Slowly rotating charged BTZ black hole solutions in Palatini Chern-Simons gravity

We consider a metric-affine formulation of Chern-Simons modified gravity in 2 + 1 dimensions. The theory is built requiring projective invariance, and the structure of the equations is analyzed using a decomposition in terms of scalar, vectorial, and purely tensorial objects. This approach allows us to implement a perturbative approach to study the corrections that emerge around a given background solution, for which we consider a BTZ charged, non-rotating metric. We show that conditions on model parameters are necessary to keep perturbations under control, yielding a rotating solution with a constant angular momentum and magnetic field at the horizon, and a smooth decay further away. We comment on the possibility of going beyond the leading order in perturbations and on its dynamical implications.

Dynamical system analysis of the cosmological phases in Palatini $k$-essence gravity

We formulate a generalized $k$-essence model in the presence of a Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravitational sector. In the corresponding biscalar-tensor theory, we discuss the distinguished dynamical properties of the two scalar fields, elucidating how the Palatini scalaron can be still algebraically solved in terms of matter, the $k$-essence field and its kinetic term. We derive the conditions ensuring the absence of Ostrogradsky modes and the well-posedness of the initial data problem, also providing an intriguing analogy with a specific class of DHOST theories. Then, we investigate the cosmology of a flat Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker spacetime according a dynamical system approach, with the aim of determining the set of fixed points in the phase space, representing specific periods of the Universe evolution and characterized by different effective barotropic index $w_{\text{eff}}$. The analysis reveals the presence of a range of possible configurations, with the existence of (quasi) de-Sitter epochs connected by heteroclinic orbits, scaling solutions and quintessence phases.

Gravitational waves in Palatini gravity for a non-minimal geometry-matter coupling

We discuss the propagation of gravitational waves over a non-Riemannian spacetime, when a non-minimal coupling between the geometry and matter is considered in the form of contractions of the energy momentum tensor with the Ricci and co-Ricci curvature tensors. We focus our analysis on perturbations on a Minkowski background, elucidating how derivatives of the energy momentum tensor can sustain non-trivial torsion and non-metricity excitations, eventually resulting in additional source terms for the metric field. These can be reorganized in the form of D'Alembert operator acting on the energy momentum tensor and the equivalence principle can be reinforced at the linear level by a suitable choice of the parameters of the model. We show how tensor polarizations can exhibit a subluminal phase velocity in matter, evading the constraints found in General Relativity, and how this allows for the kinematic damping in specific configurations of the medium and of the geometry-matter coupling. These in turn define regions in the wavenumber space where propagation is forbidden, leading to the appearance of typical cut-off scale in the frequency spectrum.

Inflation in non-local hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

Within the framework of hybrid metric-Palatini gravity, we incorporate non-localities introduced via the inverse of the d'Alembert operators acting on the scalar curvature. We analyse the dynamical structure of the theory and, adopting a scalar-tensor perspective, assess the stability conditions to ensure the absence of ghost instabilities. Focusing on a special class of well-defined hybrid actions -- where local and non-local contributions are carried by distinct types of curvature -- we investigate the feasibility of inflation within the resulting Einstein-frame multi-field scenario. We examine how the non-minimal kinetic couplings between the fields, reflecting the non-local structure of the original frame, influence the number of e-folds and the field trajectories. To clarify the physical interpretation of our results, we draw analogies with benchmark single-field inflation scenarios that include spectator fields.

Metric $f(R)$ gravity with dynamical dark energy as a scenario for the Hubble tension

We introduce a theoretical framework to interpret the Hubble tension, based on the combination of a metric $f(R)$ gravity with a dynamical dark energy contribution. The modified gravity provides the non-minimally coupled scalar field responsible for the proper scaling of the Hubble constant, in order to accommodate for the local SNIa pantheon+ data and Planck measurements. The dynamical dark energy source, which exhibits a phantom divide line separating the low red-shift quintessence regime ($-1<w<-1/3$) from the phantom contribution ($w<-1$) in the early Universe, guarantees the absence of tachyonic instabilities at low red-shift. The resulting $H_0(z)$ profile rapidly approaches the Planck value, with a plateau behaviour for $z\gtrsim 5$. In this scenario, the Hubble tension emerges as a low red-shift effect, which can be in principle tested by comparing SNIa predictions with far sources, like QUASARS and Gamma Ray Bursts.

Echoes from bounded universes

We construct a general class of modified Ellis wormholes, where one asymptotic Minkowski region is replaced by a bounded 2-sphere core, characterized by asymptotic finite areal radius. We pursue an in-depth analysis of the resulting geometry, outlining that geodesic completeness is guaranteed also when the radial function asymptotically shrinks to zero. Then, we study the evolution of scalar perturbations, bringing out how these geometric configurations can in principle affect the time-domain profiles of quasinormal modes, pointing out the distinctive features with respect to other black holes or wormholes geometries.

$f(R)$ gravity in the Jordan Frame as a Paradigm for the Hubble Tension

We analyse the $f(R)$ gravity in the so-called Jordan frame, as implemented to the isotropic Universe dynamics. The goal of the present study is to show that, according to recent data analyses of the supernovae Ia Pantheon sample, it is possible to account for an effective redshift dependence of the Hubble constant. This is achieved via the dynamics of a non-minimally coupled scalar field, as it emerges in the $f(R)$ gravity. We face the question both from an analytical and purely numerical point of view, following the same technical paradigm. We arrive to establish that the expected decay of the Hubble constant with the redshift $z$ is ensured by a form of the scalar field potential, which remains essentially constant for $z\lesssim0.3$, independently if this request is made a priori, as in the analytical approach, or obtained a posteriori, when the numerical procedure is addressed. Thus, we demonstrate that an $f(R)$ dark energy model is able to account for an apparent variation of the Hubble constant due to the rescaling of the Einstein constant by the $f(R)$ scalar mode.

Landau damping for gravitational waves in parity-violating theories

We discuss how tensor polarizations of gravitational waves can suffer Landau damping in the presence of velocity birefringence, when parity symmetry is explicitly broken. In particular, we analyze the role of the Nieh-Yan and Chern-Simons terms in modified theories of gravity, showing how the gravitational perturbation in collisionless media can be characterized by a subluminal phase velocity, circumventing the well-known results of General Relativity and allowing for the appearance of the kinematic damping. We investigate in detail the connection between the thermodynamic properties of the medium, such as temperature and mass of the particles interacting with the gravitational wave, and the parameters ruling the parity violating terms of the models. In this respect, we outline how the dispersion relations can give rise in each model to different regions of the wavenumber space, where the phase velocity is subluminal, superluminal or does not exist. Quantitative estimates on the considered models indicate that the phenomenon of Landau damping is not detectable given the sensitivity of present-day instruments.

Quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild black holes in projective invariant Chern-Simons modified gravity

We generalize the Chern-Simons modified gravity to the metric-affine case and impose projective invariance by supplementing the Pontryagin density with homothetic curvature terms which do not spoil topologicity. The latter is then broken by promoting the coupling of the Chern-Simons term to a (pseudo)-scalar field. The solutions for torsion and nonmetricity are derived perturbatively, showing that they can be iteratively obtained from the background fields. This allows us to describe the dynamics for the metric and the scalar field perturbations in a self-consistent way, and we apply the formalism to the study of quasinormal modes in a Schwarzschild black hole background. Unlike in the metric formulation of this theory, we show that the scalar field is endowed with dynamics even in the absence of its kinetic term in the action. Finally, using numerical methods we compute the quasinormal frequencies and characterize the late-time power law tails for scalar and metric perturbations, comparing the results with the outcomes of the purely metric approach.

Quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild black holes in metric affine Chern-Simons theory

We reformulate the Chern-Simons modified gravity in the metric-affine formalism, by enlarging the Pontryagin density with homothetic curvature terms which restore projective invariance without spoiling topologicity. The latter is then violated by promoting the coupling of the Chern-Simons term to a (pseudo)-scalar field. We derive the perturbative solutions for torsion and nonmetricity from the background fields, and we describe the dynamics for the resulting linearized metric and the scalar fields in a Schwarzschild black hole background. Then, by adopting numerical techniques we compute the quasinormal mode spectrum and the late-time tails for scalar and metric perturbations.

The role of longitudinal polarizations in Horndeski and macroscopic gravity: Introducing gravitational plasmas

We discuss some general and relevant features of longitudinal gravitational modes in Horndeski gravity and their interaction with matter media. Adopting a gauge-invariant formulation we clarify how massive scalar and vector fields can induce additional transverse and longitudinal excitations, resulting in breathing, vector and longitudinal polarizations. We review, then, the interaction of standard gravitational waves with a molecular medium, outlining the emergence of effective massive gravitons, induced by the net quadrupole moment due to the molecule deformation. Finally, we investigate the interaction of the massive mode in Horndeski gravity with a noncollisional medium, showing that Landau damping phenomenon can occur in the gravitational sector as well. That allows us to introduce the concept of "gravitational plasma'', where inertial forces associated to the background field play the role of cold ions in electromagnetic plasma.

Big-Bounce in projectively invariant Nieh-Yan models: the Bianchi I case

We show that the Nieh-Yan topological invariant breaks projective symmetry and loses its topological character in presence of non vanishing nonmetricity. The notion of the Nieh-Yan topological invariant is then extended to the generic metric-affine case, defining a generalized Nieh-Yan term, which allows to recover topologicity and projective invariance, independently. As a concrete example a class of modified theories of gravity is considered and its dynamical properties are investigated in a cosmological setting. In particular, bouncing cosmological solutions in Bianchi I models are derived. Finite time singularities affecting these solutions are analysed, showing that the geodesic completeness and the regular behavior of scalar perturbations in these space-times are not spoiled.

Big-bounce and future time singularity resolution in Bianchi I: the projective invariant Nieh-Yan case

We extend the notion of the Nieh-Yan invariant to generic metric-affine geometries, where both torsion and nonmetricity are taken into account. Notably, we show that the properties of projective invariance and topologicity can be independently accommodated by a suitable choice of the parameters featuring this new Nieh-Yan term. We then consider a special class of modified theories of gravity able to promote the Immirzi parameter to a dynamical scalar field coupled to the Nieh-Yan form, and we discuss in more detail the dynamics of the effective scalar tensor theory stemming from such a revised theoretical framework. We focus, in particular, on cosmological Bianchi I models and we derive classical solutions where the initial singularity is safely removed in favor of a big-bounce, which is ultimately driven by the non-minimal coupling with the Immirzi field. These solutions, moreover, turn out to be characterized by finite time singularities, but we show that such critical points do not spoil the geodesic completeness and wave regularity of these space-times.

Super-entropic black hole with Immirzi hair

In the context of f(R) generalizations to the Holst action, endowed with a dynamical Immirzi field, we derive an analytic solution describing asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black holes with hyperbolic horizon. These exhibit a scalar hair of the second kind, which ultimately depends on the Immirzi field radial behaviour. In particular, we show how the Immirzi field modifies the usual entropy law associated to the black hole. We also verify that the Immirzi field boils down to a constant value in the asymptotic region, thus restoring the standard Loop Quantum Gravity picture. We finally prove the violation of the reverse isoperimetric inequality, resulting in the super-entropic nature of the black hole, and we discuss in detail the thermodynamic stability of the solution.

Gravitational Landau Damping for massive scalar modes

We establish the possibility of Landau damping for gravitational scalar waves which propagate in a non-collisional gas of particles. In particular, under the hypothesis of homogeneity and isotropy, we describe the medium at the equilibrium with a Jüttner-Maxwell distribution, and we analytically determine the damping rate from the Vlasov equation. We find that damping occurs only if the phase velocity of the wave is subluminal throughout the propagation within the medium. Finally, we investigate relativistic media in cosmological settings by adopting numerical techniques.

Generalized Ashtekar variables for Palatini f(R) models

We consider special classes of Palatini f(R) theories, featured by additional Loop Quantum Gravity inspired terms, with the aim of identifying a set of modified Ashtekar canonical variables, which still preserve the SU(2) gauge structure of the standard theory. In particular, we allow for affine connection to be endowed with torsion, which turns out to depend on the additional scalar degree affecting Palatini f(R) gravity, and in this respect we successfully construct a novel Gauss constraint. We analyze the role of the additional scalar field, outlining as it acquires a dynamical character by virtue of a non vanishing Immirzi parameter, and we describe some possible effects on the area operator stemming from such a revised theoretical framework. Finally, we compare our results with earlier studies in literature, discussing differences between metric and Palatini approaches. It is worth noting how the Hamiltonian turns out to be different in the two cases. The results can be reconciled when the analysis is performed in the Einstein frame.

Scalar modes in extended hybrid metric-Palatini gravity: weak field phenomenology

We investigate the nature of additional scalar degrees of freedom contained in extended hybrid metric-Palatini gravity, outlining the emergence of two coupled dynamical scalar modes. In particular, we discuss the weak field limit of the theory, both in the static case and from a gravitational waves perspective. In the first case, performing an analysis at the lowest order of the post parameterized Newtonian (PPN) structure of the model, we stress the settling of Yukawa corrections to the Newtonian potential. In this respect, we show that one scalar field can have long range interactions and used in the principle for mimicking dark matter effects. Concerning the gravitational waves propagation, instead, we demonstrate that is possible to have well-defined physical degrees of freedom, provided by suitable constraints on model parameters. Moreover, the study of the geodesic deviation points out the presence of breathing and longitudinal polarizations due to these novel scalar waves, which on peculiar assumptions can give rise to beating phenomena during their propagation.

Gauge invariant formulation of gravitational waves in metric $f(R)$ gravity

We analyze the gravitational waves propagation in metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity. In particular, adopting a gauge invariant formalism we clearly determine the exact propagating degrees of freedom. Then, investigating their effects on test masses via geodesic deviation equation, we show that the additional dynamical degree contained in such extended formulations is actually responsible for two distinguished polarizations, corresponding to a breathing and a longitudinal mode, respectively.
