Machine-learning test of the single-ion model for $dd$ excitations in cuprates

We investigate $dd$ excitations in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering spectra of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$ and La$_2$CuO$_4$ using the local single-ion model. The data are analyzed by conventional global fitting and by a convolutional neural network trained within the same theoretical framework. For YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$, the excited state energies obtained with the two methods coincide, leading to the $xy$, $3z^2-r^2$, $xz/yz$ sequence for increasing energy. This result validates the use of machine learning tools for the analysis of RIXS spectra dominated by $dd$ excitations. By contrast, for La$_2$CuO$_4$, the two methods do not converge to a single solution, revealing the limitations of the single-ion model in describing $dd$ excitations in cuprates and pointing to the role of additional contributions beyond a purely local picture in shaping high-energy excitations.

The influence of phonon symmetry and electronic structure on the electron-phonon coupling momentum dependence in cuprates

The experimental determination of the magnitude and momentum dependence of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is an outstanding problem in condensed matter physics. The intensity of phonon peaks in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) spectra can be related to the underlying EPC strength under significant approximations whose validity deserves careful verification. We measured the Cu L$_3$ RIXS phonon intensity as function of incident photon energy and of momentum transfer in several layered cuprates. For CaCuO$_2$, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$, and \ch{YBa_2Cu_3O_{6}}, using a generally accepted theoretical model, we estimate quantitatively the EPC for the bond-stretching mode along the high-symmetry directions ($ζ$,0) and ($ζ$,$ζ$), and as a function of the azimuthal angle $φ$ at fixed $q_\parallel$. We compare our results with theoretical predictions and we find that the $\mathbf{q}_\parallel$-dependence of the phonon RIXS intensity can be largely ascribed to the phonon symmetry. However, a more satisfactory prediction of the experimental results requires an accurate description of the electronic structure close to the Fermi level. Our extensive investigation indicates that Cu L$_3$ RIXS can be reliably used to determine the momentum dependence of EPC for the bond-stretching modes of cuprates. Moreover, the large experimental basis provided in this article can serve as stringent test for advanced theoretical predictions on the EPC.

Mixed spin states for robust ferromagnetism in strained SrCoO$_3$ thin films

Epitaxial strain in transition-metal oxides can induce dramatic changes in electronic and magnetic properties. A recent study on the epitaxially strained SrCoO$_3$ thin films revealed persistent ferromagnetism even across a metal-insulator transition. This challenges the current theoretical predictions, and the nature of the local spin state underlying this robustness remains unresolved. Here, we employ high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Co-$L_3$ edge to probe the spin states of strained SrCoO$_3$ thin films. Compared with CoO$_6$ cluster multiplet calculations, we identify a ground state composed of a mixed high- and low-spin configuration, distinct from the previously proposed intermediate-spin state. Our results demonstrate that the robustness of ferromagnetism arises from the interplay between this mixed spin state and the presence of ligand holes associated with negative charge transfer. These findings provide direct experimental evidence for a nontrivial magnetic ground state in SrCoO$_3$ and offer new pathways for designing robust ferromagnetic systems in correlated oxides.

Spin excitations in Nd1-xSrxNiO2 and YBa2Cu3O7-delta: the influence of Hubbard U

We use Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) to compare the doping dependence of magnetic excitations of an Infinite-Layer nickelate to those of a prototypical superconducting cuprate. The polarization analysis of RIXS spectra establishes the dominant spin-flip nature of the mid-infrared peak in both cases. Hole doping leads to opposite behavior of the magnetic energy in the two materials. By fitting the data with an original Hubbard-based model for dynamic susceptibility, we find that t is comparable in the two materials while U is about twice larger in the nickelate. This finding accounts for the smaller magnetic bandwidth of nickelates and for its decrease upon doping.

Three-dimensional tomographic imaging of the magnetization vector field using Fourier transform holography

In recent years, interest in expanding from 2D to 3D systems has grown in the magnetism community, from exploring new geometries to broadening the knowledge on the magnetic textures present in thick samples, and with this arise the need for new characterization techniques, in particular tomographic imaging. Here, we present a new tomographic technique based on Fourier transform holography, a lensless imaging technique that uses a known reference in the sample to retrieve the object of interest from its diffraction pattern in one single step of calculation, overcoming the phase problem inherent to reciprocal-space-based techniques. Moreover, by exploiting the phase contrast instead of the absorption contrast, thicker samples can be investigated. We obtain a 3D full-vectorial image of a 800 nm-thick extended Fe/Gd multilayer in a 5$μ$m-diameter circular field of view with a resolution of approximately 80 nm. The 3D image reveals worm-like domains with magnetization pointing mostly out of plane near the surface of the sample but that falls in-plane near the substrate. Since the FTH setup is fairly simple, it allows modifying the sample environment. Therefore, this technique could enable in particular a 3D view of the magnetic configuration's response to an external magnetic field.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of doping and temperature dependence of low-energy excitations in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$

We present a temperature and doping dependent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiment at the V L$_{2,3}$ and O K edges in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$ for $x=0$ and $x=0.1$. This material is a canonical example of a compound that exhibits a filling control metal-insulator transition and undergoes orbital ordering and antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperature. Temperature dependent measurements at the V L$_{3}$ edge reveal an intra-t$_{2g}$ excitation that blueshifts by 40 meV from room temperature to 30 K at a rate that differs between the para- and antiferromagnetic phases. The lineshape can be partially explained by a purely local model using crystal field theory calculations. At $x=0.1$ the doping is shown to affect the local electronic structure primarily on the O sites, which is in disagreement with a simple Mott-Hubbard picture. We reveal the presence of phonon overtone features at the O K edge, which evidences that the low energy part of the spectrum is dominated by phonon response.
