Kernels of Fell bundles tensor products

We prove that if A and B are Fell bundles over the locally compact groups G and H respectively, then the minimal (maximal) tensor product of the C*-algebra of kernels of A with the C*-algebra of kernels of B agrees with the C*-algebra of kernels of the minimal (respectively: maximal) tensor product of A and B.

Conditional expectations on Fell bundles

We show that the existence of a continuous conditional expectation from a Fell bundle to a Fell subbundle implies that the full cross-sectional C*-algebra of the subbundle is contained in the full cross-sectional C*-algebra of the bundle, and moreover there exists a conditional expectation from the latter algebra to the former. A similar fact holds for the reduced cross-sectional C*-algebras. Besides, the subbundle is amenable whenever so is the bundle.

Decomposable partial actions

We define the decomposition property for partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras. Decomposable partial systems appear naturally in practice, and many commonly occurring partial actions can be decomposed into partial actions with the decomposition property. For instance, any partial action of a finite group is an iterated extension of decomposable systems. Partial actions with the decomposition property are always globalizable and amenable, regardless of the acting group, and their globalization can be explicitly described in terms of certain global sub-systems. A direct computation of their crossed products is also carried out. We show that partial actions with the decomposition property behave in many ways like global actions of finite groups (even when the acting group is infinite), which makes their study particularly accessible. For example, there exists a canonical faithful conditional expectation onto the fixed point algebra, which is moreover a corner in the crossed product in a natural way. (Both of these facts are in general false for partial actions of finite groups.) As an application, we show that freeness of a topological partial action with the decomposition property is equivalent to its fixed point algebra being Morita equivalent to its crossed product. We also show by example that this fails for general partial actions of finite groups.

Partial C*-dynamics and Rokhlin dimension

We develop the notion of Rokhlin dimension for partial actions of finite groups, extending the well-established theory for global systems. The partial setting exhibits phenomena that cannot be expected for global actions, usually stemming from the fact that virtually all averaging arguments for finite group actions completely break down for partial systems. For example, fixed point algebra and crossed product are not in general Morita equivalent, and there is in general no local approximation of the crossed product $A\rtimes G$ by matrices over $A$. By using decomposition arguments for partial actions of finite groups, we show that a number of structural properties are preserved by formation of crossed products, including finite stable rank, finite nuclear dimension, and absorption of a strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebra. For partial actions with the Rokhlin property, being an AF-algebra is also preserved. Some of our results are new even in the global case. We also study the Rokhlin dimension of globalizable actions: while in general it differs from the Rokhlin dimension of its globalization, we show that they agree if the coefficient algebra is unital. For topological partial actions on spaces of finite covering dimension, we show that finiteness of the Rokhlin dimension is equivalent to freeness, thus providing a large class of examples to which our theory applies.

Amenability and approximation properties for partial actions and Fell bundles

Building on previous papers by Anantharaman-Delaroche (AD) we introduce and study the notion of AD-amenability for partial actions and Fell bundles over discrete groups. We prove that the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle is nuclear if and only if the underlying unit fibre is nuclear and the Fell bundle is AD-amenable. If a partial action is globalisable, then it is AD-amenable if and only if its globalisation is AD-amenable. Moreover, we prove that AD-amenability is preserved by (weak) equivalence of Fell bundles and, using a very recent idea of Ozawa and Suzuki, we show that AD-amenabity is equivalent to an approximation property introduced by Exel.

Enveloping actions and Takai duality for partial actions

We show that any continuous partial action on a topological space has a unique enveloping action, i.e. it is the restriction of a global action. In the case of C^*-algebras we prove that any partial action has an enveloping action up to Morita equivalence. The study of enveloping actions up to Morita equivalence reveals the form that Takai duality takes for partial actions.

Morita enveloping Fell bundles

We introduce notions of weak and strong equivalence for non-saturated Fell bundles over locally compact groups and show that every Fell bundle is strongly (resp. weakly) equivalent to a semidirect product Fell bundle for a partial (resp. global) action. Equivalences preserve cross-sectional $C^*-$algebras and amenability. We use this to show that previous results on crossed products and amenability of group actions carry over to Fell bundles.

Equivalence of Fell bundles over groups

We give a notion of equivalence for Fell bundles over groups, not necessarily saturated nor separable, and show that equivalent Fell bundles have Morita-Rieffel equivalent cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras. Our notion is originated in the context of partial actions and their enveloping actions. The equivalence between two Fell bundles is implemented by a bundle of Hilbert bimodules with some extra structure. Suitable cross-sectional spaces of such a bundle turn out to be imprimitivity bimodules for the cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras of the involved Fell bundles. We show that amenability is preserved under this equivalence and, by means of a convenient notion of internal tensor product between Fell bundles, we show that equivalence of Fell bundles is an equivalence relation.

Applications of ternary rings to $C^*$-algebras

We show that there is a functor from the category of positive admissible ternary rings to the category of $*$-algebras, which induces an isomorphism of partially ordered sets between the families of $C^*$-norms on the ternary ring and its corresponding $*$-algebra. We apply this functor to obtain Morita-Rieffel equivalence results between cross sectional $C^*$-algebras of Fell bundles, and to extend the theory of tensor products of $C^*$-algebras to the larger category of full Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We prove that, like in the case of $C^*$-algebras, there exist maximal and minimal tensor products. As applications we give simple proofs of the invariance of nuclearity and exactness under Morita-Rieffel equivalence of $C^*$-algebras.

Ideals in Cross Sectional C*-algebras of Fell Bundles

With each Fell bundle over a discrete group G we associate a partial action of G on the spectrum of the unit fiber. We discuss the ideal structure of the corresponding full and reduced cross-sectional C*-algebras in terms of the dynamics of this partial action.

Dilations of interaction groups that extend actions of Ore semigroups

We show that every interaction group extending an action of an Ore semigroup by injective unital endomorphisms of a C*-algebra, admits a dilation to an action of the corresponding enveloping group on another unital C*-algebra, of which the former is a C*-subalgebra: the interaction group is obtained by composing the action with a conditional expectation. The dilation is essentially unique if a certain natural condition of minimality is imposed. If the action is induced by covering maps on the spectrum, then the expectation is faithful.

On the amenability of partial and enveloping actions

We prove that a partial action is amenable if and only if so is its Morita enveloping action. As applications we prove that any partial representation of a discrete group is positive definite, and we extend a result of Zeller-Meier concerning the amenability of discrete groups and the existence of invariant states to partial actions.

Tensor Products of Fell Bundles over Groups

We extend the theory of tensor products of C*-algebras to the larger category of Fell bundles over locally compact groups. We prove that, like in the case of C*-algebras, there exist maximal and minimal tensor products. Given two Fell bundles, we compare the tensor products of their cross-sectional algebras with the cross-sectional algebras of their tensor products. As applications we prove that, under certain conditions, the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle is nuclear or exact whenever so is its fiber over the unit element of the group.
