Transitivity and topological mixing for C1 diffeomorphisms

We prove that, on connected compact manifolds, both C1-generic conservative diffeomorphisms and C1-generic transitive diffeomorphisms are topologically mixing. This is obtained through a description of the periods of a homoclinic class and by a control of the period of the periodic points given by the closing lemma.

Nonuniform hyperbolicity for C^1-generic diffeomorphisms

We study the ergodic theory of non-conservative C^1-generic diffeomorphisms. First, we show that homoclinic classes of arbitrary diffeomorphisms exhibit ergodic measures whose supports coincide with the homoclinic class. Second, we show that generic (for the weak topology) ergodic measures of C^1-generic diffeomorphisms are nonuniformly hyperbolic: they exhibit no zero Lyapunov exponents. Third, we extend a theorem by Sigmund on hyperbolic basic sets: every isolated transitive set L of any C^1-generic diffeomorphism f exhibits many ergodic hyperbolic measures whose supports coincide with the whole set L. In addition, confirming a claim made by R. Mané in 1982, we show that hyperbolic measures whose Oseledets splittings are dominated satisfy Pesin's Stable Manifold Theorem, even if the diffeomorphism is only C^1.

Robust transitivity and topological mixing for $C^1$-flows

We prove that non-trivial homoclinic classes of $C^r$-generic flows are topologically mixing. This implies that given $Λ$ a non-trivial $C^1$-robustly transitive set of a vector field $X$, there is a $C^1$-perturbation $Y$ of $X$ such that the continuation $Λ_Y$ of $Λ$ is a topologically mixing set for $Y$. In particular, robustly transitive flows become topologically mixing after $C^1$-perturbations. These results generalize a theorem by Bowen on the basic sets of generic Axiom A flows. We also show that the set of flows whose non-trivial homoclinic classes are topologically mixing is \emph{not} open and dense, in general.
