Adversarial robustness of a U-Net-based model observer for CT protocol optimization

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in medical imaging, yet its robustness to input perturbations remains a critical concern for a wide clinical adoption. To this end, we used adversarial examples to systematically probe vulnerabilities of a U-Net-based model observer for computed tomography protocol optimization, performing detection and localization of low-contrast objects in a phantom dataset. Adversarial attacks were generated using both gradient-based and optimization-based white-box methods. Fast gradient perturbations produced high misclassification rates, reaching up to 75% at intermediate perturbation levels while remaining visually imperceptible. Localization was more robust, with success rates of about 25% for small perturbations and 42% at moderate levels. In contrast, optimization-based attack achieved success rates close to 50% for both tasks. To mitigate these vulnerabilities, dynamic adversarial training was implemented. This reduced the success rate of optimization-based attacks to 7% for classification and 13% when including localization-specific training, demonstrating a substantial robustness improvement without compromising task performances, confirmed by localization receiver operating characteristic analysis. To further interpret model behavior, radiomic texture analysis was performed on original and adversarial images. While most global image statistics remain stable, specific texture-related features exhibit consistent changes in successful attacks, highlighting the model's sensitivity to subtle local intensity patterns. Overall, adversarial training improves robustness without degrading performance, while radiomic analysis reveals interpretable links between texture alterations and prediction failures, supporting more reliable and explainable AI systems for medical imaging.

Pinching rules in the chiral-splitting description of one-loop string amplitudes

Loop amplitudes in string theories reduce to those of gauge theories and (super)gravity in their worldline description as the inverse string tension $α'$ tends to zero. The appearance of reducible diagrams in these $α' \rightarrow 0$ limits is determined through so-called pinching rules in the worldline literature. In this work, we extend these pinching rules to the chiral-splitting description of one-loop superstring amplitudes where left- and right-moving degrees of freedom decouple at fixed loop momentum. Starting from six points, the Kronecker-Eisenstein integrands of chiral amplitudes introduce subtleties into the pinching rules and integration-by-parts simplifications. Resolutions of these subtleties are presented and applied to produce a new superspace representation of the six-point one-loop amplitude of type IIA/B supergravity. The worldline computations and their subtleties are compared with the ambitwistor-string approach to one-loop field-theory amplitudes where integration-by-parts manipulations are shown to be more flexible. Throughout this work, the homology invariance of loop-momentum dependent correlation functions on the torus is highlighted as a consistency condition of $α' \rightarrow 0$ limits and their comparison with ambitwistor methods.

Manifest colour-kinematics duality and double-copy in the string-based formalism

The relation for the gravity polarisation tensor as the tensor product of two gluon polarisation vectors has been well-known for a long time, but a version of this relation for multi-particle fields is presently still not known. Here we show that in order for this to happen we first have to ensure that the multi-particle polarisations satisfy colour-kinematics duality. In previous work it has been show that this arises naturally from the Bern-Kosower formalism for one-loop gluon amplitudes, and here we show that the tensor product for multi-particle fields arise naturally in the Bern-Dunbar-Shimada formalism for one-loop gravity amplitudes. This allows us to formulate a new prescription for double-copy gravity Berends-Giele currents, and to obtain both the colour-dressed Yang-Mills Berends-Giele currents in the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson gauge and the gravitational Berends-Giele currents explicitly. An attractive feature of our formalism is that it never becomes necessary to determine gauge transformation terms. Our double-copy prescription can also be applied to other cases, and to make this point we derive the double-copy perturbiners for $α'$-deformed gravity and the bi-adjoint scalar model.

Color-kinematics duality from the Bern-Kosower formalism

Berends-Giele currents are fundamental building blocks for on-shell amplitudes in non-abelian gauge theory. We present a novel procedure to construct them using the Bern-Kosower formalism for one-loop gluon amplitudes. Applying the pinch procedure of that formalism to a suitable special case the currents are naturally obtained in terms of multi-particle fields and obeying colour-kinematics duality. As a feedback to the Bern-Kosower formalism we outline how the multi-particle polarisations and field-strength tensors can be used to significantly streamline the pinch procedure.

Compton-like scattering of a scalar particle with N photons and one graviton

Tree-level scattering amplitudes for a scalar particle coupled to an arbitrary number N of photons and a single graviton are computed. We employ the worldline formalism as the main tool to compute the irreducible part of the amplitude, where all the photons and the graviton are directly attached to the scalar line, then derive a tree replacement rule to construct the reducible parts of the amplitude which involve irreducible pure N-photon two-scalar amplitudes where one photon line emits the graviton. We test our construction by verifying the on-shell gauge and diffeomorphism Ward identities, at arbitrary N.
