Bounding the density of spherical polygon packings

We determine putative optimal packings of regular spherical polygons via optimization on smooth manifolds. For several cases, we establish maximality by extending the Lovász theta number to Cayley graphs on the special orthogonal group ${\rm SO}(3)$. To this end, we introduce an algebraic criterion characterizing when congruent regular spherical polygons have disjoint interiors, leading to a unified formulation of the packing constraints. Using harmonic analysis on ${\rm SO}(3)$, we reduce the theta number to a trigonometric sum-of-squares problem, which can be solved via semidefinite programming.

Optimization hierarchies for distance-avoiding sets in compact spaces

Witsenhausen's problem asks for the maximum fraction $α_n$ of the $n$-dimensional unit sphere that can be covered by a measurable set containing no pairs of orthogonal points. The best upper bounds for $α_n$ are given by extensions of the Lovász theta number. In this paper, optimization hierarchies based on the Lovász theta number, like the Lasserre hierarchy, are extended to Witsenhausen's problem and similar problems. These hierarchies are shown to converge and are used to compute the best upper bounds for $α_n$ in low dimensions.

Obtuse almost-equiangular sets

For $t \in [-1, 1)$, a set of points on the $(n-1)$-dimensional unit sphere is called $t$-almost equiangular if among any three distinct points there is a pair with inner product $t$. We propose a semidefinite programming upper bound for the maximum cardinality $α(n, t)$ of such a set based on an extension of the Lovász theta number to hypergraphs. This bound is at least as good as previously known bounds and for many values of $n$ and $t$ it is better. We also refine existing spectral methods to show that $α(n, t) \leq 2(n+1)$ for all $n$ and $t \leq 0$, with equality only at $t = -1/n$. This allows us to show the uniqueness of the optimal construction at $t = -1/n$ for $n \leq 5$ and to enumerate all possible constructions for $n \leq 3$ and $t \leq 0$.

Complete positivity and distance-avoiding sets

We introduce the cone of completely-positive functions, a subset of the cone of positive-type functions, and use it to fully characterize maximum-density distance-avoiding sets as the optimal solutions of a convex optimization problem. As a consequence of this characterization, it is possible to reprove and improve many results concerning distance-avoiding sets on the sphere and in Euclidean space.

A recursive theta body for hypergraphs

The theta body of a graph, introduced by Grötschel, Lovász, and Schrijver in 1986, is a tractable relaxation of the independent-set polytope derived from the Lovász theta number. In this paper, we recursively extend the theta body, and hence the theta number, to hypergraphs. We obtain fundamental properties of this extension and relate it to the high-dimensional Hoffman bound of Filmus, Golubev, and Lifshitz. We discuss two applications: triangle-free graphs and Mantel's theorem, and bounds on the density of triangle-avoiding sets in the Hamming cube.

A recursive Lovász theta number for simplex-avoiding sets

We recursively extend the Lovász theta number to geometric hypergraphs on the unit sphere and on Euclidean space, obtaining an upper bound for the independence ratio of these hypergraphs. As an application we reprove a result in Euclidean Ramsey theory in the measurable setting, namely that every $k$-simplex is exponentially Ramsey, and we improve existing bounds for the base of the exponential.

On the integrality gap of the maximum-cut semidefinite programming relaxation in fixed dimension

We describe a factor-revealing convex optimization problem for the integrality gap of the maximum-cut semidefinite programming relaxation: for each $n \geq 2$ we present a convex optimization problem whose optimal value is the largest possible ratio between the value of an optimal rank-$n$ solution to the relaxation and the value of an optimal cut. This problem is then used to compute lower bounds for the integrality gap.

Semidefinite programming bounds for the average kissing number

The average kissing number of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the supremum of the average degrees of contact graphs of packings of finitely many balls (of any radii) in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an upper bound for the average kissing number based on semidefinite programming that improves previous bounds in dimensions $3, \ldots, 9$. A very simple upper bound for the average kissing number is twice the kissing number; in dimensions $6, \ldots, 9$ our new bound is the first to improve on this simple upper bound.

$k$-point semidefinite programming bounds for equiangular lines

We give a hierarchy of $k$-point bounds extending the Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel linear programming $2$-point bound and the Bachoc-Vallentin semidefinite programming $3$-point bound for spherical codes. An optimized implementation of this hierarchy allows us to compute~$4$, $5$, and $6$-point bounds for the maximum number of equiangular lines in Euclidean space with a fixed common angle.

New upper bounds for the density of translative packings of three-dimensional convex bodies with tetrahedral symmetry

In this paper we determine new upper bounds for the maximal density of translative packings of superballs in three dimensions (unit balls for the $l^p_3$-norm) and of Platonic and Archimedean solids having tetrahedral symmetry. Thereby, we improve Zong's recent upper bound for the maximal density of translative packings of regular tetrahedra from $0.3840\ldots$ to $0.3745\ldots$, getting closer to the best known lower bound of $0.3673\ldots$ We apply the linear programming bound of Cohn and Elkies which originally was designed for the classical problem of densest packings of round spheres. The proofs of our new upper bounds are computational and rigorous. Our main technical contribution is the use of invariant theory of pseudo-reflection groups in polynomial optimization.

Improving the semidefinite programming bound for the kissing number by exploiting polynomial symmetry

The kissing number of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the maximum number of pairwise-nonoverlapping unit spheres that can simultaneously touch a central unit sphere. Mittelmann and Vallentin (2010), based on the semidefinite programming bound of Bachoc and Vallentin (2008), computed the best known upper bounds for the kissing number for several values of $n \leq 23$. In this paper, we exploit the symmetry present in the semidefinite programming bound to provide improved upper bounds for $n = 9, \ldots, 23$.

Flag Algebras: A First Glance

The theory of flag algebras, introduced by Razborov in 2007, has opened the way to a systematic approach to the development of computer-assisted proofs in extremal combinatorics. It makes it possible to derive bounds for parameters in extremal combinatorics with the help of a computer, in a semi-automated manner. This article describes the main points of the theory in a complete way, using Mantel's theorem as a guiding example.

Computing upper bounds for the packing density of congruent copies of a convex body

In this paper we prove a theorem that provides an upper bound for the density of packings of congruent copies of a given convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$; this theorem is a generalization of the linear programming bound for sphere packings. We illustrate its use by computing an upper bound for the maximum density of packings of regular pentagons in the plane. Our computational approach is numerical and uses a combination of semidefinite programming, sums of squares, and the harmonic analysis of the Euclidean motion group. We show how, with some extra work, the bounds so obtained can be made rigorous.

Mathematical optimization for packing problems

During the last few years several new results on packing problems were obtained using a blend of tools from semidefinite optimization, polynomial optimization, and harmonic analysis. We survey some of these results and the techniques involved, concentrating on geometric packing problems such as the sphere-packing problem or the problem of packing regular tetrahedra in R^3.

Better bounds for planar sets avoiding unit distances

A $1$-avoiding set is a subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that does not contain pairs of points at distance $1$. Let $m_1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ denote the maximum fraction of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that can be covered by a measurable $1$-avoiding set. We prove two results. First, we show that any $1$-avoiding set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\ge 2$) that displays block structure (i.e., is made up of blocks such that the distance between any two points from the same block is less than $1$ and points from distinct blocks lie farther than $1$ unit of distance apart from each other) has density strictly less than $1/2^n$. For the special case of sets with block structure this proves a conjecture of Erdős asserting that $m_1(\mathbb{R}^2) < 1/4$. Second, we use linear programming and harmonic analysis to show that $m_1(\mathbb{R}^2) \leq 0.258795$.

A quantitative version of Steinhaus' theorem for compact, connected, rank-one symmetric spaces

Let $d_1$, $d_2$, ... be a sequence of positive numbers that converges to zero. A generalization of Steinhaus' theorem due to Weil implies that, if a subset of a homogeneous Riemannian manifold has no pair of points at distances $d_1$, $d_2$, ... from each other, then it has to have measure zero. We present a quantitative version of this result for compact, connected, rank-one symmetric spaces, by showing how to choose distances so that the measure of a subset not containing pairs of points at these distances decays exponentially in the number of distances.
