Chiral Altermagnon in MnTe

Altermagnetism has surfaced as a novel magnetic phase, bridging the properties of ferro- and anti-ferromagnetism. The momentum-dependent spin-splitting observed in these materials reflects their unique symmetry characteristics, which also establish the conditions for chiral magnons to emerge. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence for a chiral magnon in the altermagnetic candidate MnTe revealed by circular-dichroism resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (CD-RIXS). This mode which we term chiral altermagnon exhibits a distinct momentum dependence of its spin polarization consistent with the proposed altermagnetic $g-$wave symmetry of MnTe. Our polarization-resolved results corroborate the existence of a new class of magnetic excitations, demonstrating how altermagnetic order shapes spin dynamics and paves the way for advances in spintronic and quantum technologies.

Detection of a two-phonon mode in a cuprate superconductor via polarimetric RIXS

Recent improvements in the energy resolution of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments (RIXS) at the Cu-L$_3$ edge have enabled the study of lattice, spin, and charge excitations. Here, we report on the detection of a low intensity signal at 140meV, twice the energy of the bond-stretching (BS) phonon mode, in the cuprate superconductor $\textrm{Bi}_2\textrm{Sr}_2\textrm{Ca}\textrm{Cu}_2\textrm{O}_{8+x}$ (Bi-2212). Ultra-high resolution polarimetric RIXS measurements allow us to resolve the outgoing polarization of the signal and identify this feature as a two-phonon excitation. Further, we study the connection between the two-phonon mode and the BS one-phonon mode by constructing a joint density of states toy model that reproduces the key features of the data.

Paramagnon dispersion and damping in doped Na$_{x}$Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$

Using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering, we measure the paramagnon dispersion and damping of undoped, antiferromagnetic Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ as well as doped, superconducting Na$_{x}$Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Our estimation of the spin-exchange parameter and width of the paramagnon peak at the zone boundary $X=(0.5,0)$ confirms that no simple relation can be drawn between these parameters and the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Consistently with other cuprate compounds, we show that upon doping there is a slight softening at $(0.25,0)$, but not at the zone boundary $X$. In combination with these measurements we perform calculations of the dynamical spin structure factor of the one-band Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment in the undoped case, both in terms of energy position and width. While the increase in width is also captured upon doping, the dynamical spin structure factor shows a sizable softening at $X$, which provides insightful information on the length-scale of the spin fluctuations in doped cuprates.

Bulk charge density wave and electron-phonon coupling in superconducting copper oxychlorides

Bulk charge density waves are now reported in nearly all high-temperature superconducting cuprates, with the noticeable exception of one particular family: the copper oxychlorides. Here, we used resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

State of Co and Mn in half-metallic ferromagnet Co$_2$MnSi explored by magnetic circular dichroism in hard X-ray photoelectron emission and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopies

The half-metallic Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi is a very attractive material for spintronic devices because it exhibits very high tunnelling magnetoresistance ratios. This work reports on a spectroscopic investigation of thin Co$_2$MnSi films as they are used as electrodes in magnetic tunnel junctions. The investigated films exhibit a remanent in-plane magnetisation with a magnetic moment of about 5~$μ_B$ when saturated, as expected. The low coercive field of only 4~mT indicates soft magnetic behaviour. Magnetic dichroism in emission and absorption was measured at the Co and Mn $2p$ core levels. The photoelectron spectra were excited by circularly polarised hard X-rays with an energy of of 6~keV and taken from the remanently magnetised film. The soft X-ray absorption spectra were taken in an induction field of 4~T. Both methods yielded large dichroism effects. An analysis reveals the localised character of the electrons and magnetic moments attributed to the Mn atoms, whereas the electrons related to the Co atoms contribute an itinerant part to the total magnetic moment.
