Interface-Flattening Transform for EM Field Modeling in Tilted, Cylindrically-Stratified Geophysical Media

We propose and investigate an "interface-flattening" transformation, hinging upon Transformation Optics (T.O.) techniques, to facilitate the rigorous analysis of electromagnetic (EM) fields radiated by sources embedded in tilted, cylindrically-layered geophysical media. Our method addresses the major challenge in such problems of appropriately approximating the domain boundaries in the computational model while, in a full-wave manner, predicting the effects of tilting in the layers. When incorporated into standard pseudo-analytical algorithms, moreover, the proposed method is quite robust, as it is not limited by absorption, anisotropy, and/or eccentering profile of the cylindrical geophysical formations, nor is it limited by the radiation frequency. These attributes of the proposed method are in contrast to past analysis methods for tilted-layer media that often place limitations on the source and medium characteristics. Through analytical derivations as well as a preliminary numerical investigation, we analyze and discuss the method's strengths and limitations.

Spectral-Domain Computation of Fields Radiated by Sources in Non-Birefringent Anisotropic Media

We derive the key expressions to robustly address the eigenfunction expansion-based analysis of electromagnetic (EM) fields produced by current sources within planar non-birefringent anisotropic medium (NBAM) layers. In NBAM, the highly symmetric permeability and permittivity tensors can induce directionally-dependent, but polarization independent, propagation properties supporting "degenerate" characteristic polarizations, i.e. four linearly-independent eigenvectors associated with only two (rather than four) unique, non-defective eigenvalues. We first explain problems that can arise when the source(s) specifically reside within NBAM planar layers when using canonical field expressions. To remedy these problems, we exhibit alternative spectral-domain field expressions, immune to such problems, that form the foundation for a robust eigenfunction expansion-based analysis of time-harmonic EM radiation and scattering within such type of planar-layered media. Numerical results demonstrate the high accuracy and stability achievable using this algorithm.

Perfectly Reflectionless Omnidirectional Absorbers and Electromagnetic Horizons

We demonstrate the existence of metamaterial blueprints describing, and fundamental limitations concerning, perfectly reflectionless omnidirectional electromagnetic absorbers (PR-OEMA). Previous attempts to define PR-OEMA blueprints have led to active (gain), rather than passive, media. We explain this fact and unveil new, distinct limitations of true PR-OEMA devices, including the appearance of an "electromagnetic horizon" on physical solutions. As practical alternatives we introduce alternative OEMA blueprints corresponding to media that, while not reflectionless, are nonetheless effective in absorbing incident waves in a manner robust to incident wave diversity.

Full-Wave Algorithm to Model Effects of Bedding Slopes on the Response of Subsurface Electromagnetic Geophysical Sensors near Unconformities

We propose a full-wave pseudo-analytical numerical electromagnetic (EM) algorithm to model subsurface induction sensors, traversing planar-layered geological formations of arbitrary EM material anisotropy and loss, which are used, for example, in the exploration of hydrocarbon reserves. Unlike past pseudo-analytical planar-layered modeling algorithms that impose parallelism between the formation's bed junctions however, our method involves judicious employment of Transformation Optics techniques to address challenges related to modeling relative slope (i.e., tilting) between said junctions (including arbitrary azimuth orientation of each junction). The algorithm exhibits this flexibility, both with respect to loss and anisotropy in the formation layers as well as junction tilting, via employing special planar slabs that coat each "flattened" (i.e., originally tilted) planar interface, locally redirecting the incident wave within the coating slabs to cause wave fronts to interact with the flattened interfaces as if they were still tilted with a specific, user-defined orientation. Moreover, since the coating layers are homogeneous rather than exhibiting continuous material variation, a minimal number of these layers must be inserted and hence reduces added simulation time and computational expense. As said coating layers are not reflectionless however, they do induce artificial field scattering that corrupts legitimate field signatures due to the (effective) interface tilting. Numerical results, for two half-spaces separated by a tilted interface, quantify error trends versus material and sensor characteristics. We finally exhibit responses of sensors traversing three-layered media, where we vary the anisotropy, loss, and relative tilting of the formations and explore the sensitivity of the sensor's complex-valued measurements.

Interference-Nulling Time-Reversal Beamforming for mm-Wave Massive MIMO in Multi-User Frequency-Selective Indoor Channels

Millimeter wave (mm-wave) and massive MIMO have been proposed for next generation wireless systems. However, there are many open problems for the implementation of those technologies. In particular, beamforming is necessary in mm-wave systems in order to counter high propagation losses. However, conventional beamsteering is not always appropriate in rich scattering multipath channels with frequency selective fading, such as those found in indoor environments. In this context, time-reversal (TR) is considered a promising beamforming technique for such mm-wave massive MIMO systems. In this paper, we analyze a baseband TR beamforming system for mm-wave multi-user massive MIMO. We verify that, as the number of antennas increases, TR yields good equalization and interference mitigation properties, but inter-user interference (IUI) remains a main impairment. Thus, we propose a novel technique called interference-nulling TR (INTR) to minimize IUI. We evaluate numerically the performance of INTR and compare it with conventional TR and equalized TR beamforming. We use a 60 GHz MIMO channel model with spatial correlation based on the IEEE 802.11ad SISO NLoS model. We demonstrate that INTR outperforms conventional TR with respect to average BER per user and achievable sum rate under diverse conditions, providing both diversity and multiplexing gains simultaneously.

Computation of potentials from current electrodes in cylindrically stratified media: A stable, rescaled semi-analytical formulation

We present an efficient and robust semi-analytical formulation to compute the electric potential due to arbitrary-located point electrodes in three-dimensional cylindrically stratified media, where the radial thickness and the medium resistivity of each cylindrical layer can vary by many orders of magnitude. A basic roadblock for robust potential computations in such scenarios is the poor scaling of modified-Bessel functions used for computation of the semi-analytical solution, for extreme arguments and/or orders. To accommodate this, we construct a set of rescaled versions of modified-Bessel functions, which avoids underflows and overflows in finite precision arithmetic, and minimizes round-off errors. In addition, several extrapolation methods are applied and compared to expedite the numerical evaluation of the (otherwise slowly convergent) associated Sommerfeld-type integrals. The proposed algorithm is verified in a number of scenarios relevant to geophysical exploration, but the general formulation presented is also applicable to other problems governed by Poisson equation such as Newtonian gravity, heat flow, and potential flow in fluid mechanics, involving cylindrically stratified environments.
