A Vision-based Framework for Intelligent gNodeB Mobility Control

This paper proposes a vision-based framework for the intelligent control of mobile Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) base stations (gNBs) operating in dynamic wireless environments. The framework comprises three innovative components. The first is the introduction of novel Service Models (SMs) within a vision-enabled O-RAN architecture, termed VisionRAN. These SMs extend state-of-the-art O-RAN-based architectures by enabling the transmission of vision-based sensing data and gNB positioning control messages. The second is an O-RAN xApp, VisionApp, which fuses vision and radio data, and uses this information to control the position of a mobile gNB, using a Deep Q-Network (DQN). The third is a digital twin environment, VisionTwin, which incorporates vision data and can emulate realistic wireless scenarios; this digital twin was used to train the DQN running in VisionApp and validate the overall system. Experimental results, obtained using real vision data and an emulated radio, demonstrate that the proposed approach reduces the duration of Line-of-Sight (LoS) blockages by up to 75% compared to a static gNB. These findings confirm the viability of integrating multimodal perception and learning-based control within RANs.

CONVERGE: A Multi-Agent Vision-Radio Architecture for xApps

Telecommunications and computer vision have evolved independently. With the emergence of high-frequency wireless links operating mostly in line-of-sight, visual data can help predict the channel dynamics by detecting obstacles and help overcoming them through beamforming or handover techniques. This paper proposes a novel architecture for delivering real-time radio and video sensing information to O-RAN xApps through a multi-agent approach, and introduces a new video function capable of generating blockage information for xApps, enabling Integrated Sensing and Communications. Experimental results show that the delay of sensing information remains under 1\,ms and that an xApp can successfully use radio and video sensing information to control the 5G/6G RAN in real-time.

On the Resilience of Underwater Semantic Wireless Communications

Underwater wireless communications face significant challenges due to propagation constraints, limiting the effectiveness of traditional radio and optical technologies. Long-range acoustic communications support distances up to a few kilometers, but suffer from low bandwidth, high error ratios, and multipath interference. Semantic communications, which focus on transmitting extracted semantic features rather than raw data, present a promising solution by significantly reducing the volume of data transmitted over the wireless link. This paper evaluates the resilience of SAGE, a semantic-oriented communications framework that combines semantic processing with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to compress and transmit image data as textual descriptions over acoustic links. To assess robustness, we use a custom-tailored simulator that introduces character errors observed in underwater acoustic channels. Evaluation results show that SAGE can successfully reconstruct meaningful image content even under varying error conditions, highlighting its potential for robust and efficient underwater wireless communication in harsh environments.

Energy-Efficiency Architectural Enhancements for Sensing-Enabled Mobile Networks

Sensing will be a key technology in 6G networks, enabling a plethora of new sensing-enabled use cases. Some of the use cases relate to deployments over a wide physical area that needs to be sensed by multiple sensing sources at different locations. The efficient management of the sensing resources is pivotal for sustainable sensing-enabled mobile network designs. In this paper, we provide an example of such use case, and show the energy consumption due to sensing has potential to scale to prohibitive levels. We then propose architectural enhancements to solve this problem, and discuss energy saving and energy efficient strategies in sensing, that can only be properly quantified and applied with the proposed architectural enhancements.

Vision-Radio Experimental Infrastructure Architecture Towards 6G

Telecommunications and computer vision have evolved separately so far. Yet, with the shift to sub-terahertz (sub-THz) and terahertz (THz) radio communications, there is an opportunity to explore computer vision technologies together with radio communications, considering the dependency of both technologies on Line of Sight. The combination of radio sensing and computer vision can address challenges such as obstructions and poor lighting. Also, machine learning algorithms, capable of processing multimodal data, play a crucial role in deriving insights from raw and low-level sensing data, offering a new level of abstraction that can enhance various applications and use cases such as beamforming and terminal handovers. This paper introduces CONVERGE, a pioneering vision-radio paradigm that bridges this gap by leveraging Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) to facilitate a dual "View-to-Communicate, Communicate-to-View" approach. CONVERGE offers tools that merge wireless communications and computer vision, establishing a novel Research Infrastructure (RI) that will be open to the scientific community and capable of providing open datasets. This new infrastructure will support future research in 6G and beyond concerning multiple verticals, such as telecommunications, automotive, manufacturing, media, and health.
