Equations of motion approach to the spin-1/2 Ising model on the Bethe lattice

We exactly solve the ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising model on the Bethe lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field by means of the equations of motion method within the Green's function formalism. In particular, such an approach is applied to an isomorphic model of localized Fermi particles interacting via an intersite Coulomb interaction. A complete set of eigenoperators is found together with the corresponding eigenvalues. The Green's functions and the correlation functions are written in terms of a finite set of parameters to be self-consistently determined. A procedure is developed, that allows us to exactly fix the unknown parameters in the case of a Bethe lattice with any coordination number z. Non-local correlation functions up to four points are also provided together with a study of the relevant thermodynamic quantities.

Underdoped cuprates phenomenology in the 2D Hubbard model within COM(SCBA)

The two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied within the Composite Operator Method (COM) with the residual self-energy computed in the Self-Consistent Born Approximation (SCBA). COM describes interacting electrons in terms of the new elementary excitations appearing in the system owing to strong correlations; residual interactions among these excitations are treated within the SCBA. The anomalous features appearing in the spectral function A(k,ω), the momentum distribution function n(k) and the Fermi surface are analyzed for various values of the filling (from overdoped to underdoped region) in the intermediate coupling regime at low temperatures. For low doping, in contrast with the ordinary Fermi-liquid behavior of a weakly-correlated metal found at high doping, we report the opening of a pseudogap and some non-Fermi-liquid features as measured for cuprates superconductors. In addition, we show the presence of kinks in the calculated electronic dispersion in agreement with ARPES data.

Non-ergodic dynamics of the extended anisotropic Heisenberg chain

The issue of ergodicity is often underestimated. The presence of zero-frequency excitations in bosonic Green's functions determine the appearance of zero-frequency momentum-dependent quantities in correlation functions. The implicit dependence of matrix elements make such quantities also relevant in the computation of susceptibilities. Consequently, the correct determination of these quantities is of great relevance and the well-established practice of fixing them by assuming the ergodicity of the dynamics is quite questionable as it is not justifiable a priori by no means. In this manuscript, we have investigated the ergodicity of the dynamics of the $z$-component of the spin in the 1D Heisenberg model with anisotropic nearest-neighbor and isotropic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We have obtained the zero-temperature phase diagram in the thermodynamic limit by extrapolating Exact and Lanczos diagonalization results computed on chains with sizes $L = 6 ÷26$. Two distinct non-ergodic regions have been found: one for $J^\prime/J_z \lesssim 0.3$ and $|J_\perp|/J_z < 1$ and another for $J^\prime/J_z \lesssim 0.25$ and $|J_\perp|/J_z = 1$. On the contrary, finite-size scaling of $T \neq 0$ results, obtained by means of Exact diagonalization on chains with sizes $L = 4 ÷18$, indicates an ergodic behavior of dynamics in the whole range of parameters.

Bosonic sector of the two-dimensional Hubbard model studied within a two-pole approximation

The charge and spin dynamics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the paramagnetic phase is first studied by means of the two-pole approximation within the framework of the Composite Operator Method. The fully self-consistent scheme requires: no decoupling, the fulfillment of both Pauli principle and hydrodynamics constraints, the simultaneous solution of fermionic and bosonic sectors and a very rich momentum dependence of the response functions. The temperature and momentum dependencies, as well as the dependency on the Coulomb repulsion strength and the filling, of the calculated charge and spin susceptibilities and correlation functions are in very good agreement with the numerical calculations present in the literature.

The energy-scale-dependent Composite Operator Method for the single-impurity Anderson model

The recently developed energy-scale-dependent Composite Operator Method is applied to the single-impurity Anderson model. A fully self-consistent solution is given and analyzed. At very low temperatures, the density of states presents, on the top of the high-energy background, a Kondo-like peak whose parameter dependence is discussed in detail. The proposed method reproduces the exact results known in the literature with very low numerical effort and it is applicable for arbitrary values of the external parameters.

Phase diagrams of half-filled 1D and 2D extended Hubbard model within COM

The half-filled extended Hubbard model, in one and two dimensions, is studied by means of the 2-pole approximation within the Composite Operator Method with the aim at improving the possibilities to describe some of the experimental features observed for quasi-1D organic superconductors and Cu-O planes of cuprates. The phase diagrams ($T$-$V$ and $V$-$U$) are analyzed with respect to the paramagnetic metal - paramagnetic insulator - charge ordered phase transitions. The relevant features of the diagrams (rank of the phase transitions, critical points, reentrant behavior) are discussed in detail.

High-order correlation effects in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

The electronic states of the two-dimensional Hubbard model are investigated by means of a 4-pole approximation within the Composite Operator Method. In addition to the conventional Hubbard operators, we consider other two operators which come from the hierarchy of the equations of motion and carry information regarding nearest-neighbor spin and charge configurations. By means of this operatorial basis, we can study the physics related to the energy scale of J=4t^2/U in addition to the one of U. Present results show relevant physical features, well beyond those previously obtained by means of a 2-pole approximation, such as a four-band structure with shadow bands and a quasi-particle peak at the Fermi level. The Fermi level stays pinned to the band flatness located at (pi,0)-point within a wide range of hole-doping (0 <= delta <= 0.15). A comprehensive analysis of double occupancy, internal energy, specific heat and entropy features have been also performed. All reported results are in excellent agreement with the data of numerical simulations.

New perspectives on the Ising model

The Ising model, in presence of an external magnetic field, is isomorphic to a model of localized interacting particles satisfying the Fermi statistics. By using this isomorphism, we construct a general solution of the Ising model which holds for any dimensionality of the system. The Hamiltonian of the model is solved in terms of a complete finite set of eigenoperators and eigenvalues. The Green's function and the correlation functions of the fermionic model are exactly known and are expressed in terms of a finite small number of parameters that have to be self-consistently determined. By using the equation of the motion method, we derive a set of equations which connect different spin correlation functions. The scheme that emerges is that it is possible to describe the Ising model from a unified point of view where all the properties are connected to a small number of local parameters, and where the critical behavior is controlled by the energy scales fixed by the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. By using algebra and symmetry considerations, we calculate the self-consistent parameters for the one-dimensional case. All the properties of the system are calculated and obviously agree with the exact results reported in the literature.

Fermionic systems with charge correlations

In this paper, we show that a system of localized particles, satisfying the Fermi statistics and subject to finite-range interactions, can be exactly solved in any dimension. In fact, in this case it is always possible to find a finite closed set of eigenoperators of the Hamiltonian. Then, the hierarchy of the equations of motion for the Green's functions eventually closes and exact expressions for them are obtained in terms of a finite number of parameters. For example, the method is applied to the two-state model (equivalent to the spin-1/2 Ising model) and to the three-state model (equivalent to the extended Hubbard model in the ionic limit or to the spin-1 Ising model). The models are exactly solved for any dimension d of the lattice. The parameters are self-consistently determined in the case of d=1.

4-pole analysis of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

The electronic states of the two-dimensional Hubbard model are investigated by means of a 4-pole approximation within the Composite Operator Method. In addition to the conventional Hubbard operators, we consider other two operators, which come from the hierarchy of the equations of motion. These operators carry information regarding surrounding spin and charge configurations. By means of this operatorial basis, we can study the physics related to the energy scale J=4t^2/U. Results present, in addition to the main two bands, a quasi-particle peak at the Fermi level, shadow bands and band flatness at (pi, 0) point.

The Hubbard model with intersite interaction within the Composite Operator Method

We study the one- and two- dimensional extended Hubbard model by means of the Composite Operator Method within the 2-pole approximation. The fermionic propagator is computed fully self-consistently as a function of temperature, filling and Coulomb interactions. The behaviors of the chemical potential (global indicator) and of the double occupancy and nearest-neighbor density- density correlator (local indicators) are analyzed in detail as primary sources of information regarding the instability of the paramagnetic (metal and insulator) phase towards charge ordering driven by the intersite Coulomb interaction. Very rich phase diagrams (multiple first and second order phase transitions, critical points, reentrant behavior) have been found and discussed with respect to both metal-insulator and charge ordering transitions: the connections with the experimental findings relative to some manganese compounds are analyzed. Moreover, the possibility of improving the capability of describing cuprates with respect to the simple Hubbard model is discussed through the analysis of the Fermi surface and density of states features. We also report about the specific heat behavior in presence of the intersite interaction and the appearance of crossing points.

The 2-site Hubbard and t-J models

The fermionic and bosonic sectors of the 2-site Hubbard model have been exactly solved by means of the equation of motion and Green's function formalism. The exact solution of the t-J model has been also reported to investigate the low-energy dynamics. We have successfully searched for the exact eigenoperators, and the corresponding eigenenergies, having in mind the possibility to use them as an operatorial basis on the lattice. Many local, single-particle, thermodynamical and response properties have been studied as functions of the external parameters and compared between the two models and with some numerical and exact results. It has been shown that the 2-site Hubbard model already contains the most relevant energy scales of the Hubbard model: the local Coulomb interaction $U$ and the spin-exchange one $J=\frac{4t^2}U$. As a consequence of this, for some relevant properties (kinetic energy, double occupancy, energy, specific heat and entropy) and as regards the metal-insulator transition issue, it has resulted possible to almost exactly mime the behavior of larger systems, sometimes using a higher temperature to get a comparable level spacing. The 2-site models have been also used as toy models to test the efficiency of the Green's function formalism for composite operators. The capability to reproduce the exact solutions, obtained by the exact diagonalization technique, gives a firm ground to the approximate treatments based on this formalism.

Composite operators and algebra constraints: a formalism for highly interacting systems

A formalism for the study of highly interacting electronic systems is presented. The proposed scheme is based on two key concepts: composite operators and algebra constraints. Composite field operators, that naturally appear as a consequence of interaction, are promoted to the rank of basic fields in terms of which a perturbation formulation is set up. The formalism is based on the use of Green's function and equation of motion method. The use of composite operators requires a revisitation of the Green's function formulation, where the representation is determined by means of algebra constraints which are a manifestation at macroscopic level of the algebra rules and symmetry properties obeyed at microscopic level.

Equation of Motion Method for Composite Field Operators

The Green's function formalism in Condensed Matter Physics is reviewed within the equation of motion approach. Composite operators and their Green's functions naturally appear as building blocks of generalized perturbative approaches and require fully self-consistent treatments in order to be properly handled. It is shown how to unambiguously set the representation of the Hilbert space by fixing both the unknown parameters, which appear in the linearized equations of motion and in the spectral weights of non-canonical operators, and the zero-frequency components of Green's functions in a way that algebra and symmetries are preserved. To illustrate this procedure some examples are given: the complete solution of the two-site Hubbard model, the evaluation of spin and charge correlators for a narrow-band Bloch system, the complete solution of the three-site Heisenberg model, and a study of the spin dynamics in the Double-Exchange model.

The 1D Hubbard model within the Composite Operator Method

Although effective for two dimensional (2D) systems, some approximations may fail in describing the properties of one-dimensional (1D) models, which belong to a different universality class. In this paper, we analyze the adequacy of the Composite Operator Method (COM), which provides a good description of many features of 2D strongly correlated systems, in grasping the physics of 1D models. To this purpose, the 1D Hubbard model is studied within the framework of the COM by considering a two-pole approximation and a paramagnetic ground state. The local, thermodynamic and single-particle properties, the correlation functions and susceptibilities are calculated in the case of half filling and arbitrary filling. The results are compared with those obtained by the Bethe Ansatz (BA) as well as by other numerical and analytical techniques. The advantages and limitations of the method are analyzed in detail.

Antiferromagnetism in the 2D Hubbard model: phase transition and local quantities

We present a first study of the antiferromagnetic state in the 2D t-t'-U model at finite temperatures by the composite operator method, providing simultaneously a fully self-consistent treatment of the paramagnetic and the AF phase. Near half-filling the critical value of the Coulomb repulsion as a function of t' and the temperature dependence of the magnetization and of the internal energy per site have been studied.

A Study of the Antiferromagnetic Phase in the Hubbard Model by means of the Composite Operator Method

We have investigated the antiferromagnetic phase of the 2D, the 3D and the extended Hubbard models on a bipartite cubic lattice by means of the Composite Operator Method within a two-pole approximation. This approach yields a fully self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the symmetry properties of both the model and the algebra. The complete phase diagram, as regards the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases, has been drawn. We firstly reported, within a pole approximation, three kinds of transitions at half-filling: Mott-Hubbard, Mott-Heisenberg and Heisenberg. We have also found a metal-insulator transition, driven by doping, within the antiferromagnetic phase. This latter is restricted to a very small region near half filling and has, in contrast to what has been found by similar approaches, a finite critical Coulomb interaction as lower bound at half filling. Finally, it is worth noting that our antiferromagnetic gap has two independent components: one due to the antiferromagnetic correlations and another coming from the Mott-Hubbard mechanism.

Spin magnetic susceptibility in the two-layer Hubbard model

The two-layer Hubbard model is studied by using the composite operator method. Magnetic properties of the model in the normal state are analyzed by studying the uniform static spin magnetic susceptibility as a function of doping and temperature. The relevance of the model to describe the physical behavior of two-layered cuprate high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is discussed.
