Coulomb drag in graphene - boron nitride heterostructures: the effect of virtual phonon exchange

For a system of two spatially separated monoatomic graphene layers encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, we consider the drag effect between charge carriers in the Fermi liquid regime. Commonly, the phenomenon is described in terms of an interlayer Coulomb interaction. We show that if an additional electron - electron interaction via exchange of virtual substrate phonons is included in the model, the predicted drag resistivity is modified considerably at temperatures above 150 K. The anisotropic crystal structure of boron nitride, with strong intralayer and comparatively weak interlayer bonds, is found to play an important role in this effect.

Temperature dependence of the conductivity of graphene on boron nitride

The substrate material of monolayer graphene influences the charge carrier mobility by various mechanisms. At room temperature, the scattering of conduction electrons by phonon modes localized at the substrate surface can severely limit the charge carrier mobility. We here show that for substrates made of the piezoelectric hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), in comparison to the widely used SiO$_2$, this mechanism of remote phonon scattering is --at room temperature-- weaker by almost an order of magnitude, and causes a resistivity of approximately 3\,$Ω$. This makes hBN an excellent candidate material for future graphene based electronic devices operating at room temperature.

Minimal coupling in oscillator models of quantum dissipation

The dissipative harmonic oscillator has two representations. In the first representation the central oscillator couples with its position to an oscillator bath. In the second one it couples with its momentum to the bath. Both representations are related by a unitary transformation. If the central oscillator couples with its position and momentum to two independent baths, no such unitary transformation exists. We discuss two possible models of this type and their physical relevance.

Macroscopic amplification of electroweak effects in molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the possible use of Bose-Einstein condensates of diatomic molecules to measure nuclear spin-dependent parity violation effects, outlining a detection method based on the internal Josephson effect between molecular states of opposite parity. When applied to molecular condensates, the fine experimental control achieved in atomic bosonic Josephson junctions could provide data on anapole moments and neutral weak couplings.

Resonant Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study double-barrier interfaces separating regions of asymptotically subsonic and supersonic flow of Bose condensed atoms. These setups contain at least one black hole sonic horizon from which the analog of Hawking radiation should be generated and emitted against the flow in the subsonic region. Multiple coherent scattering by the double-barrier structure strongly modulates the transmission probability of phonons, rendering it very sensitive to their frequency. As a result, resonant tunneling occurs with high probability within a few narrow frequency intervals. This gives rise to highly non-thermal spectra with sharp peaks. We find that these peaks are mostly associated to decaying resonances and only occasionally to dynamical instabilities. Even at achievable nonzero temperatures, the radiation peaks can be dominated by the spontaneous emission, i.e. enhanced zero-point fluctuations, and not, as often in analog models, by stimulated emission.

Perturbative analysis of coherent quantum ratchets in cold atom systems

We present a perturbative study of the response of cold atoms in an optical lattice to a weak time- and space-asymmetric periodic driving signal. In the noninteracting limit, and for a finite set of resonant frequencies, we show how a coherent, long lasting ratchet current results from the interference between first and second order processes. In those cases, a suitable three-level model can account for the entire dynamics, yielding surprisingly good agreement with numerically exact results for weak and moderately strong driving.

Thermalization dynamics close to a quantum phase transition

We investigate the dissipative dynamics of a quantum critical system in contact with a thermal bath. In analogy with the standard protocol employed to analyze aging, we study the response of a system to a sudden change of the bath temperature. The specific example of the XY model in a transverse magnetic field whose spins are locally coupled to a set of bosonic baths is considered. The peculiar nature of the dynamics is encoded in the correlations developing out of equilibrium. By means of a kinetic equation we analyze the spin-spin correlations and block correlations. We identify some universal features in the out-of-equilibrium dynamics. Two distinct regimes, characterized by different time and length scales, emerge. During the initial transient the dynamics is characterized by the same critical exponents as those of the equilibrium quantum phase transition and resembles the dynamics of thermal phase transitions. At long times equilibrium is reached through the propagation along the chain of a thermal front in a manner similar to the classical Glauber dynamics.

Aspects of quantum cooling in electron and atom systems

Some features of nonadiabatic electron heat pumps are studied and connected to general questions of quantum cooling. Inelastic reflection is shown to contribute to heating if the external driving signal is time-symmetric. The quantum of cooling power, $π^2 k_B^2 T^2/6h$, is shown to be an upper limit to the cooling rate per transport channel in the presence of an arbitrary driving signal. The quantum limit to bulk atom cooling is also discussed. Within the electron tunneling limit, it is shown that electron cooling still occurs if the coherent ac source is replaced by a sufficiently hot thermal bath. A comparison with related refrigeration setups is presented.

Variational approach to the Caldeira-Leggett model

We apply the displaced-oscillator variational ansatz to the Caldeira-Leggett model for a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box described by a tight-binding chain. We focus on the case of an Ohmic environment and study the phase diagram for different chain lengths. At zero temperature there is a phase transition to a localized phase when the number of sites is even. At finite temperature, a transition from a coherent to an incoherent regime is predicted for all the chain lengths considered. Finally, the results are compared to those obtained with numerical techniques.

Quantum frustration of dissipation by a spin bath

We investigate the evolution of a central spin coupled to a spin bath without internal dynamics. We compare the cases where the bath couples to one or two components of the spin. It is found that the central spin dynamics is enhanced in the latter case, which may be interpreted as a frustration of dissipation. However, the quantum purity of the spin decays fast in both scenarios. We conclude that symmetric coupling of the bath to two orthogonal components of the spin inhibits dissipation but not decoherence.

Nonadiabatic electron heat pump

We investigate a mechanism for extracting heat from metallic conductors based on the energy-selective transmission of electrons through a spatially asymmetric resonant structure subject to ac driving. This quantum refrigerator can operate at zero net electronic current as it replaces hot by cold electrons through two energetically symmetric inelastic channels. We present numerical results for a specific heterostructure and discuss general trends. We also explore the conditions under which the cooling rate may approach the ultimate limit given by the quantum of cooling power.

Vortex trapping in suddenly connected Bose-Josephson junctions

We investigate the problem of vortex trapping in cyclically coupled Bose-Josephson junctions. Starting with $N$ independent BECs we couple the condensates through Josephson links and allow the system to reach a stable circulation by adding a dissipative term in our semiclassical equations of motion. The central question we address is what is the probability to trap a vortex with winding number $m$. Our numerical simulations reveal that the final distribution of winding numbers is narrower than the initial distribution of total phases, indicating an increased probability for no-vortex configurations. Further, the nonlinearity of the problem manifests itself in the somewhat counter-intuitive result that it is possible to obtain a non-zero circulation starting with zero total phase around the loop. The final width of the distribution of winding numbers for $N$ sites scales as $λN^α$, where $α=0.47\pm 0.01$ and $λ<0.67$ (value predicted for the initial distribution) indicating a shrinking of the final distribution. The actual value of $λ$ is found to depend on the strength of dissipation.

Dissipative quantum oscillator with two competing heat baths

We study the dissipative dynamics of a harmonic oscillator which couples linearly through its position and its momentum to two independent heat baths at the same temperature. We argue that this model describes a large spin in a ferromagnet. We find that some effects of the two heat baths partially cancel each other. This leads to unexpected features such as underdamped oscillations and long relaxation times in the strong coupling regime. Such a partial frustration of dissipation can be ascribed to the canonically conjugate character of position and momentum. We compare this model to the scenario where a single heat bath couples linearly to both the position and the momentum of the central oscillator. In that case less surprising behavior occurs for strong coupling. The dynamical evolution of the quantum purity for a single and a double wave packet is also investigated.

Transport suppression in heterostructures driven by an ac gate voltage

We explore the possibility of inducing in heterostructures driven by an ac gate voltage the coherent current suppression recently found for nanoscale conductors in oscillating fields. The destruction of current is fairly independent of the transport voltage, but can be controlled by the driving amplitude and frequency. Within a tight-binding approximation, we obtain analytical results for the average current in the presence of driving. These results are compared against an exact numerical treatment based on a transfer-matrix approach.

Divergent beams of nonlocally entangled electrons emitted from hybrid normal-superconducting structures

We propose the use of normal and Andreev resonances in normal-superconducting structures to generate divergent beams of nonlocally entangled electrons. Resonant levels are tuned to selectively transmit electrons with specific values of the perpendicular energy, thus fixing the magnitude of the exit angle. When the normal metal is a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas, the proposed scheme guarantees arbitrarily large spatial separation of the entangled electron beams emitted from a finite interface. We perform a quantitative study of the linear and nonlinear transport properties of some suitable structures, taking into account the large mismatch in effective masses and Fermi wavelengths. Numerical estimates confirm the feasibility of the proposed beam separation method.

Quasiclassical frustration

We study the dissipative properties of a harmonic oscillator subject to two independent heat baths, one of which couples to its position and the other one to its momentum. This model describes a large spin impurity in a ferromagnet. We find that some effects of the two heat baths partially cancel each other. Most notably, oscillations may remain underdamped for arbitrarily strong coupling. This effect is a direct consequence of the mutually conjugate character of position and momentum. For a single dissipative bath coupled linearly to both position and momentum, no underdamped regime is possible for strong coupling. The dynamics of purity loss for one and two wave packets is also investigated.

Electromotive force and internal resistance of an electron pump

We present a scattering theory of the electromotive force and internal resistance of an electron pump. The characterization of the device performance in terms of only two parameters requires the assumption of incoherent multiple scattering within the circuit and complete thermalization among electrons moving in a given direction. The electromotive force is shown to be of the order of the driving frequency in natural units. In an open setup, the electromotive force adds to the voltage difference between reservoirs to drive the current, both facing a contact resistance which is absent in the case of a closed circuit of uniform width.

Chemical-potential standard for atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

When subject to an external time periodic perturbation of frequency $f$, a Josephson-coupled two-state Bose-Einstein condensate responds with a constant chemical potential difference $Δμ=khf$, where $h$ is Planck's constant and $k$ is an integer. We propose an experimental procedure to produce ac-driven atomic Josephson devices that may be used to define a standard of chemical potential. We investigate how to circumvent some of the specific problems derived from the present lack of advanced atom circuit technology. We include the effect of dissipation due to quasiparticles, which is essential to help the system relax towards the exact Shapiro resonance, and set limits to the range of values which the various physical quantities must have in order to achieve a stable and accurate chemical potential difference between the macroscopic condensates.
