Exotic criticality in the dimerized spin-1 $XXZ$ chain with single-ion anisotropy

We consider the dimerized spin-1 $XXZ$ chain with single-ion anisotropy $D$. In absence of an explicit dimerization there are three phases: a large-$D$, an antiferromagnetically ordered and a Haldane phase. This phase structure persists up to a critical dimerization, above which the Haldane phase disappears. We show that for weak dimerization the phases are separated by Gaussian and Ising quantum phase transitions. One of the Ising transitions terminates in a critical point in the universality class of the dilute Ising model. We comment on the relevance of our results to experiments on quasi-one-dimensional anisotropic spin-1 quantum magnets.

Spin transport through a spin-1/2 XXZ chain contacted to fermionic leads

We employ matrix-product state techniques to numerically study the zero-temperature spin transport in a finite spin-1/2 XXZ chain coupled to fermionic leads with a spin bias voltage. Current-voltage characteristics are calculated for parameters corresponding to the gapless XY phase and the gapped Néel phase. In both cases, the low-bias spin current is strongly suppressed unless the parameters of the model are fine-tuned. For the XY phase, this corresponds to a conducting fixed point where the conductance agrees with the Luttinger-liquid prediction. In the Néel phase, fine-tuning the parameters similarly leads to an unsuppressed spin current with a linear current-voltage characteristic at low bias voltages. However, with increasing the bias voltage, there occurs a sharp crossover to a region where a current-voltage characteristic is no longer linear and the smaller differential conductance is observed. We furthermore show that the parameters maximizing the spin current minimize the Friedel oscillations at the interface, in agreement with the previous analyses of the charge current for inhomogeneous Hubbard and spinless fermion chains.

Finite-temperature dynamic structure factor of the spin-1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy

Improving matrix-product state techniques based on the purification of the density matrix, we are able to accurately calculate the finite-temperature dynamic response of the infinite spin-1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy in the Haldane, large-$D$ and antiferromagnetic phases. Distinct thermally activated scattering processes make a significant contribution to the spectral weight in all cases. In the Haldane phase intraband magnon scattering is prominent, and the onsite anisotropy causes the magnon to split into singlet and doublet branches. In the large-$D$ phase response, the intraband signal is separated from an exciton-antiexciton continuum. In the antiferromagnetic phase, holons are the lowest-lying excitations, with a gap that closes at the transition to the Haldane state. At finite temperatures, scattering between domain-wall excitations becomes especially important and strongly enhances the spectral weight for momentum transfer $π$.

Perturbative approach to weakly driven many-particle systems in the presence of approximate conservation laws

We develop a Liouville perturbation theory for weakly driven and weakly open quantum systems in situations when the unperturbed system has a number of conservations laws. If the perturbation violates the conservation laws, it drives the system to a new steady state which can be approximately but efficiently described by a (generalized) Gibbs ensemble characterized by one Lagrange parameter for each conservation law. The value of those has to be determined from rate equations for conserved quantities. Remarkably, even weak perturbations can lead to large responses of conserved quantities. We present a perturbative expansion of the steady state density matrix; first we give the condition that fixes the zeroth order expression (Lagrange parameters) and then determine the higher order corrections via projections of the Liouvillian. The formalism can be applied to a wide range of problems including two-temperature models for electron-phonon systems, Bose condensates of excitons or photons or weakly perturbed integrable models. We test our formalism by studying interacting fermions coupled to non-thermal reservoirs, approximately described by a Boltzmann equation.

Time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensembles in open quantum systems

Generalized Gibbs ensembles have been used as powerful tools to describe the steady state of integrable many-particle quantum systems after a sudden change of the Hamiltonian. Here we demonstrate numerically, that they can be used for a much broader class of problems. We consider integrable systems in the presence of weak perturbations which both break integrability and drive the system to a state far from equilibrium. Under these conditions, we show that the steady state and the time-evolution on long time-scales can be accurately described by a (truncated) generalized Gibbs ensemble with time-dependent Lagrange parameters, determined from simple rate equations. We compare the numerically exact time evolutions of density matrices for small systems with a theory based on block-diagonal density matrices (diagonal ensemble) and a time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensemble containing only small number of approximately conserved quantities, using the one-dimensional Heisenberg model with perturbations described by Lindblad operators as an example.

Strongly repulsive anyons in one dimension

To explore the static properties of the one-dimensional anyon-Hubbard model for a mean density of one particle per site, we apply perturbation theory with respect to the ratio between kinetic energy and interaction energy in the Mott insulating phase. The strong-coupling results for the ground-state energy, the single-particle excitation energies, and the momentum distribution functions up to 6th order in hopping are benchmarked against the numerically exact (infinite) density-matrix renormalization group technique. Since these analytic expressions are valid for any fractional phase $θ$ of anyons, they will be of great value for a sufficiently reliable analysis of future experiments, avoiding extensive and costly numerical simulations.

Critical behavior of the extended Hubbard model with bond dimerization

Exploiting the matrix-product-state based density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique we study the one-dimensional extended ($U$-$V$) Hubbard model with explicit bond dimerization in the half-filled band sector. In particular we investigate the nature of the quantum phase transition, taking place with growing ratio $V/U$ between the symmetry-protected-topological and charge-density-wave insulating states. The (weak-coupling) critical line of continuous Ising transitions with central charge $c=1/2$ terminates at a tricritical point belonging to the universality class of the dilute Ising model with $c=7/10$. We demonstrate that our DMRG data perfectly match with (tricritical) Ising exponents, e.g., for the order parameter $β=1/8$ (1/24) and correlation length $ν=1$ (5/9). Beyond the tricritical Ising point, in the strong-coupling regime, the quantum phase transition becomes first order.

Pumping approximately integrable systems

Weak perturbations can drive an interacting many-particle system far from its initial equilibrium state if one is able to pump into degrees of freedom approximately protected by conservation laws. This concept has for example been used to realize Bose-Einstein condensates of photons, magnons, and excitons. Integrable quantum systems, like the one-dimensional Heisenberg model, are characterized by an infinite set of conservation laws. Here we develop a theory of weakly driven integrable systems and show that pumping can induce large spin or heat currents even in the presence of integrability breaking perturbations, since it activates local and quasi-local approximate conserved quantities. The resulting steady state is qualitatively captured by a truncated generalized Gibbs ensemble with Lagrange parameters that depend on the structure but not on the overall amplitude of perturbations nor the initial state. We suggest to use spin-chain materials driven by terahertz radiation to realize integrability-based spin and heat pumps.

Anyonic Haldane insulator in one dimension

We demonstrate numerically the existence of a nontrivial topological Haldane phase for the one-dimensional extended ($U$-$V$) Hubbard model with a mean density of one particle per site, not only for bosons but also for anyons, despite a broken reflection parity symmetry. The Haldane insulator, surrounded by superfluid, Mott insulator and density-wave phases in the $V$-$U$ parameter plane, is protected by combined (modified) spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, which is verified within our matrix-product-state based infinite density-matrix renormalization group scheme by analyzing generalized transfer matrices. With regard to an experimental verification of the anyonic Haldane insulator state the calculated asymmetry of the dynamical density structure factor should be of particular importance.

Ising tricriticality in the extended Hubbard model with bond dimerization

We explore the quantum phase transition between Peierls and charge-density-wave insulating states in the one-dimensional, half-filled, extended Hubbard model with explicit bond dimerization. We show that the critical line of the continuous Ising transition terminates at a tricritical point, belonging to the universality class of the tricritical Ising model with central charge $c=7/10$. Above this point, the quantum phase transition becomes first order. Employing a numerical matrix-product-state based (infinite) density-matrix renormalization group method we determine the ground-state phase diagram, the spin and two-particle charge excitations gaps, and the entanglement properties of the model with high precision. Performing a bosonization analysis we can derive a field description of the transition region in terms of a triple sine-Gordon model. This allows us to derive field theory predictions for the power-law (exponential) decay of the density-density (spin-spin) and bond-order-wave correlation functions, which are found to be in excellent agreement with our numerical results.

Criticality at the Haldane-insulator charge-density-wave quantum phase transition

Exploiting the entanglement concept within a matrix-product-state based infinite density-matrix renormalization group approach, we show that the spin-density-wave and bond-order-wave ground states of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model give way to a symmetry-protected topological Haldane state in case an additional alternating ferromagnetic spin interaction is added. In the Haldane insulator the lowest entanglement level features a characteristic twofold degeneracy. Increasing the ratio between nearest-neighbor and local Coulomb interaction $V/U$, the enhancement of the entanglement entropy, the variation of the charge, spin and neutral gaps, and the dynamical spin/density response signal a quantum phase transition to a charge-ordered state. Below a critical point, which belongs to the universality class of the tricritical Ising model with central charge 7/10, the model is critical with $c=1/2$ along the transition line. Above this point, the transition between the Haldane insulator and charge-density-wave phases becomes first order.

Spectral and Entanglement Properties of the Bosonic Haldane Insulator

We discuss the existence of a nontrivial topological phase in one-dimensional interacting systems described by the extended Bose-Hubbard model with a mean filling of one boson per site. Performing large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show that the presence of nearest-neighbor repulsion enriches the ground-state phase diagram of the paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model by stabilizing a novel gapped insulating state, the so-called Haldane insulator, which, embedded into superfluid, Mott insulator, and density wave phases, is protected by the lattice inversion symmetry. The quantum phase transitions between the different insulating phases were determined from the central charge via the von Neumann entropy. The Haldane phase reveals a characteristic fourfold degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. We finally demonstrate that the intensity maximum of the dynamical charge structure factor, accessible by Bragg spectroscopy, features the gapped dispersion known from the spin-1 Heisenberg chain.
