Dealing with unknown quantum operations

In the context of quantum communications between two parties (here Alice and Bob), Bob's lack of knowledge about the communications channel can affect the purity of the states that he receives. The operation of applying an unknown unitary transformation to a state, thus reducing its purity, is called "twirling". As twirling affects the states that Bob receives, it also affects his perception of the operations that Alice applies to her states. In this work we find that not every operation is representable after a twirling, we show the minimal requirement for this to be possible, and we identify the correct form of the "twirled" operations.

Cartesian and polar Schmidt bases for down-converted photons

We derive an analytical form of the Schmidt modes of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) biphotons in both Cartesian and polar coordinates. We show that these correspond to Hermite-Gauss (HG) or Laguerre-Gauss (LG) modes only for a specific value of their width, and we show how such value depends on the experimental parameters. The Schmidt modes that we explicitly derive allow one to set up an optimised projection basis that maximises the mutual information gained from a joint measurement. The possibility of doing so with LG modes makes it possible to take advantage of the properties of orbital angular momentum eigenmodes. We derive a general entropic entanglement measure using the Rényi entropy as a function of the Schmidt number, K, and then retrieve the von Neumann entropy, S. Using the relation between S and K we show that, for highly entangled states, a non-ideal measurement basis does not degrade the number of shared bits by a large extent. More specifically, given a non-ideal measurement which corresponds to the loss of a fraction of the total number of modes, we can quantify the experimental parameters needed to generate an entangled SPDC state with a sufficiently high dimensionality to retain any given fraction of shared bits.

Schmidt modes generated in parametric downconversion

This paper presents the general Schmidt decomposition of two-photon fields generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). It discusses in particular the separation of the radial and azimuthal degrees of freedom, the role of projection in modal analysis, and the benefits of collinear phase mismatch. The paper is written in a review style and presents a wealth of numerical results. It aims at emphasising the physics beyond the mathematics, through discussions and graphical representations of key results.

Full characterisation of the quantum spiral bandwidth of entangled biphotons

Spontaneous parametric down conversion has been shown to be a reliable source of entangled photons. Amongst the wide range of properties that have been shown to be entangled, it is the orbital angular momentum that is the focus of our study. We investigate, in particular, the bi-photon state generated using a Gaussian pump beam. We derive an expression for the simultaneous correlations in the orbital angular momentum and radial momentum of the down-converted Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Our result allows us, for example, to calculate the spiral bandwidth with no restriction on the geometry of the beams: $\ell$, $p$ and the beam widths are all free parameters. Moreover, we show that, with the usual paraxial and collinear approximations, a fully analytic expression for the correlations can be derived.
