Three-particle scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD

Lattice QCD already offers the possibility of extracting three-hadron scattering quantities from first principles. In the last few years, significant progress has been achieved in developing and applying the finite-volume three-body formalism. The formalism is now able to treat physically relevant systems of three mesons, including those with resonances, as well as three-body decays. In this talk, I will review the state of the art, and comment on recent applications to lattice QCD data for systems of three pions and kaons.

Scattering from generalised lattice $ϕ^4$ theory

We investigate numerically different techniques to extract scattering amplitudes from the Euclidean Lattice ϕ4 theory with two fields, having different masses. We present an exploratory study of the recently proposed method by Bruno and Hansen for extracting the scattering length from a four-point function (cf 10.1007/JHEP06(2021)043), and a study of the two- and three-particle quantization condition.

Improved topological sampling for lattice gauge theories

Standard sampling algorithms for lattice QCD suffer from topology freezing (or critical slowing down) when approaching the continuum limit, thus leading to poor sampling of the distinct topological sectors. I will present a modified Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm that triggers topological sector jumps during the assembly of Markov chain of lattice configurations. We study its performance in the 2D Schwinger model and compare it to alternative methods, such as fixing topology or master field. We then briefly discuss the difficulties of the algorithm in a SU(2) gauge model in 4D.

$ππ$ scattering at Large $N_\text{c}$

We study the Large $N_\text{c}$ scaling of pion-pion scattering amplitudes for $N_\text{f}=4$ degenerate quark flavors. We focus on the standard isospin-2 channel and the adjoint-antisymmetric (AA) representation. The latter only exists for $N_\text{f}\geq 4$ and a representative state is $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(|D_s^+π^+\rangle-|D^+ K^+\rangle)$. We compare the results obtained for two regularizations (Wilson and twisted-mass fermions) and three values of the lattice spacing, and observe significant discretization effects in the AA channel. Finally, we match our results to NLO SU(4) and NNLO U(4) Chiral Perturbation Theory and constrain the $N_\text{c}$ scaling of the relevant low-energy couplings.

Interactions of two and three mesons including higher partial waves from lattice QCD

We study two- and three-meson systems composed either of pions or kaons at maximal isospin using Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD. Utilizing the stochastic LapH method, we are able to determine hundreds of two- and three-particle energy levels, in nine different momentum frames, with high precision. We fit these levels using the relativistic finite-volume formalism based on a generic effective field theory in order to determine the parameters of the two- and three-particle K-matrices. We find that the statistical precision of our spectra is sufficient to probe not only the dominant $s$-wave interactions, but also those in $d$ waves. In particular, we determine for the first time a term in the three-particle K-matrix that contains two-particle $d$ waves. We use three $N_f=2+1$ CLS ensembles with pion masses of $200$, $280$, and $340\;$MeV. This allows us to study the chiral dependence of the scattering observables, and compare to the expectations of chiral perturbation theory.

Kaon decays and other hadronic processes in lattice QCD

This thesis deals with the study of properties and interactions of light mesons. Specifically, we focus on hadronic decay and scattering processes, which are dominated by effects of the strong interaction in the low-energy regime. A peculiarity of the strong interaction is that perturbative expansions fail at hadronic energy scales. Thus, genuine nonperturbative tools are essential to obtain first-principles predictions. Here we use Lattice Field Theory, and Effective Field Theories. The mathematical formulation of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and the methods to resolve its dynamics will be addressed in Chapter 1. The research of this dissertation is divided in two parts. Chapter 2 describes our study of the 't Hooft limit of QCD using lattice simulations, while in Chapter 3 we consider processes that involve multiparticle states. The 't Hooft limit provides a simplification of nonabelian gauge theories that leads to nonperturbative predictions. We will analyze the scaling with the number of colours of various observables, such as meson masses, decay constants and weak matrix elements. A question we address is the origin of the long-standing puzzle of the $ΔI=1/2$ rule, that is, the large hierarchy in the isospin amplitudes of the $K \to ππ$ weak decay. Regarding multiparticle processes, we will discuss generalizations of the Lüscher formalism to explore three-particle processes from lattice simulations. The focus will be on our contributions, such as our implementation of the finite-volume formalism that includes higher partial waves, and the first application of the formalism to a full lattice QCD spectrum. We will also comment on the extension of the approach to generic three-pion systems. A summary in Spanish will be given in Chapter 4. The final part of the thesis (Part II) includes the peer-reviewed publications in their original published form.

Testing a new method for scattering in finite volume in the $ϕ^4$ theory

We test an alternative proposal by Bruno and Hansen [1] to extract the scattering length from lattice simulations in a finite volume. For this, we use a scalar $ϕ^4$ theory with two mass nondegenerate particles and explore various strategies to implement this new method. We find that the results are comparable to those obtained from the Lüscher method, with somewhat smaller statistical uncertainties at larger volumes.

Scattering of two and three physical pions at maximal isospin from lattice QCD

We present the first direct $N_f=2$ lattice QCD computation of two- and three-$π^+$ scattering quantities that includes an ensemble at the physical point. We study the quark mass dependence of the two-pion phase shift, and the three-particle interaction parameters. We also compare to phenomenology and chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). In the two-particle sector, we observe good agreement to the phenomenological fits in $s$- and $d$-wave, and obtain $M_πa_0 = -0.0481(86)$ at the physical point from a direct computation. In the three-particle sector, we observe reasonable agreement at threshold to the leading order chiral expansion, i.e.\@ a mildly attractive three-particle contact term. In contrast, we observe that the energy-dependent part of the three-particle quasilocal scattering quantity is not well described by leading order ChPT.

Decay amplitudes to three hadrons from finite-volume matrix elements

We derive relations between finite-volume matrix elements and infinite-volume decay amplitudes, for processes with three spinless, degenerate and either identical or non-identical particles in the final state. This generalizes the Lellouch-Lüscher relation for two-particle decays and provides a strategy for extracting three-hadron decay amplitudes using lattice QCD. Unlike for two particles, even in the simplest approximation, one must solve integral equations to obtain the physical decay amplitude, a consequence of the nontrivial finite-state interactions. We first derive the result in a simplified theory with three identical particles, and then present the generalizations needed to study phenomenologically relevant three-pion decays. The specific processes we discuss are the CP-violating $K \to 3π$ weak decay, the isospin-breaking $η\to 3π$ QCD transition, and the electromagnetic $γ^*\to 3π$ amplitudes that enter the calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muonic $g-2$.

$I = 3$ three-pion scattering amplitude from lattice QCD

We analyze the spectrum of two- and three-pion states of maximal isospin obtained recently for isosymmetric QCD with pion mass $M\approx 200\;$MeV in Ref. [1]. Using the relativistic three-particle quantization condition, we find $\sim 2 σ$ evidence for a nonzero value for the contact part of the three-$π^+$ ($I=3$) scattering amplitude. We also compare our results to leading-order chiral perturbation theory. We find good agreement at threshold, and some tension in the energy dependent part of the three-$π^+$scattering amplitude. We also find that the two-$π^+$ ($I=2$) spectrum is fit well by an $s$-wave phase shift that incorporates the expected Adler zero.

Relativistic $N$-particle energy shift in finite volume

We present a general method for deriving the energy shift of an interacting system of $N$ spinless particles in a finite volume. To this end, we use the nonrelativistic effective field theory (NREFT), and match the pertinent low-energy constants to the scattering amplitudes. Relativistic corrections are explicitly included up to a given order in the $1/L$ expansion. We apply this method to obtain the ground state of $N$ particles, and the first excited state of two and three particles to order $L^{-6}$ in terms of the threshold parameters of the two- and three-particle relativistic scattering amplitudes. We use these expressions to analyze the $N$-particle ground state energy shift in the complex $φ^4$ theory.

The Large $N_c$ limit of QCD on the lattice

We review recent progress in the study of the large $N_c$ limit of gauge theories from lattice simulations. The focus is not only the planar limit but also the size of ${\mathcal O}(N_c^{-1})$ corrections for values of $N_c\gtrsim 3$. Some concrete examples of the topics we include are tests of large-$N_c$ factorization, the topological susceptibility, the glueball, meson and baryon spectra, the chiral dependence of masses and decay constants, and weak matrix elements related to the $ΔI=1/2$ rule in kaon decays.

Generalizing the relativistic quantization condition to include all three-pion isospin channels

We present a generalization of the relativistic, finite-volume, three-particle quantization condition for non-identical pions in isosymmetric QCD. The resulting formalism allows one to use discrete finite-volume energies, determined using lattice QCD, to constrain scattering amplitudes for all possible values of two- and three-pion isospin. As for the case of identical pions considered previously, the result splits into two steps: The first defines a non-perturbative function with roots equal to the allowed energies, $E_n(L)$, in a given cubic volume with side-length $L$. This function depends on an intermediate three-body quantity, denoted $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$, which can thus be constrained from lattice QCD input. The second step is a set of integral equations relating $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$ to the physical scattering amplitude, $\mathcal M_3$. Both of the key relations, $E_n(L) \leftrightarrow \mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$ and $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}\leftrightarrow \mathcal M_3$, are shown to be block-diagonal in the basis of definite three-pion isospin, $I_{πππ}$, so that one in fact recovers four independent relations, corresponding to $I_{πππ}=0,1,2,3$. We also provide the generalized threshold expansion of $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df},3}$ for all channels, as well as parameterizations for all three-pion resonances present for $I_{πππ}=0$ and $I_{πππ}=1$. As an example of the utility of the generalized formalism, we present a toy implementation of the quantization condition for $I_{πππ}=0$, focusing on the quantum numbers of the $ω$ and $h_1$ resonances.

Dissecting the $ΔI= 1/2$ rule at large $N_c$

We study the scaling of kaon decay amplitudes with the number of colours, $N_c$, in a theory with four degenerate flavours, $N_f=4$. In this scenario, two current-current operators, $Q^\pm$, mediate $ΔS=1$ transitions, such as the two isospin amplitudes of non-leptonic kaon decays for $K\to (ππ)_{I=0,2}$, $A_0$ and $A_2$. In particular, we concentrate on the simpler $K\toπ$ amplitudes, $A^\pm$, mediated by these two operators. A diagrammatic analysis of the large-$N_c$ scaling of these observables is presented, which demonstrates the anticorrelation of the leading ${\mathcal O}(1/N_c)$ and ${\mathcal O}(N_f/N_c^2)$ corrections in both amplitudes. Using our new $N_f=4$ and previous quenched data, we confirm this expectation and show that these corrections are $naturally$ large and may be at the origin of the $ΔI=1/2$ rule. The evidence for the latter is indirect, based on the matching of the amplitudes to their prediction in Chiral Perturbation Theory, from which the LO low-energy couplings of the chiral weak Hamiltonian, $g^\pm$, can be determined. A NLO estimate of the $K \to (ππ)_{I=0,2}$ isospin amplitudes can then be derived, which is in good agreement with the experimental value.

Meson interactions at large $N_c$ from Lattice QCD

We report on the computation of the scaling of QCD observables with the number of colours, $N_c$. For this, we use dynamical configurations with four active flavours, $N_f=4$, and values of $N_c=3-6$. We study the meson masses and decay constants, and compute the leading and subleading contributions to the Low Energy Constants (LECs) of the chiral Lagrangian. We also explore $ππ$ scattering in the $I=2$ channel, and compute the $K \to π$ weak decay matrix elements. We comment on the relation of the latter to $K \to ππ$ processes and the $ΔI=1/2$ rule.

Large $N_c$ scaling of meson masses and decay constants

We perform an $\textit{ab initio}$ calculation of the $N_c$ scaling of the low-energy couplings of the chiral Lagrangian of low-energy strong interactions, extracted from the mass dependence of meson masses and decay constants. We compute these observables on the lattice with four degenerate fermions, $N_f=4$, and varying number of colours, $N_c=3-6$, at a lattice spacing of $a\simeq 0.075$ fm. We find good agreement with the expected $N_c$ scaling and measure the coefficients of the leading and subleading terms in the large $N_c$ expansion. From the subleading $N_c$ corrections, we can also infer the $N_f$ dependence, that we use to extract the value of the low-energy couplings for different values of $N_f$. We find agreement with previous determinations at $N_c=3$ and $N_f=2, 3$ and also, our results support a strong paramagnetic suppression of the chiral condensate in moving from $N_f=2$ to $N_f=3$.

Numerical exploration of three relativistic particles in a finite volume including two-particle resonances and bound states

In this work, we use an extension of the quantization condition, given in Ref. [1], to numerically explore the finite-volume spectrum of three relativistic particles, in the case that two-particle subsets are either resonant or bound. The original form of the relativistic three-particle quantization condition was derived under a technical assumption on the two-particle K matrix that required the absence of two-particle bound states or narrow two-particle resonances. Here we describe how this restriction can be lifted in a simple way using the freedom in the definition of the K-matrix-like quantity that enters the quantization condition. With this in hand, we extend previous numerical studies of the quantization condition to explore the finite-volume signature for a variety of two- and three-particle interactions. We determine the spectrum for parameters such that the system contains both dimers (two-particle bound states) and one or more trimers (in which all three particles are bound), and also for cases where the two-particle subchannel is resonant. We also show how the quantization condition provides a tool for determining infinite-volume dimer-particle scattering amplitudes for energies below the dimer breakup. We illustrate this for a series of examples, including one that parallels physical deuteron-nucleon scattering. All calculations presented here are restricted to the case of three identical scalar particles.

Implementing the three-particle quantization condition including higher partial waves

We present an implementation of the relativistic three-particle quantization condition including both $s$- and $d$-wave two-particle channels. For this, we develop a systematic expansion about threshold of the three-particle divergence-free K matrix, $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df,3}}$, which is a generalization of the effective range expansion of the two-particle K matrix, $\mathcal{K}_2$. Relativistic invariance plays an important role in this expansion. We find that $d$-wave two-particle channels enter first at quadratic order. We explain how to implement the resulting multichannel quantization condition, and present several examples of its application. We derive the leading dependence of the threshold three-particle state on the two-particle $d$-wave scattering amplitude, and use this to test our implementation. We show how strong two-particle $d$-wave interactions can lead to significant effects on the finite-volume three-particle spectrum, including the possibility of a generalized three-particle Efimov-like bound state. We also explore the application to the $3π^+$ system, which is accessible to lattice QCD simulations, where we study the sensitivity of the spectrum to the components of $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df,3}}$. Finally, we investigate the circumstances under which the quantization condition has unphysical solutions.
