Global existence for a Fritz John equation in expanding FLRW spacetimes

We study the family of semilinear wave equations $\square_{\mathbf{g}_p}\phi=(\partial_t\phi)^2$, on fixed expanding FLRW spacetimes, having $\mathbb{R}^3$ spatial slices and undergoing a power law expansion, with scale factor $a(t)=t^p$, $0< p \le 1$. This is a natural generalization to a non-stationary background of a famous Fritz John ''blow-up'' equation in $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$ (corresponding to $p=0$, i.e. the case in which $\mathbf{g}_0$ is the Minkowski metric). While, in Minkowski spacetime ($p=0$), non-trivial solutions to this equation are known to diverge in finite time, here we prove that, on the referred FLRW backgrounds ($0 1$) and relied on the integrability of the inverse of the scale factor to establish future global well-posedness. In the current work, where such an integrability condition is lacking, we rely on a vector field method that captures and combines dispersive estimates with the spacetime expansion to control the solution and suppress the nonlinear blow-up mechanism. To achieve this, we commute the Laplace-Beltrami operator with a boosts-free subset of the Poincar\'e algebra and employ Klainerman-Sideris types of inequalities. Our strategy is general and is developed to handle the non-stationary nature of FLRW spacetimes. While we focus solely on this Fritz John type of equation, which serves as a prototype to study blow-up of non-linear waves, our approach provides a rigorous proof of the regularizing effects of spacetime expansion and can be exploited for a wider range of applications and nonlinearities.

Mass inflation from rough initial data for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with $\Lambda$

Recent rigorous results on black hole interiors clearly suggest that the strong cosmic censorship conjecture fails in its most fundamental, i.e. weak, formulation: violations are expected for a class of spherically symmetric charged black holes in the presence of a positive cosmological constant near extremality. These results require sufficiently regular solutions. Conversely, when non-smooth, finite-energy initial data are prescribed for linear waves propagating on a fixed black hole background belonging to the aforementioned family, it was shown that the local energy of these linear waves blows up at the Cauchy horizon, hence hinting that non-smooth initial data may suppress the possible violations of the $H^1$ formulation of strong cosmic censorship. In line with this intuition, we prove that rough initial data can also trigger an instability at the Cauchy horizon in the non-linear setting, via mass inflation. In particular, we analyse a characteristic initial value problem for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-real scalar field system describing the interior of a black hole. Our results show that, when prescribing 1) initial data asymptotically approaching those of a sub-extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter solution, and 2) initial data belonging to $W^{1, 2}\setminus W^{1, q}$, for every $q > 2$, along the initial ingoing compact segment; then the Hawking mass diverges at the Cauchy horizon of the black hole solution we construct, for every parameter choice of the reference black hole. In this larger family of configurations, we prove that the smooth data suggesting violations of strong cosmic censorship are non-generic in a ``positive co-dimension'' sense, conditionally to the validity of the expected Price law bounds. Moreover, we illustrate the transition between smooth and rough initial data.

Hyperboloidal approach for linear and non-linear wave equations in FLRW spacetimes

In this numerical work, we deal with two distinct problems concerning the propagation of waves in cosmological backgrounds. In both cases, we employ a spacetime foliation given in terms of compactified hyperboloidal slices. These slices intersect future null infinity, so our method is well-suited to study the long-time behaviour of waves. Moreover, our construction is adapted to the presence of the time--dependent scale factor that describes the underlying spacetime expansion. First, we investigate decay rates for solutions to the linear wave equation in a large class of expanding FLRW spacetimes, whose non--compact spatial sections have either zero or negative curvature. By means of a hyperboloidal foliation, we provide new numerical evidence for the sharpness of decay--in--time estimates for linear waves propagating in such spacetimes. Then, in the spatially-flat case, we present numerical results in support of small data global existence of solutions to semi-linear wave equations in FLRW spacetimes having a decelerated expansion, provided that a generalized null condition holds. In absence of this null condition and in the specific case of $ \square_g ϕ= (\partial_t ϕ)^2 $ (Fritz John's choice), the results we obtain suggest that, when the spacetime expansion is sufficiently slow, solutions diverge in finite time for every choice of initial data.

Strong cosmic censorship for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-charged-Klein-Gordon system with positive $Λ$: stability of the Cauchy horizon and $H^1$ extensions

We investigate the interior of a dynamical black hole as described by the Einstein-Maxwell-charged-Klein-Gordon system of equations with a cosmological constant, under spherical symmetry. In particular, we consider a characteristic initial value problem where, on the outgoing initial hypersurface, interpreted as the event horizon $\mathcal{H}^+$ of a dynamical black hole, we prescribe: a) initial data asymptotically approaching a fixed sub-extremal Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution; b) an exponential Price law upper bound for the charged scalar field. After showing local well-posedness for the corresponding first-order system of partial differential equations, we establish the existence of a Cauchy horizon $\mathcal{CH}^+$ for the evolved spacetime, extending the bootstrap methods used in the case $Λ= 0$ by Van de Moortel. In this context, we show the existence of $C^0$ spacetime extensions beyond $\mathcal{CH}^+$. Moreover, if the scalar field decays at a sufficiently fast rate along $\mathcal{H}^+$, we show that the renormalized Hawking mass remains bounded for a large set of initial data. With respect to the analogous model concerning an uncharged and massless scalar field, we are able to extend the known range of parameters for which mass inflation is prevented, up to the optimal threshold suggested by the linear analyses by Costa-Franzen and Hintz-Vasy. In this no-mass-inflation scenario, which includes near-extremal solutions, we further prove that the spacetime can be extended across the Cauchy horizon with continuous metric, Christoffel symbols in $L^2_{\text{loc}}$ and scalar field in $H^1_{\text{loc}}$. By generalizing the work by Costa-Girão-Natário-Silva to the case of a charged and massive scalar field, our results reveal a potential failure of the Christodoulou-Chruściel version of the strong cosmic censorship under spherical symmetry.

Decay of solutions of the wave equation in cosmological spacetimes -- a numerical analysis

We numerically evolve spherically symmetric solutions to the linear wave equation on some expanding Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes and study the respective asymptotics for large times. We find a quantitative relation between the expansion rate of the underlying background universe and the decay rate of linear waves, also in the context of spatially-hyperbolic spacetimes, for which rigorous proofs of decay rates are not generally known. A prominent role in the decay mechanism is shown to be played by tails, i.e. scattered waves propagating in the interior of the lightcone.

Explicit formulas and decay rates for the solution of the wave equation in cosmological spacetimes

We obtain explicit formulas for the solution of the wave equation in certain Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes. Our method, pioneered by Klainerman and Sarnak, consists in finding differential operators that map solutions of the wave equation in these FLRW spacetimes to solutions of the conformally invariant wave equation in simpler, ultra-static spacetimes, for which spherical mean formulas are available. In addition to recovering the formulas for the dust-filled flat and hyperbolic FLRW spacetimes originally derived by Klainerman and Sarnak, and generalizing them to the spherical case, we obtain new formulas for the radiation-filled FLRW spacetimes and also for the de Sitter, anti-de Sitter and Milne universes. We use these formulas to study the solutions with respect to the Huygens principle and the decay rates, and to formulate conjectures about the general decay rates in flat and hyperbolic FLRW spacetimes. The positive resolution of the conjecture in the flat case is seen to follow from known results in the literature.
