The origin of excited states of the $\Lambda$ baryon at the SU(3) point from Lattice QCD

In this work we determine the finite-volume lattice QCD spectrum at the flavor symmetric $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ point in the meson-baryon singlet and octet irreducible representations. We construct the appropriate interpolation operators and perform the calculation on ensembles in quite large volume ($L=48$). We find three below-threshold energy levels, with the singlet having lower energy and the two octets being non-degenerate at one sigma, which for these large volumes ($M_{\pi} L\approx 14.5$) strongly suggests a bound state close to that energy at each of the irreducible representations. We confront this finite-volume spectrum with the prediction from UCHPT through the L\"uscher method finding qualitative agreement. Finally we perform a re-fit of UCHPT free parameters to the available (experimental and lattice) data including the energy levels calculated in this work. This allows us to follow the pole trajectories to the physical point, identifying the $\Lambda(1405)$ as a lower octet, and $\Lambda(1380)$ as a singlet bound state in the $\mathrm{SU(3)}$ limit. Furthermore, $\Lambda(1670)$ is identified on a qualitative level as the heavier octet bound state and its relation to three-body final states is discussed.

Nucleon strange electromagnetic form factors using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted-mass fermions at the physical point

We present the strange electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon using lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass clover-improved fermions and quark masses tuned to their physical values. Using four ensembles with lattice spacings of $a=0.080$ fm, $0.068$ fm, $0.057$ fm and $0.049$ fm, and similar physical volume, we obtain the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass. The disconnected strange contributions are computed using high statistics two-point functions combined with stochastic noise mitigation techniques, such as spin-color dilution and hierarchical probing in the estimation of the quark loop. From the momentum dependence of the form factors, we provide the strange electric and magnetic radii, as well as the strange magnetic moment in the continuum limit.

Nucleon strange electromagnetic form factors from $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD

We present the nucleon strange electromagnetic form factors using four lattice QCD ensembles with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass clover-improved fermions and quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The four ensembles have similar physical volume and lattice spacings of $a=0.080$ fm, $0.068$ fm, $0.057$ fm and $0.049$ fm allowing us to take the continuum limit directly at the physical pion mass point. We compute nucleon three-point correlation functions with high statistics, where the disconnected fermion loops are evaluated stochastically with spin-color dilution and hierarchical probing. We find non-zero values for both electric and magnetic form factors. We extract the strange electric and magnetic radii, as well as the strange magnetic moment in the continuum limit by studying the momentum dependence of the form factors. We also compute the charm electromagnetic form factors within the same setup, which we find to be consistent with zero within the statistical precision of our data.

Strangeness of nucleons from $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD

We present the strange electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon using lattice QCD simulations with degenerate light, a strange, and a charm quark in the sea with masses tuned to their physical values. For the first time, the strange electromagnetic form factors are computed at the continuum limit using only ensembles simulated with physical quark masses, eliminating the need for chiral extrapolations and their associated systematic uncertainty. We obtain the momentum transfer dependence of the form factors using the $z$-expansion and provide the strange electric and magnetic radii, as well as the strange magnetic moment. When combining our statistical errors and systematic uncertainties stemming from the momentum transfer dependence fit, our errors are an order of magnitude smaller than those associated with experimental determinations of the strange electromagnetic form factor.

An update on the HVP contribution to $g_{\mu}{-}2$ in isoQCD from ETMC

We present an update on the determination of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment in isospin-symmetric QCD by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration. The calculation is based on five $N_f = 2+1+1$ gauge ensembles generated with Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks at maximal-twist and near-physical pion masses, spanning four lattice spacings and two volumes. For the dominant quark-connected contributions, we employ two distinct valence-quark regularisations and present results for both the isovector and isoscalar components.

Dirac mode localization in QCD near the crossover temperature

We study the localization properties of the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes in QCD near the crossover temperature, using stout-smeared staggered fermions and Symanzik-improved gauge action on the lattice. On $N_{\mathrm{t}}=8$ lattices we find that localized low modes, absent at low temperature, appear at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{loc}}$ in the range $150\,\mathrm{MeV}\le T_{\mathrm{loc}}\le 160\,\mathrm{MeV}$, well within the chiral crossover range as determined from the chiral condensate and from the light-quark susceptibility. Since with our choice of lattice action neither the chiral transition region nor the renormalized mobility edges change significantly above $N_{\mathrm{t}}=8$, our conclusion that $T_{\mathrm{loc}}$ is in the chiral crossover region is expected to remain valid in the continuum limit.

Universal parameters of the $\Lambda(1380)$, the $\Lambda(1405)$ and their isospin partners from a combined analysis of Lattice QCD and experimental results

We perform a global analysis of lattice and experimental data on negative-strangeness meson-baryon scattering using a large set of variations of the theoretical framework based on the Chiral Unitary Approach. For the former, the L\"uscher formalism is utilized taking into account all pertinent coupled-channel effects. Through this, systematic uncertainties related to data scarcity, potential ambiguities, and possible framework dependence are quantified for the first time. The implementation of information criteria and other statistical tools is discussed. As a final result we provide pole positions for isoscalar resonances at the physical and lattice points including statistical and systematic uncertainties. Predictions for the isovector states are also provided showing large uncertainties.

$\eta$, $\eta^\prime$ mesons from lattice QCD in fully physical conditions

We determine masses and mixing parameters of the $\eta$ and $M_{\eta^\prime}$ meson in lattice QCD. The calculations are carried out on a set of 13 ETMC gauge ensembles with $N_f=2+1+1$ (maximally) twisted-mass Clover-improved quarks. These ensemble cover four values of the lattice spacing $a=0.057\mathrm{fm},...,0.092\mathrm{fm}$ and pion masses from $140\mathrm{MeV}$ to $360\mathrm{MeV}$, including three ensembles at physical quark masses and six ensembles with $M_\pi<200\mathrm{MeV}$. The strange-quark contribution is treated in a mixed-action approach using Osterwalder-Seiler fermions to avoid complications due to flavor mixing in the heavy quark sector and to enable the use of the one-end trick in the computation of strange quark-disconnected diagrams. With the strange-quark mass tuned to its physical value and several ensembles having close-to-physical light-quark mass, uncertainties related to the chiral extrapolations are reduced significantly compared to earlier studies. Physical results are computed with fully controlled systematics from a combined chiral, continuum and infinite-volume extrapolation, and a full error budget is obtained from model averages over of various fit ans\"atze and data cuts. Our results for the masses are given by $M_\eta=551(16)\mathrm{MeV}$ and $M_{\eta^\prime}=972(20)\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively, where statistical and systematic errors have been added in quadrature. For the mixing angle and decay-constant parameters the Feldmann-Kroll-Stech scheme is employed to compute them from pseudoscalar matrix elements in the quark-flavor basis. For the mixing angle we obtain $\phi^\mathrm{phys}=39.3(2.0)^\circ$ and our results for the decay-constant parameters are given by $f_l^\mathrm{phys}=138.6(4.4)\mathrm{MeV}$ and $f_s^\mathrm{phys}=170.7(3.3)\mathrm{MeV}$.

Smeared $R$-ratio in isospin symmetric QCD with Low Mode Averaging

Low Mode Average (LMA) is a technique to improve the quality of the signal-to-noise ratio in the long time separation of Euclidean correlation functions. We report on its beneficial impact in computing the vector-vector light connected two-point correlation functions and derived physical quantities in the mixed action lattice setup adopted by ETM collaboration. We focus on preliminary results of the computation within isospin symmetric QCD (isoQCD) of the $R$-ratio smeared with Gaussian kernels of widths down to $\sigma\sim250$ MeV, which is enough to appreciate the $\rho$ resonance around 770 MeV, using the Hansen-Lupo-Tantatlo (HLT) spectral-density reconstruction method.

Investigation of $\pi N$ contributions to nucleon matrix elements

We investigate an improved method to extract nucleon matrix elements from lattice 3-point functions using a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) with nucleon and pion-nucleon interpolating fields. Our method avoids the computation of the costly three-point functions that have pion-nucleon interpolators at both source and sink. We demonstrate that excited state contamination from $N\pi$ is minimized in nucleon matrix elements of the scalar, vector, pseudoscalar, axial, and tensor currents and discuss our results based on a physical-point ensemble with a pion mass value of 131 MeV. We find that the GEVP is most significant for the isovector pseudoscalar and axial currents.

Investigation of pion-nucleon contributions to nucleon matrix elements

We investigate contributions of excited states to nucleon matrix elements computed in lattice QCD by employing, in addition to the standard nucleon interpolating operator, pion-nucleon ($\pi$-$N$) operators. We solve a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) to obtain an optimal interpolating operator that minimizes overlap with the $\pi$-$N$ states. We derive a variant of the standard application of the GEVP method, which allows for constructing 3-point correlation functions using the optimized interpolating operator without requiring the computationally demanding combination that includes $\pi$-$N$ operators in both sink and source. We extract nucleon matrix elements using two twisted mass fermion ensembles, one ensemble generated using pion mass of 346 MeV and one ensemble tuned to reproduce the physical value of the pion mass. Especially, we determine the isoscalar and isovector scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial, and tensor matrix elements. We include results obtained using a range of kinematic setups, including momentum in the sink. Our results using this variational approach are compared with previous results obtained using the same ensembles and multi-state fits without GEVP improvement. We find that for the physical mass point ensemble, the improvement, in terms of suppression of excited states using this method, is most significant for the case of the matrix elements of the isovector axial and pseudoscalar currents.

Investigation of two-particle contributions to nucleon matrix elements

We investigate contributions of excited states to nucleon matrix elements by studying the two- and three-point functions using nucleon and pion-nucleon interpolating fields. This study is carried out using twisted mass fermion ensembles with pion masses 346 MeV and 131 MeV. We compare the results obtained using these two ensembles and show preliminary results for nucleon charges.

The $η\rightarrow γ^* γ^*$ transition form factor and the hadronic light-by-light $η$-pole contribution to the muon $g-2$ from lattice QCD

We calculate the double-virtual $η\rightarrow γ^* γ^*$ transition form factor $\mathcal{F}_{η\to γ^* γ^*}(q_1^2,q_2^2)$ from first principles using a lattice QCD simulation with $N_f=2+1+1$ quark flavors at the physical pion mass and at one lattice spacing and volume. The kinematic range covered by our calculation is complementary to the one accessible from experiment and is relevant for the $η$-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ= (g-2)/2$ of the muon. From the form factor calculation we extract the partial decay width $Γ(η\rightarrow γγ) = 323(85)_\text{stat}(22)_\text{syst}$ eV and the slope parameter $b_η=1.19(36)_\text{stat}(16)_\text{syst}$ GeV${}^{-2}$. For the $η$-pole contribution to $a_μ$ we obtain $a_μ^{η-\text{pole}} = 13.2(5.2)_\text{stat}(1.3)_\text{syst} \cdot 10^{-11}$.

Elastic Nucleon-Pion scattering amplitudes in the $\Delta$ channel at physical pion mass from Lattice QCD

We present an investigation of pion-nucleon elastic scattering in the $I\,(J^P) = \frac{3}{2}\,(\frac{3}{2}^+)$ channel using lattice QCD with degenerate up and down, strange and charm quarks with masses tuned to their physical values. We use an ensemble of twisted mass fermions with box size $L = 5.1\,\mathrm{fm}$ and lattice spacing $a = 0.08\,\mathrm{fm}$ and we consider the $\pi N$ system in rest and moving frames up to total momentum $\vec{P}^2 = 3\,(2\pi/L)^2$ = 0.17 GeV$^2$. We take into account the finite volume symmetries and $S$- and $P$-wave mixing, and use the L\"uscher formalism to simultaneously constrain the $J = 1/2,\,\ell = 0$ and $J = 3/2,\,\ell = 1$ scattering amplitudes. We estimate the $\Delta$ resonance pole in the $P$-wave channel as well as the $S$-wave isospin-3/2 scattering length.

Pseudoscalar-pole contributions to the muon $g-2$ at the physical point

Pseudoscalar-pole diagrams are an important component of estimates of the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) contribution to the muon $g-2$. We report on our computation of the transition form factors $\mathcal{F}_{P \rightarrow γ^* γ^*}$ for the neutral pseudoscalar mesons $P=π^0$ and $η$. The calculation is performed using twisted-mass lattice QCD with physical quark masses. On the lattice, we have access to a broad range of (space-like) photon four-momenta and therefore produce form factor data complementary to the experimentally accessible single-virtual direction, which directly leads to an estimate of the pion- and $η$-pole components of the muon $g-2$. For the pion, our result for the $g-2$ contribution in the continuum is comparable with previous lattice and data-driven determinations, with combined relative uncertainties below $10\%$. For the $η$ meson, we report on a preliminary determination from a single lattice spacing.

Twisted mass ensemble generation on GPU machines

We present how we ported the Hybrid Monte Carlo implementation in the tmLQCD software suite to GPUs through offloading its most expensive parts to the QUDA library. We discuss our motivations and some of the technical challenges that we encountered as we added the required functionality to both tmLQCD and QUDA. We further present some performance details, focussing in particular on the usage of QUDA's multigrid solver for poorly conditioned light quark monomials as well as the multi-shift solver for the non-degenerate strange and charm sector in $N_f=2+1+1$ simulations using twisted mass clover fermions, comparing the efficiency of state-of-the-art simulations on CPU and GPU machines. We also take a look at the performance-portability question through preliminary tests of our HMC on a machine based on AMD's MI250 GPU, finding good performance after a very minor additional porting effort. Finally, we conclude that we should be able to achieve GPU utilisation factors acceptable for the current generation of (pre-)exascale supercomputers with subtantial efficiency improvements and real time speedups compared to just running on CPUs. At the same time, we find that future challenges will require different approaches and, most importantly, a very significant investment of personnel for software development.

Pion-pole contribution to HLbL from twisted mass lattice QCD at the physical point

We report on our computation of the pion transition form factor ${\cal F}_{P\rightarrow γ^*γ^*}$ from twisted mass lattice QCD in order to determine the numerically dominant light pseudoscalar pole contribution in the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ=(g-2)_μ$. The pion transition form factor is computed directly at the physical point. We present first results for our estimate of the pion-pole contribution with kinematic setup for the pion at rest.

Elastic $π-N$ scattering in the $I=3/2$ channel

We present our study of $π-N$ scattering in the iso-spin $I=3/2$ channel for the first time at the physical point. The calculation is performed using $N_f=2+1+1$ flavors of twisted mass fermions with clover improvement at physical pion mass. We compute energy levels for the rest frame and moving frames up to a total momentum of $|\vec{P}|=\sqrt{3} \,\frac{2π}{L}$, and for all the relevant ireducible representations of the lattice symmetry groups. We perform a phase-shift analysis including $s\,(\ell=0)$ and $p\,(\ell=1)$ wave phase shifts assuming a Breit-Wigner form and determine the parameters of the $Δ$ resonance.
