Quasi-Single-Mode Transmission over Ultra-Low Loss Few-Mode Fibre for Data Centre Interconnects

A novel ultra-low-loss few-mode fibre is experimentally investigated for quasi-single-mode transmission over data centre interconnect distances. Multipath interference is characterised across the C-band matching a modified Gaussian noise model to experimental results obtained with conventional training-sequence-based digital signal processing, enabling inservice assessment without traffic disruption. This model shows strong agreement with power-fluctuation measurements performed on a dedicated unmodulated-laser setup. The impact of equaliser length and digital backpropagation on system performance is also analysed. Compared with standard ultralow-loss single-mode fibres, transmission experiments reveal only minor signal-to-noise ratio degradation for up to 42-Gbaud DP-256-QAM over a 24-km span. These findings highlight the potential of ultra-low-loss few-mode fibre for scalable, highcapacity data centre interconnect applications while offering potential for future space-division multiplexing upgrades.

Closed-Form Expressions for Nonlinearity Coefficients in Multimode Fibers

We derive novel approximate closed-form expressions for the nonlinear coupling coefficients appearing in the Manakov equations for multimode fibers for space-division multiplexing in the two regimes of strong and weak coupling. The expressions depend only on few fiber design parameters. In particular, the Manakov coefficients are shown to be simple rational numbers which depend solely on the number of guided modes. The overall nonlinearity coefficients are found to decrease with increasing core radius and to stay nearly constant with increasing refractive index difference between core and cladding. Validation is performed through a numerical approach. The consequences of the findings onto fiber design are discussed in terms of achievable data rates. The analysis is mainly focused on the trenchless parabolic graded-index profile, but considerations on the use of realistic trenches and non-parabolic indices, and on the step-index profile are given.

Unlocking Mode Programming with Multi-Plane Light Conversion Using Computer-Generated Hologram Optimisation

Programmable optical devices provide performance enhancement and flexibility to spatial multiplexing systems enabling transmission of tributaries in high-order eigenmodes of spatially-diverse transmission media, like multimode fiber (MMF). Wavefront shaping with spatial light modulators (SLMs) facilitates scalability of the transmission media by allowing for channel diagonalization and quasi-single-input single-output operation. Programmable mode multiplexing configurations like multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) utilise the SLM and offer the potential to simultaneously launch an arbitrary subset of spatial tributaries in any N-mode MMF. Such programmable optical processor would enable the throughput of space-division multiplexing (SDM) systems to be progressively increased by addressing a growing number of tributaries over one MMF and in this way meet a growing traffic demand - similarly to the wavelength-division multiplexing evolution path. Conventionally, MPLC phasemasks are calculated using the wavefront matching algorithm (WMA). However, this method does not exploit the full potential of programmable mode multiplexers. We show, that computer-generated hologram algorithms like direct search enable significant improvement compared to the traditional WMA-approach. Such gains are enabled by tailored cost functions with dynamic constraints concerning insertion loss as well as mode extinction ratio. We show that average mode extinction ratio can be greatly improved by as much as 15 dB at the expense of insertion loss deterioration of < 3 dB. One particular feature of programmable mode multiplexers is the adaptability to optimised transmission functions. Besides conventional LP modes transmission, we employ our approach on Schmidt modes, which are spatial eigenchannels with minimum crosstalk derived from a measured transmission matrix.

Optimising O-to-U Band Transmission Using Fast ISRS Gaussian Noise Numerical Integral Model

We model the transmission of ultrawideband signals, including wavelength-dependent fibre parameters: dispersion, nonlinear coefficient and effective fibre core area. To that end, the inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering Gaussian noise integral model is extended to include these parameters. The integrals involved in this frequency-domain model are numerically solved in hyperbolic coordinates using a Riemann sum. The model implementation is designed to work on parallel GPUs and is optimised for fast computational time. The model is valid for Gaussian-distributed signals and is compared with the split-step Fourier method, for transmission over standard single-mode fibre (SSMF) in the O-band (wavelengths around the zero-dispersion wavelength), showing reasonable agreement. Further, we demonstrated SNR evaluation over an 80~km SSFM single-span transmission using 589x96 GBaud channels, corresponding to almost 59 THz optical bandwidth, fully populating the O, E, S, C, L and U bands (1260-1675 nm). The SNR evaluation is completed in just 3.6 seconds using four Nvidia V100 16GB PCIe GPUs. Finally, we used this model to find the optimum launch power profile for this system achieving 747 Tbps of potential throughput over 80 km fibre and demonstrating its suitability for UWB optimisation routines.

On a Scalable Path for Multimode MIMO-DSP

A novel MIMO-DSP for space-division multiplexing over multimode fibres is proposed. A principal modes approach is shown to provide two-fold benefits: over 13 times channel memory reduction while minimising the number of optical front-ends needed to detect a subset of the spatial domain.
