Fractional very fast diffusion equations in Lebesgue spaces: uniqueness and smoothing effects

We investigate forward and backward smoothing effects in Lebesgue spaces $L^p$ and $\mathcal{M}^p:=L^{p,\infty}$ for the Cauchy problem associated to the nonlinear and nonlocal fractional diffusion equation $\partial_t u+(-Δ)^{\frac\sigma2}|u|^{m-1}u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $0<σ<2$, in the very fast range $0 p^*:=\frac{N}σ(1-m)$, and we construct counterexamples showing the failure of any $L^p$--$\mathcal{M}^q$ forward ($q>p$) smoothing effect if $1< p< p^*$, $m 1$) if $m=m_c$. We also prove a backward $\mathcal{M}^p$--$L^1$ smoothing effect whenever $1\le p p^*$. Regarding the threshold value $p=p^*$, we prove that all solutions starting in $\mathcal{M}^{p^*}$ become extinct in finite time, and show the failure of any $\mathcal{M}^{p^*}$--$\mathcal{M}^q$ smoothing before extinction for any $q\neq p^*$. The construction of counterexamples is based on new uniqueness and comparison results for very weak solutions, combined with the existence of self-similar solutions with suitable properties. The same approach yields new counterexamples for both forward and backward smoothing effects also in the local case $σ=2$.

Traveling-wave behavior for Fisher-KPP equations in the hyperbolic space

We study the Cauchy problem in the hyperbolic space for the heat equation with a Fisher-KPP type forcing term. Depending on the relative strength of diffusion, measured by the infimum of the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, as compared to the growth due to the forcing term, solutions may propagate or vanish as time passes. We prove new results concerning this dichotomy that include the critical case where diffusion and reaction are of the same order. If the initial datum possesses some symmetry (invariance under a cohomogeneity one subgroup of the group of isometries of the hyperbolic space), the problem reduces to a unidimensional one. In the case of propagation, the solution to this unidimensional problem converges in shape to an Euclidean traveling wave of minimal speed in an appropriate moving frame. The choice of this frame depends on the subgroup of isometries (elliptic, hyperbolic or parabolic) under which the initial datum is invariant. In contrast with the Euclidean case, the asymptotic spreading speed (in due coordinates) depends on the dimension, while the coefficient of the logarithmic correction in the location of the front does not, no matter the underlying isometry.

Gradual smoothing: strong hypercontractivity and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities

We study the possibility of a gradual improvement as time progresses of the regularity of solutions to evolution problems of parabolic type driven by Lévy-type operators, not necessarily translation invariant. In the course of our analysis we study the equivalence between general smoothing effects and a family of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. This equivalence allows us to identify a new type of regularization, strong hypercontractivity, characterized by the existence of a time at which solutions belong to every $L^p$ space with $p$ finite. It can also be used to prove logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in a context not previously seen in the literature. We then show that any purely nonlocal Lévy-type operator whose kernel is comparable to that of $\log(I-Δ)$ is strongly hypercontractive, but fails to be supercontractive and, consequently, also fails to be ultracontractive. Furthermore, in the translation-invariant case, we also prove that solutions get bounded eventually and start improving in differentiability right after doing so. Finally, we show that this behaviour only appears if the kernel defining the operator behaves as $|x-y|^{-N}$ for small interactions ($0^+$-order operators): more singular kernels yield instantaneous smoothing, while less singular ones do not produce any regularization.

On the nonlocal heat equation for certain Lévy operators and the uniqueness of positive solutions

We develop a Widder-type theory for nonlocal heat equations involving quite general Lévy operators. Thus, we consider nonnegative solutions and look for conditions on the operator that ensure: (i) uniqueness of nonnegative classical and very weak solutions with a given initial trace; (ii) the existence of an initial trace, belonging to certain admissibility class; and (iii) the existence of a solution, given by a representation formula, for any admissible initial trace. Such results are obtained first for purely nonlocal Lévy operators defined through positive symmetric Lévy kernels comparable to radial functions with mixed polynomial growth, and then extended to more general operators, including anisotropic ones and operators that have both a local and a nonlocal part.

Large-time estimates for the Dirichlet heat equation in exterior domains

We give large-time asymptotic estimates, both in uniform and $L^1$ norms, for solutions of the Dirichlet heat equation in the complement of a bounded open set of $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying certain technical assumptions. We always assume that the initial datum has suitable finite moments (often, finite first moment). All estimates include an explicit rate of approach to the asymptotic profiles at the different scales natural to the problem, in analogy with the Gaussian behaviour of the heat equation in the full space. As a consequence we obtain by an approximation procedure the asymptotic profile, with rates, for the Dirichlet heat kernel in these exterior domains. The estimates on the rates are new even when the domain is the complement of the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^d$, except for previous results by Uchiyama in dimension 2, which we are able to improve in some scales. We obtain that the heat kernel behaves asymptotically as the heat kernel in the full space, with a factor that takes into account the shape of the domain through a harmonic profile, and a second factor which accounts for the loss of mass through the boundary. The main ideas we use come from entropy methods in PDE and probability, whose application seems to be new in the context of diffusion problems in exterior domains.

A semilinear problem associated to the space-time fractional heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$

We study the fully nonlocal semilinear equation $\partial_t^αu+(-Δ)^βu=|u|^{p-1}u$, $p\ge1$, where $\partial_t^α$ stands for the Caputo derivative of order $α\in (0,1)$ and $(-Δ)^β$, $β\in(0,1]$, is the usual $β$ power of the Laplacian. We prescribe an initial datum in $L^q(\mathbb{R}^N)$. We give conditions ensuring the existence and uniqueness of a solution living in $L^q(\mathbb{R}^N)$ up to a maximal existence time $T$ that may be finite or infinite. If~$T$ is finite, the $L^q$ norm of the solution becomes unbounded as time approaches $T$, and $u$ is said to blow up in $L^q$. Otherwise, the solution is global in time. For the case of nonnegative and nontrivial solutions, we give conditions on the initial datum that ensure either blow-up or global existence. It turns out that every nonnegative nontrivial solution in $L^q$ blows up in finite time if $1<p<p_f:=1+\frac{2β}N$ whereas if $p\ge p_f$ there are both solutions that blow up and global ones. The critical exponent $p_f$, which does not depend on $α$, coincides with the Fujita exponent for the case $α=1$, in which the time derivative is the standard (local) one. In contrast to the case $α=1$, when $α\in(0,1)$ the critical exponent $p=p_f$ falls within the situation in which global existence may occur. Our weakest condition for global existence and our condition for blow-up are both related to the size of the mean value of the initial datum in large balls.

An inhomogeneous porous medium equation with non-integrable data: asymptotics

We investigate the asymptotic behavior as $t\to+\infty$ of solutions to a weighted porous medium equation in $ \mathbb{R}^N $, whose weight $ρ(x)$ behaves at spatial infinity like $ |x|^{-γ} $ with subcritical power, namely $ γ\in [0,2) $. Inspired by some results by Alikakos-Rostamian and Kamin-Ughi from the 1980s on the unweighted problem, we focus on solutions whose initial data $u_0(x)$ are not globally integrable with respect to the weight and behave at infinity like $ |x|^{-α} $, for $α\in(0,N-γ)$. In the special case $ ρ(x)=|x|^{-γ} $ and $ u_0(x)=|x|^{-α} $ we show that self-similar solutions of Barenblatt type, i.e. reminiscent of the usual source-type solutions, still exist, although they are no longer compactly supported. Moreover, they exhibit a transition phenomenon which is new even for the unweighted equation. We prove that such self-similar solutions are attractors for the original problem, and convergence takes place globally in suitable weighted $ L^p $ spaces for $p\in[1,\infty)$ and even globally in $L^\infty$ under some mild additional regularity assumptions on the weight. Among the fundamental tools that we exploit, it is worth mentioning a global smoothing effect for non-integrable data.

Positivity and asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a generalized nonlocal fast diffusion equation

We study the positivity and asymptotic behaviour of nonnegative solutions of a general nonlocal fast diffusion equation, \[\partial_t u + \mathcal{L}φ(u) = 0,\] and the interplay between these two properties. Here $\mathcal{L}$ is a stable-like operator and $φ$ is a singular nonlinearity. We start by analysing positivity by means of a weak Harnack inequality satisfied by a related elliptic (nonlocal) equation. Then we use this positivity to establish the asymptotic behaviour: under certain hypotheses on the nonlocal operator and nonlinearity, our solutions behave asymptotically as the Barenblatt solution of the standard fractional fast diffusion equation. The main difficulty stems from the generality of the operator, which does not allow the use of the methods that were available for the fractional Laplacian. Our results are new even in the case where $φ$ is a power.

Large-time behaviour for anisotropic stable nonlocal diffusion problems with convection

We study the large-time behaviour of nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for a nonlocal heat equation with a nonlinear convection term. The diffusion operator is the infinitesimal generator of a stable Lévy process, which may be highly anisotropic. The initial data are assumed to be bounded and integrable. The mass of the solution is conserved along the evolution, and the large-time behaviour is given by the source-type solution with this mass of a limit equation that depends on the relative strength of convection and diffusion. When diffusion is stronger than convection the original equation simplifies asymptotically to the purely diffusive nonlocal heat equation. When convection dominates, it does so only in the direction of convection, and the limit equation is still diffusive in the subspace orthogonal to this direction, with a diffusion operator that is a ``projection'' of the original one onto the subspace. The determination of this projection is one of the main issues of the paper. When convection and diffusion are of the same order the limit equation coincides with the original one. Most of our results are new even in the isotropic case in which the diffusion operator is the fractional Laplacian. We are able to cover both the cases of slow and fast convection, as long as the mass is preserved. Fast convection, which corresponds to convection nonlinearities that are not locally Lipschitz, but only locally Hölder, has not been considered before in the nonlocal diffusion setting.

Heat equations with fast convection: source-type solutions and large-time behaviour

We study the existence and uniqueness of source-type solutions to the Cauchy problem for the heat equation with fast convection under certain tail control assumptions. We allow the solutions to change sign, but we will in fact show that they have the same sign as the initial data, which is a multiple of the Dirac delta. As an application, we obtain the large-time behaviour of nonnegative bounded solutions with integrable initial data to heat equations with fast convection, covering the case of several dimensions that remained open since the end of last century.

Asymptotic profiles for inhomogeneous heat equations with memory

We study the large-time behavior in all $L^p$ norms of solutions to an inhomogeneous nonlocal heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ involving a Caputo $α$-time derivative and a power $β$ of the Laplacian when the dimension is large, $N> 4β$. The asymptotic profiles depend strongly on the space-time scale and on the time behavior of the spatial $L^1$ norm of the forcing term.

Decay/growth rates for inhomogeneous heat equations with memory. The case of small dimensions

We study the decay/growth rates in all $L^p$ norms of solutions to an inhomogeneous nonlocal heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ involving a Caputo $α$-time derivative and a power $β$ of the Laplacian when the spatial dimension is small, $1\le N\le 4β$, thus completing the already available results for large spatial dimensions. Rates depend not only on $p$, but also on the space-time scale and on the time behavior of the spatial $L^1$ norm of the forcing term.

Convergence in relative error for the Porous Medium equation in a tube

Given a bounded domain $D \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ and $m > 1$, we study the long-time behaviour of solutions to the Porous Medium equation (PME) posed in a tube \[ \partial_tu = Δu^m \quad \text{ in } D \times \mathbb{R}, \quad t > 0, \] with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary $\partial D \times \mathbb{R}$ and suitable initial datum at $t=0$. In two previous works, Vázquez and Gilding & Goncerzewicz proved that a wide class of solutions exhibit a traveling wave behaviour, when computed at a logarithmic time-scale and suitably renormalized. In this paper, we show that, for large times, solutions converge in relative error to the Friendly Giant, i.e., the unique nonnegative solution to the PME posed in the section $D$ of the tube (with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions) having a special self-similar form. In addition, sharp rates of convergence and uniform bounds for the location of the free boundary of solutions are given.

Large-time behavior for a fully nonlocal heat equation

We study the large-time behavior in all $L^p$ norms and in different space-time scales of solutions to a nonlocal heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ involving a Caputo $α$-time derivative and a power of the Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, $s\in (0,1)$, extending recent results by the authors for the case $s=1$. The initial data are assumed to be integrable, and, when required, to be also in $L^p$. The main novelty with respect to the case $s=1$ comes from the behaviour in fast scales, for which, thanks to the fat tails of the fundamental solution of the equation, we are able to give results that are not available neither for the case $s=1$ nor, to our knowledge, for the standard heat equation, $s=1$, $α=1$.

Limits on the Electromagnetic Counterpart to S190814bv

We derive limits on any electromagnetic counterpart to the compact binary merger S190814bv, whose parameters are consistent with the merger of a black hole and a neutron star. We present observations with the new wide-field optical imager DDOTI and also consider Swift/BAT observations reported by Palmer et al. (2019). We show that Swift/BAT would have detected a counterpart with similar properties to a typical on-axis short GRB at the 98 per cent confidence level, whereas our DDOTI observations only rule out such a counterpart at the 27 per cent confidence level. Neither have sufficient sensitivity to rule out an off-axis counterpart like GW 170817. We compare the efficiency of Swift/BAT and DDOTI for future observations, and show that DDOTI is likely to be about twice as efficient as Swift/BAT for off-axis events up to about 100 Mpc.
