Wave physics as a choreographic notation for partner dance

The wave is considered a paradigm in dance and connects bodily expression with nature. Although wave concepts such as propagation and phase have proven to be powerful tools for dance analysis, many aspects of bodily expression, including partner dance, have been investigated using numerical approaches and neural networks. Complementarily, compact analytical models have been especially successful for describing human motion, particularly gait. Here, we show that expressive-motion trajectories in partner dance can be reconstructed using physically interpretable analytical wave and oscillator models. We apply this framework to Bachata Sensual, a dance style in which the wave is the leitmotif. We analyse three couples (Phase I) performing five fundamental sequences and one composite. The sequences exhibit multiple wave-related phenomena, including time-dependent interference and harmonic-like modal relations. As an illustrative acoustic analogy, coupled modes with a frequency ratio remarkably close to 3:1, analogous to a harmonic relation, can be mapped to audible frequencies, forming musical dyads. Not rigidly constrained by body morphology, modal response can be tuned to underpin fluid motion, adapting across musical timescales and movement patterns. Overall, within this wave-physics perspective, the formalism can be viewed as a choreographic motion notation highlighting connections between partner-dance expressivity and harmonic nature.

Thermal emission of hydrogenated amorphous silicon microspheres in the mid-infrared

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon microspheres feature a pronounced phononic peak around 2000 cm-1 when they are thermally excited by means of a blue laser. This phononic signature corresponds to vibrational modes of silicon-hydrogen bonds and its emitted light can be coupled to Mie modes defined by the spherical cavity. The signal is apparently quite stable at moderate excitation intensities although there appeared some signs pointing to hydrides bonds reconfiguration and even hydrogen emission. Above a certain excitation threshold, a phase change from amorphous to poly-crystalline silicon occurs that preserves the good structural quality of the microspheres.

The neuron as a temporal electroacoustic medium

The human brain is one of the most complex and intriguing scientific topics. The most established theory on neuronal communication is a pure electrical model based on the propagation of intracell cationic charges along the neurons. Here we propose a complementary model based on two properties of brain communication: A) The Coulomb interaction associated to the Action Potential (AP) pulse induces a deformation of the neuron membrane which travels as an acoustic signal, i.e.: The ions play an essential role and the electric and acoustic signals, composing the AP, are strongly correlated. B) As brain communication is stablished through a periodic train of AP pulses it induces a time periodic modulation of the acoustic parameters. In this framework we propose envisaging the neuron as a temporal electro-acoustic medium. The temporal varying media framework could help understanding brain conundrums such as propagation routes involved in the neuronal plasticity in the consolidation of the memory, as well as on the generation of the signals associated to the brain field theory.

Monolayer-to-mesoscale modulation of the optical properties in 2D CrI3 mapped by hyperspectral microscopy

Magnetic 2D materials hold promise to change the miniaturization paradigm of unidirectional photonic components. However, the integration of these materials in devices hinges on the accurate determination of the optical properties down to the monolayer limit, which is still missing. By using hyperspectral wide-field imaging we reveal a non-monotonic thickness dependence of the complex optical dielectric function in the archetypal magnetic 2D material CrI3 extending across different length scales: onsetting at the mesoscale, peaking at the nanoscale and decreasing again down to the single layer. These results portray a modification of the electronic properties of the material and align with the layer-dependent magnetism in CrI3, shedding light into the long-standing structural conundrum in this material. The unique modulation of the complex dielectric function from the monolayer up to more than 100 layers will be instrumental for understanding and manipulating the magneto-optical effects of magnetic 2D materials.

Role of edge inclination in optical microdisk resonator for label-free sensing

In this paper we report on the measurement and modelling of enhanced optical refractometric sensors based on whispering-gallery-modes. The devices under test are optical microresonators made of silicon nitride on silicon oxide. In our approach, these microresonators are vertically coupled to a buried waveguide with the aim of creating integrated and cost-effective devices. The optimization analysis is a delicate balance of resonance quality factor and evanescent field overlap with the sorrounding environment to analyze. By numerical simulations we show that the microdisk thickness is critical to yield high figure of merit for the sensor, while edge inclination is less important. We also show that figures of merit as high as 1600/RIU are feasible.

Packing Confined Hard Spheres Denser with Adaptive Prism Phases

We show that hard spheres confined between two parallel hard plates pack denser with periodic adaptive prismatic structures which are composed of alternating prisms of spheres. The internal structure of the prisms adapts to the slit height which results in close packings for a range of plate separations, just above the distance where three intersecting square layers fit exactly between the plates. The adaptive prism phases are also observed in real-space experiments on confined sterically stabilized colloids and in Monte Carlo simulations at finite pressure.
