BIonic membranes and AdS instabilities

We study 4d membranes in type IIA flux compactifications of the form AdS$_4 \times X_6$, where $X_6$ admits a Calabi--Yau metric. These models feature scale separation and D6-branes/O6-planes on three-cycles of $X_6$. When the latter are treated as localised sources, explicit solutions to the 10d equations of motion and Bianchi identities are known in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ settings, valid at first order in an expansion parameter related to the AdS$_4$ cosmological constant. We extend such solutions to a family of perturbatively stable $\mathcal{N}=0$ vacua, and analyse their non-perturbative stability by looking at 4d membranes. Up to the accuracy of the solution, we find that either D4-branes or anti-D4-branes on holomorphic curves feel no force in both $\mathcal{N} =1$ and $\mathcal{N}=0$ AdS$_4$. Differently, D8-branes wrapping $X_6$ and with D6-branes ending on them can be superextremal 4d membranes attracted towards the $\mathcal{N}=0$ AdS$_4$ boundary. The sources of imbalance are the curvature of $X_6$ and the D8/D6 BIon profile, with both comparable terms as can be checked for $X_6$ a (blown-up) toroidal orbifold. We then show that simple $\mathcal{N}=0$ vacua with space-time filling D6-branes are unstable against bubble nucleation, decaying to $\mathcal{N}=0$ vacua with less D6-branes and larger Romans mass.

Membranes in AdS4 orientifold vacua and their Weak Gravity Conjecture

We study type IIA orientifold compactifications with fluxes that give rise to perturbatively stable, non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua with D6-brane gauge sectors. Non-perturbative instabilities can be mediated by D8-branes wrapped on the six internal dimensions $X_6$, if they reduce to 4d membranes with a charge $Q$ larger than its tension $T$. The mismatch $Q \neq T$ arises due to i) curvature corrections and ii) the BIon backreaction of D6-branes wrapping 3-cycles of $X_6$. We give a simple expression for the second effect in toroidal orientifolds, and find that only pairs of 3-cycles at SU(2) angles contribute to it. They either contribute towards $Q>T$ or $Q<T$ depending on the 3-cycles separation, allowing to engineer 4d $\mathcal{N}=0$ vacua in tension with the Weak Gravity Conjecture for membranes.

Large Field Distances from EFT strings

In any consistent effective field theory of quantum gravity limits of infinite field distance are expected to lead to the EFT breakdown due to the appearance of an infinite tower of light states, as predicted by the Distance Conjecture. We review the Distant Axionic String Conjecture, which proposes that any 4d EFT infinite-field-distance limit can be realized as an RG flow of a fundamental axionic string. The RG flow can be understood in terms of the 4d backreaction of such a string, and implies that it becomes tensionless towards the said limit. This property is understood as a shielding mechanism towards realizing an exact axionic symmetry, and it implies the breakdown of the EFT in a way that reproduces the Distance Conjecture. Motivated by string theory data we further propose the Integral Scaling Conjecture, which provides a specific relation between the string tension and the EFT maximal cut-off set by the infinite tower of states.

On supersymmetric AdS$_4$ orientifold vacua

In this work we study ten-dimensional solutions to type IIA string theory of the form AdS$_4$ x $X_6$ which contain orientifold planes and preserve N=1 supersymmetry. In particular, we consider solutions which exhibit some key features of the four-dimensional DGKT proposal for compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds with fluxes, and in this sense may be considered their ten-dimensional uplifts. We focus on the supersymmetry equations and Bianchi identities, and find solutions to these that are valid at the two-derivative level and at first order in an expansion parameter which is related to the AdS cosmological constant. This family of solutions is such that the background metric is deformed from the Ricci-flat one to one exhibiting SU(3)xSU(3)-structure, and dilaton gradients and warp factors are induced.

The EFT stringy viewpoint on large distances

We observe a direct relation between the existence of fundamental axionic strings, dubbed EFT strings, and infinite distance limits in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ EFTs coupled to gravity. The backreaction of EFT strings can be interpreted as RG flow of their couplings, and allows one to probe different regimes within the field space of the theory. We propose that any 4d EFT infinite distance limit can be realised as an EFT string flow. We show that along such limits the EFT string becomes asymptotically tensionless, and so the EFT eventually breaks down. This provides an upper bound for the maximal field range of an EFT with a finite cut-off, and reproduces the Swampland Distance Conjecture from a bottom-up perspective. Even if there are typically other towers of particles becoming light, we propose that the mass of the leading tower scales as $m^2\sim \mathcal{T}^w$ in Planck units, with $\mathcal{T}$ the EFT string tension and $w$ a positive integer. Our results hold even in the presence of a non-trivial potential, as long as its energy scale remains well below the cut-off. We check both proposals for large classes of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ string compactifications, finding that only the values $w=1,2,3$ are realised.

Swampland Conjectures for Strings and Membranes

Swampland criteria like the Weak Gravity Conjecture should not only apply to particles, but also to other lower-codimension charged objects in 4d EFTs like strings and membranes. However, the description of the latter is in general subtle due to their large backreaction effects. In the context of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ EFTs, we consider $\frac12$BPS strings and membranes which are fundamental, in the sense that they cannot be resolved within the EFT regime. We argue that, if interpreted from the EFT viewpoint, the 4d backreaction of these objects translates into a classical RG flow of their couplings. Constraints on the UV charges and tensions get then translated to constraints on the axionic kinetic terms and scalar potential of the EFT. This uncovers new relations among the Swampland Conjectures, which become interconnected by the physical properties of low-codimension objects. In particular, using that string RG flows describe infinite field distance limits, we show that the WGC for strings implies the Swampland Distance Conjecture. Similarly, WGC-saturating membranes generate a scalar potential satisfying the de Sitter Conjecture.

Systematics of Type IIA moduli stabilisation

We analyse the flux-induced scalar potential for type IIA orientifolds in the presence of $p$-form, geometric and non-geometric fluxes. Just like in the Calabi-Yau case, the potential presents a bilinear structure, with a factorised dependence on axions and saxions. This feature allows one to perform a systematic search for vacua, which we implement for the case of geometric backgrounds. Guided by stability criteria, we consider configurations with a particular on-shell F-term pattern, for which we derive a no-go result for de Sitter extrema. We classify branches of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua, and argue that the latter are perturbatively stable for a large subset of them. Our solutions reproduce and generalise previous results in the literature, obtained either from the 4d or 10d viewpoint.

A vanishing theorem for T-branes

We consider regular polystable Higgs pairs $(E, ϕ)$ on compact complex manifolds. We show that a non-trivial Higgs field $ϕ\in H^0 ({\rm End} (E) \otimes K_S)$ restricts the Ricci curvature of the manifold, generalising previous results in the literature. In particular $ϕ$ must vanish for positive Ricci curvature, while for trivial canonical bundle it must be proportional to the identity. For Kähler surfaces, our results provide a new vanishing theorem for solutions to the Vafa--Witten equations. Moreover they constrain supersymmetric 7-brane configurations in F-theory, giving obstructions to the existence of T-branes, i.e. solutions with $[ϕ, ϕ^\dagger] \neq 0$. When non-trivial Higgs fields are allowed, we give a general characterisation of their structure in terms of vector bundle data, which we then illustrate in explicit examples.

A Landscape of AdS Flux Vacua

We analyse type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds with background fluxes and D6-branes. Rewriting the F-term scalar potential as a bilinear in flux-axion polynomials yields a more efficient description of the Landscape of flux vacua, as they are invariant under the discrete shift symmetries of the 4d effective theory. In particular, expressing the extremisation conditions of the scalar potential in terms of such polynomials allows for a systematic search of vacua. We classify families of N=0 Minkowski, N=1 AdS and N=0 AdS flux vacua, extending previous findings in the literature to the Calabi-Yau context. We compute the spectrum of flux-induced masses for some of them and show that they are perturbatively stable, and in particular find a branch of N=0 AdS vacua where tachyons are absent. Finally, we extend this Landscape to the open string sector by including mobile D6-branes and their fluxes.

Instanton Corrections and Emergent Strings

We study limits of infinite distance in the moduli space of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ string compactifications, in which instanton effects dominate. We first consider trajectories in the hypermultiplet moduli space of type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications. We observe a correspondence between towers of D-brane instantons and D-brane 4d strings, such that the lighter the string the more relevant the instanton effects are. The dominant instantons modify the classical trajectory such that the lightest D-brane string becomes tensionless even faster, while the other strings are prevented to go below the fundamental string tension. This lightest string is dual to a fundamental type IIB string and realises the Emergent String Conjecture. We also consider the vector multiplet moduli space of type I string theory on $K3 \times T^2$ , where quantum corrections can also become significant. Naively, we only find trajectories that correspond to decompactification limits, in apparent contradiction with the picture obtained in some dual setup.

How many fluxes fit in an EFT?

We extend the recent construction of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ three-form Lagrangians by including the most general three-form multiplets necessary to reproduce any F-term potential in string flux compactifications. In this context we find an obstruction to dualize all fluxes to three-forms in the effective field theory. This implies that, generically, a single EFT cannot capture all the membrane-mediated flux transitions expected from a string theory construction, but only a sublattice of them. The obstruction can be detected from the maximal number of three-forms per scalar in any supermultiplet, and from the gaugings involving three-forms that appear in the EFT. Some gaugings are related to the appearance of fluxes in the tadpole conditions, and give a general obstruction. Others are related to the anomalous axionic strings present in a specific compactification regime. We illustrate the structure of the three-form Lagrangian in type II and F/M-theory setups, where we argue that the above obstructions correlate with the different 4d membrane tensions with respect to the EFT energy scales.

Instantons and infinite distances

We consider geodesics of infinite length and constant 4d dilaton in the (classical) hypermultiplet moduli space of type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. When approaching such infinite distance points, a large amount of D-instantons develop an exponentially suppressed action, substantially modifying the moduli space metric. We consider a particular large volume/strong coupling trajectory for which, in the corrected metric, the path length becomes finite. The instanton effects also modify the cllassical 4d dilaton such that, in order to keep the 4d Planck mass finite, the string scale has to be lowered. Our results can be related, via the c-map, to the physics around points of infinite distance in the vector multiplet moduli space where the Swampland Distance Conjecture and the Emergence Proposal have been discussed, and provide further evidence for them.

Type IIA Flux Vacua and $α'$-corrections

We analyse type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds with backgroud fluxes, taking into account the effect of perturbative $α'$-corrections. In particular, we consider the $α'$-corrections that modify the metrics in the Kähler sector of the compactification. As it has been argued in the literature, including such $α'$-corrections allows to construct the mirror duals of type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications, in which the effect of flux backreaction is under control. We compute the $α'$-corrected scalar potential generated by the presence of RR and NS fluxes, and reformulate it as a bilinear of the flux-axion polynomials invariant under the discrete shift symmetries of the compactification. The use of such invariants allows to express in a compact and simple manner the conditions for Minkowski and AdS flux vacua, and to extract the effect of $α'$-corrections on them.

T-branes and defects

We study T-branes on compact Kaehler surfaces, in the presence of fields localised at curves. If such fields are treated as defects, their vevs induce delta-function sources for the 7-brane background, possibly leading to profiles with poles. We find that the presence of defect sources relaxes the constraints on globally well-defined T-brane configurations, avoiding the obstruction to building them on surfaces of positive curvature. Profiles with poles can be understood, from a 4d viewpoint, as non-trivial vevs for massive modes induced by the defects, and come with their own set of constraints. In the special case of fields localised on a self-intersection curve, we show how to retrieve the Hitchin system with defects from an ordinary global one with enhanced symmetry.

Type IIA Flux Vacua with Mobile D6-branes

We analyse type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds with background fluxes and D6-branes. The presence of D6-brane deformation moduli redefines the 4d dilaton and complex structure fields and complicates the analysis of such vacua in terms of the effective Kahler potential and superpotential. One may however formulate the F-term scalar potential as a bilinear form on the flux-axion polynomials $ρ_A$ invariant under the discrete shift symmetries of the 4d effective theory. We express the conditions for Minkoswki and AdS flux vacua in terms of such polynomials, which allow to extend the analysis to include vacua with mobile D6-branes. We find a new, more general class of N = 0 Minkowski vacua, which nevertheless present a fairly simple structure of (contravariant) F-terms. We compute the soft-term spectrum for chiral models of intersecting D6-branes in such vacua, finding a quite universal pattern.

Compact T-branes

We analyse global aspects of 7-brane backgrounds with a non-commuting profile for their worldvolume scalars, also known as T-branes. In particular, we consider configurations with no poles and globally well-defined over a compact Kähler surface. We find that such T-branes cannot be constructed on surfaces of positive or vanishing Ricci curvature. For the existing T-branes, we discuss their stability as we move in Kähler moduli space at large volume and provide examples of T-branes splitting into non-mutually-supersymmetric constituents as they cross a stability wall.

The Type IIA Flux Potential, 4-forms and Freed-Witten anomalies

We compute the full classical 4d scalar potential of type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of fluxes and D6-branes. We show that it can be written as a bilinear form $V = Z^{AB} ρ_Aρ_B$, where the $ρ_A$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the 4-form fluxes of the 4d effective theory. The $ρ_A$ only depend on the internal fluxes, the axions and the topological data of the compactification, and are fully determined by the Freed-Witten anomalies of branes that appear as 4d string defects. The quadratic form $Z^{AB}$ only depends on the saxionic partners of these axions. In general, the $ρ_A$ can be seen as the basic invariants under the discrete shift symmetries of the 4d effective theory, and therefore the building blocks of any flux-dependent quantity. All these polynomials may be obtained by derivation from one of them, associated to a universal 4-form. The standard N=1 supergravity flux superpotential is uniquely determined from this {\it master polynomial}, and vice versa.

Flux Flattening in Axion Monodromy Inflation

String theory models of axion monodromy inflation exhibit scalar potentials which are quadratic for small values of the inflaton field and evolve to a more complicated function for large field values. Oftentimes the large field behaviour is gentler than quadratic, lowering the tensor-to-scalar ratio. This effect, known as flattening, has been observed in the string theory context through the properties of the DBI+CS D-brane action. We revisit such flattening effects in type IIB flux compactifications with mobile D7-branes, with the inflaton identified with the D7-brane position. We observe that, with a generic choice of background fluxes, flattening effects are larger than previously observed, allowing to fit these models within current experimental bounds. In particular, we compute the cosmological observables in scenarios compatible with closed-string moduli stabilisation, finding tensor-to-scalar ratios as low as r ~ 0.04. These are models of single field inflation in which the inflaton is much lighter than the other scalars through a mild tuning of the compactification data.
