$Z_2$ Non-Restoration and Composite Higgs: Singlet-Assisted Baryogenesis w/o Topological Defects

Simple scalar-singlet extensions of the Standard Model with a (spontaneously broken) $Z_2$ symmetry allow for a strong first order electroweak phase transition, as sought in order to realize electroweak baryogenesis. However they generically also lead to the emergence of phenomenologically problematic domain walls. Here we present a framework with a real scalar singlet that features a different thermal history that avoids this problem by never restoring the $Z_2$ symmetry in the early universe. This is accomplished by considering $D>4$ operators that emerge on general grounds, understanding the model as the low energy tail of a more complete theory, like for example in composite Higgs scenarios. Sticking to the latter framework, we present a concrete $SO(6)/SO(5)$ composite realization of the idea. To this end, we additionally provide a complete classification of the structure of the Higgs potential (and the Yukawa couplings) in $SO(6)/SO(5)$ models with fermions in the ${\bf 1, 6, 15}$ or ${\bf 20^\prime}$ of $SO(6)$.

Holographic Composite Higgs Model Building: Soft Breaking, Maximal Symmetry, and the Higgs Mass

We study the emergence and phenomenological consequences of recently proposed new structures, namely soft breaking of the Higgs shift symmetry and `maximal symmetry' of the composite sector, in holographic realizations of composite Higgs models. For the former, we show that soft breaking can also successfully be implemented in a full 5D warped model, where symmetry-restoring universal boundary conditions for the fermion fields allow to break the problematic connection between a realistically light Higgs and anomalously light top partners. For the latter, we demonstrate that the minimal incarnation of maximal symmetry in the holographic dual leads to a sharp prediction of $m_h\approx 197$ GeV for $f=800$ GeV. We find that a viable implementation is possible with sizable negative gauge brane kinetic terms, allowing for $m_h=125$ GeV. Overall, both approaches offer promising directions to improve the naturalness also of holographic realizations of composite Higgs models.

Truncation, validity, uncertainties

The truncation of the standard-model effective field theory, its validity and the associated uncertainties have been discussed in meetings of the LHC EFT WG. Proposals were made by participants to address these issues. No consensus was reached and no formal recommendation is therefore put forward at this time. None of the proposals has been approved or validated and further work is needed to establish a prescription. This note aims at summarizing the proposals and points of debate.

Minimal SU(6) Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

We present a minimal viable Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification scenario in warped space based on a $SU(6)$ bulk symmetry - unifying the gauge symmetries of the SM and their breaking sector. We show how the issue of light exotic new states is eliminated by appropriately breaking the gauge symmetry on the UV and IR boundaries by either brane scalars or gauge boundary conditions. The SM fermion spectrum is naturally reproduced including Dirac neutrinos and we compute the Higgs potential at one-loop, finding easily solutions with a realistic $m_h \sim 125$ GeV. The problem of proton decay is addressed by showing that baryon number is a hidden symmetry of the model. Among the phenomenological consequences, we highlight the presence of a scalar leptoquark and a scalar singlet. The usual $X,Y$ gauge bosons from $SU(5)$ GUTs are found at collider accessible masses.

SU(6) Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification: Minimal Viable Models and Flavor

Gauge-Higgs grand unification theories are models of gauge-Higgs unification that extend the electroweak group into a simple group that includes the color symmetry. The minimal option is a gauge-Higgs grand unification based on the SU(6) gauge group, mirroring SU(5) grand unification in 4D while providing a solution to the hierarchy problem. We explore different minimal and realistic novel incarnations of SU(6) gauge-Higgs grand unification. We submit the setup to the various flavor hierarchies observed in nature and, utilizing the power of the fifth dimension, identify an embedding that provides a compelling model of quarks and leptons that naturally explains the mass hierarchies and the CKM/PMNS structure. We perform a detailed study of quark - and lepton - flavor constraints (which are intimately related due to the GUT nature) together with an analysis of the Higgs potential which arises at the loop level. Electroweak precision constraints on the model are discussed and the rich scalar sector is analyzed. Future flavor constraints from upcoming experiments will provide a stringent test for this class of models, while a scalar singlet and leptoquark provide unique targets for current and future collider experiments to probe this solution to various open questions in nature.

Lepton Flavor in Composite Higgs Models

In this talk, I will present the status of lepton flavor physics in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness in the light of recent data in the lepton sector. I will consider anarchic flavor setups, scenarios with flavor symmetries, and minimal incarnations of the see-saw mechanism that naturally predict non-negligible lepton compositeness. The focus will be on lepton flavor violating processes, dipole moments, and on probes of lepton flavor universality, all providing stringent tests of partial compositeness. The expected size of effects in the different approaches to lepton flavor and the corresponding constraints will be discussed, including "UV complete", effective, and holographic descriptions.

Dark Matter and Nature of Electroweak Phase Transition with an Inert Doublet

We provide a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the prospects to realize Dark Matter (DM) in the Inert Doublet Model, while simultaneously enhancing the Electroweak Phase Transition (EWPhT) such as to allow for electroweak baryogenesis. Instead of focusing on certain aspects or mass hierarchies, we perform extensive, yet fine-grained, parameter space scans, where we analyze the nature of the EWPhT in both the light and the heavy DM regions, confronting it with the amount of DM potentially residing in the lightest inert-doublet state. Thereby, we point out a viable region where a non-trivial two-step EWPhT can appear, without being in conflict with direct-detection bounds, which could leave interesting imprints in gravitational wave signatures. We propose new benchmarks with this feature as well as update benchmarks with a strong first-order transition in the light of new XENON1T limits. Moreover, taking into account these latest bounds as well as relevant collider constraints, we envisage a new region for light DM with a small mass splitting, lifting the usual assumption of exact degeneracy of the new non-DM scalars, such as to avoid collider bounds while providing a fair DM abundance over a rather large DM mass range. This follows from a detailed survey of the impact of co-annihilations on the abundance, dissecting the various channels.

Unification of Gauge Symmetries... including their breaking

In this talk, we present a minimal viable scenario that unifies the gauge symmetries of the Standard Model (SM) and their breaking sector. Our Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification setup employs 5D warped space with a $SU(6)$ bulk gauge field that includes both a $SU(5)$ grand unified theory (GUT) and a Higgs sector as a scalar component of the 5D vector field, solving the hierarchy problem. By appropriately breaking the gauge symmetry on the boundaries of the extra dimension the issue of light exotic new states, appearing generically in such models, is eliminated and the SM fermion spectrum is naturally reproduced. The Higgs potential is computed at one-loop, finding straightforward solutions with a realistic $m_h = 125$ GeV. The problem of proton decay is addressed by showing that baryon number is a hidden symmetry of the model. The presence of a scalar leptoquark and a scalar singlet is highlighted, which might play a role in solving further problems of the SM, allowing for example for electroweak baryogenesis. Finally, the $X$ and $Y$ gauge bosons from $SU(5)$ GUTs are found at collider accessible masses, opening a window to the unification structure at low energies.

A Natural Composite Higgs via Universal Boundary Conditions

We present a novel realization of a composite Higgs, which can naturally produce top partners above the current LHC bounds without increasing the tuning above 10%. The essential ingredients are softened breaking of the Higgs shift symmetry as well as maximal symmetry, which turn out to perfectly complement each other. The 5D realization of this model is particularly simple: universal UV and IR boundary conditions for the bulk fermions containing the SM fields will cure the problems of existing holographic composite Higgs models and provide a complete viable model for a naturally light Higgs without much tuning.

EFT Interpretation of XENON1T Electron Recoil Excess: Neutrinos and Dark Matter

We scrutinize the XENON1T electron recoil excess in the scalar-singlet-extended dark matter effective field theory. We confront it with various astrophysical and laboratory constraints both in a general setup and in the more specific, recently proposed, variant with leptophilic $Z_2$-odd mediators. The latter also provide mass to the light leptons via suppressed $Z_2$ breaking, a structure that is well fitting with the nature of the observed excess and the discrete symmetry leads to non-standard dark-matter interactions. We find that the excess can be explained by neutrino--electron interactions, linked with the neutrino and electron masses, while dark-matter--electron scattering does not lead to statistically significant improvement. We analyze the parameter space preferred by the anomaly and find severe constraints that can only be avoided in certain corners of parameter space. Potentially problematic bounds on electron couplings from Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis can be circumvented via a late phase transition in the new scalar sector.

Discovering the $h\to Z γ$ Decay in $t \bar t$ Associated Production

We explore the prospects to discover the $h \to Z γ$ decay in $t\bar t$-associated production, featuring a signal-to-background ratio of ${\cal O}(1)$. Performing a detailed analysis of the semi-leptonic $t \bar t $-decay channel, we demonstrate that the production mode could lead to a $\sim5\,σ$ discovery at the high-luminosity LHC, while the effective $h Z γ$ coupling could be extracted with a $\sim15\,\%$ accuracy. Extending the analysis to potential future $pp$ colliders with 27 TeV and 100 TeV center-of-mass energies, we also show that the latter would allow precision measurements at the few percent level, rendering possible precise extractions of the spin and CP properties of the Higgs boson.

Model-independent constraints with extended dark matter EFT

We systematically explore the phenomenology of the recently proposed extended dark matter effective field theory (\eDMEFT), which allows for a consistent effective description of DM scenarios across different energy scales. The framework remains applicable at collider energies and is capable of reproducing the correct relic abundance by including a dynamical mediator particle to the dark sector, while maintaining correlations dictated by gauge invariance in a `model-independent' way. Taking into account present and future constraints from direct- and indirect-detection experiments, from collider searches for missing energy and for scalar resonances in vector-boson, di-jet, and Higgs-pair final states, as well as from the relic abundance as measured by Planck, we determine viable regions in the parameter space, both for scalar and pseudoscalar mediator. In particular, we point out regions where cancellations in the direct-detection cross section appear leading to allowed islands for scalar mediators that could be missed in a naive simplified-model approach, but are present in the full $D=5$ effective theory, as well as a general opening of the parameter space due to consistently considering all operators at a given mass dimension. Thus, canonical WIMP-like scenarios can survive even the next generation of direct-detection experiments in different mass regimes, while potentially becoming testable at the high-luminosity LHC.

Di-jet/$e^+e^-$+ MET to Probe $Z_2-$Odd Mediators to the Dark Sector

We explore a scenario where Dark Matter (DM) couples to the Standard Model mainly via a scalar mediator ${\cal S}$ that is odd under a $Z_2$ symmetry, leading to interesting collider signatures. In fact, if linear interactions with the mediator are absent the most important DM production mechanisms at colliders could lead to final states with missing transverse energy (MET) in association with at least two fermions, such as di-jet or di-electron signatures. The framework we consider is model-independent, in a sense that it is only based on symmetry and formulated in the (extended) DM Effective Field Theory (eDMEFT) approach. Moreover, it allows to address the smallness of first-generation fermion masses via suppressed $Z_2$ breaking effects. From a di-jet +MET analysis at the LHC, we find rather loose bounds on the effective ${\cal S}$-${\cal S}$-DM-DM interactions, unless the mediator couples very strongly to SM fermions, while a future $e^+ e^-$ collider, such as CLIC, could deliver tighter constraints on the corresponding model parameters, given the mediator is leptophilic. We finally highlight the parameter space that allows to produce the observed DM density, including constraints from direct-detection experiments.

Axiflavon-Higgs Unification

In this talk, a unified model of scalar particles that addresses the flavour hierarchies, solves the strong CP problem, delivers a dark matter candidate, and radiatively triggers electroweak symmetry breaking is discussed. The recently proposed axiflavon is embedded together with an (elementary) Goldstone Higgs-sector in a single multiplet (and thereby also a model of flavour and strong CP conservation for the latter is provided). Bounds on the axion decay constant follow from requiring a SM-like Higgs potential at low energies and are confronted with constraints from flavour physics and astrophysics. In the minimal implementation, the axion decay constant is restricted to $f_a \approx (10^{11}-10^{12})$ GeV, while adding right-handed neutrinos allows for a heavy-axion model at lower energies, down to $f_a \sim 10$ TeV.

Softened Goldstone-Symmetry Breaking

We propose a new way of breaking the Goldstone symmetry in composite Higgs models, restoring the global symmetry in the mixings between the elementary and composite fermions by completing the former to full representations of this symmetry. The Goldstone symmetry is in turn broken softly by vector-like mass terms in the {\it elementary} sector only. The resulting softened explicit breaking allows for a light Higgs boson, as found at the LHC, and a heavy top quark, without the need of light top partners around the Goldstone scale $f \sim {\rm TeV} \ll m_{\rm comp.}$, which remain elusive at the LHC, while we recover the standard scenario in the limit of infinite vector-like masses.

Composite Higgs theory

I review the idea of realizing the Higgs as a composite pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of a new strongly-interacting sector and collect major constraints on the parameter space of minimal models. Besides limits from electroweak precision tests, LHC searches for resonances and bounds due to Higgs-coupling modifications will be discussed in detail. Finally, the issue of light top partners in these models will be explored, including ways to avoid them which lead to interesting implications for flavor observables.

A Common Source for Scalars: Axiflavon-Higgs Unification

We propose a unified model of scalar particles that addresses the flavour hierarchies, solves the strong CP problem, delivers a dark matter candidate, and provides the trigger for electroweak symmetry breaking. Besides furnishing a unification of the recently proposed axiflavon with a Goldstone-Higgs sector, the scenario can also be seen as adding a model of flavour (and strong CP conservation along with axion dark matter) to elementary Goldstone-Higgs setups. In particular, we derive bounds on the axion decay constant from the need to generate a SM-like Higgs potential at low energies, which we confront with constraints from flavour physics and cosmology. In the minimal implementation, we find that the axion decay constant is restricted to a thin stripe of $f_a \approx (10^{11}-10^{12})$ GeV, while adding right-handed neutrinos allows to realize a heavy-axion model at lower energies, down to $f_a \sim 10$ TeV.

Extended Dark Matter EFT

Conventional approaches to describe dark matter phenomenology at collider and (in)direct detection experiments in the form of dark matter effective field theory or simplified models suffer in general from drawbacks regarding validity at high energies and/or generality, limiting their applicability. In order to avoid these shortcomings, we propose a hybrid framework in the form of an effective theory, including, however, both the dark matter states and a mediator connecting the former to the Standard Model fields. Since the mediation can be realized through rather light new dynamical fields allowing for non-negligible collider signals in missing energy searches, the framework remains valid for the phenomenologically interesting parameter region, while retaining correlations dictated by gauge symmetry. Moreover, a richer new-physics sector can be consistently included via higher-dimensional operators. Interestingly, for fermionic and scalar dark matter with a (pseudo-)scalar mediator, the leading effects originate from dimension-five operators, allowing to capture them with a rather small set of new couplings. We finally examine the correlations between constraints from reproducing the correct relic density, direct-detection experiments, and mono-jet and Higgs+missing energy signatures at the LHC.
