Non-interacting central site model: localization and logarithmic entanglement growth

We investigate the stationary and dynamical behavior of an Anderson localized chain coupled to a single central bound state. The coupling to the central site partially dilutes the Anderson localized peak towards the nearly resonant sites. In particular, the number of resonantly coupled sites remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. This is further supported by a multifractal analysis of eigenstates that shows the frozen spectrum of fractal dimension, which is characteristic for localized phases in models with power-law hopping. Although the well-known Fano-resonance problem is seemingly similar to our system, it fails to describe it because of the absence of level repulsion within the energy spectrum. For weak coupling strengths to the central site, we identify a regime with a logarithmic in time transport of particles and information.

Signatures of a 4$π$-periodic supercurrent in the voltage response of capacitively shunted topological Josephson junctions

We investigate theoretical aspects of the detection of Majorana bound states in Josephson junctions using the semiclassical RCSJ model of junction dynamics. The influence of a 4$π$-periodic supercurrent contribution can be detected through its effect on the width of the Shapiro steps and the Fourier spectrum of the voltage signal. We explain how the inclusion of a capacitance term results in a strong quenching of the odd steps when the junction is underdamped, and hence may be used to effectively detect Majorana bound states. Furthermore, in presence of capacitance the first and third steps are quenched to a different degree, as observed experimentally. We examine the emission spectrum of phase-locked solutions, showing that the presence of period-doubling may difficult the measurement of the 4$π$-periodic contribution from the Fourier spectrum. Finally, we study the voltage response in the quasiperiodic regime and indicate how the Fourier spectra and the first-return maps in this regime reflect the change of periodicity in the supercurrent.

Zero-energy pinning from interactions in Majorana nanowires

Majorana zero modes at the boundaries of topological superconductors are charge-neutral, an equal superposition of electrons and holes. This ideal situation is, however, hard to achieve in physical implementations, such as proximitised semiconducting nanowires of realistic length. In such systems Majorana overlaps are unavoidable and lead to their hybridisation into charged Bogoliubov quasiparticles of finite energy which, unlike true zero modes, are affected by electronic interactions. We here demonstrate that these interactions, particularly with bound charges in the dielectric surroundings, drastically change the non-interacting paradigm. Remarkably, interactions may completely suppress Majorana hybridisation around parity crossings, where the total charge in the nanowire changes. This effect, dubbed zero-energy pinning, stabilises Majoranas back to zero energy and charge, and leads to electronically incompressible parameter regions wherein Majoranas remain insensitive to local perturbations, despite their overlap.

Josephson radiation from gapless Andreev bound states in HgTe-based topological junctions

Frequency analysis of the rf emission of oscillating Josephson supercurrent is a powerful passive way of probing properties of topological Josephson junctions. In particular, measurements of the Josephson emission enables to detect the expected presence of topological gapless Andreev bound states that give rise to emission at half the Josephson frequency $f_J$, rather than conventional emission at $f_J$. Here we report direct measurement of rf emission spectra on Josephson junctions made of HgTe-based gate-tunable topological weak links. The emission spectra exhibit a clear signal at half the Josephson frequency $f_{\rm J}/2$. The linewidths of emission lines indicate a coherence time of $0.3-\SI{4}{ns}$ for the $f_{\rm J}/2$ line, much shorter than for the $f_{\rm J}$ line ($3-\SI{4}{ns}$). These observations strongly point towards the presence of topological gapless Andreev bound states, and pave the way for a future HgTe-based platform for topological quantum computation.

Quantum interference in a Cooper pair splitter: The three sites model

New generation of Cooper pair splitters defined on hybrid nanostructures are devices with high tunable coupling parameters. Transport measurements through these devices revealed clear signatures of interference effects and motivated us to introduce a new model, called the 3-sites model. These devices provide an ideal playground to tune the Cooper pair splitting (CPS) efficency on demand, and displays a rich variety of physical phenomena. In the present work we analyze theoretically the conductance of the 3-sites model in the linear and non-linear regimes and characterize the most representative features that arise by the interplay of the different model parameters. In the linear regime we find that the local processes typically exhibit Fano-shape resonances, while the CPS contribution exhibits Lorentzian-shapes. Remarkably, we find that under certain conditions, the transport is blocked by the presence of a dark state. In the non-linear regime we established a hierarchy of the model parameters to obtain the conditions for optimal efficency.

Dynamical detection of Majorana fermions in current-biased nanowires

We analyze the current-biased Shapiro experiment in a Josephson junction formed by two one-dimensional nanowires featuring Majorana fermions. Ideally, these junctions are predicted to have an unconventional $4π$-periodic Josephson effect and thus only Shapiro steps at even multiples of the driving frequency. Taking additionally into account overlap between the Majorana fermions, due to the finite length of the wire, renders the Josephson junction conventional for any dc-experiments. We show that probing the current-phase relation in a current biased setup dynamically decouples the Majorana fermions. We find that besides the even integer Shapiro steps there are additional steps at odd and fractional values. However, different from the voltage biased case, the even steps dominate for a wide range of parameters even in the case of multiple modes thus giving a clear experimental signature of the presence of Majorana fermions.

Phonon-mediated decoherence in triple quantum dot interferometers

We investigate decoherence in a triple quantum dot in ring configuration in which one dot is coupled to a damped phonon mode, while the other two dots are connected to source and drain, respectively. In the absence of decoherence, single electron transport may get blocked by an electron falling into a superposition decoupled from the drain and known as dark state. Phonon-mediated decoherence affects this superposition and leads to a finite current. We study the current and its shot noise numerically within a master equation approach for the electrons and the dissipative phonon mode. A polaron transformation allows us to obtain a reduced equation for only the dot electrons which provides analytical results in agreement with numerical ones.

Electron bunching in triple quantum dot interferometers

We study electron transport through a triple quantum dot in ring configuration at finite bias. In particular, we analyze the influence of a gate voltage that detunes one of the dots, such that one branch of the interferometer becomes off-resonant. It turns out that then interference effects fade away, i.e., the current becomes independent of a penetrating flux and the detuning. The noise properties which are characterized by the full-counting statistics, however, are governed by bunching effects that may be tuned by the gate voltage. Analytical results for limiting cases support this picture. A possible application is the construction of current sources with widely tunable shot noise properties.

Determining the electronic triplet-singlet transition probability in double quantum dots: Analogy with the double slit experiment

We apply an elementary measurement scheme to calculate the electronic triplet-singlet transition mediated by hyperfine interaction in a double quantum dot. We show how the local character of the hyperfine interaction and the nuclear back-action process (flip-flop) are crucial to cancel destructive interferences of the triplet-singlet transition probability. It is precisely this cancellation which differentiates the hyperfine interaction from an anisotropic magnetic field which mixes the triplet and the singlet eigenstates.
