A liquid crystal analogue of the cosmic string

We consider the propagation of light in a anisotropic medium with a topological line defect in the realm of geometrical optics. It is shown that the effective geometry perceived by light propagating in such medium is that of a spacial section of the cosmic string spacetime.

Bound states in the dynamics of a dipole in the presence of a conical defect

In this work we investigate the quantum dynamics of an electric dipole in a $(2+1)$-dimensional conical spacetime. For specific conditions, the Schrödinger equation is solved and bound states are found with the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions determined. We find that the bound states spectrum extends from minus infinity to zero with a point of accumulation at zero. This unphysical result is fixed when a finite radius for the defect is introduced.

The self-energy of a charged particle in the presence of a topological defect distribution

In this work we study a charged particle in the presence of both a continuous distribution of disclinations and a continuous distribution of edge dislocations in the framework of the geometrical theory of defects. We obtain the self-energy for a single charge both in the internal and external regions of either distribution. For both distributions the result outside the defect distribution is the self-energy that a single charge experiments in the presence of a single defect.

Loop variables in the geometry of a rotating black string

In this paper we analyze in the Wilson loop context the parallel transport of vectors and spinors around a closed loop in the background space-time of a rotating black string in order to classify its global properties. We also examine particular closed orbits in this space-time and verify the Mandelstam relations.

Solid State Analog for He-McKellar-Wilkens Quantum Phase

In this letter we investigate the quantum dynamics of a quasiparticle in the presence of a charged screw dislocation submitted to a uniform magnetic field. Analysing the quantum scattering for this quasiparticle we observed the appearance of a topological quantum phase in the solution and demonstrate that this phenomenon is the solid state analog of the He-McKeller-Wilkens effect.

Landau Levels in the Presence of Topological Defects

We study the Landau levels associated with electrons moving in a magnetic field in the presence of a continuous distribution of disclinations, a magnetic screw dislocation and a dispiration. We focus on the influence of these topological defects on the spectrum of the electron(or hole) in a magnetic field in the framework of the geometric theory of defects in solids of Katanaev and Volovich. The presence of the defects breaks the degeneracy of the Landau levels in different ways depending on the defect. Exact expressions for energies and eigenfuctions are found for all cases.

Gravity-driven instability in a spherical Hele-Shaw cell

A pair of concentric spheres separated by a small gap form a spherical Hele-Shaw cell. In this cell an interfacial instability arises when two immiscible fluids flow. We derive the equation of motion for the interface perturbation amplitudes, including both pressure and gravity drivings, using a mode coupling approach. Linear stability analysis shows that mode growth rates depend upon interface perimeter and gravitational force. Mode coupling analysis reveals the formation of fingering structures presenting a tendency toward finger tip-sharpening.

Geodesics around line defects in elastic solids

Topological defects in solids, usually described by complicated boundary conditions in elastic theory, may be described more simply as sources of a gravity- like deformation field in the geometric approach of Katanaev and Volovich. This way, the deformation field is described by non-Euclidean metric that incorporates the boundary imposed by the defects. A possible way of gaining some insight into the motion of particles in a medium with topological defects (e.g., electrons in a dislocated metal) is to look at the geodesics of the medium around the defect. In this work, we find the exact solution for the geodesic equation for elastic medium with a generic line defect, the dispiration, that can either be a screw dislocation or a wedge disclination for particular choices of its parameters.

Charge localization around disclinations in monolayer graphite

Using a continuum model, we obtain qualitative results that imply charge localization around negative curvature disclinations (i.e. rings with more than 6 Carbon atoms) in a graphite sheet. Conversely, it is found that positive curvature disclinations repel charge, independent of its sign.

Casimir effect around a screw dislocation

In this work, it is shown that a non-zero vacuum energy density (the Casimir energy) for a scalar field appears in a continuous elastic solid due to the presence of a topological defect, the screw dislocation. An exact expression is obtained for this energy density in terms of the Burgers vector describing the defect, for zero and finite temperature.

The partition function of the unit interval

We outline a method of calculation of partition functions of orientable manifolds with fluctuating metric and perform the calculation for the specific case of the unit interval.

Electrostatic self-force in (2+1)-dimensional cosmological gravity

Point sources in (2+1)-dimensional gravity are conical singularities that modify the global curvature of the space giving rise to self-interaction effects on classical fields. In this work we study the electrostatic self-interaction of a point charge in the presence of point masses in (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a cosmological constant.

On the geometry and conformation of starburst dendrimers

In this work, we propose a geometrical model for the study of conformational properties of a starburst dendrimer with the topology of a truncated Bethe lattice. A convenient embedding of the Bethe lattice in the hyperbolic plane is used to study the architecture of the dendrimer. As results, we find an upper bound for the molecular size and the density profile.

Geodesics around a dislocation

One method of gaining some insight into the motion of particles in a medium with topological defects (e.g., electrons in a dislocated metal) is to look at the geodesics of the medium around the defect. In this work the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the geodesics in a continuous medium containing a torsional defect, an edge dislocation, is solved by using perturbation theory to first order in the Burgers vector.

Casimir effect around disclinations

This communication concerns the structure of the electromagnetic quantum vacuum in a disclinated insulator. It is shown that a nonzero vacuum energy density appears when the rotational symmetry of a continuous insulating elastic medium is broken by a disclination. An explicit expression is given for this Casimir energy density in terms of the parameter describing the disclination.
