Orientation-preserving Young measures

We prove a characterization result in the spirit of the Kinderlehrer-Pedregal Theorem for Young measures generated by gradients of Sobolev maps satisfying the orientation-preserving constraint, that is the pointwise Jacobian is positive almost everywhere. The argument to construct the appropriate generating sequences from such Young measures is based on a variant of convex integration in conjunction with an explicit lamination construction in matrix space. Our generating sequence is bounded in $L^p$ for $p$ less than the space dimension, a regime in which the pointwise Jacobian loses some of its important properties. On the other hand, for $p$ larger than, or equal to, the space dimension the situation necessarily becomes rigid and a construction as presented here cannot succeed. Applications to relaxation of integral functionals, the theory of semiconvex hulls, and approximation of weakly orientation-preserving maps by strictly orientation-preserving ones in Sobolev spaces are given.

Thin-film limits of functionals on A-free vector fields

This paper deals with variational principles on thin films subject to linear PDE constraints represented by a constant-rank operator $\mathcal{A}$. We study the effective behavior of integral functionals as the thickness of the domain tends to zero, investigating both upper and lower bounds for the $Γ$-limit. Under certain conditions we show that the limit is an integral functional and give an explicit formula. The limit functional turns out to be constrained to $\mathcal{A}_0$-free vector fields, where the limit operator $\mathcal{A}_0$ is in general not of constant rank. This result extends work by Bouchitte, Fonseca and Mascarenhas [J. Convex Anal. 16 (2009), pp. 351--365] to the setting of $\mathcal{A}$-free vector fields. While the lower bound follows from a Young measure approach together with a new decomposition lemma, the construction of a recovery sequence relies on algebraic considerations in Fourier space. This part of the argument requires a careful analysis of the limiting behavior of the rescaled operators $\mathcal{A}_ε$ by a suitable convergence of their symbols, as well as an explicit construction for plane waves inspired by the bending moment formulas in the theory of (linear) elasticity. We also give a few applications to common operators $\mathcal{A}$.

A local proof for the characterization of Young measures generated by sequences in BV

This work presents a new proof of the recent characterization theorem for generalized Young measures generated by sequences in BV by Kristensen and the author [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 197 (2010), 539-598]. The present argument is based on a localization technique together with a local Hahn-Banach argument in novel function spaces combined with an application of Alberti's Rank-One Theorem. This strategy avoids employing a relaxation theorem as in the previously known proof, and the new tools introduced in its course should prove useful in other contexts as well. In particular, we introduce homogeneous Young measures, separately at regular and singular points, which exhibit rather different behaviour than the classical homogeneous Young measures. As an application, we show how for BV-Young measures with an atomic part one can find a generating sequence respecting this structure.

Lower semicontinuity and Young measures in BV without Alberti's Rank-One Theorem

We give a new proof of sequential weak* lower semicontinuity in $\BV(Ω;\R^m)$ for integral functionals with a quasiconvex Carathéodory integrand with linear growth at infinity and such that the recession function $f^\infty$ exists in a strong sense and is (jointly) continuous. In contrast to the classical proofs by Ambrosio & Dal Maso [J. Funct. Anal. 109 (1992), 76-97] and Fonseca & Müller [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 123 (1993), 1-49], we do not use Alberti's Rank-One Theorem [Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A} 123 (1993), 239-274], but a rigidity result for gradients. The proof is set in the framework of generalized Young measures and proceeds via establishing Jensen-type inequalities for regular and singular points of $Du$.

Lower semicontinuity for integral functionals in the space of functions of bounded deformation via rigidity and Young measures

We establish a general weak* lower semicontinuity result in the space $\BD(Ω)$ of functions of bounded deformation for functionals of the form $$\Fcal(u) := \int_Ωf \bigl(x, \Ecal u \bigr) \dd x + \int_Ωf^\infty \Bigl(x, \frac{\di E^s u}{\di \abs{E^s u}} \Bigr) \dd \abs{E^s u} + \int_{\partial Ω} f^\infty \bigl(x, u|_{\partial Ω} \odot n_Ω\bigr) \dd \Hcal^{d-1}$$, $u \in \BD(Ω)$. The main novelty is that we allow for non-vanishing Cantor-parts in the symmetrized derivative $Eu$. The proof is accomplished via Jensen-type inequalities for generalized Young measures and a construction of good blow-ups, which is based on local rigidity arguments for some differential inclusions involving symmetrized gradients. This strategy allows us to establish the lower semicontinuity result without an Alberti-type theorem in $\BD(Ω)$, which is not available at present. We also include existence and relaxation results for variational problems in $\BD(Ω)$, as well as a complete discussion of some differential inclusions for the symmetrized gradient in two dimensions.
