Space as a low-temperature regime of graphs

I define a statistical model of graphs in which 2-dimensional spaces arise at low temperature. The configurations are given by graphs with a fixed number of edges and the Hamiltonian is a simple, local function of the graphs. Simulations show that there is a transition between a low-temperature regime in which the graphs form triangulations of 2-dimensional surfaces and a high-temperature regime, where the surfaces disappear. I use data for the specific heat and other observables to discuss whether this is a phase transition. The surface states are analyzed with regard to topology and defects.

Unitary irreducible representations of SL(2,C) in discrete and continuous SU(1,1) bases

We derive the matrix elements of generators of unitary irreducible representations of SL(2,C) with respect to basis states arising from a decomposition into irreducible representations of SU(1,1). This is done with regard to a discrete basis diagonalized by J^3 and a continuous basis diagonalized by K^1, and for both the discrete and continuous series of SU(1,1). For completeness we also treat the more conventional SU(2) decomposition as a fifth case. The derivation proceeds in a functional / differential framework and exploits the fact that state functions and differential operators have a similar structure in all five cases. The states are defined explicitly and related to SU(1,1) and SU(2) matrix elements.

A spin foam model for general Lorentzian 4-geometries

We derive simplicity constraints for the quantization of general Lorentzian 4-geometries. Our method is based on the correspondence between coherent states and classical bivectors and the minimization of associated uncertainties. For spacelike geometries, this scheme agrees with the master constraint method of the model by Engle, Pereira, Rovelli and Livine (EPRL). When it is applied to general Lorentzian geometries, we obtain new constraints that include the EPRL constraints as a special case. They imply a discrete area spectrum for both spacelike and timelike surfaces. We use these constraints to define a spin foam model for general Lorentzian 4-geometries.

Spin foams with timelike surfaces

Spin foams of 4d gravity were recently extended from complexes with purely spacelike surfaces to complexes that also contain timelike surfaces. In this article, we express the associated partition function in terms of vertex amplitudes and integrals over coherent states. The coherent states are characterized by unit 3--vectors which represent normals to surfaces and lie either in the 2--sphere or the 2d hyperboloids. In the case of timelike surfaces, a new type of coherent state is used and the associated completeness relation is derived. It is also shown that the quantum simplicity constraints can be deduced by three different methods: by weak imposition of the constraints, by restriction of coherent state bases and by the master constraint.

Quantum geometry from phase space reduction

In this work we give an explicit isomorphism between the usual spin network basis and the direct quantization of the reduced phase space of tetrahedra. The main outcome is a formula that describes the space of SU(2) invariant states by an integral over coherent states satisfying the closure constraint exactly, or equivalently, as an integral over the space of classical tetrahedra. This provides an explicit realization of theorems by Guillemin--Sternberg and Hall that describe the commutation of quantization and reduction. In the final part of the paper, we use our result to express the FK spin foam model as an integral over classical tetrahedra and the asymptotics of the vertex amplitude is determined.

On the semiclassical limit of 4d spin foam models

We study the semiclassical properties of the Riemannian spin foam models with Immirzi parameter that are constructed via coherent states. We show that in the semiclassical limit the quantum spin foam amplitudes of an arbitrary triangulation are exponentially suppressed, if the face spins do not correspond to a discrete geometry. When they do arise from a geometry, the amplitudes reduce to the exponential of i times the Regge action. Remarkably, the dependence on the Immirzi parameter disappears in this limit.

Path integral representation of spin foam models of 4d gravity

We give a unified description of all recent spin foam models introduced by Engle, Livine, Pereira and Rovelli (ELPR) and by Freidel and Krasnov (FK). We show that the FK models are, for all values of the Immirzi parameter, equivalent to path integrals of a discrete theory and we provide an explicit formula for the associated actions. We discuss the relation between the FK and ELPR models and also study the corresponding boundary states. For general Immirzi parameter, these are given by Alexandrov's and Livine's SO(4) projected states. For 0 <= gamma < 1, the states can be restricted to SU(2) spin networks.

Dual representation of Polyakov loop in 3d SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory

We consider the expectation value of a Polyakov loop in 3d SU(2) lattice Yang--Mills theory and transform it to the dual representation in terms of sums over spins. The spin dependence of the amplitudes is computed explicitly by a graphical method. We also determine the asymptotic (large spin) limit of the amplitude factors.

An exact string representation of 3d SU(2) lattice Yang--Mills theory

We show that 3d SU(2) lattice Yang--Mills theory can be cast in the form of an exact string representation. The derivation starts from the exact dual (or spin foam) representation of the lattice gauge theory. We prove that every dual configuration (or spin foam) can be equivalently described as a self--avoiding worldsheet of strings on a framing of the lattice. Using this correspondence, we translate the partition function into a sum over closed worldsheets that are weighted with explicit amplitudes. The expectation value of two Polyakov loops with spin j becomes a sum over worldsheets that are bounded by 2j strings along a framing of the loops.

Analytic derivation of dual gluons and monopoles from SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory. I. BF Yang-Mills representation

In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The papers take three different representations as their starting points: the representation as a BF Yang-Mills theory, the spin foam representation and the plaquette representation. The derivations are based on stationary phase approximations. In this first article, we cast 3- and 4-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the form of a lattice BF Yang-Mills theory. In several steps, the expectation value of a Wilson loop is transformed into a path integral over a dual gluon field and monopole-like degrees of freedom. The action contains the tree-level Coulomb interaction and a nonlinear coupling between dual gluons, monopoles and current.

Analytic derivation of dual gluons and monopoles from SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory. II. Spin foam representation

In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Our approach is based on stationary phase approximations. In this second article, we start from the spin foam representation of 3-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. By extending an earlier work of Diakonov and Petrov, we approximate the expectation value of a Wilson loop by a path integral over a dual gluon field and monopole-like degrees of freedom. The action contains the tree-level Coulomb interaction and a nonlinear coupling between dual gluons, monopoles and current.

Analytic derivation of dual gluons and monopoles from SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory. III. Plaquette representation

In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Our approach is based on stationary phase approximations. In this third article, we start from the plaquette representation of 3-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. By extending a work of Borisenko, Voloshin and Faber, we transform the expectation value of a Wilson loop into a path integral over a dual gluon field and monopole variables. The action contains the tree-level Coulomb interaction and a nonlinear coupling between dual gluons, monopoles and current. We show that this model exhibits confinement if a condition on the monopole self-energy is satisfied.

Geometric spin foams, Yang-Mills theory and background-independent models

We review the dual transformation from pure lattice gauge theory to spin foam models with an emphasis on a geometric viewpoint. This allows us to give a simple dual formulation of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, where spin foam surfaces are weighted with the exponentiated area. In the case of gravity, we introduce a symmetry condition which demands that the amplitude of an individual spin foam depends only on its geometric properties and not on the lattice on which it is defined. For models that have this property, we define a new sum over abstract spin foams that is independent of any choice of lattice or triangulation. We show that a version of the Barrett-Crane model satisfies our symmetry requirement.

Free vacuum for loop quantum gravity

We linearize extended ADM-gravity around the flat torus, and use the associated Fock vacuum to construct a state that could play the role of a free vacuum in loop quantum gravity. The state we obtain is an element of the gauge-invariant kinematic Hilbert space and restricted to a cutoff graph, as a natural consequence of the momentum cutoff of the original Fock state. It has the form of a Gaussian superposition of spin networks. We show that the peak of the Gaussian lies at weave-like states and derive a relation between the coloring of the weaves and the cutoff scale. Our analysis indicates that the peak weaves become independent of the cutoff length when the latter is much smaller than the Planck length. By the same method, we also construct multiple-graviton states. We discuss the possible use of these states for deriving a perturbation series in loop quantum gravity.

Topologizations of Chiral Representations

We analyze and compare two families of topologies that have been proposed for representation spaces of chiral algebras by Huang and Gaberdiel & Goddard respectively. We show, in particular, that for suitable pairs the topology of Gaberdiel & Goddard is coarser. We also give a new proof that the chiral two-point blocks are continuous in the topology of Huang.

Generalized Schroedinger equation in Euclidean field theory

We investigate the idea of a "general boundary" formulation of quantum field theory in the context of the Euclidean free scalar field. We propose a precise definition for an evolution kernel that propagates the field through arbitrary spacetime regions. We show that this kernel satisfies an evolution equation which governs its dependence on deformations of the boundary surface and generalizes the ordinary (Euclidean) Schroedinger equation. We also derive the classical counterpart of this equation, which is a Hamilton-Jacobi equation for general boundary surfaces.

Minkowski vacuum in background independent quantum gravity

We consider a local formalism in quantum field theory, in which no reference is made to infinitely extended spacial surfaces, infinite past or infinite future. This can be obtained in terms of a functional W[f,S] of the field f on a closed 3d surface S that bounds a finite region R of Minkowski spacetime. The dependence of W on S is governed by a local covariant generalization of the Schroedinger equation. Particles' scattering amplitudes that describe experiments conducted in the finite region R --the lab during a finite time-- can be expressed in terms of W. The dependence of W on the geometry of S expresses the dependence of the transition amplitudes on the relative location of the particle detectors. In a gravitational theory, background independence implies that W is independent from S. However, the detectors' relative location is still coded in the argument of W, because the geometry of the boundary surface is determined by the boundary value f of the gravitational field. This observation clarifies the physical meaning of the functional W defined by non perturbative formulations of quantum gravity, such as the spinfoam formalism. In particular, it suggests a way to derive particles' scattering amplitudes from a spinfoam model. In particular, we discuss the notion of vacuum in a generally covariant context. We distinguish the nonperturbative vacuum |0_S>, which codes the dynamics, from the Minkowski vacuum |0_M>, which is the state with no particles and is recovered by taking appropriate large values of the boundary metric. We derive a relation between the two vacuum states. We propose an explicit expression for computing the Minkowski vacuum from a spinfoam model.
