Spectrum of SL(2,R)-characters: the once-punctured torus case

Consider a topological surface $Σ$. We introduce the spectrum of a representation from the fundamental group of $Σ$ to SL(2,R), which is a subset of projective measured lamination on the surface, which captures the directions along which the representation fails to be Fuchsian, and which characterizes the action of the mapping class group on this representation. In the case of the once-punctured torus, we show that the spectrum of a generic representation is a Cantor set, and that it completely describes the dynamics of the familly of locally constant cocycles above interval exchange transformations associated to the representation.

Bridging Arbitrary and Tree Metrics via Differentiable Gromov Hyperbolicity

Trees and the associated shortest-path tree metrics provide a powerful framework for representing hierarchical and combinatorial structures in data. Given an arbitrary metric space, its deviation from a tree metric can be quantified by Gromov's $δ$-hyperbolicity. Nonetheless, designing algorithms that bridge an arbitrary metric to its closest tree metric is still a vivid subject of interest, as most common approaches are either heuristical and lack guarantees, or perform moderately well. In this work, we introduce a novel differentiable optimization framework, coined DeltaZero, that solves this problem. Our method leverages a smooth surrogate for Gromov's $δ$-hyperbolicity which enables a gradient-based optimization, with a tractable complexity. The corresponding optimization procedure is derived from a problem with better worst case guarantees than existing bounds, and is justified statistically. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our method consistently achieves state-of-the-art distortion.

Dynamics on Markov surfaces: classification of stationary measures

Consider the four punctured sphere ${\mathbb{S}}_4^2$. Each choice of four traces, one for each puncture, determines a relative character variety for the representations of the fundamental group of ${\mathbb{S}}_4^2$ in ${\sf{SL}}_2(\mathbb{C})$. We classify the stationary probability measures for the action of the mapping class group ${\sf{Mod}}({\mathbb{S}}_4^2)$ on these character varieties.

Gap between Lyapunov exponents for Hitchin representations

We study Lyapunov exponents for flat bundles over hyperbolic curves defined via parallel transport over the geodesic flow. We consider them as invariants on the space of Hitchin representations and show that there is a gap between any two consecutive Lyapunov exponents. Moreover we characterize the uniformizing representation of the Riemann surface as the one with the extremal gaps. The strategy of the proof is to relate Lyapunov exponents in the case of Anosov representations to other invariants, where the gap result is already available or where we can directly show it. In particular, firstly we relate Lyapunov exponents to a foliated Lyapunov exponent associated to a foliation Hölder isomorphic to the unstable foliation on the unitary tangent bundle of a Riemann surface. Secondly, we relate them to the renormalized intersection product in the setting of the thermodynamic formalism developed by Bridgeman, Canary, Labourie and Sambarino.

Dominating CAT(-1) surface group representations by Fuchsian ones

We show that for every representation $ ρ: π_{1} (S_{g}) \to \text{Isom}(X) $ of the fundamental group of a genus $ g \ge 2 $ surface to the isometry group of a complete $ \text{CAT}(-1) $ metric space $ X $ there exists a Fuchsian representation $ j $ and a $ (j, ρ) $-equivariant map from $ \mathbb{H}^{2} $ to $ X $ which is $ c $ -Lipschitz for some $ c < 1 $, or $ ρ$ restricts to a Fuchsian representation. This generalizes results of Gueritaud-Kassel-Wolff, Deroin-Tholozan and Daskalopoulos-Mese-Sanders-Vdovina

Lyapunov exponents and stability properties of higher rank representations

Generalizing results of Deroin-Dujardin, we introduce the notion of proximal stability for a holomorphic family $ (ρ_λ) $ of representations $ Γ\to \text{SL}(d, \mathbb{C}) $, where $ Γ$ is a finitely generated group, and show that it is equivalent to the pluriharmonicity of Lyapunov exponents of the family (defined using random walks).
