On asymptotic B-convexity and infratype

In this note, we introduce and study the notions of asymptotic B-convexity and asymptotic infratype $p$, and we prove asymptotic analogs of a series of results due to Giesy \cite{Giesy66} and Pisier \cite{Pisier74}. In particular, we give a simplified proof of an asymptotic version of Pisier's $\ell_1$-theorem that was originally proven by Causey, Draga, and Kochanek in \cite{CDK19}. We also briefly discuss the notion of asymptotic stable type.

Coarse equivalence versus bijective coarse equivalence of expander graphs

We provide a characterization of when a coarse equivalence between coarse disjoint unions of expander graphs is close to a bijective coarse equivalence. We use this to show that if the uniform Roe algebras of coarse disjoint unions of expanders graphs are isomorphic, then the metric spaces must be bijectively coarsely equivalent.

A new coarsely rigid class of Banach spaces

We prove that the class of reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely rigid, meaning that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space $Y$, then $X$ is also reflexive and asymptotic-$c_0$. In order to achieve this result we provide a purely metric characterization of this class of Banach spaces. This metric characterization takes the form of a concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the Hamming graphs, which is rigid under coarse embeddings. Using an example of a quasi-reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space, we show that this concentration inequality is not equivalent to the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Hamming graphs.

The coarse geometry of Tsirelson's space and applications

The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. In particular, we disprove the conjecture that the separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. The rigidity result follows from a new concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the infinite Hamming graphs and taking values in $T^*$, and from the embeddability of the infinite Hamming graphs into Banach spaces that admit spreading models not isomorphic to $c_0$. Also, a purely metric characterization of finite dimensionality is obtained.

Tight embeddability of proper and stable metric spaces

We introduce the notions of almost Lipschitz embeddability and nearly isometric embeddability. We prove that for $p\in [1,\infty]$, every proper subset of $L_p$ is almost Lipschitzly embeddable into a Banach space $X$ if and only if $X$ contains uniformly the $\ell_p^n$'s. We also sharpen a result of N. Kalton by showing that every stable metric space is nearly isometrically embeddable in the class of reflexive Banach spaces.

Embeddability of snowflaked metrics with applications to the nonlinear geometry of the spaces $L_p$ and $\ell_{p}$ for $0<p<\infty$

We study the classical spaces $L_{p}$ and $\ell_{p}$ for the whole range $0<p<\infty$ from a metric viewpoint and give a complete Lipschitz embeddability roadmap between any two of those spaces when equipped with both their ad-hoc distances and their snowflakings. Through connections with weaker forms of embeddings that lead to basic (yet fundamental) open problems, we also set the challenging goal of understanding the dissimilarities between the well-known subspace structure and the different nonlinear geometries that coexist inside $L_{p}$ and $\ell_{p}$.

Metrical characterization of super-reflexivity and linear type of Banach spaces

We prove that a Banach space X is not super-reflexive if and only if the hyperbolic infinite tree embeds metrically into X. We improve one implication of J.Bourgain's result who gave a metrical characterization of super-reflexivity in Banach spaces in terms of uniforms embeddings of the finite trees. A characterization of the linear type for Banach spaces is given using the embedding of the infinite tree equipped with a suitable metric.
