Influence of intrinsic spin in the formation of singularities for inhomogeneous effective dust space-times

The evolution of inhomogeneous space-times composed of uncharged fermions is studied for Szekeres metrics which have no Killing vectors, in general. Using the Einstein-Cartan theory to include the effects of (intrinsic) matter spin in General Relativity, the dynamics of a perfect fluid with non-null spin degrees of freedom is considered. It is shown that, if the matter is composed by effective dust and certain constraints on the initial data are verified, a singularity will not form. Various special cases are discussed, such as Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi and Bianchi I space-times, where the results are further extended or shown explicitly to be verified.

Gravitational radiation and the evolution of gravitational collapse in cylindrical symmetry

Using the Sparling form and a geometric construction adapted to spacetimes with a 2-dimensional isometry group, we analyse a quasi-local measure of gravitational energy. We then study the gravitational radiation through spacetime junctions in cylindrically symmetric models of gravitational collapse to singularities. The models result from the matching of collapsing dust fluids interiors with gravitational wave exteriors, given by the Einstein-Rosen type solutions. For a given choice of a frame adapted to the symmetry of the matching hypersurface, we are able to compute the total gravitational energy radiated during the collapse and state whether the gravitational radiation is incoming or outgoing, in each case. This also enables us to distinguish whether a gravitational collapse is being enhanced by the gravitational radiation.

The Einstein-Friedrich-nonlinear scalar field system and the stability of scalar field Cosmologies

A frame representation is used to derive a first order quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic system for a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. This procedure is inspired by similar evolution equations introduced by Friedrich to study the Einstein-Euler system. The resulting evolution system is used to show that small nonlinear perturbations of expanding Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker backgrounds, with scalar field potentials satisfying certain future asymptotic conditions, decay exponentially to zero, in synchronous time.

Radiative gravitational collapse to spherical, toroidal and higher genus black holes

We derive the matching conditions between FLRW and generalised Vaidya spacetimes with spherical, planar or hyperbolic symmetry, across timelike hypersurfaces. We then construct new models of gravitational collapse of FLRW spacetimes with a negative cosmological constant having electromagnetic radiation in the exterior. The final state of the collapse are asymptotically AdS black holes with spherical, toroidal or higher genus topologies. We analyse the collapse dynamics including trapped surface formation, for various examples.

Cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous dust collapse with a zero expansion component

We investigate a class of cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous $Λ$-dust spacetimes which have a regular axis and some zero expansion component. For $Λ\ne 0$, we obtain new exact solutions to the Einstein equations and show that they are unique, within that class. For $Λ=0$, we recover the Senovilla-Vera metric and show that it can be locally matched to an Einstein-Rosen type of exterior. Finally, we explore some consequences of the matching, such as trapped surface formation and gravitational radiation in the exterior.

Geodesics dynamics in the Linet-Tian spacetime with Lambda>0

We analyse the geodesics' dynamics in cylindrically symmetric vacuum spacetimes with Lambda>0 and compare it to the Lambda=0 and Lambda<0 cases. When Lambda>0 there are two singularities in the metric which brings new qualitative features to the dynamics. We find that Lambda=0 planar timelike confined geodesics are unstable against the introduction of a sufficiently large Lambda, in the sense that the bounded orbits become unbounded. In turn, any non-planar radially bounded geodesics are stable for any positive Lambda. We construct global non-singular static vacuum spacetimes in cylindrical symmetry with Lambda>0 by matching the Linet-Tian metric with two appropriate sources.

Cylindrically symmetric models of gravitational collapse to black holes: a short review

We survey results about exact cylindrically symmetric models of gravitational collapse in General Relativity. We focus on models which result from the matching of two spacetimes having collapsing interiors which develop trapped surfaces and vaccum exteriors containing gravitational waves. We collect some theorems from the literature which help to decide a priori about eventual spacetime matchings. We revise, in more detail, some toy models which include some of the main mathematical and physical issues that arise in this context, and compute the gravitational energy flux through the matching boundary of a particular collapsing region. Along the way, we point out several interesting open problems.

Relative information entropy in cosmology: The problem of information entanglement

The necessary information to distinguish a local inhomogeneous mass density field from its spatial average on a compact domain of the universe can be measured by relative information entropy. The Kullback-Leibler (KL) formula arises very naturally in this context, however, it provides a very complicated way to compute the mutual information between spatially separated but causally connected regions of the universe in a realistic, inhomogeneous model. To circumvent this issue, by considering a parametric extension of the KL measure, we develop a simple model to describe the mutual information which is entangled via the gravitational field equations. We show that the Tsallis relative entropy can be a good approximation in the case of small inhomogeneities, and for measuring the independent relative information inside the domain, we propose the Rényi relative entropy formula.

Geodesics dynamics in the Linet-Tian spacetime with Lambda<0

We investigate the geodesics' kinematics and dynamics in the Linet-Tian metric with Lambda<0 and compare with the results for the Levi-Civita metric, when Lambda=0. This is used to derive new stability results about the geodesics' dynamics in static vacuum cylindrically symmetric spacetimes with respect to the introduction of Lambda<0. In particular, we find that increasing |Lambda| always increases the minimum and maximum radial distances to the axis of any spatially confined planar null geodesic. Furthermore, we show that, in some cases, the inclusion of any Lambda<0 breaks the geodesics' orbit confinement of the Lambda=0 metric, for both planar and non-planar null geodesics, which are therefore unstable. Using the full system of geodesics' equations, we provide numerical examples which illustrate our results.

Covariant and gauge-invariant linear scalar perturbations in multiple scalar field cosmologies

We derive a set of equations monitoring the evolution of covariant and gauge-invariant linear scalar perturbations of Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker models with multiple interacting non-linear scalar fields. We use a dynamical systems' approach in order to perform a stability analysis for some classes of scalar field potentials. In particular, using a recent approximation for the inflationary dynamics of the background solution, we derive conditions under which homogenization occurs for chaotic (quadratic and quartic potentials) and new inflation. We also prove a cosmic no-hair result for power-law inflation and its generalisation for two scalar fields with independent exponential potentials (assisted power-law inflation).

Separating expansion and collapse in general fluid models with heat flux

In this paper we consider spherically symmetric general fluids with heat flux, motivated by causal thermodynamics, and give the appropriate set of conditions that define separating shells defining the divide between expansion and collapse. To do so we add the new requirement that heat flux and its evolution vanish at the separating surface. We extend previous works with a fully nonlinear analysis in the 1+3 splitting, and present gauge-invariant results. The definition of the separating surface is inspired by the conservation of the Misner-Sharp mass, and is obtained by generalizing the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equilibrium and turnaround conditions. We emphasize the nonlocal character of these conditions as found in previous works and discuss connections to the phenomena of spacetime cracking and thermal peeling.

Review on exact and perturbative deformations of the Einstein-Straus model: uniqueness and rigidity results

The Einstein-Straus model consists of a Schwarzschild spherical vacuole in a Friedman-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) dust spacetime (with or without Λ). It constitutes the most widely accepted model to answer the question of the influence of large scale (cosmological) dynamics on local systems. The conclusion drawn by the model is that there is no influence from the cosmic background, since the spherical vacuole is static. Spherical generalizations to other interior matter models are commonly used in the construction of lumpy inhomogeneous cosmological models. On the other hand, the model has proven to be reluctant to admit non-spherical generalizations. In this review, we summarize the known uniqueness results for this model. These seem to indicate that the only reasonable and realistic non-spherical deformations of the Einstein-Straus model require perturbing the FLRW background. We review results about linear perturbations of the Einstein-Straus model, where the perturbations in the vacuole are assumed to be stationary and axially symmetric so as to describe regions (voids in particular) in which the matter has reached an equilibrium regime.

Local conditions separating expansion from collapse in spherically symmetric models with anisotropic pressures

We investigate spherically symmetric spacetimes with an anisotropic fluid and discuss the existence and stability of a dividing shell separating expanding and collapsing regions. We resort to a 3+1 splitting and obtain gauge invariant conditions relating intrinsic spacetimes quantities to properties of the matter source. We find that the dividing shell is defined by a generalization of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equilibrium condition. The latter establishes a balance between the pressure gradients, both isotropic and anisotropic, and the strength of the fields induced by the Misner-Sharp mass inside the separating shell and by the pressure fluxes. This defines a local equilibrium condition, but conveys also a non-local character given the definition of the Misner-Sharp mass. By the same token, it is also a generalized thermodynamical equation of state as usually interpreted for the perfect fluid case, which now has the novel feature of involving both the isotropic and the anisotropic stress. We have cast the governing equations in terms of local, gauge invariant quantities which are revealing of the role played by the anisotropic pressures and inhomogeneous electric part of the Weyl tensor. We analyse a particular solution with dust and radiation that provides an illustration of our conditions. In addition, our gauge invariant formalism not only encompasses the cracking process from Herrera and coworkers but also reveals transparently the interplay and importance of the shear and of the anisotropic stresses.

Spherically symmetric models: separating expansion from contraction in models with anisotropic pressures

We investigate spherically symmetric spacetimes with an anisotropic fluid and discuss the existence and stability of a dividing shell separating expanding and collapsing regions. We find that the dividing shell is defined by a relation between the pressure gradients, both isotropic and anisotropic, and the strength of the fields induced by the Misner-Sharpe mass inside the separating shell and by the pressure fluxes. This balance is a generalization of the Tolman-Oppenheimer- Volkoff equilibrium condition which defines a local equilibrium condition, but conveys also a non- local character given the definition of the Misner-Sharpe mass. We present a particular solution with dust and radiation that provides an illustration of our results.

Conformally flat sources for the Linet-Tian spacetime

We investigate the matching, across cylindrical surfaces, of static cylindrically symmetric conformally flat spacetimes with a cosmological constant $Λ$, satisfying regularity conditions at the axis, to an exterior Linet-Tian spacetime. We prove that for $Λ\leq 0$ such matching is impossible. On the other hand, we show through simple examples that the matching is possible for $Λ>0$. We suggest a physical argument that might explain these results.

The role of shell crossing on the existence and stability of trapped matter shells in spherical inhomogeneous Λ-CDM models

We analyse the dynamics of trapped matter shells in spherically symmetric inhomogeneous Λ-CDM models. The investigation uses a Generalised Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi description with initial conditions subject to the constraints of having spatially asymptotic cosmological expansion, initial Hubble-type flow and a regular initial density distribution. We discuss the effects of shell crossing and use a qualitative description of the local trapped matter shells to explore global properties of the models. Once shell crossing occurs, we find a splitting of the global shells separating expansion from collapse into, at most, two global shells: an inner and an outer limit trapped matter shell. In the case of expanding models, the outer limit trapped matter shell necessarily exists. We also study the role of shear in this process, compare our analysis with the Newtonian framework and give concrete examples using density profile models of structure formation in cosmology.

Separating expansion from contraction in spherically symmetric models with a perfect-fluid: Generalization of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff condition and application to models with a cosmological constant

We investigate spherically symmetric perfect-fluid spacetimes and discuss the existence and stability of a dividing shell separating expanding and collapsing regions. We perform a 3+1 splitting and obtain gauge invariant conditions relating the intrinsic spatial curvature of the shells to the Misner-Sharp mass and to a function of the pressure that we introduce and that generalizes the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equilibrium condition. We find that surfaces fulfilling those two conditions fit, locally, the requirements of a dividing shell and we argue that cosmological initial conditions should allow its global validity. We analyze the particular cases of the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi dust models with a cosmological constant as an example of a cold dark matter model with a cosmological constant (Λ-CDM) and its generalization to contain a central perfect-fluid core. These models provide simple, but physically interesting illustrations of our results.
