Non-uniqueness of nonlinear Markov processes in the sense of McKean associated with parabolic PDEs

We derive a general scheme to construct infinitely many probabilistic counterparts for solutions to nonlinear PDEs by recasting the latter as different nonlinear Fokker--Planck equations and by constructing, for each of these equations, a solution to the associated McKean--Vlasov SDE with one-dimensional time marginal densities given by the PDE solution. We utilize this scheme to prove that nonlinear Markov processes in the sense of McKean as introduced by Rehmeier--R\"ockner (J.\,Theor.\,Probab. 38, 60 (2025)) are not uniquely determined by their one-dimensional time marginals. This is in sharp contrast to the case of classical Markov processes, which are uniquely determined by their one-dimensional time marginals. We demonstrate our results by constructing a continuum of nonlinear Markov processes with one-dimensional time marginal densities given by the Barenblatt solutions to the porous medium and $p$-Laplace equations, as well as by the fundamental solution to the heat equation. This includes a novel martingale representation for the $p$-Laplace Barenblatt solutions. We also prove that a nonlinear Markov process is uniquely determined by its two-dimensional time marginals. Moreover, for the porous medium equation, we show that the different McKean--Vlasov SDEs we investigate are consistent with corresponding gradient flow interpretations of the equation in the sense of Otto calculus.

On Young regimes for locally monotone SPDEs

We consider the following SPDE on a Gelfand-triple $(V, H, V^*)$: $$ du(t)=A(t,u(t))dt+dI_t(u), \qquad u(0)=u_0\in H. $$ Given certain local monotonicity, continuity, coercivity and growth conditions of the operator $A:[0, T]\times V\to V^*$ and a sufficiently regular operator $I$ we establish global existence of weak solutions. In analogy to the Young regime for SDEs, no probabilistic structure is required in our analysis, which is based on a careful combination of monotone operator theory and the recently developed Besov rough analysis by Friz and Seeger. Due to the abstract nature of our approach, it applies to various examples of monotone and locally monotone operators $A$, such as the $p$-Laplace operator, the porous medium operator, and an operator that arises in the context of shear-thickening fluids; and operators $I$, including additive Young drivers $I_t(u) = Z_t-Z_0$, abstract Young integrals $I_t(u) = \int_0^t \sigma(u_s)d X_s$, and translated integrals $I_t(u) = \int_0^t b(u_s - w_s)ds$ that arise in the context of regularization by noise. In each of the latter cases, we identify corresponding noise regimes (i.e. Young regimes) that assure our abstract result to be applicable. In the case of additive drivers, we identify the Brownian setting as borderline, i.e. noises which enjoy slightly more temporal regularity are amenable to our completely pathwise analysis.

On convex integration solutions to the surface quasi-geostrophic equation driven by generic additive noise

We study the surface quasi-geostrophic equation driven by a generic additive noise process $W$. By means of convex integration techniques, we establish existence of weak solutions whenever the stochastic convolution $z$ associated with $W$ is well defined and fulfills certain regularity constraints. Quintessentially, we show that the so constructed solutions to the non-linear equation are controlled by $z$ in a linear fashion. This allows us to deduce further properties of the so constructed solutions, without relying on structural probabilistic properties such as Gaussianity, Markovianity or a martingale property of the underlying noise $W$.

A multiparameter Stochastic Sewing lemma and the regularity of local times associated to Gaussian sheets

We establish a multiparameter extension of the stochastic sewing lemma. This allows us to derive novel regularity estimates on the local time of locally non-deterministic Gaussian fields. These estimates are sufficiently strong to derive regularization by noise results for SDEs in the plain. In this context, we make the interesting and rather surprising observation that regularization effects profiting from each parameter of the underlying stochastic field in an additive fashion usually appear to be due to boundary terms of the driving stochastic field.

Can probability theory really help tame problems in mathematical hydrodynamics?

Recent years have seen spectacular progress in the mathematical study of hydrodynamic equations. Novel tools from convex integration in particular prove extremely versatile in establishing non-uniqueness results. Motivated by this 'pathological' behavior of solutions in the deterministic setting, stochastic models of fluid dynamics have enjoyed growing interest from the mathematical community. Inspired by the theory of 'regularization by noise', it is hoped for that stochasticity might help avoid 'pathologies' such as non-uniqueness of weak solutions. Current research however shows that convex integration methods can prevail even in spite of random perturbations.

A pathwise regularization by noise phenomenon for the evolutionary $p$-Laplace equation

We study an evolutionary $p$-Laplace problem whose potential is subject to a translation in time. Provided the trajectory along which the potential is translated admits a sufficiently regular local time, we establish existence of solutions to the problem for singular potentials for which a priori bounds in classical approaches break down, thereby establishing a pathwise regularization by noise phenomena for this non-linear problem.

Non-linear Young equations in the plane and pathwise regularization by noise for the stochastic wave equation

We study pathwise regularization by noise for equations on the plane in the spirit of the framework outlined by Catellier and Gubinelli (Stochastic Process. Appl., 2016). To this end, we extend the notion of non-linear Young equations to a two dimensional domain and prove existence and uniqueness of such equations. This concept is then used in order to prove regularization by noise for stochastic equations on the plane. The statement of regularization by noise is formulated in terms of the regularity of the local time associated to the perturbing stochastic field. For this, we provide two quantified example: a fractional Brownian sheet and the sum of two one-parameter fractional Brownian motions. As a further illustration of our regularization results, we also prove well-posedness of a 1D non-linear wave equation with a noisy boundary given by fractional Brownian motions. A discussion of open problems and further investigations is provided.

Regularization by random translation of potentials for the continuous PAM and related models in arbitrary dimension

We study a regularization by noise phenomenon for the continuous parabolic Anderson model with a potential shifted along paths of fractional Brownian motion. We demonstrate that provided the Hurst parameter is chosen sufficiently small, this shift allows to establish well-posedness and stability to the corresponding problem - without the need of renormalization - in any dimension. We moreover provide a robustified Feynman-Kac type formula for the unique solution to the regularized problem building upon regularity estimates for the local time of fractional Brownian motion as well as non-linear Young integration.

Weak solutions for singular multiplicative SDEs via regularization by noise

We study multiplicative SDEs perturbed by an additive fractional Brownian motion on another probability space. Provided the Hurst parameter is chosen in a specified regime, we establish existence of probabilistically weak solutions to the SDE if the measurable diffusion coefficient merely satisfies an integrability condition. In particular, this allows to consider certain singular diffusion coefficients.

Strong solutions of semilinear SPDEs with unbounded diffusion

We prove a modification to the classical maximal inequality for stochastic convolutions in 2-smooth Banach spaces using the factorization method. This permits to study semilinear stochastic partial differential equations with unbounded diffusion operators driven by cylindrical Brownian motion via the mild solution approach. In the case of finite dimensional driving noise, provided sufficient regularity on the coefficients, we establish existence and uniqueness of strong solutions.

A Law of Large Numbers for interacting diffusions via a mild formulation

Consider a system of $n$ weakly interacting particles driven by independent Brownian motions. In many instances, it is well known that the empirical measure converges to the solution of a partial differential equation, usually called McKean-Vlasov or Fokker-Planck equation, as $n$ tends to infinity. We propose a relatively new approach to show this convergence by directly studying the stochastic partial differential equation that the empirical measure satisfies for each fixed $n$. Under a suitable control on the noise term, which appears due to the finiteness of the system, we are able to prove that the stochastic perturbation goes to zero, showing that the limiting measure is a solution to the classical McKean-Vlasov equation. In contrast with known results, we do not require any independence or finite moment assumption on the initial condition, but the only weak convergence. The evolution of the empirical measure is studied in a suitable class of Hilbert spaces where the noise term is controlled using two distinct but complementary techniques: rough paths theory and maximal inequalities for self-normalized processes.
