$\mathcal{N}=1$ spectra, cubic couplings and the rigid fate of DGKT

We show that in the DGKT scenario on a generic Calabi-Yau three-fold, a recently proposed holographic constraint on cubic couplings is satisfied if and only if the Calabi-Yau is rigid, i.e. when $h^{2,1}=0$. More generally, we illustrate how in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity, extremal cubic couplings are determined by the third derivatives of the real, K\"ahler-invariant superpotential, while the eigenvalues of its Hessian compute the conformal dimensions of the dual scalar operators. These results extend more broadly beyond 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity. Applying them to supersymmetric DGKT vacua, we prove that extremal cubic couplings always vanish in the K\"ahler + universal CS/dilaton sector, whereas non-vanishing (super-)extremal couplings are always present in the complex structure sector. It follows that the holographic constraint is satisfied in DGKT if and only if the Calabi-Yau three-fold is rigid with $h^{2,1}=0$.

A note on the holographic consistency of DGKT-type vacua with $h^{2,1}=0$

Recent works have pointed out the existence of a holographic constraint on (extremal) three-point functions of scalar moduli in scale-separated AdS vacua. Moreover, it has been shown that this constraint is satisfied in the DGKT scenario in massive type IIA for the original $\mathbb{T}^6/(\mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_3)$ orbifold, as a result of a series of unexpected cancellations. We extend the analysis to more elaborate scenarios, involving geometries with less symmetry and more complicated triple-intersection numbers. Surprisingly, the cancellations persist in all examples with $h^{2,1}=0$, leading us to speculate this conclusion might hold more generally.

Axion-Scalar Dynamics: from the Distance Conjecture to Cosmic Acceleration

We discuss the cosmology of axion-scalar systems in asymptotic limits of type IIB/F-theory flux compactifications. These results allow us to test a putative extension of the Distance Conjecture in a dynamical setting, which posits that towers of states should become exponentially light in the distance measured along the trajectory (as well as in the geodesic one). In the case of infinite distance limits, we review a known classification of late-time asymptotic solutions, which always verify the extension of the conjecture whenever all relevant effects are taken into account. We also extend the analysis to the case of finite distance limits, where the analogous statement would require trajectories approaching the singularity to have a finite length. Surprisingly, we find this is not the case for the class of models under consideration. Moreover, the new solutions we find exhibit asymptotic accelerated expansion when approaching the boundary of moduli space.

Broken and restored: a holographic constraint for AdS vacua with orbifolds

It has been suggested that families of weakly-coupled AdS vacua with a large-$N$ holographic dual must satisfy non-trivial consistency requirements, which amount to the vanishing of certain cubic couplings, corresponding to (super-)extremal arrangements of scalar operators. While this constraint is known to hold in the simplest incarnation of the DGKT scenario in massive type IIA string theory, i.e. on the $\mathbb{Z}_3\times \mathbb{Z}_3$ orbifold, we find that it is generically violated for type II AdS$_3$ and AdS$_4$ vacua arising from $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifolds respectively, including scale-separated solutions and DGKT-CFI-type models. In most cases, however, this can be cured by enlarging the orbifold group to a suitable (non-abelian) extension that projects out precisely those scalar operators that would otherwise participate in the constrained cubic couplings. Our results suggest that consistency of the putative holographic dual imposes a non-trivial restriction on the compactification geometry, indicating in particular that O-planes cannot wrap cycles in distinct homology classes.

The gravitational wave landscape of cosmic string networks with varying tension

We fully classify the phenomenology of gravitational wave emission from scaling cosmic string networks with varying tension and compute the spectral indices of the resulting stochastic backgrounds. In string compactifications, periods of varying tension occur when moduli acquire a time-dependence. We present concrete examples in type IIB string theory as D3- and NS5- branes wrapping internal cycles, which become dynamical due to the effect of moduli potentials. Moreover, we use Swampland constraints to derive general bounds on the allowed time-variation of the effective string tension in FLRW backgrounds and on the resulting spectral indices.

A Holographic Constraint on Scale Separation

We propose a new consistency condition for the compatibility of a gravitational effective field theory in AdS with a dual holographic description in terms of a family of large-$N$ CFTs. Using large-$N$ factorization of correlation functions combined with a properly defined notion of single- and multi-particle operators, we argue that the cubic scalar bulk couplings for fields dual to operators with extremal arrangements of the conformal dimensions, i.e. $\Delta_i=\Delta_j+\Delta_k$, should vanish. We apply this criterion to the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ effective supergravity theory describing the simplest DGKT AdS$_4$ vacua in type IIA string theory and show that it is non-trivially satisfied. In addition, we calculate explicitly all non-vanishing three-point correlation functions of low-lying scalar operators in the putative 3d CFTs dual to these AdS$_4$ string theory backgrounds.

Axion-Scalar Systems and Dynamical Distances

We study the cosmology of axion-scalar pairs, coupled by a hyperbolic field-space metric and with a string-motivated rational scalar potential. Borrowing tools from the theory of dynamical systems, we are able to classify all late-time trajectories and extract physical properties of the asymptotic solutions. These results suggest a Dynamical Distance Conjecture: along the physical (possibly non-geodesic) trajectories, towers of states become exponentially light as a function of the traversed field-space distance. We further rule out possible counterexamples with wildly oscillating solutions. The considered axion-scalar systems are realized in F-theory compactifications, where the axion-scalar pair is a complex-structure modulus and four-form fluxes induce the asymptotic potentials. We also provide a complete Hodge-theoretic classification of all one-modulus asymptotic potentials of this type.

Cosmic superstrings in large volume compactifications: PTAs, LISA and time-varying tension

The Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) from cosmic superstrings offers one of the few known possibilities to test String Theory within current experimental reach. However, in order to be compatible with the existing constraints, the tension of a cosmic superstring network is required to lie several orders of magnitude below the Planck scale. This is naturally realized in string compactifications where the volume of the extra dimensions is parametrically large (in string units). We estimate the GW spectrum arising from cosmic superstrings in such scenarios, providing analytical formulae as well as numerical results. Crucially, we do so within a semi-realistic string cosmology scenario, taking into account various modified cosmological epochs (such as kination or early matter domination) induced by the presence of moduli and a time-dependent string tension. We show that part of the spectrum generically lies within reach of LISA and ET, with a large class of models predicting a characteristic drop in the amplitude which may be robustly probed by LISA. The corresponding signal would encode information on the dynamics of moduli and reheating. On the other hand, the ultra-high frequency part of the spectrum can be significantly enhanced by a long, early phase of kination with time-varying tension, yielding a spectral index unique to this set-up.

Cosmic (super)strings with a time-varying tension

Cosmic (super)strings offer promising ways to test ideas about the early universe and physics at high energies. While in field theory constructions their tension is usually assumed to be constant (or at most slowly-varying), this is often not the case in the context of String Theory. Indeed, the tensions of both fundamental and field theory strings within a string compactification depend on the expectation values of the moduli, which in turn can vary with time. We discuss how the evolution of a cosmic string network changes with a time-dependent tension, both for long-strings and closed loops, by providing an appropriate generalisation of the Velocity One Scale (VOS) model and its implications. The resulting phenomenology is very rich, exhibiting novel features such as growing loops, percolation and a radiation-like behaviour of the long string network. We conclude with a few remarks on the impact for gravitational wave emission.

String Theory and the First Half of the Universe

We perform a detailed study of stringy moduli-driven cosmologies between the end of inflation and the commencement of the Hot Big Bang, including both the background and cosmological perturbations: a period that can cover half the lifetime of the universe on a logarithmic scale. Compared to the standard cosmology, stringy cosmologies motivate extended kination, tracker and moduli-dominated epochs involving significantly trans-Planckian field excursions. Conventional effective field theory is unable to control Planck-suppressed operators and so such epochs require a stringy completion for a consistent analysis. Perturbation growth in these stringy cosmologies is substantially enhanced compared to conventional cosmological histories. The transPlanckian field evolution results in radical changes to Standard Model couplings during this history and we outline potential applications to baryogenesis, dark matter and gravitational wave production.

Attractive (s)axions: cosmological trackers at the boundary of moduli space

We study the cosmological evolution of a FLRW universe dominated by the energy density of moduli close to asymptotic regions of moduli space. Due to the structure of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUGRA kinetic term, a saxion and an axion residing in the same chiral multiplet are (universally) coupled even if the latter is a flat direction of the potential, resulting in non-trivial dynamics. We generalise known results in the literature to the case of multiple moduli, showing the existence of various ``tracker" attractor solutions where the relative energy densities of many components (axions included) stay in a fixed ratio throughout the evolution. We conclude with some phenomenological applications, relevant for both the early and late universe.

Kination, Meet Kasner: On The Asymptotic Cosmology of String Compactifications

We study runaway, kination-dominated epochs in string cosmology. We show how the apparent classical decompactification runaway of the volume modulus, described by a kination epoch in the 4-dimensional EFT, can be uplifted to a classical Kasner solution in 10d in which the non-compact dimensions collapse towards a Big Crunch. This can also be generalised for arbitrary spacetime and compactification dimensions. We conclude with some comments on how this picture is modified by quantum effects, and the need for both dynamical and kinematical Swampland constraints.

Integer solutions to the anomaly equations for a class of chiral gauge theories

We find all the integer charge solutions to the equations for the cancellation of local gauge anomalies in a class of gauge theories which extend the Standard Model (SM) by a gauge group of the form $G \times U(1)$, where $G$ is an arbitrary semisimple compact Lie group. The SM fermions are assumed to be neutral under $G \times U(1)$ gauge interactions, while the new fermions transform in non-trivial representations of both the new and the SM gauge groups. Our analysis is valid also when the latter is embedded in an arbitrary semisimple compact Lie group. Theories with this structure have been recently studied as models of composite axions based on accidental symmetries and can provide a field theory resolution to the axion quality problem. We apply our results to cases of phenomenological interest and prove the existence of charge assignments with Peccei-Quinn symmetry protected up to dimension 18.

Catch-Me-If-You-Can: The Overshoot Problem and the Weak/Inflation Hierarchy

We study the overshoot problem in the context of post-inflationary string cosmology (in particular LVS). LVS cosmology features a long kination epoch as the volume modulus rolls down the exponential slope towards the final minimum, with an energy density that scales as $m_s^4$. This roll admits attractor tracker solutions, and if these are located the overshoot problem is solved. We show that, provided a sufficiently large hierarchy exists between the inflationary scale and the weak scale, this will always occur in LVS as initial seed radiation grows into the tracker solution. The consistency requirement of ending in a stable vacuum containing the weak hierarchy therefore gives a preference for high inflationary scales -- an anthropic argument, if one likes, for a large inflation/weak hierarchy. We discuss various origins, both universal and model-dependent, of the initial seed radiation (or matter). One particularly interesting case is that of a fundamental string network arising from brane inflation -- this may lead to an early epoch in which the universe energy density principally consists of gravitational waves, while an LVS fundamental string network survives into the present universe.

Chiral models of composite axions and accidental Peccei-Quinn symmetry

We introduce a class of composite axion models that provide a natural solution to the strong CP problem, and possibly account for the observed dark matter abundance. The QCD axion arises as a composite Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB) from the dynamics of a chiral gauge theory with a strongly-interacting and confining SU(N) factor and a weakly-interacting U(1), with no fundamental scalar fields. The Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is accidental and all the mass scales are generated dynamically. We analyze specific models where the PQ symmetry is broken only by operators of dimension 12 or higher. We also classify several other models where the PQ symmetry can be potentially protected up to the dimension 15 or 18 level. Our framework can be easily extended to a scenario where the Standard Model (SM) is unified into a simple gauge group, and we discuss the case of non-supersymmetric SU(5) unification. The GUT models predict the existence of additional pseudo NGBs, parametrically lighter than the GUT and PQ scales, which could have an impact on the cosmological evolution and leave observable signatures. We also clarify the selection rules under which higher-dimensional PQ-violating operators can generate a potential for the axion in the IR, and provide a discussion of the discrete symmetries in composite axion models associated to the number of domain walls. These results can be of general interest for composite axion models based on a QCD-like confining gauge group.

Integer Conformal Dimensions for Type IIA Flux Vacua

We give a concise argument that supersymmetric AdS type IIA DGKT flux vacua on general Calabi-Yaus have, interpreted holographically, integer conformal dimensions for low-lying scalar primaries in the dual CFT. These integers are independent of any compactification details, such as the background fluxes or triple intersection numbers of the compact manifold. For the Kähler moduli and dilaton, there is one operator with $Δ= 10$ and $h^{1,1}_{-}$ operators with $Δ=6$, whereas the corresponding axions have $Δ= 11$ and $Δ= 5$. For the complex structure moduli, the $h^{2,1}$ saxions have $Δ=2$, and the axions $Δ=3$. We give a tentative discussion of the origin of these integers and effects that would modify these results.

Exploring The Holographic Swampland

We extend studies of holographic aspects of moduli stabilisation scenarios to both fibred versions of LVS and the type IIA DGKT flux vacua. We study the holographic properties of the low-energy moduli Lagrangian that describes both the AdS vacuum and also small perturbations about it. For type IIA vacua in the large-volume regime, the CFT data (operator dimensions and higher-point interactions) take a universal form independent of the many arbitrary flux choices, as was previously found for LVS stabilisation. For these IIA vacua the conformal dimensions of the dual operators are also, surprisingly, all integers, although we do not understand a deeper reason why this is so. In contrast to behaviour previously found for LVS and KKLT, the fibred models also admit cases of mixed double-trace operators (for two different axion fields) where the anomalous dimension is positive.

Composite Dark Matter from Strongly-Interacting Chiral Dynamics

A class of chiral gauge theories is studied with accidentally-stable pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons playing the role of dark matter (DM). The gauge group contains a vector-like dark color factor that confines at energies larger than the electroweak scale, and a ${\rm U}(1)_D$ factor that remains weakly coupled and is spontaneously broken. All new scales are generated dynamically, including the DM mass, and the IR dynamics is fully calculable. We analyze minimal models of this kind with dark fermions transforming as non-trivial vector-like representations of the Standard Model (SM) gauge group. In realistic models, the DM candidate is a SM singlet and comes along with charged partners that can be discovered at high-energy colliders. The phenomenology of the lowest-lying new states is thus characterized by correlated predictions for astrophysical observations and laboratory experiments.
