Hénon type equations and concentration on spheres

In this paper we study the concentration profile of various kind of symmetric solutions of some semilinear elliptic problems arising in astrophysics and in diffusion phenomena. Using a reduction method we prove that doubly symmetric positive solutions in a $2m$-dimensional ball must concentrate and blow up on $(m-1)$-spheres as the concentration parameter tends to infinity. We also consider axially symmetric positive solutions in a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geq 3$, and show that concentration and blow up occur on two antipodal points, as the concentration parameter tends to infinity.

Morse index and sign changing bubble towers for Lane-Emden problems

We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem \begin{equation}\label{problemAbstract}\left\{ \begin{array}{lr} -Δu= |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{ in }Ω\\ u=0\qquad\qquad\qquad\mbox{ on }\partial Ω\end{array} \right.\tag{$\mathcal E_p$} \end{equation} where $p>1$ and $Ω$ is a smooth bounded symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^2$. We show that for families $(u_p)$ of sign-changing symmetric solutions of \eqref{problemAbstract} an upper bound on their Morse index implies concentration of the positive and negative part, $u_p^\pm$, at the same point, as $p\to+\infty$. Then an asymptotic analysis of $u_p^+$ and $u_p^-$ shows that the asymptotic profile of $(u_p)$, as $p\to+\infty$, is that of a tower of two different bubbles.

Sign-changing stationary solutions and blowup for the nonlinear heat equation in dimension two

Consider the nonlinear heat equation v_t-Δv=|v|^{p-1}v in the unit ball of R^2, with Dirichlet boundary condition. Let u_{p,K} be a radially symmetric, sign-changing stationary solution having a fixed number K of nodal regions. We prove that the solution of the equation with initial value λu_{p,K} blows up in finite time if |λ-1|>0 is sufficiently small and if p is sufficiently large. The proof is based on the analysis of the asymptotic behavior of $u_{p,K}$ and of the linearized operator L= -Δ- p |u_{p,K}|^{p-1}. To show this we consider the linearized operator L= -Δ- p|u_p|^{p-1} and study the behavior of its first eigenvalue and of its first normalized eigenfunction for large p.

Asymptotic analysis and sign changing bubble towers for Lane-Emden problems

We consider the semilinear Lane-Emden problem in a smooth bounded domain of the plane. The aim of the paper is to analyze the asymptotic behavior of sign changing solutions as the exponent p of the nonlinearity goes to infinity. Among other results we show, under some symmetry assumptions on the domain, that the positive and negative parts of a family of symmetric solutions concentrate at the same point, as p goes to infinity, and the limit profile looks like a tower of two bubbles given by a superposition of a regular and a singular solution of the Liouville problem in the plane.

Symmetry results for cooperative elliptic systems in unbounded domains

In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of semilinear cooperative elliptic systems in R^N, or in the exterior of a ball. We consider the case of fully coupled systems and nonlinearities which are either convex or have a convex derivative. The solutions are shown to be foliated Schwarz symmetric if a bound on their Morse index holds. As a consequence of the symmetry results we also obtain some nonexistence theorems.

Blow up of solutions of semilinear heat equations in general domains

Consider the nonlinear heat equation $v_t -Δv= |v|^{p-1} v$ in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \R^n$ with $n>2$ and Dirichlet boundary condition. Given $u_{p}$ a sign-changing stationary solution fulfilling suitable assumptions, we prove that the solution with initial value $θu_{p} $ blows up in finite time if $ |θ-1|>0$ is sufficiently small and if $p$ is sufficiently close to the critical exponent. Since for $θ=1$ the solution is global, this shows that, in general, the set of the initial data for which the solution is global is not star-shaped. This phenomenon had been previously observed in the case when the domain is a ball and the stationary solution is radially symmetric.

Bubble concentration on spheres for supercritical elliptic problems

We consider the supercritical Lane-Emden problem $$(P_\eps)\qquad -Δv= |v|^{p_\eps-1} v \ \hbox{in}\ \mathcal{A} ,\quad u=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partial\mathcal{A} $$ where $\mathcal A$ is an annulus in $\rr^{2m},$ $m\ge2$ and $p_\eps={(m+1)+2\over(m+1)-2}-\eps$, $\eps>0.$ We prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of $(P_\eps)$ concentrating and blowing-up, as $\eps\to0$, on $(m-1)-$dimensional spheres. Using a reduction method (see Ruf-Srikanth (2010) J. Eur. Math. Soc. and Pacella-Srikanth (2012) arXiv:1210.0782)we transform problem $(P_\eps)$ into a nonhomogeneous problem in an annulus $\mathcal D\subset \rr^{m+1}$ which can be solved by a Ljapunov-Schmidt finite dimensional reduction.

Lane Emden problems with large exponents and singular Liouville equations

We consider the Lane-Emden Dirichlet problem -Δu = \abs{u}^{p-1}u, in B, u =0, on \partial B, where $p>1$ and $B$ denotes the unit ball in $\IR^2$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the least energy nodal radial solution $u_p$, as $p\rightarrow +\infty$. Assuming w.l.o.g. that $u_p(0) < 0$, we prove that a suitable rescaling of the negative part $u_p^-$ converges to the unique regular solution of the Liouville equation in $\IR^2$, while a suitable rescaling of the positive part $u_p^+$ converges to a (singular) solution of a singular Liouville equation in $\IR^2$. We also get exact asymptotic values for the $L^\infty$-norms of $u_p^-$ and $u_p^+$, as well as an asymptotic estimate of the energy. Finally, we have that the nodal line $\N_p:={x\in B : \abs{x}= r_p}$ shrinks to a point and we compute the rate of convergence of $r_p$.

On the pure critical exponent problem for the $p$-Laplacian

In this paper we prove existence and multiplicity of positive and sign-changing solutions to the pure critical exponent problem for the $p$-Laplacian operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain having nontrivial topology and discrete symmetry. Pioneering works related to the case $p=2$ are H. Brezis and L. Nirenberg [4], J.-M. Coron [10], and A. Bahri and J.-M. Coron [3]. A global compactness analysis is given for the Palais-Smale sequences in the presence of symmetries.

Sign changing solutions of Lane Emden problems with interior nodal line and semilinear heat equations

We consider the semilinear Lane Emden problem in a smooth bounded simply connected domain in the plane, invariant by the action of a finite symmetry group G. We show that if the orbit of each point in the domain, under the action of the group G, has cardinality greater than or equal to four then, for p sufficiently large, there exists a sign changing solution of the problem with two nodal regions whose nodal line does not touch the boundary of the domain. This result is proved as a consequence of an analogous result for the associated parabolic problem.

A Computer-Assisted Uniqueness Proof for a Semilinear Elliptic Boundary Value Problem

A wide variety of articles, starting with the famous paper (Gidas, Ni and Nirenberg in Commun. Math. Phys. 68, 209-243 (1979)) is devoted to the uniqueness question for the semilinear elliptic boundary value problem -Δu=λu+u^p in Ω, u>0 in Ω, u=0 on the boundary of Ω, where λ ranges between 0 and the first Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalue. So far, this question was settled in the case of Ω being a ball and, for more general domains, in the case λ=0. In (McKenna et al. in J. Differ. Equ. 247, 2140-2162 (2009)), we proposed a computer-assisted approach to this uniqueness question, which indeed provided a proof in the case Ω=(0,1)x(0,1), and p=2. Due to the high numerical complexity, we were not able in (McKenna et al. in J. Differ. Equ. 247, 2140-2162 (2009)) to treat higher values of p. Here, by a significant reduction of the complexity, we will prove uniqueness for the case p=3.

Alternating sign multibump solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations in expanding tubular domains

Let $Γ$ denote a smooth simple curve in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $N\geq2$, possibly with boundary. Let $Ω_{R}$ be the open normal tubular neighborhood of radius 1 of the expanded curve $RΓ:=\{Rx\mid x\in Γ\smallsetminus\partialΓ\}$. Consider the superlinear problem $-Δu+λu=f(u)$ on the domains $Ω_{R}$, as $R\rightarrow \infty$, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove the existence of multibump solutions with bumps lined up along $RΓ$ with alternating signs. The function $f$ is superlinear at 0 and at $\infty$, but it is not assumed to be odd. If the boundary of the curve is nonempty our results give examples of contractible domains in which the problem has multiple sign changing solutions.

Solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in tubes

Given a smooth compact k-dimensional manifold Λembedded in $\mathbb {R}^m$, with m\geq 2 and 1\leq k\leq m-1, and given ε>0, we define B_ε(Λ) to be the geodesic tubular neighborhood of radius εabout Λ. In this paper, we construct positive solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation Δu + u^p = 0 in B_ε(Λ) with u = 0 on \partial B_ε(Λ), when the parameter εis chosen small enough. In this equation, the exponent p satisfies either p > 1 when n:=m-k \leq 2 or p\in (1, \frac{n+2}{n-2}) when n>2. In particular p can be critical or supercritical in dimension m\geq 3. As εtends to zero, the solutions we construct have Morse index tending to infinity. Moreover, using a Pohozaev type argument, we prove that our result is sharp in the sense that there are no positive solutions for p>\frac{n+2}{n-2}, n\geq 3, if εis sufficiently small.

A Reduction Method for Semilinear Elliptic Equations and Solutions Concentrating on Spheres

We show that any general semilinear elliptic problem with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions in an annulus A in R^2m ;m >1, invariant by the action of a certain symmetry group can be reduced to a nonhomogenous similar problem in an annulus D in R^(m+1), invariant by another related symmetry. We apply this result to prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of a singularly perturbed elliptic problem in A which concentrate on one or two (m-1) dimensional spheres. We also prove that the Morse indices of these solutions tend to infinity as the parameter of concentration tends to infinity.

Symmetry results for cooperative elliptic systems via linearization

In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of nonlinear cooperative elliptic systems in a ball or in annulus in $\RN$, $N \geq 2 $. More precisely we prove that solutions having Morse index $j \leq N $ are foliated Schwarz symmetric if the nonlinearity is convex and a full coupling condition is satisfied along the solution.

Lane Emden problems: asymptotic behavior of low energy nodal solutions

We study the nodal solutions of the Lane Emden Dirichlet problem $-Δu = |u|^{p-1}u with DBC on a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ in $\IR^2$ and where $p>1$. We consider solutions $u_p$ satisfying $p \int_Ω\abs{\nabla u_p}^2\to 16πe\quad\hbox{as}p\rightarrow+\infty\qquad (*)$ and we are interested in the shape and the asymptotic behavior as $p\rightarrow+\infty$. First we prove that (*) holds for least energy nodal solutions. Then we obtain some estimates and the asymptotic profile of this kind of solutions. Finally, in some cases, we prove that $pu_p$ can be characterized as the difference of two Green's functions and the nodal line intersects the boundary of $Ω$, for large $p$.
