Localized non-Abelian gauge fields in non-compact extra-dimensions

Dynamical localization of non-Abelian gauge fields in non-compact flat $D$ dimensions is worked out. The localization takes place via a field-dependent gauge kinetic term when a field condenses in a finite region of spacetime. Such a situation typically arises in the presence of topological solitons. We construct four-dimensional low-energy effective Lagrangian up to the quadratic order in a universal manner applicable to any spacetime dimensions. We devise an extension of the $R_ξ$ gauge to separate physical and unphysical modes clearly. Out of the D-dimensional non-Abelian gauge fields, the physical massless modes reside only in the four-dimensional components, whereas they are absent in the extra-dimensional components. The universality of non-Abelian gauge charges holds due to the unbroken four-dimensional gauge invariance. We illustrate our methods with models in $D=5$ (domain walls), in $D=6$ (vortices), and in $D=7$.

Grand Unified Brane World Scenario

We present a field theoretical model unifying grand unified theory (GUT) and brane world scenario. As a concrete example, we consider $SU(5)$ GUT in 4+1 dimensions where our 3+1 dimensional spacetime spontaneously arises on five domain walls. A field-dependent gauge kinetic term is used to localize massless non-Abelian gauge fields on the domain walls and to assure the charge universality of matter fields. We find the domain walls with the symmetry breaking $SU(5)\to SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ as a global minimum and all the undesirable moduli are stabilized with the mass scale of $M_{\rm GUT}$. Profiles of massless Standard Model particles are determined as a consequence of wall dynamics. The proton decay can be exponentially suppressed.

Non-Abelian Gauge Field Localization on Walls and Geometric Higgs Mechanism

Combining the semi-classical localization mechanism for gauge fields with $N$ domain wall background in a simple $SU(N)$ gauge theory in five space-time dimensions we investigate the geometric Higgs mechanism, where a spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry comes from splitting of domain walls. The mass spectra are investigated in detail for the phenomenologically interesting case $SU(5) \to SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ which is realized on a split configuration of coincident triplet and doublet of domain walls. We derive a low energy effective theory in a generic background using the moduli approximation, where all non-linear interactions between effective fields are captured up to two derivatives. We observe novel similarities between domain walls in our model and D-branes in superstring theories.

BPS Boojums in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories I

We study 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) composite solitons of vortex strings, domain walls and boojums in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions. We obtain solutions to the 1/4 BPS equations with the finite gauge coupling constant. To obtain numerical solutions for generic coupling constants, we construct globally correct approximate functions which allow us to easily find fixed points of gradient flow equations. We analytically/numerically confirm that the negative mass of a single boojum appearingat the endpoint of the vortex string on the logarithmically bent domain wall is equal to the half-mass of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. We examine various configurations and clarify how the shape of the boojum depends on the coupling constants and moduli parameters. We also find analytic solutions to the 1/4 BPS equations for specific values of the coupling constants.

BPS Boojums in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories II

We continue our study of 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) composite solitons of vortex strings, domain walls and boojums in N=2 supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions. In this work, we numerically confirm that a boojum appearing at an end point of a string on a thick domain wall behaves as a magnetic monopole with a fractional charge in three dimensions. We introduce a "magnetic" scalar potential whose gradient gives magnetic fields. Height of the magnetic potential has a geometrical meaning that is shape of the domain wall. We find a semi-local extension of boojum which has an additional size moduli at an end point of a semi-local string on the domain wall. Dyonic solutions are also studied and we numerically confirm that the dyonic domain wall becomes an electric capacitor storing opposite electric charges on its skins. At the same time, the boojum becomes fractional dyon whose charge density is proportional to ${\vec E} \cdot {\vec B}$. We also study dual configurations with an infinite number of boojums and anti-boojums on parallel lines and analyze the ability of domain walls to store magnetic charge as magnetic capacitors. In understanding these phenomena, the magnetic scalar potential plays an important role. We study the composite solitons from the viewpoints of the Nambu-Goto and Dirac-Born-Infeld actions, and find the semi-local BIon as the counterpart of the semi-local Boojum.

Exact BPS domain walls at finite gauge coupling

Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield solitons in models with spontaneously broken gauge symmetry have been intensively studied at infinite gauge coupling limit, where the governing equation -- so-called master equation -- is exactly solvable. Except for a handful of special solutions, the standing impression is that analytic results at finite coupling are generally unavailable. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, using domain walls in Abelian-Higgs models as the simplest example, that exact solitons at finite gauge coupling can be readily obtained if the number of Higgs fields ($N_F$) is large enough. In particular, we present a family of exact solutions, describing $N$ domain walls at arbitrary positions in models with at least $N_F \geq 2N+1$. We have also found that adding together any pair of solution can produce a new exact solution if the combined tension is below a certain limit.

Dynamical Realization of the Brane world Scenario Using Topological Solitons

In this thesis we discuss how the brane world scenario can be realized dynamically within the field theoretical framework using topological solitons. As a playground we consider a bosonic sector of a (4+1)-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory, which naturally supports soliton of co-dimension one, a domain wall. We first discuss separate localization of matter fields and gauge fields on the world-volume of the domain wall and then we present two explicit five-dimensional models, where both matter fields and gauge fields are localized together with minimal interactions. We show that matter fields localize in the adjoint representation of the non-Abelian gauge group and we calculate the effective interaction Lagrangian of these matter fields up to the second order in derivatives. We discuss similarities of our models with effective models describing pions in QCD and with D-branes from string theory.

Dynamics of slender monopoles and anti-monopoles in non-Abelian superconductor

Low energy dynamics of magnetic monopoles and anti-monopoles in the U(2) gauge theory is studied in the Higgs (non-Abelian superconducting) phase. The monopoles in this superconducting phase are not spherical but are of slender ellipsoid which are pierced by a vortex string. We investigate scattering of the slender monopole and anti-monopole, and find that they do not always decay into radiation, contrary to our naive intuition. They can repel, make bound states (magnetic mesons) or resonances. Analytical solutions including any number of monopoles and anti-monopoles are obtained in the first non-trivial order of rigid-body approximation. We point out that some part of solutions of slender monopole system in 1+3 dimensions can be mapped exactly onto the sine-Gordon system in 1+1 dimensions. This observation allows us to visualize dynamics of monopole and anti-monopole scattering easily.

Stabilizing matter and gauge fields localized on walls

Both non-Abelian gauge fields and minimally interacting massless matter fields are localized on a domain wall in the five-dimensional spacetime. Field-dependent gauge coupling naturally gives a position-dependent coupling to localize non-Abelian gauge fields on the domain wall. An economical field content allows us to eliminate a moduli for a instability, and to demonstrate the positivity of the position-dependent coupling in the entire moduli space. Effective Lagrangian similar to the chiral Lagrangian is found with a new feature of different coupling strengths for adjoint and singlet matter that depend on the width of the domain wall.

Cotangent bundle over Hermitian symmetric space $E_7/E_6 \times U(1)$ from projective superspace

We construct an $\mathcal{N}$ supersymmetric sigma model on the cotangent bundle over the Hermitian symmetric space $E_7/(E_6\times U(1))$ in the projective superspace formalism, which is a manifest $\mathcal{N}=2$ off-shell superfield formulation in four-dimensional spacetime. To obtain this model we elaborate on results developed in arXiv:0811.0218 and present a new closed formula for the cotangent bundle action, which is valid for all Hermitian symmetric spaces. We show that the structure of cotangent bundle action is intimately related to the analytic structure of the Kähler potential with respect to a uniform rescaling of coordinates.

Matter Fields and Non-Abelian Gauge Fields Localized on Walls

Massless matter fields and non-Abelian gauge fields are localized on domain walls in a (4+1)-dimensional $U(N)_c$ gauge theory with $SU(N)_{L}\times SU(N)_{R}\times U(1)_{A}$ flavor symmetry. We also introduce $SU(N)_{L+R}$ flavor gauge fields and a scalar-field-dependent gauge coupling, which provides massless non-Abelian gauge fields localized on the wall. We find a chiral Lagrangian interacting minimally with the non-Abelian gauge field together with nonlinear interactions of moduli fields as the (3+1)-dimensional effective field theory up to the second order of derivatives. Our result provides a step towards a realistic model building of brane-world scenario using topological solitons.

Localization of matter fields and non-Abelian gauge fields on domain walls

We propose a method for simultaneous localization of non-Abelian gauge fields and matter fields with minimal interaction on domain walls using $U(N)_c$ gauge theory with $SU(N)_{L}\times SU(N)_{R}\times U(1)_{A}$ flavor symmetry. Localization of non-Abelian fields is achieved using field-dependent gauge coupling. We find that effective Lagrangian up to second order of derivatives for low energy fluctuations resembles a chiral model from hadron physics with additional minimal interactions of pions with localized gauge fields together with nonlinear interactions of moduli fields. This result provides a step towards a realistic model building of brane-world scenario using topological solitons.
