Gaps for geometric genera

We investigate the possible values for geometric genera of subvarieties in a smooth projective variety. Values which are not attained are called gaps. For curves on a very general surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, the initial gap interval was found by Xu (see [7] in References), and the next one in our previous paper (see [4] in References), where also the finiteness of the set of gaps was established and an asymptotic upper bound of this set was found. In the present paper we extend some of these results to smooth projective varieties of arbitrary dimension using a different approach.

Hilbert schemes of some threefold scrolls over F_e

Hilbert schemes of suitable smooth, projective 3-fold scrolls over the Hirzebruch surface F_e, with e > 1, are studied. An irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme parametrizing such varieties is shown to be generically smooth of the expected dimension and the general point of such a component is described. This article generalizes the study of Hilbert schemes done in arXiv:1110.5464 for e=1.

On families of rank-2 uniform bundles on Hirzebruch surfaces and Hilbert schemes of their scrolls

Several families of rank-two vector bundles on Hirzebruch surfaces are shown to consist of all very ample, uniform bundles. Under suitable numerical assumptions, the projectivization of these bundles, embedded by their tautological line bundles as linear scrolls, are shown to correspond to smooth points of components of their Hilbert scheme, the latter having the expected dimension. If e=0,1 the scrolls fill up the entire component of the Hilbert scheme, while for e=2 the scrolls exhaust a subvariety of codimension 1.

Genera of curves on a very general surface in $P^3$

In this paper we consider the question of determining the geometric genera of irreducible curves lying on a very general surface $S$ of degree $d$ at least 5 in $\mathbb{P}^3$ (the cases $d \leqslant 4$ are well known). We introduce the set $Gaps(d)$ of all non-negative integers which are not realized as geometric genera of irreducible curves on $S$. We prove that $Gaps(d)$ is finite and, in particular, that $Gaps(5)= \{0,1,2\}$. The set $Gaps(d)$ is the union of finitely many disjoint and separated integer intervals. The first of them, according to a theorem of Xu, is $Gaps_0(d):=[0, \frac{d(d-3)}{2} - 3]$. We show that the next one is $Gaps_1(d):= [\frac{d^2-3d+4}{2}, d^2-2d-9]$ for all $d \geqslant 6$.

Hilbert scheme of some threefold scrolls over the Hirzebruch surface F_1

Hilbert schemes of suitable smooth, projective manifolds of low degree which are 3-fold scrolls over the Hirzebruch surface F_1 are studied. An irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme parametrizing such varieties is shown to be generically smooth of the expected dimension and the general point of such a component is described.

P^r-scrolls arising from Brill-Noether theory and K3-surfaces

In this paper we study examples of P^r-scrolls defined over primitively polarized K3 surfaces S of genus g, which arise from Brill-Noether theory of the general curve in the primitive linear system on S and from classical Lazarsfeld's results in. We show that such scrolls form an open dense subset of a component H of their Hilbert scheme; moreover, we study some properties of H (e.g. smoothness, dimensional computation, etc.) just in terms of the moduli space of such K3's and of the moduli space of semistable torsion-free sheaves of a given Mukai-vector on S. One of the motivation of this analysis is to try to introducing the use of projective geometry and degeneration techniques in order to studying possible limits of semistable vector-bundles of any rank on a general K3 as well as Brill-Noether theory of vector-bundles on suitable degenerations of projective curves. We conclude the paper by discussing some applications to the Hilbert schemes of geometrically ruled surfaces whose base curve has general moduli.

The curve of lines on a prime Fano threefold of genus 8

We show that a general prime Fano threefold X of genus 8 can be reconstructed from the pair $(Γ,L)$, where $Γ$ is its Fano curve of lines and $L=O_Γ(1)$ is the theta-characteristic which gives a natural embedding $Γ\subset \matbb{P}^5$.

On degenerations of surfaces

This paper surveys and gives a uniform exposition of results contained in papers published by the team of authors. The subject is degenerations of surfaces, especially to unions of planes. More specifically, we deduce some properties of the smooth surface which is the general fibre of the degeneration from combinatorial features of the central fibre. In particular we show that there are strong constraints on the invariants of a smooth surface which degenerates to configurations of planes. Finally we consider several examples of embedded degenerations of smooth surfaces to unions of planes. Our interest in these problems has been raised by a series of interesting articles by Guido Zappa in 1950's.

Non-special scrolls with general moduli

In this paper we study smooth, non-special scrolls S of degree d, genus g, with general moduli. In particular, we study the scheme of unisecant curves of a given degree on S. Our approach is mostly based on degeneration techniques.

Nodal curves with general moduli on K3 surfaces

We investigate the modular properties of nodal curves on a low genus K3 surface. We prove that a general genus g curve C is the normalization of a d-nodal curve X sitting on a primitively polarized K3 surface S of degree 2p-2, for p any integer between 3 and 11 and g = p - d between 2 and p. The proof is based on a local deformation-theoretic analysis of the map from the stack of pairs (S,X) to the moduli space of curves of genus g that associates to X the isomorphism class [C] of its normalization.

On families of rational curves in the Hilbert square of a surface (with an Appendix by Edoardo Sernesi)

Under natural hypotheses we give an upper bound on the dimension of families of singular curves with hyperelliptic normalizations on a surface S with p_g(S) >0 via the study of the associated families of rational curves in Hilb^2(S). We use this result to prove the existence of nodal curves of geometric genus 3 with hyperelliptic normalizations, on a general K3 surface, thus obtaining specific 2-dimensional families of rational curves in its Hilbert square. We describe two infinite series of examples of general, primitively polarized K3's such that their Hilbert squares contain a IP^2 or a threefold birational to a IP^1-bundle over a K3. We discuss some consequences on the Mori cone of the Hilbert square of a general K3.

Singular curves on a K3 surface and linear series on their normalizations

In this paper, we study the Brill-Noether theory of the normalizations of singular, irreducible curves on a $K3$ surface. We introduce a {\em singular} Brill-Noether number $ρ_{sing}$ and show that if the Picard group of the K3 surface is ${\mathbb Z} [L]$, there are no $g^r_d$'s on the normalizations of irreducible curves in $|L|$, provided that $ρ_{sing} <0$. We give examples showing the sharpness of this result. We then focus on the case of {\em hyperelliptic normalizations}, and classify linear systems $|L|$ containing irreducible nodal curves with hyperelliptic normalizations, for $ρ_{sing}<0$, without any assumption on its Picard group.

Degenerations of scrolls to unions of planes

In this paper we study degenerations of scrolls to union of planes, a problem already considered by G. Zappa in 1940-50. We prove, using techniques different from the ones of Zappa, a degeneration result to union of planes with the mildest possible singularities, for linearly normal scrolls of genus $g$ and of degree $d$ larger than $2g+4$ in $\Pp^{d-2g+1}$. We also study properties of components of the Hilbert scheme parametrizing scrolls. Finally we review Zappa's original approach.

Equivalence of families of singular schemes on threefolds and on ruled fourfolds

The main purpose of this paper is twofold. We first want to analyze in details the meaningful geometric aspect of the method introduced in the previous paper [12], concerning regularity of families of irreducible, nodal "curves" on a smooth, projective threefold $X$. This analysis highlights several fascinating connections with families of other singular geometric "objects" related to $X$ and to other varieties. Then, we generalize this method to study similar problems for families of singular divisors on ruled fourfolds suitably related to $X$.

Families of nodal curves on projective threefolds and their regularity via postulation of nodes

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a new approach to study families of nodal curves on projective threefolds. Precisely, given $X$ a smooth projective threefold, $\E$ a rank-two vector bundle on $X$, $L$ a very ample line bundle on $X$ and $k \geq 0$, $δ>0 $ integers and denoted by $V= {\V}_δ ({\E} \otimes L^{\otimes k})$ the subscheme of ${\Pp}(H^0({\E} \otimes L^{\otimes k}))$ parametrizing global sections of ${\E} \otimes L^{\otimes k}$ whose zero-loci are irreducible and $δ$-nodal curves on $X$, we present a new cohomological description of the tangent space $T_{[s]}({\V}_δ ({\E} \otimes L^{\otimes k}))$ at a point $[s]\in {\V}_δ ({\E} \otimes L^{\otimes k})$. This description enable us to determine effective and uniform upper-bounds for $δ$, which are linear polynomials in $k$, such that the family $V$ is smooth and of the expected dimension ({\em regular}, for short). The almost-sharpness of our bounds is shown by some interesting examples. Furthermore, when $X$ is assumed to be a Fano or a Calaby-Yau threefold, we study in detail the regularity property of a point $[s] \in V$ related to the postulation of the nodes of its zero-locus $C_s =C \subset X$. Roughly speaking, when the nodes of $C$ are assumed to be in general position either on $X$ or on an irreducible divisor of $X$ having at worst log-terminal singularities or to lie on a l.c.i. and subcanonical curve in $X$, we find upper-bounds on $δ$ which are, respectively, cubic, quadratic and linear polynomials in $k$ ensuring the regularity of $V$ at $[s]$. Finally, when $X= \Pt$, we also discuss some interesting geometric properties of the curves given by sections parametrized by $V$.
