Dirac Matrices for Chern-Simons Gravity

A genuine gauge theory for the Poincaré, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter algebras can be constructed in (2n-1)-dimensional spacetime by means of the Chern-Simons form, yielding a gravitational theory that differs from General Relativity but shares many of its properties, such as second order field equations for the metric. The particular form of the Lagrangian is determined by a rank n, symmetric tensor invariant under the relevant algebra. In practice, the calculation of this invariant tensor can be reduced to the computation of the trace of the symmetrized product of n Dirac Gamma matrices Γ_{ab} in 2n-dimensional spacetime. While straightforward in principle, this calculation can become extremely cumbersome in practice. For large enough n, existing computer algebra packages take an inordinate long time to produce the answer or plainly fail having used up all available memory. In this talk we show that the general formula for the trace of the symmetrized product of 2n Gamma matrices Γ_{ab} can be written as a certain sum over the integer partitions s of n, with every term being multiplied by a numerical coefficient α_{s}. We then give a general algorithm that computes the α-coefficients as the solution of a linear system of equations generated by evaluating the general formula for different sets of tensors B^{ab} with random numerical entries. A recurrence relation between different coefficients is shown to hold and is used in a second, "minimal" algorithm to greatly speed up the computations. Runtime of the minimal algorithm stays below 1 min on a typical desktop computer for up to n=25, which easily covers all foreseeable applications of the trace formula.

On eleven-dimensional Supergravity and Chern-Simons theory

We probe in some depth into the structure of eleven-dimensional, osp(32|1)-based Chern-Simons supergravity, as put forward by Troncoso and Zanelli (TZ) in 1997. We find that the TZ Lagrangian may be cast as a polynomial in 1/l, where l is a length, and compute explicitly the first three dominant terms. The term proportional to 1/l^9 turns out to be essentially the Lagrangian of the standard 1978 supergravity theory of Cremmer, Julia and Scherk, thus establishing a previously unknown relation between the two theories. The computation is nontrivial because, when written in a sufficiently explicit way, the TZ Lagrangian has roughly one thousand non-explicitly Lorentz-covariant terms. Specially designed algebraic techniques are used to accomplish the results.

Standard General Relativity from Chern-Simons Gravity

Chern-Simons models for gravity are interesting because they provide with a truly gauge-invariant action principle in the fiber-bundle sense. So far, their main drawback has largely been the perceived remoteness from standard General Relativity, based on the presence of higher powers of the curvature in the Lagrangian (except, remarkably, for three-dimensional spacetime). Here we report on a simple model that suggests a mechanism by which standard General Relativity in five-dimensional spacetime may indeed emerge at a special critical point in the space of couplings, where additional degrees of freedom and corresponding "anomalous" Gauss-Bonnet constraints drop out from the Chern-Simons action. To achieve this result, both the Lie algebra g and the symmetric g-invariant tensor that define the Chern-Simons Lagrangian are constructed by means of the Lie algebra S-expansion method with a suitable finite abelian semigroup S. The results are generalized to arbitrary odd dimensions, and the possible extension to the case of eleven-dimensional supergravity is briefly discussed.

Dual Formulation of the Lie Algebra S-expansion Procedure

The expansion of a Lie algebra entails finding a new, bigger algebra G, through a series of well-defined steps, from an original Lie algebra g. One incarnation of the method, the so-called S-expansion, involves the use of a finite abelian semigroup S to accomplish this task. In this paper we put forward a dual formulation of the S-expansion method which is based on the dual picture of a Lie algebra given by the Maurer-Cartan forms. The dual version of the method is useful in finding a generalization to the case of a gauge free differential algebra, which in turn is relevant for physical applications in, e.g., Supergravity. It also sheds new light on the puzzling relation between two Chern-Simons Lagrangians for gravity in 2+1 dimensions, namely the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian and the one for the so-called "exotic gravity".

Eleven-Dimensional Gauge Theory for the M Algebra as an Abelian Semigroup Expansion of osp(32|1)

A new Lagrangian realizing the symmetry of the M Algebra in eleven-dimensional space-time is presented. By means of the novel technique of Abelian Semigroup Expansion, a link between the M Algebra and the orthosymplectic algebra osp(32|1) is established, and an M Algebra-invariant symmetric tensor of rank six is computed. This symmetric invariant tensor is a key ingredient in the construction of the new Lagrangian. The gauge-invariant Lagrangian is displayed in an explicitly Lorentz-invariant way by means of a subspace separation method based on the extended Cartan homotopy formula.

The Extended Cartan Homotopy Formula and a Subspace Separation Method for Chern--Simons Theory

In the context of Chern--Simons (CS) Theory, a subspace separation method for the Lagrangian is proposed. The method is based on the iterative use of the Extended Cartan Homotopy Formula, and allows one to (1) separate the action in bulk and boundary contributions, and (2) systematically split the Lagrangian in appropriate reflection of the the subspace structure of the gauge algebra. In order to apply the method, one must regard CS forms as a particular case of more general objects known as transgression forms. Five-dimensional CS Supergravity is used as an example to illustrate the method.

Expanding Lie (super)algebras through abelian semigroups

We propose an outgrowth of the expansion method introduced by de Azcarraga et al. [Nucl. Phys. B 662 (2003) 185]. The basic idea consists in considering the direct product between an abelian semigroup S and a Lie algebra g. General conditions under which relevant subalgebras can systematically be extracted from S \times g are given. We show how, for a particular choice of semigroup S, the known cases of expanded algebras can be reobtained, while new ones arise from different choices. Concrete examples, including the M algebra and a D'Auria-Fre-like Superalgebra, are considered. Finally, we find explicit, non-trace invariant tensors for these S-expanded algebras, which are essential ingredients in, e.g., the formulation of Supergravity theories in arbitrary space-time dimensions.

Semigroup Expansion and M-Supergravity in Eleven Dimensions

This thesis deals with the construction of an eleven-dimensional gauge theory, off-shell invariant, for the M Algebra. The theory is built using a Transgression Form as a Lagrangian. In order to accomplish this, one must first analyze the general construction of Transgression Gauge Field Theories, for an arbitrary symmetry group (Chapter 3). Some interesting results regarding this point are (1) the calculation of Noether Charges which are off-shell conserved, (2) the association of the double connection structure of the Transgression Form with both orientations of the basis manifold and (3) the Subspace Separation Method, which allows us to divide the action in bulk and boundary terms, and to split them in terms which reflect the physics corresponding to a symmetry group choice. To construct the gauge theory explicitly, it is necessary to buid a new mathematical tool, called S-Expansion procedure. Analyzing the M Algebra under the light of this method, it is possible to construct an invariant tensor for it. This method is developed in a general way and, given a Lie algebra and an Abelian, finite semigroup, it allows us to generate new Lie algebras (S-Expanded Algebras, Resonant Subalgebras, Resonant Forced Algebras). Applying this tool, an invariant tensor for the M Algebra is constructed, which serves as the basis upon which a Transgression Gauge Field Theory for the M Algebra (Chapter 5) is constructed. The relationship between the four-dimensional dynamics from this theory and the eleven-dimensional torsion is also considered. Finally, we close with an analysis of the possible applications of the developed tools, in the context of Cosmology, Supergravity and String Theory.

On Transgression Forms and Chern--Simons (Super)gravity

A transgression form is proposed as lagrangian for a gauge field theory. The construction is first carried out for an arbitrary Lie Algebra g and then specialized to some particular cases. We exhibit the action, discuss its symmetries, write down the equations of motion and the boundary conditions that follow from it, and finally compute conserved charges. We also present a method, based on the iterative use of the Extended Cartan Homotopy Formula, which allows one to (i) systematically split the lagrangian in order to appropriately reflect the subspaces structure of the gauge algebra, and (ii) separate the lagrangian in bulk and boundary contributions. Chern--Simons Gravity and Supergravity are then used as examples to illustrate the method. In the end we discuss some further theoretical implications that arise naturally from the mathematical structure being considered.

Double-diffractive chi meson production at the hadron colliders

The double-diffractive production of chi_c and chi_b mesons, with a rapidity gap on either side, is studied, using both the Regge formalism and the perturbative QCD approach. Due to the rather low scale, the exclusive double-diffractive process pp \to p + chi + p is predicted to dominate, whereas the probability that the incoming protons dissociate is expected to be relatively small. We evaluate the corresponding chi production cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC energies. For the double-diffractive process with proton dissociation, it is possible to select events with large transverse momenta transferred through the rapidity gaps, by measuring the transverse energy, E_\perp, flows in the proton fragmentation regions. Then the large E_\perp provides a scale to justify the use of perturbative QCD, and to allow a spin-parity analysis of the centrally produced system to be performed, by studying the azimuthal angular correlations between the directions of the forward and backward E_\perp flows. The central production of the new X(3872) charmonium state is considered.

Euler Chern Simons Gravity from Lovelock Born Infeld Gravity

In the context of a gauge theoretical formulation, higher dimensional gravity invariant under the AdS group is dimensionally reduced to Euler-Chern-Simons gravity. The dimensional reduction procedure of Grignani-Nardelli [Phys. Lett. B 300, 38 (1993)] is generalized so as to permit reducing D-dimensional Lanczos Lovelock gravity to d=D-1 dimensions.

Higher dimensional gravity invariant under the AdS group

A higher dimensional gravity invariant both under local Lorentz rotations and under local Anti de Sitter boosts is constructed. It is shown that such a construction is possible both when odd dimensions and when even dimensions are considered. It is also proved that such actions have the same coefficients as those obtained by Troncoso and Zanelli.
