Perimeter approximation of convex discs in the hyperbolic plane and on the sphere

Eggleston (1957) proved that in the Euclidean plane the best approximating convex $n$-gon to a convex disc $K$ is always inscribed in $K$ if we measure the distance by perimeter deviation. We prove that the analogue of Eggleston's statement holds in the hyperbolic plane, and we give an example showing that it fails on the sphere.

The $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem for $p>1$ and $q>0$

General $L_p$ dual curvature measures have recently been introduced by Lutwak, Yang and Zhang. These new measures unify several other geometric measures of the Brunn-Minkowski theory and the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory. $L_p$ dual curvature measures arise from $q$th dual inrinsic volumes by means of Alexandrov-type variational formulas. Lutwak, Yang and Zhang formulated the $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem, which concerns the characterization of $L_p$ dual curvature measures. In this paper, we solve the existence part of the $L_{p}$ dual Minkowski problem for $p>1$ and $q>0$, and we also discuss the regularity of the solution.

Variance estimates for random disc-polygons in smooth convex discs

In this paper we prove asymptotic upper bounds on the variance of the number of vertices and missed area of inscribed random disc-polygons in smooth convex discs whose boundary is $C^2_+$. We also consider a circumscribed variant of this probability model in which the convex disc is approximated by the intersection of random circles.

Strengthened volume inequalities for L_p zonoids of even isotropic measures

We strengthen the volume inequalities for L_p zonoids of even isotropic measures and for their duals, which are due to Ball, Barthe and Lutwak, Yang, Zhang. Along the way, we prove a stronger version of the Brascamp-Lieb inequality for a family of functions that can approximate arbitrary well some Gaussians when equality holds. The special case p=\infty yields a stability version of the reverse isoperimetric inequality for centrally symmetric bodies.

The volume of random polytopes circumscribed around a convex body

Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which slides freely in a ball. Let $K^{(n)}$ denote the intersection of $n$ closed half-spaces containing $K$ whose bounding hyperplanes are independent and identically distributed according to a certain prescribed probability distribution. We prove an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the volumes of $K^{(n)}$ and $K$, and an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the volume of $K^{(n)}$. We achieve these results by first proving similar statements for weighted mean width approximations of convex bodies that admit a rolling ball by inscribed random polytopes and then by polarizing these results.

Intrinsic volumes of random polytopes with vertices on the boundary of a convex body

Let $K$ be a convex body in $\R^d$, let $j\in\{1, ..., d-1\}$, and let $\varrho$ be a positive and continuous probability density function with respect to the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the boundary $\partial K$ of $K$. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $\partial K$ according to the probability distribution determined by $\varrho$. For the case when $\partial K$ is a $C^2$ submanifold of $\R^d$ with everywhere positive Gauss curvature, M. Reitzner proved an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the $j$th intrinsic volumes of $K$ and $K_n$, as $n\to\infty$. In this article, we extend this result to the case when the only condition on $K$ is that a ball rolls freely in $K$.

Intrinsic volumes of inscribed random polytopes in smooth convex bodies

Let $K$ be a $d$ dimensional convex body with a twice continuously differentiable boundary and everywhere positive Gauss-Kronecker curvature. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $K$ according to the uniform distribution. Matching lower and upper bounds are obtained for the orders of magnitude of the variances of the $s$-th intrinsic volumes $V_s(K_n)$ of $K_n$ for $s\in\{1, ..., d\}$. Furthermore, strong laws of large numbers are proved for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$. The essential tools are the Economic Cap Covering Theorem of Bárány and Larman, and the Efron-Stein jackknife inequality.

The mean width of random polytopes circumscribed around a convex body

Let K be a d-dimensional convex body, and let $K^{(n)}$ be the intersection of n halfspaces containing $K$ whose bounding hyperplanes are independent and identically distributed. Under suitable distributional assumptions, we prove an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the mean widths of $K^{(n)}$ and K, and another asymptotic formula for the expectation of the number of facets of $K^{(n)}$. These results are achieved by establishing an asymptotic result on weighted volume approximation of $K$ and by "dualizing" it using polarity.
