Approximate streamsurfaces for flow visualization

Instantaneous features of three-dimensional velocity fields are most directly visualized via streamsurfaces. It is generally unclear, however, which streamsurfaces one should pick for this purpose, given that infinitely many such surfaces pass through each point of the flow domain. Exceptions to this rule are vector fields with a nondegenerate first integral whose level surfaces globally define a continuous, one-parameter family of streamsurfaces. While generic vector fields have no first integrals, their vortical regions may admit local first integrals over a discrete set of streamtubes, as Hamiltonian systems are known to do over Cantor sets of invariant tori. Here we introduce a method to construct such first integrals approximately from velocity data, and show that their level sets indeed frame vortical features of the velocity field in examples in which those features are known from Lagrangian analysis. Moreover, we test our method in numerical data sets, including a flow inside a V-junction and a turbulent channel flow. For the latter, we propound an algorithm to pin down the most salient barriers to momentum transport up to a given scale providing a way out of the occlusion conundrum that typically accompanies other vortex visualization methods.

Non-local Hydrodynamics as a slow manifold for the one-dimensional kinetic equation

We prove an explicit, non-local hydrodynamic closure for the linear one-dimensional kinetic equation independent on the size of the relaxation time. We compare this dynamical equation to the local approximations obtained from the Chapman--Enskog expansion for small relaxation times. Our results rely on the spectral theory of Jacobi operators with rank-one perturbations.

On the Global Well-Posedness of the Inviscid Generalized Proudman-Johnson equation using flow map arguments

We reformulate the Generalized Proudman--Johnson (GPJ) equation with parameter a in Lagrangian variables, where it takes the form of an inhomogeneous Liouville equation. This allows us to provide an explicitformula for the flow map, up to the solution of an ODE. Depending on the parameter a, we prove new criteria for global existence or formation of a finite-time singularity. In particular, we show that there exist smooth initial data which become singular in finite time for a > 1. Also, we give a physical derivation of the GPJ equation for general parameter values of a.

Global persistence of Lyapunov-subcenter-manifolds as spectral submanifolds under dissipative perturbations

For a nondegenerate analytic system with a conserved quantity, a classic result by Lyapunov guarantees the existence of an analytic manifold of periodic orbits tangent to any two-dimensional, elliptic eigenspace of a fixed point satisfying nonresonance conditions. These two dimensional manifolds are referred as Lyapunov Subcenter Manifolds (LSM). Numerical and experimental observations in the nonlinear vibrations literature suggest that LSM's often persist under autonomous, dissipative perturbations. These perturbed manifolds are useful since they provide information of the asymptotics of the convergence to equilibrium. In this paper, we formulate and prove precise mathematical results on the persistence of LSM under dissipation. We show that, under mild non-degeneracy conditions on the perturbation, for small enough dissipation, there are analytic invariant manifolds of the perturbed system that approximate (in the analytic sense) the LSM in a fixed neighborhood. We also provide examples that show that some non-degeneracy conditions on the perturbations are needed for the results to hold true. We also study the dependence of the manifolds on the dissipation parameter. If $\varepsilon$ is the dissipation parameter, we show that the manifolds are real analytic in $(-\varepsilon_0, \varepsilon_0) \setminus \{0\} $ and $C^\infty $ in $(-\varepsilon_0, \varepsilon_0)$. We construct explicit asymptotic expansions in powers of $\varepsilon$ (which presumably do not converge). Finally, we present applications of our results to several mechanical systems.

Non-Existence of Periodic Orbits for Forced-Damped Potential Systems in Bounded Domains

We prove Lr-estimates on periodic solutions of periodically-forced, linearly-damped mechanical systems with polynomially-bounded potentials. The estimates are applied to obtain a non-existence result of periodic solutions in bounded domains, depending on an upper bound on the gradient of the potential. The results are illustrated on examples.

Barriers to the Transport of Diffusive Scalars in Compressible Flows

Our recent work identifies material surfaces in incompressible flows that extremize the transport of an arbitrary, weakly diffusive scalar field relative to neighboring surfaces. Such barriers and enhancers of transport can be located directly from the deterministic component of the velocity field without diffusive or stochastic simulations. Here we extend these results to compressible flows and to diffusive concentration fields affected by sources or sinks, as well as by spontaneous decay. We construct diffusive transport extremizers with and without constraining them on a specific initial concentration distribution. For two-dimensional flows, we obtain explicit differential equations and a diagnostic scalar field that identify the most observable extremizers with pointwise uniform transport density. We illustrate our results by uncovering diffusion barriers and enhancers in analytic, numerical, and observational velocity fields.

Material Barriers to Diffusive and Stochastic Transport

We seek transport barriers and transport enhancers as material surfaces across which the transport of diffusive tracers is minimal or maximal in a general, unsteady flow. We find that such surfaces are extremizers of a universal, non-dimensional transport functional whose leading-order term in the diffusivity can be computed directly from the flow velocity. The most observable (uniform) transport extremizers are explicitly computable as null-surfaces of an objective transport tensor. Even in the limit of vanishing diffusivity, these surfaces differ from all previously identified coherent structures for purely advective fluid transport. Our results extend directly to stochastic velocity fields and hence enable transport barrier and enhancer detection under uncertainties.

Exact Model Reduction for Damped-Forced Nonlinear Beams: An Infinite-Dimensional Analysis

We use invariant manifold results on Banach spaces to conclude the existence of spectral submanifolds (SSMs) in a class of nonlinear, externally forced beam oscillations. SSMs are the smoothest nonlinear extensions of spectral subspaces of the linearized beam equation. Reduction of the governing PDE to SSMs provides an explicit low-dimensional model which captures the correct asymptotics of the full, infinite-dimensional dynamics. Our approach is general enough to admit extensions to other types of continuum vibrations. The model-reduction procedure we employ also gives guidelines for a mathematically self-consistent modeling of damping in PDEs describing structural vibrations.
