Anomalous law of cooling

We analyze the temperature relaxation phenomena of systems in contact with a thermal reservoir that undergo a non-Markovian diffusion process. From a generalized Langevin equation, we show that the temperature is governed by a law of cooling of the Newton's law type in which the relaxation time depends on the velocity autocorrelation and is then characterized by the memory function. The analysis of the temperature decay reveals the existence of an anomalous cooling in which the temperature may oscillate. Despite this anomalous behavior, we show that the variation of entropy remains always positive in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics.

An analytical formulation for roughness based on celular automata

We present a method to derive the analytical expression of the roughness of a fractal surface whose dynamics is ruled by cellular automata. Starting from the automata, we write down the the time derivative of the height's average and variance. By assuming the equiprobability of the surface configurations and taking the limit of large substrates we find the roughness as a function of time. As expected, the function behaves as $t^β$ when $t\ll t_\times$ and saturate at $w_s$ when $t\gg t_\times$. We apply the methodology to describe the etching model \citep{Bernardo}, however, the value of $β$ we obtained are not the one predicted by the KPZ equation and observed in numerical experiments. That divergence may be due to the equiprobability assumption. We redefine the roughness with an exponent that compensate the nonuniform probability generated by the celular automata, resulting in an expression that perfectly matches the experimental results.

Complexity perspectives: an anomalous diffusion approach

The science of complexity is far from being fully understood and even its foundations are not well established. On the other hand, during the last decade, the random motion of particles or waves - the so-called diffusion - has been known better. In this paper, we discuss how simple ideas of diffusion can be used to deal with the description of most complex structure.

Khinchin theorem and anomalous diffusion

A recent paper [M. H. Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 190601 (2007)] has called attention to the fact that irreversibility is a broader concept than ergodicity, and that therefore the Khinchin theorem [A. I. Khinchin, Mathematical Foundations of Statistical Mechanics (Dover, New York) 1949] may fail in some systems. In this Letter we show that for all ranges of normal and anomalous diffusion described by a Generalized Langevin Equation the Khinchin theorem holds.

Anomalous Diffusion

Recent investigations call attention to the dynamics of anomalous diffusion and its connection with basic principles of statistical mechanics. We present here a short review of those ideas and their implications.

Synchronization in the presence of memory

We study the effect of memory on synchronization of identical chaotic systems driven by common external noises. Our examples show that while in general synchronization transition becomes more difficult to meet when memory range increases, for intermediate ranges the synchronization tendency of systems can be enhanced. Generally the synchronization transition is found to depend on the memory range and the ratio of noise strength to memory amplitude, which indicates on a possibility of optimizing synchronization by memory. We also point out on a close link between dynamics with memory and noise, and recently discovered synchronizing properties of networks with delayed interactions.

Intermediate dynamics between Newton and Langevin

A dynamics between Newton and Langevin formalisms is elucidated within the framework of the generalized Langevin equation. For thermal noise yielding a vanishing zero-frequency friction the corresponding non-Markovian Brownian dynamics exhibits anomalous behavior which is characterized by ballistic diffusion and accelerated transport. We also investigate the role of a possible initial correlation between the system degrees of freedom and the heat-bath degrees of freedom for the asymptotic long-time behavior of the system dynamics. As two test beds we investigate (i) the anomalous energy relaxation of free non-Markovian Brownian motion that is driven by a harmonic velocity noise and (ii) the phenomenon of a net directed acceleration in noise-induced transport of an inertial rocking Brownian motor.

Mixing, ergodicity and slow relaxation phenomena

Investigations on diffusion in systems with memory [I.V.L. Costa, R. Morgado, M.V.B.T. Lima, F.A. Oliveira, Europhys. Lett. 63 (2003) 173] have established a hierarchical connection between mixing, ergodicity, and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT). This hierarchy means that ergodicity is a necessary condition for the validity of the FDT, and mixing is a necessary condition for ergodicity. In this work, we compare those results with recent investigations using the Lee recurrence relations method [M.H. Lee, Phys. Rev. B 26 (1982) 2547; M.H. Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 250601; M.H. Lee, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006) 4651]. Lee shows that ergodicity is violated in the dynamics of the electron gas [M.H. Lee, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006) 4651]. This reinforces both works and implies that the results of [I.V.L. Costa, R. Morgado, M.V.B.T. Lima, F.A. Oliveira, Europhys. Lett. 63 (2003) 173] are more general than the framework in which they were obtained. Some applications to slow relaxation phenomena are discussed.

Flow in Rough Self-Affine Fractures Joints

We investigate viscous and non-viscous flow in two-dimensional self-affine fracture joints through direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations. As a novel hydrodynamic feature of this flow system, we find that the effective permeability at higher Reynolds number to cubic order, falls into two regimes as a function of the Hurst exponent $h$ characterizing the fracture joints. For $h>1/2$, we find a weak dependency whereas for $h<1/2$, the dependency is strong. A similar behavior is found for the higher order coefficients. We also study the velocity fluctuations in space of a passive scalar. These are strongly correlated on smaller length scales, but decorrelates on larger scales. Moreover, the fluctuations on larger scale are insensitive to the value of the Reynolds number.

Non-exponential relaxation for anomalous diffusion

We study the relaxation process in normal and anomalous diffusion regimes for systems described by a generalized Langevin equation (GLE). We demonstrate the existence of a very general correlation function which describes the relaxation phenomena. Such function is even; therefore, it cannot be an exponential or a stretched exponential. However, for a proper choice of the parameters, those functions can be reproduced within certain intervals with good precision. We also show the passage from the non-Markovian to the Markovian behaviour in the normal diffusion regime. For times longer than the relaxation time, the correlation function for anomalous diffusion becomes a power law for broad-band noise.

Nonergodic Brownian Dynamics and the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem

Nonergodic Brownian motion is elucidated within the framework of the generalized Langevin equation. For thermal noise yielding either a vanishing or a divergent zero-frequency friction strength, the non-Markovian Browninan dynamics exhibits a riveting, anomalous diffusion behavior being characterized by a ballistic or possibly also a localized dynamics. As a consequence, such tailored thermal noise may cause a net acceleration of directed transport in a rocking Brownian motor. Two notable conditions for the thermal noise are identified in order to guarantee the fluctuation-dissipation theorem of first kind.

Spatio-temporal conjecture for diffusion

We present here a conjecture about the equivalence between the noise density of states of a system governed by a generalized Langevin equation and the fluctuation in the energy density of states in a Hamiltonian system. We present evidence of this for a disordered Heisenberg system.

Superdiffusive Conduction: AC Conductivity with Correlated Noise

We present evidence of the existence of a superdiffusive regime in systems with correlated disorder for which localization is suppressed. An expression for anomalous electrical conductivity at low frequencies is found by using a generalized Langevin equation whose memory function accounts for the interactions between the carriers. New mechanisms inducing a superdiffusive conductivity are discussed and experimental possibilities for observing that phenomenon in nanotubes and superlattices are presented.

Violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for fast superdiffusion

We study anomalous diffusion for one-dimensional systems described by a generalized Langevin equation. We show that superdiffusion can be classified in normal superdiffusion and fast superdiffusion. For fast superdiffusion, we prove that the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem does not hold, which induces an effective temperature in the system. This effective temperature is a signature of metastability found in many complex system such as Spin-Glass and granular material.

Breakdown of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem for fast superdiffusion

We study anomalous diffusion for one-dimensional systems described by a generalized Langevin equation. We show that superdiffusion can be classified in slow superdiffusion and fast superdiffusion. For fast superdiffusion we prove that the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem does not hold. We show as well that the asymptotic behavior of the response function is a stretched exponential for anomalous diffusion and an exponential only for normal diffusion.

Normal Stress Distribution of Rough Surfaces in Contact

We study numerically the stress distribution on the interface between two thick elastic media bounded by interfaces that include spatially correlated asperities. The interface roughness is described using the self-affine topography that is observed over a very wide range of scales from fractures to faults. We analyse the correlation properties of the normal stress distribution when the rough surfaces have been brought into full contact. The self affinity of the rough surfaces is described by a Hurst exponent H. We find that the normal stress field is also self affine, but with a Hurst exponent H-1. Fluctations of the normal stress are shown to be important, especially at local scales with anti-persistent correlations.
