Excitation of surface plexciton wave at interface of a metal and a columnar thin film infiltrated with J-aggregate dyes

In this paper, we report theoretical investigation on excitation of surface plexciton wave at interface of a metal and a columnar thin film infiltrated with J-aggregate dyes using transfer matrix method in Kretschmann configuration. The results reveal the regime of the plasmon - exciton interaction can change from weak to strong by tuning structural parameters. We find Rabi splitting energies between 204 -378 meV corresponding to the time period 11-20 fs which includes to the fast energy transfer from surface plasmon polaritons to excitons. The phase speed and propagation length of surface plexcitonic waves were in the range of 0.4 to 0.9c and 0.4 to 6 μm. The time-averaged Poynting vector of surface plexciton waves shows the localization of them at interface of plasmonic and excitonic mediums.

On optical rotation and selective transmission in ambichiral sculptured thin films

The optical rotation and selective transmission spectrum of ambichiral sculptured thin films using transfer matrix method have been calculated. The results of optical modeling showed that optical characteristics ambichiral sculptured thin films are the same as chiral sculptured thin films in lower angular rotations. In higher angular rotations appear two circular Bragg regimes. The primary at shorter wavelengths reflects LCP light and the secondary at longer wavelengths reflects RCP light. The optical properties of ambichiral sculptured thin films with twist and layer defects as spectral holes in circular Bragg regimes have been reported.

Comparative Study Between Dispersive and Non-Dispersive Dielectric Permittivity in Spectral Remittances of Chiral Sculptured Zirconia Thin Films

The transmission and reflection spectra from a right-handed chiral sculptured zirconia thin film are calculated using the piecewise homogeneity approximation method and the Bruggeman homogenization formalism by considering that the propagation of both dispersive and non-dispersive dielectric function occurs for axial and non-axial states. The comparison of spectral results shows that the dispersion of the dielectric function has a considerable effect on the results. In axial excitation of cross-polarized reflectances and co-polarized transmittances the dispersion effect becomes more pronounced at wavelengths further away from the homogenization wavelength. This is also true in case of non-axial excitation of circular transmittances, while there are considerable differences for cross-polarized reflectances where (wavelength) the first Bragg peak occurs. At wavelengths in the vicinity of the homogenization wavelength the dispersion effect of the dielectric function in becomes more significant.

Spectral Remittances of Chiral Sculptured Zirconia Thin Films in Non-axial propagation

The transmission and reflection spectra from a right-handed chiral sculptured zirconia thin film are calculated using the piecewise homogeneity approximation method and the Bruggeman homogenization formalism and considering that the dispersion of dielectric function happens in non-axial propagation state. First and second Bragg peaks were observed in cross-poloraized reflectances and it became clear that increasing the azimutal angle affects the spectra of linearly polarized state significantly. This is opposite to circularly polarized state.

Numerical study of The Remittances of Axially Excited Chiral Sculptured Zirconia Thin Films

The transmission and reflection spectra from a right-handed chiral sculptured zirconia thin film are calculated using the coupled wave theory and the Bruggeman homogenization formalism in conjunction with the experimental data for the relative dielectric constant of zirconia thin film. The dielectric dispersion function effect on these spectra appeared in wavelengths shorter than the Bragg wavelength. In wavelengths larger than the Bragg wavelength, the dispersion of the dielectric function can be ignored. The results achieved in this work are consistent with the experimental data (Wu et al. (2000)). A shift towards shorter wavelengths is observed for the Bragg peak with increasing the void fraction, which is in agreement with the theoretical work of Lakhtakia (2000). Sorge et al. (2006) also found this effect in their experimental results on TiO2 chiral thin films, while they also found that unlike our results the intensity of the reflectance of the Bragg peak decreases with increasing the void fraction. This difference between our theoretical work and Sorge et al. (2006) experimental work can be related to the structural difference between idealized theoretical model for chiral films and that obtained in experimental work. In the latter, as Sorge et al. (2006) have pointed out the experimental films exhibit a large amount of scattering due to the highly complex and non-ideal structure that the individual chiral elements exhibit.
