entanglement between two coupled qubits by fast pulses

We have investigated the analytical and numerical dynamics of entanglement for two qubits that interact with each other via Heisenberg XXX-type interaction and subject to local time-specific external kick and Gaussian pulse-type magnetic fields in x-y plane. The qubits have been assumed to be initially prepared in different pure separable and maximally entangled states and the effect of the strength and the direction of external fast pulses on concurrence has been investigated. The carefully designed kick or pulse sequences are found to enable one to obtain constant long-lasting entanglement with desired magnitude. Moreover, the time ordering effects are found to be important in the creation and manipulation of entanglement by external fields.

Entanglement dynamics of two qubits under the influence of external kicks and Gaussian pulses

We have investigated the dynamics of entanglement between two spin-1/2 qubits that are subject to independent kick and Gaussian pulse type external magnetic fields analytically as well as numerically. Dyson time ordering effect on the dynamics is found to be important for the sequence of kicks. We show that "almost-steady" high entanglement can be created between two initially unentangled qubits by using carefully designed kick or pulse sequences.
