Flux and Instanton Effects in Local F-theory Models and Hierarchical Fermion Masses

We study the deformation induced by fluxes and instanton effects on Yukawa couplings involving 7-brane intersections in local F-theory constructions. In the absence of non-perturbative effects, holomorphic Yukawa couplings do not depend on open string fluxes. On the other hand instanton effects (or gaugino condensation on distant 7-branes) do induce corrections to the Yukawas. The leading order effect may also be captured by the presence of closed string (1,2) IASD fluxes, which give rise to a non-commutative structure. We check that even in the presence of these non-perturbative effects the holomorphic Yukawas remain independent of magnetic fluxes. Although fermion mass hierarchies may be obtained from these non-perturbative effects, they would give identical Yukawa couplings for D-quark and Lepton masses in SU(5) F-theory GUT's, in contradiction with experiment. We point out that this problem may be solved by appropriately normalizing the wavefunctions. We show in a simple toy model how the presence of hypercharge flux may then be responsible for the difference between D-quarks and Lepton masses in local SU(5) GUT's.

Chiral matter wavefunctions in warped compactifications

We analyze the wavefunctions for open strings stretching between intersecting 7-branes in type IIB/F-theory warped compactifications, as a first step in understanding the warped effective field theory of 4d chiral fermions. While in general the equations of motion do not seem to admit a simple analytic solution, we provide a method for solving the wavefunctions in the case of weak warping. The method describes warped zero modes as a perturbative expansion in the unwarped spectrum, the coefficients of the expansion depending on the warping. We perform our analysis with and without the presence of worldvolume fluxes, illustrating the procedure with some examples. Finally, we comment on the warped effective field theory for the modes at the intersection.

Non-perturbative effects on seven-brane Yukawa couplings

We analyze non-perturbative corrections to the superpotential of seven-brane gauge theories on type IIB and F-theory warped Calabi-Yau compactifications. We show in particular that such corrections modify the holomorphic Yukawa couplings by an exponentially suppressed contribution, generically solving the Yukawa rank-one problem present in F-theory local models. We provide explicit expressions for the non-perturbative correction to the seven-brane superpotential, and check that it is related to a non-commutative deformation to the tree-level superpotential via the Seiberg-Witten map.

DWSB in heterotic flux compactifications

We address the construction of non-supersymmetric vacua in heterotic compactifications with intrinsic torsion and background fluxes. In particular, we implement the approach of domain-wall supersymmetry breaking (DWSB) previously developed in the context of type II flux compactifications. This approach is based on considering backgrounds where probe NS5-branes wrapping internal three-cycles and showing up as four-dimensional domain-walls do not develop a BPS bound, while all the other BPS bounds characterizing the N=1 supersymmetric compactifications are preserved at tree-level. Via a scalar potential analysis we provide the conditions for these backgrounds to solve the ten-dimensional equations of motion including order α' corrections. We also consider backgrounds where some of the NS5-domain-walls develop a BPS bound, show their relation to no-scale SUSY-breaking vacua and construct explicit examples via elliptic fibrations. Finally, we consider backgrounds with a non-trivial gaugino condensate and discuss their relation to supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua in the present context.

Open string wavefunctions in flux compactifications

We consider compactifications of type I supergravity on manifolds with SU(3) structure, in the presence of RR fluxes and magnetized D9-branes, and analyze the generalized Dirac and Laplace-Beltrami operators associated to the D9-brane worldvolume fields. These compactifications are T-dual to standard type IIB toroidal orientifolds with NSNS and RR 3-form fluxes and D3/D7 branes. By using techniques of representation theory and harmonic analysis, the spectrum of open string wavefunctions can be computed for Lie groups and their quotients, as we illustrate with explicit twisted tori examples. We find a correspondence between irreducible unitary representations of the Kaloper-Myers algebra and families of Kaluza-Klein excitations. We perform the computation of 2- and 3-point couplings for matter fields in the above flux compactifications, and compare our results with those of 4d effective supergravity.

Open String Wavefunctions in Warped Compactifications

We analyze the wavefunctions for open strings in warped compactifications, and compute the warped Kahler potential for the light modes of a probe D-brane. This analysis not only applies to the dynamics of D-branes in warped backgrounds, but also allows to deduce warping corrections to the closed string Kahler metrics via their couplings to open strings. We consider in particular the spectrum of D7-branes in warped Calabi-Yau orientifolds, which provide a string theory realizations of the Randall-Sundrum scenario. We find that certain background fluxes, necessary in the presence of warping, couple to the fermionic wavefunctions and qualitatively change their behavior. This modified dependence of the wavefunctions are needed for consistency with supersymmetry, though it is present in non-supersymmetric vacua as well. We discuss the deviations of our setup from the RS scenario and, as an application of our results, compute the warping corrections to Yukawa couplings in a simple model. Our analysis is performed both with and without the presence of D-brane world-volume flux, as well as for the case of backgrounds with varying dilaton.

Generalized non-supersymmetric flux vacua

We discuss a novel strategy to construct 4D N=0 stable flux vacua of type II string theory, based on the existence of BPS bounds for probe D-branes in some of these backgrounds. In particular, we consider compactifications where D-branes filling the 4D space-time obey the same BPS bound as they would in an N=1 compactification, while other D-branes, like those appearing as domain walls from the 4D perspective, can no longer be BPS. We construct a subfamily of such backgrounds giving rise to 4D N=0 Minkowski no-scale vacua, generalizing the well-known case of type IIB on a warped Calabi-Yau. We provide several explicit examples of these constructions, and compute quantities of phenomenological interest like flux-induced soft terms on D-branes. Our results have a natural, simple description in the language of Generalized Complex Geometry, and in particular in terms of D-brane generalized calibrations. Finally, we extend the integrability theorems for 10D supersymmetric type II backgrounds to the N=0 case and use the results to construct a new class of N=0 AdS4 compactifications.

Non-perturbative F-terms across lines of BPS stability

We consider non-perturbative terms in the 4d effective action due to BPS D-brane instantons, and study their continuity properties in moduli space as instantons cross lines of BPS stability, potentially becoming non-BPS. We argue that BPS instantons contributing to the superpotential cannot become non-BPS anywhere in moduli space, since they cannot account for the required four goldstino fermion zero modes. At most they can reach lines of threshold stability, where they split into mutually BPS multi-instantons, as already discussed in the literature. On the other hand, instantons with additional fermion zero modes, contributing to multi-fermion F-terms, can indeed cross genuine lines of marginal stability, beyond which they lead to non-BPS systems. The non-BPS instanton generates an operator which is a D-term locally in moduli space, but not globally. This is due to a cohomological obstruction localized on the BPS locus, where the D-term must be written as an F-term, thus ensuring the continuity of the 4d contribution to the effective action. We also point out an interesting relation between lifting of fermion zero modes on instantons and 4d supersymmetry breaking.

Non-geometric fluxes as supergravity backgrounds

We consider examples of D=4 string theory vacua which, although globally non-geometric, admit a local description in terms of D=10 supergravity backgrounds. We analyze such backgrounds and find that the supersymmetry spinors vary non-trivially along the internal manifold, reproducing the interpolating supergravity solutions found by Frey and Grana. Finally, we propose a simple, local expression for non-geometric fluxes in terms of the internal spinors of the compactification.

Progress in D-brane model building

The state of the art in D-brane model building is briefly reviewed, focusing on recent achievements in the construction of D=4 N = 1 type II string vacua with semi-realistic gauge sectors. Such progress relies on a better understanding of the spectrum of BPS D-branes, the effective field theory obtained from them and the explicit construction of vacua. We first consider D-branes in standard Calabi-Yau compactifications, and then the more involved case of compactifications with fluxes. We discuss how the non-trivial interplay between D-branes and fluxes modifies the previous model-building rules, as well as provides new possibilities to connect string theory to particle physics.

D6-branes and torsion

The D6-brane spectrum of type IIA vacua based on twisted tori and RR background fluxes is analyzed. In particular, we compute the torsion factors of the (co)homology groups H_n and describe the effect that they have on D6-brane physics. For instance, the fact that H_3 contains Z_N subgroups explains why RR tadpole conditions are affected by geometric fluxes. In addition, the presence of torsional (co)homology shows why some D6-brane moduli are lifted, and it suggests how the D-brane discretum appears in type IIA flux compactifications. Finally, we give a clear, geometrical understanding of the Freed-Witten anomaly in the present type IIA setup, and discuss its consequences for the construction of semi-realistic flux vacua.

An Open String Landscape

The effect of fluxes on open string moduli is studied by analyzing the constraints imposed by supersymmetry on D-branes in type IIB flux backgrounds. We show that generically the conditions of supersymmetry cannot be maintained when moving along the geometrical moduli space of the brane, so that open string moduli are lifted. We argue that there is a disconnected and discrete set of supersymmetric solutions to the open string equations of motion, which extends the familiar closed string landscape to the open string sector.

Building MSSM Flux Vacua

We construct N=1 and N=0 chiral four-dimensional vacua of flux compactification in Type IIB string theory. These vacua have the common features that they are free of tadpole instabilities (both NSNS and RR) even for models with N=0 supersymmetry. In addition, the dilaton/complex structure moduli are stabilised and the supergravity background metric is warped. We present an example in which the low energy spectrum contains the MSSM spectrum with three generations of chiral matter. In the N=0 models, the background fluxes which stabilise the moduli also induce soft supersymmetry breaking terms in the gauge and chiral sectors of the theory, while satisfying the equation of motion. We also discuss some phenomenological features of these three generation MSSM flux vacua. Our techniques apply to other closed string backgrounds as well and, in fact, also allow to find new N=1 D-brane models which were believed not to exist. Finally, we discuss in detail the consistency conditions of these flux compactifications. Cancellation of K-theory charges puts additional constraints on the consistency of the models, which render some chiral D-brane models in the literature inconsistent.

Chiral D-brane Models with Frozen Open String Moduli

Most intersecting D-brane vacua in the literature contain additional massless adjoint fields in their low energy spectrum. The existence of these additional fields make it difficult to obtain negative beta functions and, eventually, asymptotic freedom. We address this important issue for N=1 intersecting D-brane models, rephrasing the problems in terms of (open string) moduli stabilization. In particular, we consider a Z2 x Z2 orientifold construction where D6-branes wrap rigid 3-cycles and such extra adjoint fields do not arise. We derive the model building rules and consistency conditions for intersecting branes in this background, and provide N=1 chiral vacua free of adjoint fields. More precisely, we construct a Pati-Salam-like model whose SU(4) gauge group is asymptotically free. We also comment on the application of these results for obtaining gaugino condensation in chiral D-brane models. Finally, we embed our constructions in the framework of flux compactification, and construct new classes of N=1 and N=0 chiral flux vacua.

Model Building and Phenomenology of Flux-Induced Supersymmetry Breaking on D3-branes

We study supersymmetry breaking effects induced on D3-branes at singularities by the presence of NSNS and RR 3-form fluxes. First, we discuss some local constructions of chiral models from D3-branes at singularities, as well as their global embedding in flux compactifications. The low energy spectrum of these constructions contains features of the supersymmetric Standard Model. In these models, both the soft SUSY parameters and the mu-term are generated by turning on the 3-form NSNS and RR fluxes. We then explore some model-independent phenomenological features as, e.g., the fine-tuning problem of electroweak symmetry breaking in flux compactifications. We also comment on other phenomenological features of this scenario.

MSSM vacua from Flux Compactifications

We construct the first D = 4 Minkowski string theory vacua of flux compactification which are (i) chiral, (ii) free of NSNS and RR tadpoles, and (iii) N = 1 or N = 0 supersymmetric. In the latter case SUSY is softly broken by the fluxes, with soft terms being generated in the gauge and chiral sectors of the theory. In addition, the low energy spectrum of the theory is MSSM-like, the dilaton/complex structure moduli are stabilized and the supergravity background involves a warped metric.

Intersecting D-brane Models

This thesis is devoted to the study of a class of constructions based on Superstring Theory, baptized in the literature as Intersecting Brane Worlds. In particular we explore several issues regarding the proposal of Intersecting Brane Worlds as string-based models yielding semi-realistic low-energy physics. We find that they provide an interesting framework where, for instance, just the Standard Model chiral content and gauge group can be obtained. Although many of the results presented in this work are valid for more general constructions, we center on configurations of D-branes intersecting at angles. We construct several classes of such compactifications which may yield realistic D=4 physics. We build several explicit examples giving the Standard Model chiral spectrum, and then proceed to analyze some of the related phenomenology. We pay special attention to features such as the structure of U(1) global symmetries, the absence of open-string tachyons, the appearance of light extra matter and the possibility of lowering the string scale in such scenarios. Finally, we investigate the relationship between low-energy field theory quantities, such as FI-parameters and Yukawa couplings, with the geometrical objects underlying the string construction. We find that their description is closely related to calibration theory and to the construction of Fukaya's category.
