Discovery of a new M32-like "Compact Elliptical" galaxy in the halo of the Abell 496 cD galaxy

Aims: ``Compact ellipticals'' are so rare that a search for M32 analogs is needed to ensure the very existence of this class. Methods: We report here the discovery of A496cE, a M32 twin in the cluster Abell 496, located in the halo of the central cD. Results: Based on CFHT and HST imaging we show that the light profile of A496cE requires a two component fit: a Sersic bulge and an exponential disc. The spectrum of A496cE obtained with the ESO-VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrograph can be fit by a stellar synthesis spectrum dominated by old stars, with high values of [Mg/Fe] and velocity dispersion. Conclusions: The capture of A496cE by the cD galaxy and tidal stripping of most of its disc are briefly discussed.

Giant Ringlike Radio Structures Around Galaxy Cluster Abell 3376

In the current paradigm of cold dark matter cosmology, large-scale structures are assembling through hierarchical clustering of matter. In this process, an important role is played by megaparsec (Mpc)-scale cosmic shock waves, arising in gravity-driven supersonic flows of intergalactic matter onto dark matter-dominated collapsing structures such as pancakes, filaments, and clusters of galaxies. Here, we report Very Large Array telescope observations of giant (~2 Mpc by 1.6 Mpc), ring-shaped nonthermal radio-emitting structures, found at the outskirts of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 3376. These structures may trace the elusive shock waves of cosmological large-scale matter flows, which are energetic enough to power them. These radio sources may also be the acceleration sites where magnetic shocks are possibly boosting cosmic-ray particles with energies of up to 10^18 to 10^19 electron volts.

High and ultra-high energy cosmic ray acceleration in structure-formation shocks in Abell 3376 galaxy cluster

We describe multiwavelength optical, X-ray and radio evidences of energetic mergers in southern galaxy cluster Abell 3376 (A3376, redshift z=0.046, X-ray luminosity $ \rm L_{X}(0.1-2.4 keV)= 2.48 \times 10^{44} erg s^{-1}$). Here we report the rare discovery of gigantic, Mpc-scale non-thermal radio structures (`radio-arcs'), shaped like a pair of bow-shock fronts on the merger axis. We argue for the shock acceleration origin of the radio emission and discuss the possibilty of acceleration of very high energy cosmic ray particles in this and similar clusters. At redshift z=0.04, cluster A3376 is near enough that some of these primary or secondary cosmic ray components could actually be detected by new cosmic ray telescopes, particularly the energetic inverse Compton hard X-ray/gamma-ray photons upto extreme energies $E_γ \sim 100 {γ^{e}_{7}}^{2}$ GeV (where ${γ^{e}_{7}}$ is the electron Lorentz factor in units of $10^7$). Identification of radio or hard X-ray/gamma-ray emission from structure formation shocks holds a great promise for advancing current knowledge on shock formation in the IGM. It should provide the first direct evidence for such shocks, revealing the underlying large-scale cosmological flows. When combined with hard X-ray or gamma-ray detection, the radio signal will provide a direct measure of the unknown magnetic fields in the IGM, thus providing a better understanding of processes leading to IGM magnetization and also acceleration and propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays.

The merging cluster Abell 85 caught between meals by XMM-Newton

Our XMM-Newton observations of Abell 85 confirm the extended 4 Mpc filament first detected with ROSAT, which has an X-ray temperature of about 2 keV and is probably made of groups falling on to the cluster. A comparison of the temperature map with numerical simulations show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. Finally, a deprojected temperature profile has been calculated and used, together with the suface brightness, to estimate the entropy and pressure profiles. Abell 85 only presents a mild flattening of the entropy profile in the center, showing no evidence of an ``entropy floor''.

The galaxy luminosity function in the cluster of galaxies Abell 496

We have derived the galaxy luminosity function (GLF) in the cluster of galaxies Abell 496 from a wide field image in the I band. A single Schechter function reproduces quite well the GLF in the 17 <= I_{AB} <= 22 (-19.5 <= M_I <= -14.5) magnitude interval, and the power law index of this function is found to be somewhat steeper in the outer regions than in the inner regions. This result agrees with the idea that faint galaxies are more abundant in the outer regions of clusters, while in the denser inner regions they have partly been accreted by larger galaxies or have been dimmed or even disrupted by tidal interactions.

XMM-Newton and Chandra view of the Cluster Abell 85 and its X-Ray Filament

From ROSAT data, the bright X-ray cluster Abell 85 was found to show a roughly symmetrical shape, on to which are superimposed several features, among which: (1) a blob or group of galaxies falling on to the main cluster, with the gas in the impact region probably hotter and the galaxies in that zone showing enhanced star formation; (2) a filament, either diffuse or made of small groups of galaxies, extending at least 4 Mpc from the cluster (Durret et al. 1998). Preliminary results obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 85 and its filament will be presented.

The extreme ultraviolet excess emission in five clusters of galaxies revisited

Evidence for excess extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission over a tail of X-ray gas bremsstrahlung emission has been building up recently, but in some cases remains controversial, mostly due to the moderate quality of the EUV data. In order to improve the signal to noise ratio in the EUV, we have performed the wavelet analysis and image reconstructions for five clusters of galaxies observed both at EUV and X-ray energies with the EUVE and ROSAT satellites respectively. The profiles of the EUV and X-ray reconstructed images all differ at a very large confidence level and an EUV excess over a thermal bremsstrahlung tail is detected in all five clusters (Abell 1795, Abell 2199, Abell 4059, Coma and Virgo) up to large radii. These results, coupled with recent XMM-Newton observations, suggest that the EUV excess is probably non thermal in origin.

Clusters of Galaxies as Self-Gravitating Systems

Self-gravitating systems such as elliptical galaxies appear to have a constant specific entropy and obey a scaling law relating their potential energy to their mass. These properties can be interpreted as due to the physical processes involved in the formation of these structures. Dark matter haloes obtained through numerical simulations have also been found to obey a scaling law relating their potential energy to their mass with the same slope as ellipticals. Since the X-ray gas in clusters is weakly dissipative, we have checked the hypothesis that it might verify similar properties. We have analyzed ROSAT-PSPC images of 24 clusters, and also found that: 1) the Sérsic law parameters (intensity, shape and scale) describing the X-ray gas emission are correlated two by two; 2) the hot gas in all these clusters roughly has the same specific entropy; 3) a scaling law linking the cluster potential energy to the mass of the X-ray gas is observed, with the same slope as for elliptical galaxies and dark matter haloes.

Circumnuclear structure and kinematics in the active galaxy NGC 6951

A study is presented of the central structure and kinematics of the galaxy NGC 6951, by means of broad band B'IJK images and high resolution high dispersion longslit spectroscopy, together with archival HST WFPC2 V and NICMOS2 J and H images. We find that there is evidence of two modes of star formation, in bursts and continuously. The equivalent width of the CaII triplet absorption lines show that, in the metal rich central region, the continuum is dominated by a population of red supergiants. The gaseous and stellar kinematics along three slit position angles, suggest the existence of a hierarchy of disks within disks, whose dynamics are decoupled at the two ILRs, that we find at 180 pc and at 1100 pc. This is supported by the structure seen in the high resolution HST images. The nucleus is spatially resolved within a radius of 1.5 arcsec, just inside the innermost ILR. Outside the iILR, the stellar CaT velocity profile is resolved into two components, associated with the bar and the disk. Several results indicate that this is a dynamically old system. It is thus possible that a nuclear bar has existed in NGC 6951 that drove the gas towards the nucleus, as in the bars within bars scenario, but that this bar has already dissolved by the gas accumulated within the circumnuclear region. We discuss the possibility that the kinematical component inside the iILR could be due to a nuclear outflow produced by the combined effects of SN and SN remnants, or to a nuclear disk, as in the disk within disk scenario that we propose for the fueling of the AGN in NGC 6951.

A photometric catalogue of galaxies in the cluster Abell 496

We present two catalogues of galaxies in the direction of the rich cluster Abell 496. The first one includes 3,879 galaxies located in a region of roughly 1.3 degrees from the cluster centre. It has been obtained from a list of more than 35,000 galaxy candidates detected by scanning part of a Schmidt photographic plate taken in the b_J band. Positions are very accurate in this catalogue but magnitudes are not. This led us to perform CCD imaging observations in the V and R bands to calibrate these photographic magnitudes. A second catalogue gives a list of galaxies with CCD magnitudes in the V (239 galaxies) and R (610 galaxies) bands for a much smaller region in the centre of the cluster. These two catalogues will be combined with a redshift catalogue of 466 galaxies (Durret et al. 1999) to investigate the cluster properties at optical wavelengths (Durret et al. in preparation), as a complement to previous X-ray studies by a member of our group (Pislar 1998).

A catalogue of velocities in the direction of the cluster of galaxies Abell 496

We present a catalogue of velocities for 466 galaxies in the direction of the cluster Abell 496, in a region covering about 160' x 160' (9.2 x 9.2 Mpc for an average redshift for Abell 496 of 0.0331, assuming H$_0$=50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$). This catalogue includes previously published redshifts by Proust et al. (1987), Quintana and Ramirez (1990) and Malumuth et al. (1992), redshifts from the CfA redshift survey, together with our new measurements. A total of 274 galaxies have velocities in the 7800-11800 km/s interval, and will be considered as members of the cluster. Abell 496 therefore becomes one of the few clusters with a high number of measured redshifts; its physical properties are investigated in a companion paper.

A multi-wavelength analysis of the cluster of galaxies ABCG 194

(Abridged) We present a morphological and structural analysis of the Richness zero cluster ABCG 194, known as a ``linear cluster'', based on a catalogue of 97 galaxies with B magnitudes and redshifts, a ROSAT PSPC image and radio data. The overall large scale structure is rather smooth and comparable at optical and X-ray wavelengths. The cluster is elongated along PA $\approx 50$; however it appears as ``linear'' when taking into account only galaxies in the very central part (the axial ratio varies from 0.2 in the central region to 0.8 for a larger region). We have obtained the galaxy and X-ray emitting gas density profiles and estimated the X-ray gas and dynamical masses. At smaller scales, the analysis of both positions and velocities reveals the existence of several groups; a main structure with a nearly gaussian velocity distribution is exhibited. The velocity dispersion is small ($σ_{los} $ = 360 \kms). A wavelet analysis of the X-ray image reveals no large scale substructures. Small scale X-ray sources are detected, mainly corresponding to individual galaxies. ABCG 194 is overall a poor and cold relaxed cluster. We compare how its characteristics fit into various correlations found in the literature, but generally for richer/hotter clusters.

Celestial Origin of the Extended EUV Emission from the Abell 2199 and Abell 1795 Clusters of Galaxies

Several authors (S. Bowyer, T. Berghoeffer, and E. Korpela, hereinafter abbreviated as BBK) recently announced that the luminous extended EUV radiation from the clusters Abell 1795 and Abell 2199, which represents the large scale presence of a new and very soft emission component, is an illusion in the EUVE Deep Survey (DS) detector image. Specifically BBK found that the radial profile of photon background surface brightness, for concentric annuli centered at a detector position which has been used to observe cluster targets, shows an intrinsic `hump' of excess at small radii which resembles the detection of extended cluster EUV. We accordingly profiled background data, but found no evidence of significant central excess. However, to avoid argument concerning possible variability in the background pattern, we performed a clincher test which demonstrates that a cluster's EUV profile is invariant with respect to photon background. The test involves re-observation of A2199 and A1795 when the photon background was respectively three and two times higher than before, and using a different part of the detector. The radial profiles of both clusters, which have entirely different shapes, were accurately reproduced. In this way the BBK scenario is quantitatively excluded, with the inevitable conclusion that the detected signals are genuinely celestial.
